Lyri could heard a thumping beneath her ear. It was rhythmic and familiar. She could faintly feel the thumping beneath her hand. Something was wrapped around her shoulder, holding her close. She opened her eyes and saw that once again, her and Vegeta were in an intimate position. She had been sleeping with her head on his chest and he was holding her close.
She carefully sat up, so she didn’t wake him, and went to the bathroom. The door closed behind her and she let out the breath she didn’t know she had been holding. She ran her hands over her face before shaking her head.
‘At least he’ll never know this time…’ she thought.
She quickly showered and wrapped a towel around herself before leaving the bathroom. She jumped and hugged the towel closer when she saw Vegeta standing in the room, waiting for her.
“What the hell?” she asked.
He glanced at her. “Hurry up and get dressed.”
Lyri grabbed her bag and retreated to the bathroom. She quickly pulled on a gray training suit and ran a brush through her long, damp, white hair. She walked back out to the bedroom. Vegeta was waiting for her.
“Did you need something?” Lyri asked.
“I have a proposition I’d like to discuss,” Vegeta said.
“Ok…” Lyri said.
Vegeta was silent for a minute, as if trying to figure out how to say what was on his mind. “As you know, my coming of age is coming up. And, as my sister pointed out, my father wishes me to have an intended or a mate by then…” Lyri nodded, not sure where this was going. “I don’t wish to take a mate,” he said. She nodded again. “What I’m proposing is…you pretend to be my intended. To appease my father.”
She stared at him for a minute. “Are you insane?” He glared at her. “Sorry, but Vegeta, this would never work…” she told him. He looked at her, waiting for her explanation. “I wouldn’t appease your father. Look at me! I’m not stupid! I’ve heard the whispers! Your father didn’t even want me to be Kiki’s protector! Imagine what he’ll do if I agree to this! Not only that but you don’t even like me,” Lyri said.
“I don’t like anyone,” Vegeta told her, “And I don’t really give a shit what my father thinks. Think about it if you want but I need an answer before we return home.”
He turned to leave. “Wait...” He turned to look at Lyri. She looked like she was thinking. “I’ll do it...”
Vegeta smirked. “Good.”
“When do we start this ruse?” Lyri asked.
A knock on the door interrupted them. “Hate to break up...whatever you guys are doing in there, but one of you needs to take over watch...” Kiki said through the door.
“Fine...” Vegeta told her. He turned back to Lyri. “My room. After your watch.”
Lyri nodded. They walked out, her going to the cockpit and him to his room. She took the seat next to Kakarot.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hey,” she replied.
“Kiki said that you spent the night with Vegeta again,” Kakarot said.
“The princess needs to mind her own business…” Lyri said.
“So…did you?” Kakarot asked.
Lyri looked at him. “Since when do you like gossip?”
“I don’t…” Kakarot said.
“Good. Because there’s nothing to tell,” Lyri told him.
“Really? But Kiki said that you spent two nights with the prince!” Kakarot said.
Lyri shrugged. “And if I did? Would that be wrong?”
Kakarot shrugged. “I guess not…did you?”
Lyri’s face flushed.
“You did?!” Kakarot asked loudly.
“Not like that!” Lyri hissed, “It was just sleep!”
“So you and Vegeta...” Kakarot started.
“Maybe?” Lyri said with a shrug. It was the truth...kind of. “Anyway, enough gossip...”
“Everything’s good here-“ he said before he was suddenly thrown into Lyri. The ship flipped twice and alarms started blaring.
“Fuck! You weigh a ton!” Lyri said shoving her adoptive brother off herself.
Kakarot settled back into his chair and took control of the ship while Lyri pulled up the ships mechanics.
“What the hell was that?” Kiki asked as she and Vegeta ran up behind them.
“Don’t know. Asteroid, probably,” Kakarot said.
“How the fuck did you two morons manage to hit an asteroid?” Vegeta asked.
“It hit us!” Kakarot snapped, ”Next time we’ll let the space rocks know not to hit us!”
“Shut up, both of you! Shields are down. Autopilot is down. We’re in danger of losing one of the engines...” Lyri said, “We need to find somewhere to land. Now.” She pulled up the map. “There! Pila Luto. It’s small...but it’s our only option at this point.”
Kakarot nodded and steered the ship towards the small planet. Kakarot landed the ship and he and Lyri glanced at each other then at the royal siblings.
“What?” Vegeta snapped.
“It’s nothing...” Kakarot said.
“Don’t sugar coat it, Kakarot. Look, this planet isn’t under Saiyan protection . Or Frieza’s rule...we don’t know how the locals feel about Saiyans. It’s best if you both stay here,” Lyri said.
“We can handle ourselves,” Kiki said.
