Chapter 3: Deeper Down the Rabbit Hole
The reason why breakfast was going fast was because Lea had company. Three people, one woman and two men, sat at Lea’s kitchen table with plates and cups full of food and drinks. They were all laughing and wolfing down the food. There was an empty chair with equally empty plate and cup. Heero nodded to the people seated at the table before taking the empty seat. The woman smiled back. Her pail, lightly freckled cheeks flushed a little as she did so. The two men nodded back and returned their attention to their plates.
Lea appeared at his side with a pan full of scrambled eggs. “There’s bacon, sausages, pancakes and fresh fruit.” She motioned to the bowls and plates full of food displayed before them. Then she pointed to each of the people before him, “This is Mitch,” again Mitch smiled but added a little wiggle of her fingers for a wave. “Orson,” she pointed to the older of the two gentlemen. He didn’t look up from his plate. “And Jacob.”
The young man smiled, “Hello. Glad you could help Lea. I would if I wasn’t working for Mitch here.” He flashed a teasing smile at the stunning redhead. Mitch stuck her tongue out at him. “Where’re ya from anyways?” Jacob said unfazed.
Heero paused as he was bringing a fork full of eggs and sausage to his mouth. Normally, he would have a cover tailored to his assignments. ‘They don’t need to know everything.’ “Earth,” he admitted.
Orson whistled. Jacob’s smile broadened. Neither of them had stopped eating like Mitch did. “Why the hell did you come out here?” she asked green eyes wide with shock. Her voice had a heavy English accent. “I mean… Earth’s like the best thing this side of the galaxy! That’s why everyone’s fighting over it.”
“Don’t misunderstand her, Mr. Yuy,” Orson said. “Mitch’s a little blunt with her words. She believes that anyone who moves from Mother Earth,” he held up both hands and made quotation marks as best as possible. A fork was in one hand and a knife in the other, “has a few screws loose.”
“Well, they do!” Mitch eyed Heero like he was on display at a zoo.
Heero didn’t even stop eating. He had figured there was no reason to respond. People were allowed their opinions. Mitch pouted, upset that she didn’t get a rise out of him. Orson smiled at the two of them. Mitch had finally met a man that was just as uninterested in her and her opinion as he was. Jacob was oblivious to the silent exchange. He was paying attention to Lea who was cleaning up her mess in the kitchen. She was humming happily. The tune seemed to stick into Heero’s mind. He didn’t mind that as much as the way Jacob was looking at her. Heero could tell Jacob was staring at her ass. Heero suppressed a growl, finished his plate and had moved for seconds when Lea returned to the table.
“You never answered my question, Mitch.” She took Mitch’s empty plate and waited to be recognized.
“Hum?” Mitch blinked, turning her dreamy gaze from Heero to Lea. “What question?”
Lea rolled her eyes. Heero paused to watch her before settling in his chair to start on his seconds. How was it that a simple action from her would make his pulse speed up? “Can Orson and Jacob stay to help Mr. Yuy fix the back fence or do I have to send him on his own?” she asked in an annoyed tone.
Inwardly, Heero cringed at the use of his last name. Never in his life did is sound so wrong. Sure, many people had called him by his last name. But that was while he was working with the Preventers. He was a civilian now… right?
“What do you say, fellas? You want to or not?” Mitch flicked her long strawberry blond braided hair over her shoulder and looked quite bored at the idea. “It’s not like I can’t manage without you.”
Jacob frowned at Mitch but responded to Lea. “Yeah, I’ll stay.” Orson nodded his answer. His mouth was full of food. Jacob felt he had to translate. “You’ve got the both of us!”
