He slid through the shadows fluidly, keeping a wary watch for any sign that he was being followed. It was tedious, a routine that had long since grown old and left him longing for just one night where he could walk the streets without being on alert. He paused as his prey came into view. The prey was a worthless man who reeked of the blood from the woman he'd brutally raped and murdered.
He paused before he could reach him as two shadows converged at the opening of the alley. He sneered as two more appeared on the other end. The main question was: Were they after him or the man? If they hadn't seen him, he could disappear while they fed. If they had... He fiddled with his main weapon against them, cursing himself for only having two.
He watched the second pair remain still as the first descended on the man. He didn't even have time to scream as his life was bled away from him. As the first pair stood, wiping their mouths, four sets of eyes fell on him. Had they been following him? Watching as he tracked the man? And, more importantly, did they know who he was?
“Come out, come out, little one,” a melodious voice called. “We've no intention of harming you.”
He smirked. It was a strong charm and he could feel the compulsion it carried, but such spells had no effect on him. Nevertheless, it would be to his advantage to play along. He stepped forward into the dim light filtering from the street lamps and looked up to the tall man with the appropriate wide-eyed gaze the charm inflicted. Inwardly, he was cursing the 'little one' remark.
A cool hand gripped his chin. “Oh my, but you are a young thing, and pretty... very pretty.”
He kept his hands deceptively loose at his sides as the other three examined his face. “Thank you.”
“Tell me, what is your name?”
Full lips curved into a soft, sultry smile. “Would you really like to know?”
“Oh yes.”
He leaned forward slightly and, with a move so quick none of them saw him even twitch; he embedded a sharp wooden blade in the man's chest. “Chang Wufei.”
The man's jaw dropped, revealing his fangs, as Wufei yanked the stake out and spun, slicing one of the other's neck, momentarily incapacitating him. He wielded another stake in his left hand as he jabbed it through the third man's chest, cursing when it snapped.
His head jerked back as the fourth snagged his hair and yanked. He grabbed the small crossbow that he had fashioned on his own to fit in his hand like a gun, pointed it over his shoulder, and sent a bolt through the vampire's face. He shoved the man away and turned to face the second who was regaining his feet with an angered hiss through his canines.
Wufei crouched, spinning the stake between his fingers. “You sure you want to keep going? You maybe have eighth the amount of power as the Charmer, and he had no effect on me.”
“You're an abomination, Chang.”
He snarled. “And you're a pathetic fool.”
The vampire jumped and Wufei spun, grabbed his arm and shoved his foot into the man's back, pinning him to the wall of the alley. He looked over his shoulder as he raised the crossbow and released a bolt into the fourth vampire's chest. Dropping the bow, he put both hands to the last vampire's arm and pulled until it tore free of the shoulder, dripping blood down the night walker's side.
He grabbed the vampire's throat, silencing his scream. Wufei shoved his last stake into the vampire's back. As it slid between his ribs and into his heart, he quit fighting and slid to the ground.
Wufei stepped back and glanced at his watch. Two hours till sunrise. He decided to leave the bodies where they were, as they would burn to ash once the sun hit them anyway. He tried to pull the stake free and cursed again as he realized it was stuck.
“Thank you, gentlemen,” he muttered sarcastically. “Once again my night is ruined.” He left the alley, dismal mood about as low as it could possibly be.
He leaned against a chain link fence and sighed, rubbing his eyes. He wanted out of the cursed city; away from the underworld that had so cruelly intruded into his life. His senses came back alive and he took a long steady breath as he looked several blocks up the road to see two figures come out of a side street and head in the opposite direction from him. He tripped over his breaths as he saw a long rope of chestnut hair and next to him a mop of golden waves.
What the hell were they doing there? This was not a safe place and Quatre simply screamed victim. He followed them, getting near enough to hear their whispered discussion.
“Don't care what you say, Quat, this place is creepy.”
The blond chuckled, but it sounded strained. “What? The God of Death is afraid of the dark?”
Wufei froze as he saw shadows moving across the street, obviously aiming for the oblivious pair. He launched himself to crouch between them and their would-be attackers. Appraising pale blue eyes gazed down at him with malevolence.