“Well, I mean, yeah, but...” Lyri said getting up, Kakarot following her, “You...just...both of you stay here. Kakarot, grab your armor and meet me outside.” He nodded and walked off towards the back of the ship. Lyri headed to her room to grab hers. She entered her room and heard the door close behind her. “What? You know I’m right.” She pulled the stretchy yet strong armor over her head and turned to Vegeta. “I meant no disrespect, but...“
He stared at her. “You’re right...”
“We’ll be back shortly,” she told him.
He nodded and she left. Outside the ship, she found Kakarot walking around the ship, looking at the damage.
“How is it?” she asked.
“You said that autopilot and shields were fucked?” Kakarot asked.
“Yeah,” Lyri said.
“Yeah we could make it home without them but...” He led her over to one of the engines. “This...this engine is done for.”
Lyri looked at the smoking engine. “Damn...”
“You guys having trouble?”
The pair turned to look at the voice. A blue-haired woman covered in black grease smiled at them.
“Uh...yeah. Maybe...” Kakarot said.
“I could take a look if you want,” she said.
Kakarot looked at Lyri. “Thanks!” he said.
She walked up to them. “I’m Bulma.” She looked up at the engine. “Damn. Something got you good.”
“Yeah. I’m Kakarot. She’s Lyri,” Kakarot said.
“You mind if I start tinkering with it?” Bulma asked.
“Be my guest. I’m a fighter, not a mechanic,” Kakarot told her.
“Fighter, huh?” Bulma asked, opening up a panel on the engine, “My ex thought that he was a fighter. He wasn’t. Kept getting his ass handed to him but he never learned.”
"Maybe he was trying his best?" Kakarot asked.
"Doubt it," Bulma said, "The only thing Yamcha tried his best at was getting into other women's pants..." She waved away a puff of smoke. “Hmm...gonna need a few parts. I’ll have to go into town to get them...”
“I’ll go with you,” Kakarot said, “I’d like to see the rest of the planet.”
“Not much to see. It’s a tiny planet with nothing on it...” Bulma told him.
Lyri watched them leave, staying with the ship and the royal siblings. She did her own walk around. She fixed a panel that had come loose and was surprised there wasn’t more damage. She walked inside the ship, sat down in the cockpit and pulled up the programs for the shields and autopilot.
“Well...the shields are back up. Probably knocked out temporarily after the hit. But the autopilot is still down...” she muttered to herself. She tapped away at the controls for a few minutes, but couldn’t get it back up. She sighed and sat back in the chair. She thought for a minute. “At least Kakarot and I know how to pilot this thing if we can’t get it back up...”
“Hello?”
Lyri got up and walked outside to see Bulma alone. “Where’s Kakarot?” she asked.
“He stopped to eat at the cafe in town. Was still there when I was done grabbing parts,” Bulma told her.
“I’m going to kill him...” Lyri said.
Bulma giggled and pulled out a small oblong thing and pushed the top of it, tossing it to the ground. A toolbox and all the parts were instantly at her feet.
“What? How?” Lyri asked.
“Hmm? Oh! Something my dad invented. They’re called capsules. They can hold anything,” Bulma explained.
“I’ve never seen anything like that...” Lyri said.
“My dad was quiet the inventor...” Bulma said as she started pulling out the broken pieces from the engine.
“Was?” Lyri asked.
Bulma’s eyes clouded over. “He passed...” she said.
“I’m sorry,” Lyri said.
“You didn’t know. But that’s how I ended up out here. Had to get away after...so I’ve been bouncing around the universe for the past...gosh, I guess it’s been two years now,” Bulma told her.
“So you’re not a local?” Lyri asked.
“Oh, god no,” Bulma told her as she replaced a part, “My home planet is on the other side of the universe.” Bulma worked quickly and quietly. “That should do it!” she said after a couple hours, “Anything else wrong that I could help with?”
“Not unless you know anything about computers,” Lyri told.
“I’m a technological genius,” Bulma told her, “What else is broken?”
“The autopilot. But Kakarot and I can pilot the ship without it,” Lyri told her.
“Let me take a look,” Bulma told her.
Lyri hesitated. “Give me just a minute.” The blue haired woman nodded. Lyri headed inside and knocked on Vegeta’s door. It opened and she walked in. “Engine is fixed and it looks like the shields were only temporarily knocked out,” Lyri told him, “I can’t get the autopilot back up but Kakarot and I could pilot the ship back...”
“Or?” he asked.
“Or we could get it fixed. There’s a girl here that says she’s a genius at these things,” Lyri told him, “However, she’d have to come aboard to fix it.” Vegeta thought for a minute. “She’s not aware that we’re Saiyans. She’s not even from this side of the universe,” she added.
“So you blindly trusted her?” Vegeta asked.
“Kakarot started it and left me his mess when he didn’t return from town,” Lyri said.
“What do you mean Kakarot didn’t return?” Vegeta asked.
“He didn’t return! What else do you want me to tell you? The girl said he was at a cafe...” Lyri told him.