It was final. Heero didn’t mind the help. Working with people like Quatre and Duo helped him realize some things were finished faster with assistance. What Heero did mind was working with Jacob. Heero didn’t like the way Jacob would smile at Lea. He didn’t want the man doing anything to Lea. At least Orson didn’t try holding Lea’s hand or do or saying something silly just to get her attention. ‘I’ve worked under worse conditions and had to deal with Duo.’ Then again, Duo was a walk in the park compared to this man. ‘Why should I be concerned how he treats Lea?’ he wondered as he followed the group out of the house. ‘My job is to tend to the yard and the house. Her affairs are none of my business.’ Even though it was true, Heero still didn’t feel right. He felt like punching Jacob.
Parked out front were two trucks. One with the bed filled with lumber, a bucket full of nails and tools. The other was empty and looked like it needed a wash. “You can take the trail to the back,” Lea instructed. “The fence is down in the usual spot.”
Orson rolled his eyes, “Damn those McCarts.” Jacob was about to open his mouth when Orson grabbed him by the collar. “C’mon, boy. Leave the ladies alone.” Jacob glared at him but remained silent. They headed to the truck with the lumber.
Heero followed, curiosity peaked. “Who are the McCart’s? Why did they tear down Ms. Lea’s fence?” Heero had been told several times he sounded very demanding whenever he asked a question. Jacob had the usual reaction most people gave: startled, wide-eyed and confused.
Orson merely laughed. “Don’t waste time, do you, soldier?” Heero stiffened as he climbed into the back seat. Jacob’s mouth dropped open but, thankfully, didn’t say anything. “Don’t sweat the small stuff. You’ll meet the McCarts soon enough.”
~::*::~
Mitch and Lea stood on the front porch silently watching the men drive away. It was a clear, sunny, cool morning despite all the rain from the night before. Conditions would remain pleasant until around the evening hours. Another storm was planned to help usher in the autumn/winter cycle. With the three of them working, the fence would be completed long before the storm’s arrival.
“So that’s the new kabana boy?” Mitch mused out loud once the truck disappeared behind the barn. “Two enthusiastic thumbs way up!” She held up her hands with the thumbs up and smiled brightly. “You’re going to do something with that antisocial attitude of his, right?”
Lea sighed and headed for the door. “He’s only been here for barely twenty-four hours.” She stopped at the door and turned to Mitch with a frown, “And it’s not my fault he’s a little antisocial! It’s bad enough I need the help. He might want to keep to himself.” The last statement was more to herself. Lea’s past was something she never wanted to share with anyone. It was bad enough her true friends knew.
“You shouldn’t beat yourself up, Lea.” Mitch was silent as she followed Lea into the house. Silence normally meant she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure. She was known to remain that way until talked to. Lea had known Mitch to stay silent for hours. They had walked to the back of the house and was heading to the workshop when Lea couldn’t take it anymore. She hated Mitch’s if-you-don’t-have-anything-nice-to-say treatment.
“What!?!” Lea burst out, stopping short, turning around and tossing her hands into the air.
Mitch grabbed Lea by the shoulders. She looked serious, which made Lea start to feel afraid. “I have a funny feeling he’s going to be good for you. In more ways that one if you catch my drift. You’ve got to be willing to let him in.” Lea’s eyes narrowed. She didn’t like where this was going. Mitch was determined to continue and didn’t let the icy stare stop her. “You should tell him everything. It’s only a matter of time before the McCarts and the Carters start in on you again. That fence is just a warning shot of the port bow! And what about Mayor Rodecker? Won’t he make a social call soon?” Lea heaved a sigh and rolled her eyes. Mitch didn’t notice. She was on a roll, “OH! And let’s not forget your leg! The whole town’s still swimming in gossip over that!”
“How long did I say Mr. Yuy’s been here?” Lea asked in a tone that matched her stare. Mitch opened her mouth to retaliate but dropped her hands and lowered her head in defeat. “If he is as worthy as you believe, I will tell him everything. Until then, Mr. Yuy remains on a need-to-know bases. Right now all he needs to know is the McCarts/Carters issue.” Lea turned to head into the workshop but paused to add, “I’m sure Orson and Jacob are filling him in.”
Mitch groaned, rolling her beautiful green eyes, “I know Jacob is!”