“Well, this is a surprise. It isn't like you to come out of hiding.”
“You can't have them.”
Duo fell back, putting himself between Quatre and the sudden danger. His hand fell on his gun at his hip, but his eyes traveled between the obvious threat and Wufei. His hair was free of the pony tail they were used to, falling more than half-way down his back. He wore black cargo pants, heavy boots, and a black tank top that sculpted to his firm, muscular torso. Blood streaked his arms but Duo couldn't tell how much of it was Wufei's. His attention was drawn back to the smirking man with pale eyes.
“Are they friends of yours? I wasn't aware you had any.” His eyes narrowed. “Especially humans.”
Quatre fought to keep his panic under control under the onslaught of the man's utter hatred and malice. This wasn't the reunion he'd been anticipating.
Wufei snarled. “You're no match for me, Water Born. Do you really want to try it?”
“You're outnumbered.”
Wufei laughed outright, a menacing sound if Duo ever heard one. “That's what four others believed earlier, you may find their bodies waiting for the sun in an alley not far from here.” He flicked his eyes to the nervous man behind the one who spoke. “Besides, he's even weaker than you are. Save yourselves the embarrassment and get out of here.”
The nervous man took the out and fled. The other growled low in his throat and flew at Wufei. Onyx eyes rolled at his stupidity. He easily grabbed the hand reaching for his neck and twisted until the wrist snapped. He pressed his free hand to the man's face and shoved him to the ground, dropping his knees into the man's stomach. He reached for his crossbow, only to find he'd never retrieved it from the alley.
He yanked his dagger from the other leg strap, twirled it, and slammed it into the man's chest. A silent scream dropped his mouth. Wufei pulled a vial from one of his many pockets and poured some liquid into the open mouth, careful to keep it from touching his own skin.
“Dawn is in less than two hours. It would take you three at least to recover enough to move.” He stood. “Let's hope your friend returns before then.” He turned to Quatre and Duo.
The blond clutched at his chest as he received his first glimpse at Wufei's face. His skin was washed pale in the dim streetlight, spattered with blood, as was the rest of his body. While he was still Wufei, there was something off. His already handsome face appeared far more beautiful than Quatre remembered.
“Follow me,” he commanded in a soft, dead voice.
They exchanged glances, but did as told. Quatre felt the frustration and anger boil in Wufei, but underneath was a note of happiness that he tried to force back. They moved through back alleys and darkened streets until Wufei halted them at a corner, a soft hiss issuing through his teeth. He turned and quickly ushered them back up the street. After several tense, silent minutes of Wufei weaving through buildings, he stopped and turned.
“Where are you staying?” His eyes flickered briefly to the sky.
Quatre stepped toward him as he answered, but Wufei backed away. The blond's brows drew together and Wufei was off again. He stopped briefly by a building that had a waterspout and rinsed the blood off his skin and clothes as best he could. They reached the fifth floor of the hotel as the sun rose. Wufei paused outside the door, stepping to the side. He pursed his lips.
“There are two... people in there.”
Quatre nodded. “Heero and Trowa.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Wufei's face. He stepped another foot down the hall. “Make sure the window is covered. Not one ray of light can get into the room.”
Quatre nodded, a curious frown on his face as he ducked into the room. Duo gazed at Wufei as if studying a wild animal.
“What happened to you?”
“I'll explain to everyone at once.”
The door opened and Wufei stepped in after Duo. Quatre frowned at the distance Wufei kept from him, but said nothing as Trowa and Heero were standing warily as they watched him. Wufei studied them, as well, but not with the same level of concern. He focused on Trowa and couldn't say he was surprised.
“Shifter?” Trowa nodded, lips raising in the barest hint of a smile. He looked to Heero and smelled an undercurrent that was not purely human, not by a long shot. “And you?”
Heero folded his arms over his chest. “I'd rather keep that to myself, if you don't mind.”
He smirked ruefully. “Not in the least. Although, I don't see what you have to be ashamed of. Both of you are naturals. I was made, against my will, into what I am.”
Heero's tense pose melted at the weary tone. No matter what else had changed, he was still Wufei. “How did it happen?”
