'Tyson threw me for a loop today, going to school early.' Zeo's body swayed back and forth as he played a score with the rest of the orchestra class.
Their teacher wrote it. He'd someday like to become famous for his musical works; guess that's why he's chosen to teach. Their talent will play, and he will gain recognition. It could happen, if Misa Ota would stop hitting the sharps at the wrong time. But, today, it seems that Zeo is the one not completely focused on the music. At least they're just doing drills, so it's not as if his off timing is a big deal, for now.
'Stupid lessons. Who knows what other new things he's gonna get up to today, while I'm stuck here.' Silently growling out his frustration with what looked like a grin to the outside world, Zeo lowered his violin.
Mr. Tanaka frowned. "Zeo? What's gotten into you?"
Zeo frowned. 'Guess he singled me out. I wonder if I could feign illness?'
"Zeo?" He asked again when noticing he'd received no response.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Just distracted." He replied. 'Damned honesty.' He mentally face-palmed.
"Well, join us in class now, we need you for the show."
'I'm the star pupil, I get it. But when do I get to have a life?' he nods to assure the teacher that he'll focus.
As class truly came underway, Zeo closed his eyes, imagined Tyson asked around for him, then showed up at rehearsal, just to listen to him practice. And when opening day arrives, he'd wish him luck. He'd give him flowers, best of all a kiss. In front of every curious eye wondering who the cute guy is. Zeo grinned. The kiss will let them know, Tyson is taken- no, better than taken. They'll know Tyson has given himself to someone. And that someone is Zeo Zagart.
"Huh?" He opened his eyes when a hand roughly came to rest on his shoulder.
"Zeo, I can understand teenaged hormones, but, that should be taken care of before the rest of the class sees."
Zeo looked to where his teacher had glanced. His cheeks turned red. He apologized, quietly excusing himself to use the bathroom.
...
Zeo left the stall once he brought himself some much needed relief. If nothing else, this humiliation will keep him from daydreaming about Tyson Granger again. He's pretty sure his focus is at a good pause for the time being. Washing his hands, he then splashed water over his face to calm himself down further.
'At least no one else saw.' After checking his face in the mirror for any lingering traces of embarrassment, Zeo grabbed a sheet of napkin to dry his hands. Music. Focus on music. Zagart coached himself with these words as he made his way back to the auditorium.
10:43 pm.
Zeo Zagart slipped into Tyson's neighborhood. It's nothing new. He's done this quite a few times. He missed him. His father was going on and on over dinner, and all the blue haired teen could think about was how his love had been ditched by his rude friends, and probably spent the afternoon alone at home. He'd never have done anything like that to Tyson. He'd wait for him outside of the school building. He'd wait no matter how long it took for him to come out! Which is why he's here now. To be sure that his native beauty isn't silently crying his eyes out because of his miserable friends. And, he wanted to get another photo of his sleep face.
He's heard countless times how it must be nice to be rich. Ha! The whisperers at school have no idea. He can get the latest equipment with a simple asking or wave of his black card. So, without a flash to give him away, he snapped a photo of the lump of Tyson slumbering in his bed. He looks so peaceful. Zeo hugged the phone to his chest before stuffing it into his pocket. Lowering himself off of the large flower pot, that he'd stuffed under the window to see inside, to the loose soil below, he was about to make his retreat when a low growl caught his ear.
'Grrr? What is that? A wild dog?!' He swallowed a lump rising in his throat. The last thing he needs is to be mauled by some rabies-ridden mutt. 'It could just be a regular stray... If I get bitten, I could knock on the door and ask for help to treat it. Maybe Tyson would even stay with me at the hospital, if it was serious enough.' The dog's sudden bark scared him enough to cause a small jump. 'Do you hear yourself? You're gonna get bit by a weird dog, just to be close to Tyson! Run, you boob!'
Left or right? Picking right, he hauled off like a missile was pre-destined to land in that very spot, and if he didn't move he'd be the first to become a splat on the soil. The aggressive hound gave chase! Zeo urged his legs to move faster, but he was quickly losing breath. He turned left at the corner of the Granger home, then ran a short length of the side of the house before taking another left, running the full length of the house once again. The dark could have worked to his advantage against a human, the moon less night perfect for cover in a shadow of any kind, but that was not the case with the more advanced species who only need to follow their nose. So, on Zeo ran. Around and around.
"Heel! Sit!" He called over his shoulder with a huff and puff of breath between each word. Groping his pockets was where the mistake was made; with a yelp, he hit the grass! He's a goner for sure! "Aaahh!" He rolled onto his back, shielding the vitals of his neck with his arms.
But a sudden squeak of a whistle sounded, backing off the inevitable before it made contact. Scared out of his wits, breathing heavy, he slowly lowered his arms, and opened his fear closed eyes. Zeo could have sobbed, in fact, silently he did. He's never run so hard. He should really workout more during gym class.
Zeo crawled along on his front, intending to make it to the front gate, to save face. Though not from the shame of running from a vicious dog, but to save face from being discovered by the person who'd whistled to the dangerous mutt. There was no way it was just some lucky sound of the city, it was a human. And a young one at that. If he's caught… how the hell will he explain his being at the old dojo home? Lessons? At this hour! Ha!
He can hear approaching foot steps behind him, and in a panic he scrambled to his feet to better hurry away.