~::*::~
Heero, Orson, and Jacob surveyed the busted the fence. The fence was made of wood in a crisscross square pattern. It looked like a professional had set it up a while ago. The wool had changed color. A good twelve feet of it was pulled apart. At least, that’s what it looked like to Heero as they drove closer. The planks were scattered across the landscape like someone broke it apart and tossed it over their shoulder. Once outside the truck, up close to the wrecked fence, he could tell it had been hammered apart. The boards weren’t broken or damaged in any other way besides being disassembled. Each blank did have a brand mark.
“Big m, little c, big c,” Jacob said in disgust as he crouched down for a closer look. “The McCart-Carter Cattle Ranch brand. Where those assholes even thinking when they did this?”
Orson snorted and asked sarcastically, “McCart’s men?”
Jacob stood back up dusting the dirt off his jeans and nodding, “Yeah, you’re right.”
The hairs on the back of Heero’s neck stood up. He scanned the land beyond the fence. On a hill a good distance away sat a man on a beautiful black horse. At his hip was strapped a gun and built into the visible boot a knife. ‘People mean business when they bring weapons.’ His eyes narrowed and he had the desire to have his gun with him. ‘What do they want with her?’ “McCart’s or Carter’s?” Heero asked.
Jacob and Orson followed Heero’s line of vision. Orson frowned, “Fucker’s are fast. Must of seen our dust trail.” He glanced over at Heero who was waiting as patiently as possible for an answer to his question. Orson figured it would be best not to let him wait. “That’s one of Carter’s men. Don’t pay him any attention. He’s just there to make sure we don’t go wandering into their territory.”
Heero couldn’t help but notice the lone rider on the hill. He was able to focus on his work but took time to track the rider’s movements. Their watcher dismounted as they started on the fence’s reconstruction, yet remained on the hill. This bugged Heero. What would the man gain by watching them? How many times had the fence been torn down? Why do Carter and McCart tear the fence down? Heero could guess the last question. Land battles. It was one of the oldest reasons in the book. Lea’s land was fertile and a good amount. It would make a fine addition to anyone’s cattle ranch.
Even though he wanted to grill Orson and Jacob for information, Heero decided to try another tactic. Duo had shown him the fine art of letting a person talk. This didn’t always work. One would have to find the right kind of person; one that liked to talk and would give information freely. Past experience dictated Jacob would have been the best candidate. It took a couple of hours of work and waiting to hit pay dirt.
Jacob wiped his brow with the handkerchief he pulled from his back pocket. “You’d think they’d of cooled it down by now, huh?” No one answered. Jacob looked like he didn’t notice. Instead he turned his attention to the man on the hill. Heero looked up, too. The man pulled a walkie-talkie out of his pack pocket. “Now he’s tellin’ on us!” Jacob shook his head and turned back around. His eyes were blazing with anger. “If Ms. Lea and Mitch weren’t so close, I’d stomp my boot clear down his throat! Damn them for being so fucking greedy. Buying up every piece of land they can get their grubby hands on!” He slammed his fist on one of the crossbars. Orson was clouding up. Jacob took it for him understanding his anger. “You know they don’t make their deals legal. I bet you it’s their fault Lea’s got that busted leg and Doc Z’s…”
“Shut it, boy!” Orson snapped. Jacob paled under his heated gaze. “It ain’t our place to say anything. Got it?” Jacob nodded franticly, eyes wide with fear. Heero had never seen anyone come so close to his Death Stare as Orson was at that moment. He had a new found appreciation for the man. Orson said to Heero in a slightly miffed voice, “When Ms. Lea’s ready to say so, she will. Don’t start asking a bunch of questions or sticking your nose where she says it shouldn’t be. That’s why the last caretaker’s gone.” Heero gave a short nod for his answer. Orson visibly eased up. “YOU!” he barked at Jacob, “Get the next post and board!”