He sighed and leaned against the dresser, rubbing his eyes. He should have left and told them to never try to find him again. It would be the best way to keep them safe, but being in a room with the only people he could trust after years of running was like a balm to his battered soul. But there was a huge downfall that put them too much at risk. He shifted his hand to cover his mouth and nose.
“I can't-” He turned for the door and had no control over what happened next.
Duo fell back into the wall, jaw dropping as several things happened in a matter of seconds. Wufei headed for the door, Quatre tried to stop him, Heero yelled a frantic “Don't”, but it was too late. The blond grabbed Wufei's shoulder and the Chinese man spun, a growl low in his throat. He grabbed Quatre by the neck and pulled his body flush to his own.
Duo cried out as Wufei's lips peeled back to reveal fangs and he sank them into Quatre's neck. He leapt to try and pull Wufei off his friend, but Heero held him back.
“He won't kill him.”
“But he's... Fei's a... he's...”
“A vampire,” Heero supplied.
Duo sat heavily on the bed, watching Quatre clutch at Wufei, an expression on his face that was far from pain. He shook his head. “Vampires aren't real.” He knew it was a stupid statement considering the fact that a very real vampire was sucking blood out of Quatre. He huffed and looked to Heero. “What if he takes too much?”
“He won't,” Heero said with conviction.
A few moments later, Wufei jerked back, eyes wide. He released Quatre and backed away until he hit the wall and slid to the floor. “Quatre, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.”
Quatre reached for the dresser to steady himself and lowered to his knees. He raised a hand to his neck, covering the wound. “Fei?”
He crawled to the blond slowly. “Don't be afraid,” he whispered, pulling the blond's hand away and licking his neck until the blood was gone and the wound was closed.
Quatre shivered and wrapped his arms around Wufei. “I'm not afraid. I... we've been searching for you.”
Wufei pulled away. “You shouldn't have. You should go back home and forget about me.”
“I second that.”
Quatre shot a shocked look at Duo. “How can you say that?”
He waved his hands. “Hello! He just sucked your blood.”
He bit his lip. “He apologized.”
Duo looked to Heero and Trowa for some sort of reason, but could tell by their expressions they were surprised... to find Wufei a vampire, not to find out that there were vampires. But then again, hadn't they said something earlier about not being human, either?
“Okay, I'm glad everyone else seems to be cool with whatever the hell is going on, but I'm way out of the loop. Anyone care to explain the situation to me? 'Cause, frankly, I'm a little freaked. And what the hell is a shifter?”
Heero gazed at Duo calmly. “We'll get to that later. The important thing right now is to find out what's going on here. Correct, Wufei?”
He grunted. “It isn't just here.”
“I've seen more vampires gathered here than I have anywhere in a long time. Do you know why?”
“Partly because I'm here.” He took a breath and looked up to Heero. “How much do you know about vampires?”
Heero sat on the edge of the other bed while Trowa gracefully dropped to the floor by his feet. “I haven't done much research on the night creatures,” he admitted.
Wufei nodded slowly. “There are two basic types of vampires: Water Born and Blood Born. Water Born are born of vampire parents, and are weak at birth. They might have the same potential as their parents, but it can take years, centuries to reach that.
“Those of us who are turned, Blood Born, are instantly filled with a level a power near to that of their master. There is a 'training period' which lasts until the new vampire is in control of their ability. Then they are released to govern themselves.”
“How long does this training period last?”
Wufei raised a shoulder. “It depends on how strong the predecessor is, days to months. The stronger the power, the longer the training.”
There was a moment of silence before Quatre asked the inevitable, but he was pretty sure he already knew. “How long was yours?”
He closed his eyes. “Seven months.”
“Shit!” Duo stared at Wufei with wide eyes. “Who the hell turned you, Dracula?”
“Dracula has been dead for centuries. As have been most of the old vampires. Ancients, obviously, carry the most power. But in the middle of the nineteenth, there was a mass uprising of hunters. They killed off almost all of the powerful vampires, very few ancients remained. Most who still lived were the weak Water Borns who could hide easily due to their lack of power. And the hunters still persisted until now there are some centuries old vampires who have little to no power, and some who have been turned by them who have even less.”
