Wufei fought his way to consciousness, pulling at the tube running under his nose. He felt groggy and his limbs were heavy, a sure sign of anesthetics.
“Now, now, honey, you need to leave that alone.”
He peeled his eyes open, which was no easy feat, and glared at the nurse. The expression did little to faze her, apparently, as she just smiled. “Commander Une and some other Preventers are waiting outside to speak with you. Think you're up for it?”
He huffed, and then cringed as it pulled at the injuries in his chest and stomach. “Of course,” he croaked. “Help me sit up.”
She raised an eyebrow. “I don't think-”
“Either you help me sit up, or I'll do it by myself and risk pulling out stitches. You should just be glad I'm being good enough to ask for help.”
She sighed and raised the bed. By the time his head was raised by a couple feet he was clenching the side rails. “Good enough,” he murmured.
She gave him another smile, this one holding a twinge of 'I told you so', and left the room. Moments later, Une, Heero, Trowa, Quatre, and Duo filed in and surrounded the bed. Une pursed her lips as she gazed down at him. “Well, aren't you a mess?”
He raised an eyebrow at her tone. “Have I done something wrong?”
Quatre put a hand on his shoulder. “Not wrong, but... Wufei, why didn't you tell us you were in trouble? Drinking isn't the answer.”
He grimaced. “I wasn't looking for an answer.”
“Well, that's glaringly obvious,” Duo grunted. “How long have you known someone was after you?”
Wufei's brows drew together. “I wasn't aware anyone was after me until my apartment was invaded this morning.”
“Who was it?”
He shook his head. “I have no idea. I didn't recognize them.”
“How many were there?” Heero asked.
“Two.”
Une tapped her fingertips on her lips. “I've seen you take down five by yourself. How did two get you?”
“I was,” his face flushed, “wasn’t very coherent at the time.”
“You mean drunk,” Duo muttered.
“What's got you in a foul mood?” Wufei demanded.
He scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry, I didn't get much sleep and this morning totally sucked.”
Wufei snorted. “That’s an understatement and I'm pretty sure I received the worst end of the deal.”
He nodded. “Do you know Marcus Knight?”
He thought for a moment and shook his head. “Should I?”
Duo brightened. “See, I told you guys it wasn't him.”
Heero rolled his eyes. “Duo, just because Wufei doesn't know who he is, that doesn't mean he's not trying to kill him. Besides, that could be an alias. We can't find any information on him that predates AC 200.”
Trowa nodded his agreement. “Maybe you should describe him.”
Duo sighed. “He's a doctor. About six feet tall, mid-forties, brown hair, gray eyes, he's got a scar that runs from his forehead to chin, stupid red plastic glasses that make him look...” He trailed off as he saw Wufei's face grow pale, eyes shining with very real fear. “What is it?”
“He's a psychopath who performs experiments mixing biochemicals and technology, not a doctor. But I knew him as Gregory Matthews.” He practically spat the name. “He's a vile, egotistical son of a bitch.”
Heero reached down and put a hand on Wufei's shoulder, trying to calm the Chinese man. He jerked it back when Wufei jumped from the contact. “What did he do to you?”
Wufei ignored the question. “Duo, how do you know that man?” he asked in a strained whisper.
“He saved my life.”
He gaped. “Saved your... What was his price?”
“Huh?”
His hands balled into fists in his lap. “He never does anything without getting something in return.”
“Hey, I paid him!” He raised a shoulder. “It was OZ's money, but I still paid him.”
Wufei shook his head. “He doesn't care about money. He's got enough to put the Winner family to shame. He always takes a price, whether you know it or not!”
Duo was baffled. “Well I don't know it. He didn't take anything from me but my money.”
Wufei fell back to the pillows, perplexed and exhausted from his outburst. It didn't make sense. The man wasn't one to do something out of the kindness of his heart. He had no 'kindness of the heart'. He had to have gotten something for his efforts. He closed his eyes. “Doesn't make sense,” he whispered.
“How do you know him, Chang?”
His shoulders tensed and he shook his head. Quatre wanted to reach down and pat his shoulder, but after the reaction Heero had received, he held himself back. “Get some rest, Wufei.” He sent a meaningful look to the others. “We can get the information later.”
“Just a moment,” Une said. “Chang, does he have any reason to want you dead?”
He flinched, but didn't open his eyes or say anything. He didn't need to; the reaction was enough answer for them. Duo strode purposely from the hospital wing. Preventers looked at him strangely as he marched through the halls toward his desk and he suddenly remembered he wore tattered jeans and a t-shirt, and he didn't have a clue what the condition of his braid was. But none of that mattered. He needed answers, and he'd beat them out of Marcus if he had to.
He sat at his desk and booted up his computer. “Are you all right?”
He raised an eyebrow as he looked up to Quatre. “How the hell could I be all right? Wufei's right, this doesn't make sense. It's like we know two different people sharing the same body.”
The blond bit his lip. “Duo, when are you supposed to see him again?”
“It should be coming up soon. I never know exactly.”
“How do you get in touch with him?” Heero asked, leaning into the cubicle next to Quatre, Trowa behind them.
Duo shook his head, looking back to his computer. “I don't. He gets in touch with me when it's time for a checkup. The man's impossible to find if he doesn't want to be.”
“Even for you?” Trowa asked in surprise.
The skin around Duo's mouth turned white as he pressed his lips together, hands flying over the keys. “I never really looked as hard as I could before, but I've got a bit more incentive now.”
Heero turned to do his own search and Duo glanced to him. “Heero, do me a favor.”
“What?”
“When we find him – if he is responsible – you can't just kill him.”
“Why not?”
He slumped in his chair. “Several reasons. We're not at war anymore. Killing without reason is murder and you'd go to jail. The system isn't perfect, but he will pay for attempting to kill an officer of the law. And,” he took a breath, “I need to find another doctor who can help me before I let you kill him.”
Heero grunted. “What makes you think I'd kill him anyway?” All eyes turned to him with flat stares. “What? I follow the law.”
“Heero, you'd kill Relena if you thought she tried to hurt ‘Fei.” Heero started and Duo smiled softly. “Yeah, we all know you got the hots for the dragon.”
“Everyone except for Wufei,” Quatre amended.
Heero's face tinged pink, but his scowl stayed in place. “I do not have the hots for him.”
Violet, emerald, and blue eyes gazed at him until he felt his face heat. “All right, fine, I admit I'm attracted to him. Happy?”
“Ha!” Mitchell jumped up from her chair and scanned the room. “Adams! Where you at? You owe me fifty bucks!”
He came out of the break room. “Why?”
“Yuy's got a thing for Chang.”
Heero ground his teeth, glaring at his grinning friends. “I'm glad you're all amused.”
Quatre hid a giggle behind his hand. “Come on, Heero, there's no reason to be mad. You should just make a move. In fact, he can't run away for the moment so you should head back to the infirmary and lay a big one on him.”
Heero clenched his fist. “Have you forgotten there's someone out there trying to kill him? I don't think now is the time to be playing matchmaker.”
“Lighten up,” Duo muttered. “Wufei is safe at the moment, no permanent damage done. He'll recover and he's protected. He's not gonna keel over any time soon. Now, either go kiss him or get your butt at your computer and help me find Knight.”