Heero knew the last part of Jacob’s outburst was hearsay. Hearsay, however, always had a grain of truth somewhere in it. Heero’s stomach twisted. If these Carter/McCart people were as shady as Jacob says, then Lea was in trouble. Possibly she had been in trouble for a long time. The rider still perched on the hill didn’t help Heero think better of them. Didn’t he leave Relena to get away from the damsel-in-distress routine?
The fake sun was high in the sky. The last section of fence was going up. Carter’s man disappeared. Spirits were still a little dark. Jacob remained silent for the rest of the job. Orson barked orders when needed but also remained silent. Heero used the time to mentally assess the situation. Lea was obviously in trouble with the McCart-Carter Cattle Ranch breathing down her neck. It would mean trouble for him if he stayed with Lea. No matter how many times he told himself it wasn’t his fight, Heero found himself not believing it.
“Everyone’s where they are for a reason.” Quatre told Heero that a thousand times. He could understand the reason why he was working for Relena for as long as he did. He could even understand the reason why he was a Gundam Pilot. He couldn’t fathom why he was still with Lea. Clearly she was in trouble. She would just be someone else to save. Heero new he could walk away from that and not lose sleep.
‘Walk away,’ logic told him. ‘There’s nothing for you here.’
There was a small whispering voice that argued, ‘Yes there is…’

Mitch left shortly after her pep talk, which gave Lea plenty of time to think. She worked on finishing up the latest blanket on the weaving loom as she mulled over what to tell Heero. Although she said he was on a need-to-know bases, Lea wanted to tell him everything. It was dangerous to do so. All the ones before him had left the moment McCart-Carter’s Cattle Ranch showed up on the property. She had managed to hide Mayor Rodecker’s little visits by saying she had to go into town for a couple of days. Mitch or Umeko, her neighbor from across the street, would house-sit for her until she returned.
As for the gossip about her father’s death… That was a lot like dealing with the McCart-Carter’s Cattle Ranch. The gossip and accusations had caused her to find solitude in the farm lands. Her peaceful living was quickly falling apart of late.
Meeting Mr. Barton was a godsend amongst all the turmoil. He was kind and highly professional. It took him over a month to find a person to fill the caretaker position. When he did, Mr. Barton sent over one person: Mr. Heero Yuy. Lea wanted to ask where he found Mr. Yuy. The poor man must have just stepped off the shuttle. Also, there was an air of familiarity between the two. Had they met before? Perhaps on Earth? If both of them were on Earth, why did they leave? Did they have dark pasts to run from, too?
That last thought made Lea laugh. Everyone had some skeleton hidden. She figured it was the amount of skeletons that would make a person close up. “I have far too many for my liking,” Lea admitted. The McCart-Carter issue would have to be enough for Heero… for now.
On cue, the truck pulled up to the front of the house. Lea sighed and said to the ceiling, “Give me strength.”
~::*::~
Heero watched Orson and Jacob drive away. Both of them had been quiet on the way back. Orson was still stewing over Jacob’s outburst. Jacob was trying to keep his head by not talking. Heero didn’t want to provoke Orson any. He remained silent as well. He was dropped off without a word, just half-hearted waves. A touchy subject that McCart-Carter Cattle Ranch.
Light footsteps behind him brought Heero out of his thoughts. Lea stood beside him with a frown. “They didn’t say goodbye.” She eyed Heero, searching for something he had no problems showing. “Something happened, huh?” There was fear in her eyes. Heero nodded. His stomach twisted. He passed it off for being hungry. Lea sighed and shook her head. “This is going to be the week from hell,” Lea whispered to herself. Heero heard it but gave no outward sign to Lea. She smiled at him, “Care to clean up and catch your breath? It’s a long story.”
Heero nodded and followed Lea into the house. She held herself like nothing had happened, strong and confident. Yet, he saw the fear and sadness in her eyes. Heero realized her expression was what was making his stomach churn. He had seen that look in the eyes of the Romafeller soldiers when he was captured by them, the people in the Cinq Kingdom… Relena after he had rescued her from the pirates. It never had the negative, I-want-to-kill-something-to-make-it-stop affect on him as it was that moment.