“You never said who turned you.”
Wufei raised an eyebrow as he looked to Heero. “I doubt you would know his name.”
“How old was he?”
Wufei stared at the carpet for a long moment. “Two thousand years old. He was one of the few who stood against the four other remaining ancients who are hunting me.”
Quatre shook his head. “But why? Why are they hunting you?”
He looked to Quatre, black eyes hard as granite. “Because Darien was stronger than all four of them put together, and neither he, nor I, will stand by and allow them to follow through with their plan to turn the human race into little more than cattle." He rubbed his face tiredly. "There's more to it than that, but I think that's enough for right now.”
“Where is he now? The one who turned you?” Trowa asked softly.
“Dead. Two of the four caught up to us and instead of sending their underlings came directly. He stood alone against them so I could get away.”
Duo was still struggling with accepting all of the new information as fact, but he frowned. “But, don't the stories say that if the vampire that turned you into a vampire dies, that you'd go back to being human?”
Wufei quirked a tired smirk. “Stories aren't always correct, Duo. Although, it would be very nice if that were true.”
“So,” Heero cut in again. “It's you against hundreds?”
“Yes.”
Heero nodded. “Then you need our help.”
He shook his head. “It's too dangerous.”
“Danger is nothing new to us,” Quatre whispered.
He looked to the blond he'd missed so terribly. For years he'd cursed the night that had ripped him away just as he'd found the happiness he'd longed for. He didn't want to lose him again, but he didn't want to put him in harm’s way, either. He looked to Trowa and Heero. “Can you protect yourselves against vampires?”
“Yes.”
He looked to Duo and then Quatre. “We'll need to train you how to fight them.”
Duo flopped back on the bed. “Great. Can we discuss that later? I'm tired and I don't think I can handle any more of this freaky shit at the moment.”
Heero sighed. “You'll have to get used to it.”
He snorted. “One of my friends likes to suck blood and another one doesn't seem to mind too much. Freaky, no matter which way you look at it and I don't see myself getting used to it.”
Trowa smirked and looked up to Heero. “Should we see how far we can push him?”
Heero returned the smirk, running his fingers through cinnamon colored hair. “Perhaps we should get the shocks out of the way now.”
Duo propped up to his elbows as Trowa stood and began undressing. He raised an eyebrow. “Um, I hate to break it to you, Tro, but I have seen a naked man before. I'm sure you're built real nice and all, but I ain't-” He cut off, violet eyes widening as Trowa's body melted into the form of a large black panther. He snapped his teeth shut with an audible click when he realized his jaw was hanging open.
Trowa moved to the bed and raised up with his paws on the mattress, laughing green eyes settling on Duo. The braided man reached out and ran his fingers across the soft fur.
“He likes being scratched behind the ears.”
Duo moved to do that and Trowa dropped his chin to his paws, purring. Duo chuckled. “I guess I should've known you were part cat.” He looked to Heero. “You know, this gives a whole new meaning to bestiality.”
Trowa nipped at him and returned to Heero's side, shifting back into his normal form. “That was tacky, Duo.”
“Sorry, I'm not in the mood to try and be proper.” He lay back down. “Now, leave me alone. The human needs sleep.”
Quatre stared at Wufei, unable to take his eyes from the man huddled in the corner, knees drawn to his chest and head tilted back against the wall, eyes closed. Quatre crawled to him and onyx eyes slid open.
“What are you doing?” he whispered.
“Please, Wufei. For four years I've thought of nothing but finding you. Don't push me away.” He cupped his hands to Wufei's face. “I still want you.”
“You shouldn't.”
“Do you still want me?”
He gazed into persistent crystal blue eyes. “I never stopped.”
Quatre softly pressed his lips to Wufei's in a chaste kiss. He pulled back and gazed into Wufei's eyes. Wufei dropped his legs and opened his arms. Quatre curled to his chest and sighed softly. He smiled softly and kissed the top of his head.
“Get some sleep.”
Heero smiled at the couple. “Trowa and I will keep watch, Wufei. I doubt you've had good sleep in years.”
He nodded. “You're right.”