Vegeta pinched the bridge of his nose. “She can fix the damn thing. Go get the clown.” Lyri hesitated. “Go get the idiot! My sister and I will be fine!” he snapped.
“Yes, sir,” Lyri said and she left. She led Bulma to the cockpit and pulled up the program for the autopilot. “I have to go get Kakarot, but I will be back shortly.”
“Ok!” Bulma said, looking fascinated with the equipment before her.
Lyri left the ship, located Kakarot on her scouter and quickly flew off in his direction. When she found him, he was just walking out of the cafe. She flew over to him and landed in front of him. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him.
“Hey, Lyri,” he said with his usual cheerful tone. He noticed that she was glaring daggers at him. “You ok?”
“Ship. Now!” she snapped.
“Geez...fine...” he said and flew back to the ship, Lyri following him.
They landed and walked in the ship. Both were shocked to see their prince helping the blue haired girl.
Lyri nudged Kakarot and he went to his room, knowing that she was mad at him and he’d more than likely get an earful later from both her and Vegeta.
“I see you found the clown...” Vegeta said not looking at her.
“He wasn’t that hard to find,” Lyri told him, “How are things here?”
“Vegeta has been helping me,” Bulma said, “Thank the gods, because I can’t read any of this.”
Lyri felt a small pang of jealousy but shook it off. Vegeta wasn’t her mate or intended. Everything between them was an act. But...she still cared for him and to see him interact so willingly and easily with another female made her feel...upset.
“We’re almost done,” Bulma told her.
Lyri turned to go outside but was stopped by Vegeta saying, “Don’t wander off.”
“Like anyone would miss me if I got lost or was killed...” Lyri muttered.
“I’m sure someone would,” Bulma said.
“Wishful thinking,” Lyri told her.
“Do you not think that I would look for you or avenge your death?” Vegeta asked.
‘Now? He wants to start this act now?’ Lyri thought. “I suppose you would,” she told him.
Bulma tapped on the controls a few times. “What’s it say now?”
“Autopilot is functional,” Vegeta said.
“Great!” Bulma said, “Glad I could help.”
Lyri thought for a moment. “She should come with us...”
“Huh?” Bulma asked.
Vegeta turned to look at her.
“She said she’s a technological genius and she has these things that can carry a lot in a tiny parcel. She could be of use to us,” Lyri explained.
“Do I get a say in this?” Bulma asked.
Vegeta was silent, thinking it over. “You’d be paid well. It’d be the best job you’d ever get.”
Bulma thought for a moment. “I was supposed to take over dad’s company after he died. But the board members ran it into the ground. There’s no salvaging it. So...yeah. I’ll come with you.”
Vegeta nodded.
“I’ll show you to your room,” Lyri told her.
Bulma got up and followed Lyri. “This is it,” she told her. Lyri grabbed her bag.
“I’m not kicking you out of your room, am I?” Bulma asked.
“You’re not,” Lyri told her.
“Ok. I’d feel bad if I was,” Bulma said.
“Well, no need to feel bad. I’ll let you know when we’re taking off,” Lyri said. She headed to the cockpit and ran into Vegeta on the way. “Should I get us off this mud ball?”
“No. We’ll leave in the morning,” he told her. He went into his room. Lyri stood there awkwardly. She had given her room to Bulma and had nowhere to go for the night. She set her bag down outside the cockpit and walked outside the ship. She leaned against the ship and stared up at the night sky. Her eyes fell on the bright red ‘star’ in the sky. Their home. It was pretty in the night sky.
“Stop staring at the damn sky and get in here!” Vegeta snapped at her from inside the ship.
Lyri went inside. “Yes?”
He walked away and she followed him. He led her to his room. “What the hell were you doing?” he asked when the door closed.
“I wasn’t doing anything. Quit being paranoid,” she told him.
“Did you forget you were to report here?” Vegeta asked.
She had. “Yes, I did,” she admitted, “I’m sorry.”
Vegeta looked annoyed. “Well, you’re here now. I guess that’s all that matters,” he told her, “You will be staying here with me. To make it believable.”
“Ok,” Lyri said.
“And you will need to move into my personal quarters when we return to Planet Vegeta,” he added.
She nodded.
Both stood there awkwardly before Vegeta took off his armor and training suit and got in bed.
Lyri’s face flushed red and she grabbed her bag, retreating to the bathroom. She gave herself a few minutes to get over seeing her prince in just his underwear. She changed into another cropped shirt and shorts and walked back out to the room. Vegeta had turned out the lights, so Lyri quietly got into bed and laid facing away from him. She only lay there for a few minutes before she was tugged back.
“Wha...?”
“Shut up and go to sleep,” Vegeta muttered as he wrapped his arm around her.
Lyri laid there for a bit, listening to Vegeta’s breathing and eventually fell asleep in his arms.