He retreated to his room to clean up. He took his time trying to think of a way to not sound like he was interrogating her. Heero gave up when all he could think of was the torture tactics Dr. J had taught him. Patience would have to do. With his mind made up, Heero found Lea in the living room working on a small weaving loom. She didn’t hear him walk in. Heero cleared his throat.
Lea flinched slightly but regained her nerves quickly when she realized it was just Heero. “Have a seat,” she motioned to the ottoman at her side. Her hands were shaking slightly as she worked the loom. It was the only sign of her nervousness.
Heero stomach twisted again as he sat down. He took a slow deep breath and switched all emotions off. It was another technique Dr. J had taught him. To have no emotions clouding reason was the best possible course of action for him when he was unsure of what to do.
Lea finished the line she was working on before turning to Heero. She didn’t want to stop. It was like a security blanket for her. Focusing on the weaving would prevent her from seeing the disappointed look she didn’t want to see. ‘Face the firing squad with dignity and grace,’ she told herself. In a surprisingly calm voice, Lea asked, “Please tell me what happened out there. Or did Orson swear you to secrecy?”
“No, Ma’am.”
Lea held up a hand, “Lea, please.”
Heero nodded. His stomach settled slightly, “No, Ms. Lea. We were able to fix the fence without a problem. One of Carter’s men watched us and relayed our progress to an unknown source. Jacob expressed his… displeasure with being watched. He also said the McCart-Carter Cattle Ranch is buying up land. He started to mention something about your leg and father but Orson silenced him.” Heero paused to make sure all was told. When he was sure he added, “When we finished with the fence, Carter’s look-out left. Nothing else happened.”
He remained emotionless as Lea’s expression went from shock to anger to despair. His stomach did a flop. The urge to destroy ripped through him in an instance. It caught him so unaware that his hands clinched into fists. Thankfully Lea didn’t see it. She was too wrapped up in her own thoughts. Heero took another slow, deep breath. Control was regained.
He returned his focus to Lea. She was staring at her weaving loom. She looked determined. “I try to live a quiet, simple life, Mr. Yuy.”
“Heero.” The name was off his lips before he could censor the thought or forceful tone.
Lea blinked a couple of times before smiling. “Heero,” she whispered. A pink hue shaded her cheeks. The smile and the blush was short lived. Lea’s face returned to a serious expression. “The McCart-Carter Cattle Ranch has been trying to buy my land ever since my parent’s death.” Her hands became of interest to her. “I wouldn’t sale. I won’t ever sell. This is my home and I plan to grow old here.” Her eyes became distant as she said in a soft voice, “It’s all I have left.”
Heero’s eyes widened. His mind came to a screeching halt, stuck on those words. It defied all logic. In his life, Heero had learned that the order must be followed to completion no matter what. Working with Relena and the other G Boys showed him the order wasn’t everything. There was always something to consider before acting. What was there to consider here? Lea was just one person. She was doing all she could to keep McCart and Carter’s people from tearing her from her home. But she was not a fighter. Lea had no combat experience that he could tell. She couldn’t keep up any legal battles, if any, against them. Heero figured she didn’t have the money to do so. ‘Why? It may be all she has left but why fight? Is it really worth her life if it came to that?’ Heero found Lea watching him, face wrinkled with worry. His hands began to sweat. ‘This isn’t what I was looking for. I wanted a life away from this. I want peace and quiet but…’ Heero noticed Lea looked ready to crack. Her calm, controlled appearance was lacking in confidence.
“You don’t have to stay.” Her voice was shaky and weak. She tried to hide her fear with a smile. “I mean, I’d understand. The other caretakers have left because of far less…”
“I’m not like them.” A flare of anger flashed through Heero but he was able to hide it externally and verbally. The comparison upset him greatly. Yet, he didn’t know why. None of the other caretakers should matter to him. None of Lea’s problem should matter to him… but it did.
His simple emotionless statement brought hope to Lea’s face. Heero’s twisting stomach gripped even more. She looked less fragile with a genuine smile. “So… you’ll stay?”
“Yes.” Again his voice was emotionless and expression blank. It shocked him that he said it. He was prepared to say no. This wasn’t his fight but something was compelling him to stay. Another flicker of anger flashed through him. It registered on his face only for a few seconds. Lea didn’t catch it. Her face lit up with a huge smile. Heero’s mental block of his emotions cracked. He blushed.
“You have no idea how happy that makes me feel!” Lea waved away Heero’s confused look. “I’ll still understand if you want to leave at any given moment. I won’t dock you any pay. In fact, I’ll pay you double of whatever you work. And if you need references, I’ll help.”
“That will not be necessary,” Heero said calmly. The heat left his cheeks and his heart returned to normal. He had said yes. He was committed. No sense trying to back out of it now. Heero stood, keeping his gaze locked with hers, “I said I would stay. If there isn’t anything else, Ms. Lea, I would like to survey the rest of the fence.”
“Um… sure.” Lea was dumbfounded. ‘How the hell could he act so damn calm? Does nothing scare him?’ She noted his emotionless face and eyes. ‘Yeah, he’s not your normal caretaker.’
Lea’s searching eyes made him uneasy. Heat returned to his cheeks and pulse slowly began to rise. The seat of his pants became slightly uncomfortable. He wanted to bolt out the door. Heero turned to walk away and stopped. ‘Focus, soldier. She’s just your employer.’ “There’s a tuck in the barn. Does it run?”
“Oh, Dad’s truck? No. It’s been broke for a while now.” Lea frowned at the sudden change in him. One minute, he was acting like he wanted to listen to her dilemma. Now he seemed to want to get back to work?
“When I’m done checking the fence, I’ll start on the truck.”
With that, Heero left, grateful he could put some distance between them. He needed time to digest the new information. Having Lea nearby wasn’t helping. It was becoming annoying how her smiles could set his pulse racing. He was also pissed off for saying that he would stay. Logic clearly stated that it wasn’t his fight. He should pack up now and leave but… Something was overriding his logic.
Lea, however, was baffled once again. “Weird man,” she whispered to herself as she watched him walk away. “Maybe Mitch’s right. He is antisocial.”
~::*::~
Shadowy figures riding on black stallions chased after them over the grassy plains. The evil cowboy creatures whooped and yelled swing rope or cattle prods with the letters McC red with heat at the end. The cold night air made steam rise from the cattle prods. Even their demonic steeds looked like they were breathing smoke because of the air. One of the evil cowboys tossed a rope at them. He was able to duck it but she wasn’t. The rope fastened around her waist and slammed her to the ground. She clawed helplessly at the ground as she was dragged away screaming, “Quatre!”
He lunged for her only to dodge a cattle prod. He started after her again but it was too late. She was pulled into the darkness leaving a trail of dust in her wake. The rest of the evil shadow cowboys circled around him waving the red hot pokers at him. There was no escape. He had no weapon to fight back with. They had taken her without any reason. Feeling absolutely helpless and unbridled anger growing, Quatre dropped to his knees and screamed.
Hands gripped his shoulders shaking him harshly. Quatre grabbed the demonic cowboy’s wrist and twisted. The cowboy yelp. It was a feminine voice. Startled, Quatre let go and sat up. It was still dark but the demonic cowboys were gone. The grassy plains were replaced with his bedroom. His sheets were tangled around his legs and his heart was still racing.
“Quatre?” Relena knelt at his side rubbing her wrist. “Are you alright?” Quatre gently brought Relena’s wrist to his lips. He was shaking, furious at himself for hurting her. She picked up on that. “You didn’t hurt me, Love.”
Quatre smiled weakly, “Always strong, no matter what, huh?” He pulled her into his arms. “It was just a dream.”
A weird disturbing dream. He wasn’t going to admit that to her, though. There was something off about it. Everything that happened in the dream was for a reason and for someone else. ‘Heero… Yes, that has to be it! What would have him dreaming about demonic cowboys?’
“That dream had you thrashing about like a fish out of water.” Relena frowned when Quatre flashed her one of his trademark grins. “Don’t play it off.” She tickled him on his ribs, “Tell me.”
Quatre fell back laughing. Very seldom did Relena resort to this sort of tactic. He loved it when she did. “Stop,” he squealed when he had all he could take. “Ok! OK! I’ll tell you!” Relena stopped but didn’t give up her set on his stomach. She waited as he regained his breath. “You and I were running away from some bad cowboys and one of them took you away.”
Relena’s mouth fell open, “I was kidnapped? And by COWBOYS?” She shook her head laughing and hugged him, “I’m not going anywhere, Love. I prefer blond Arabians.”
Quatre snuggled close to her. Heero would have to figure out whatever it was on his own. Quatre still had the rest of the week to work through his and Relena’s schedule and he wasn’t about to back out of his agreement now. Relena needed her rest. Besides, he’s gone through some restless nights due to Heero’s emotions before.

Lea had a long evening working on the weaving loom in her workshop. She had completely forgotten about dinner and Heero. By the time she had finished the blanket, it was heading off to two in the morning.
Worried, she hurried into the house. Dirty dishes were stacked in the sink. Heero had fended for himself. Lea checked the house for him. He was fast asleep in his room. He looked peaceful and … inviting. He was lying on his back with his arms draped over his bare chest. His normally messy hair seemed to be spread out around his head like a dark brown halo. The blankets were pushed to his waist giving her a clear look at his sculpted abs.
‘Nice…’ She caught herself moving for a closer look at the scars on his chest and arms and left before any more bad thoughts took over her body.
~::*::~
Once the door was closed, Heero’s eyes popped open. He heard her footsteps move down the hall to her room. “Kuso,” he groaned.
He had thought Lea was going to come in. He was ready to ask if she needed something. The words froze in his throat when he heard her whisper, “Nice.” She sounded sensual and like a predator. He didn’t dare open his eyes while she was there. He would have pulled her into his bed and not let her go until he was good and ready.
Heat gathered between his legs. A soft, tortured groan escaped him again. ‘No! Employer! Find someone else to fantasize about!’ She was far better than demon cowboys but Heero rolled over and forced himself to sleep.
~::*::~
The door slowly creaked open. Lea sat up and gasped. Heero stalked into the room, beautifully bare chest with his sheets wrapped around his waist. Miraculously, the sheets never fell away as he crawled onto the bed. All thought ceased as Lea watched Heero’s muscles flex as he moved towards her.
Heero gently pushed her back onto the bed and settled over her. Lea’s mind was able to ask one question before it was fogged over with desire: ‘Is this real?’ It felt real. She could feel his weight, his heat, his lips. She sighed in delight as he trailed light kisses from her neck to her lips. Lea kissed Heero eagerly, wanting to show him just how much she needed him. She wanted to lose herself in his arms, forgetting reality and indulging in something that was completely wrong…
To her dismay, Heero pulled away. He smiled sadly at her frustrated frown and opened his mouth. The annoying sound of her alarm buzzed loudly from Heero’s gaping mouth.
Lea jerked and sat up. Sunlight shined brightly through the curtains. Her alarm buzzed happily on her nightstand. There was no Heero or extra sheets and her bedroom door was closed. Her shoulders slumped, ‘It was just a dream?’ Frustration grew as Lea turned off the alarm and reluctantly climbed out of bed. ‘Face it girl,’ she told herself. ‘Hell will freeze over before that becomes reality.’
She paused to ponder the possibility and immediately gave up on it. ‘You can have your dreams but they must remain that way.’ Lea glanced at the wall separating Heero’s room from her own and sighed sadly before getting ready for the day.