"Who's there? Show yourself!" came Tyson Granger's voice.
Zeo figured if Tyson had to ask after his, or anyone's, identity than it's more than likely he can't really see him. With that as the fuel of his engine he bolted.
"Come back here, you!" Called the homeowner. "Sick 'em, Dragoon!"
"No! No!" Zeo spun around, his arms outstretched to ward off round 2 of being pounced on by the large multicolored in brown Kai Ken.
Recognition of the voice that's been newly acquired in his acquaintances reel, Tyson had to be sure. He'd know right away, but the porch lights are on the outside of the stone gate wall. And the house is too far back to show him exactly whom he's speaking to. "Zeo?"
'Rats! The jig is up... You know what he's gonna ask you, think faster!' His shoulders slum down. "Tyson? Then this is your house?"
"Yeah. So, what are you doing here?" He crossed his arms.
Scratching the back of his head, Zeo chuckled innocently. "What a weird coincidence, I had no idea. I usually take walks at night, and come by this neighborhood."
"Kinda late." Comments the homeowner; he didn't have to check his watch, he knows what time it is.
"I know. I like these old Sukiya-Zukuri, and I kinda get a kick out making my father worry... You know how it is?"
"Not really, but kinda.. I mean," he lightly laughed. "I've never wanted to bug my parents, but I have wanted to bug my grampa."
"Yeah!" Good! Good, he understands.
"But that doesn't explain why you're in my yard."
The Kai-Ken growled causing Zeo to take a step back.
"Dragoon." Came a stern warning. Having silenced the dog, he then looked back at Zeo. "Well?"
"All the times I've passed by this house, I've never heard a dog before," Zeo felt his voice faltering. 'No. Go with it. It could work.' He pressed on. "So I thought a stray snuck into this person's yard, and I wanted to let it out. When I didn't see it at the front gate, I went around back and he started chasing me." He laughed nervously. "He might have killed me, if you didn't come along."
"Yeah, right. It's so weird, Dragoon is usually embarrassingly friendly." He pet the dog's head. "Maybe he stepped on a thorn."
"Dragoon? Like the Bitbeast?" He was proud of himself for seamlessly changing subjects.
"Yup!" Tyson grinned brightly enough to make the moon give a nod. "You know beyblade?"
"I used to play it all the time as a kid!" He took a step closer, but backed up again when Dragoon growled low in his throat.
"I said cut it out; go on, go to your dog house." He gave the dog a shove with his hip until it reluctantly went away. "Sorry."
"When did you get a dog?"
"When I was seven. That's why I named him Dragoon. Beyblade was so hot back then, to this day I still geek-out a bit." Releasing the question that was asked beneath the question, he added. "Oh, and my parents came by today and brought Dragoon with them. They live in.."
Replying with him internally. 'Kyoto. I know.' Zeo smiled. 'I know everything about you, Tyson.'
"They went back after dinner, but left my buddy back there." Tyson swung his arm out to gesture for the gate exit. "So, which beast did you like? Let me guess, you strike me as a bird type." He tapped the threat-less night prowler on the shoulder. "Do you like Dranzer, like Kai? Or maybe Falborg?"
'I guess he doesn't remember? But, that's okay! We have plenty of time to reminisce once we're a couple.' Thinks Zeo. "Actually, I'm a Cerberus fan."
"Whoa, no kidding? I wouldn't think you'd like a three-headed dog. That's pretty cool." Opening the gate, he walked out with him. "You shouldn't wander around at night so much, it could be dangerous."
"Thanks, I'll remember that. But, I've been doing it for a while, nothing's happened so far."
"You never know."
"Right. ...Good night."
Tyson chuckled at the formality of the posh and rich. "I'll see you tomorrow at school."
"Okay." Waving he starts for home with butterflies and nausea roiling around inside of him. 'That was too close. Stupid dog! How'm I gonna spy on tyson now?' Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he walked along the light lit streets of Satoayama. Thinking about it. It shouldn't be too hard befriending a dog.
It's morning. Zeo Zagart has yet to fully wake up.
"Master, Zeo, your cheek is in the cream." William, the butler, informed the teen with a firm hand landing on his younger boss's shoulder.
"Hmm? Oh, sorry." He grabbed the napkin from his lap and wiped away the mess.
The walk home was slow and thoughtful. Then, once he was back in the house, warm in his bed, he didn't exactly find rest. He began to worry. What if Tyson had been humoring him? What if he didn't buy it that he'd only been trying to help a wandering stray? What if he awoke today to the cops banging on the front door, demanding he come down to the station for questioning? What if Tyson spreads it around school that he's some neighborhood prowling weirdo; that everyone should ignore him but also be cautious because anyone who can sneak around late at night can't be trusted.
'It's not true!' He vehemently declared. Scratching his fingers through his hair as if they were tiny nets used for wrangling nonsense, he calmed himself. The very idea of Tyson being cruel to him was some sort of parasitic bug; it could breed, but it could also be caught. His Tyson wouldn't do that. 'He likes you too much to be that kind of person, Zeo. Calm down.' Just then he noticed his father is staring at him. "What?"
"Excuse me?"
Blushing, Zeo nodded. "I'm sorry. I meant to ask, is something wrong, father?"
"Where were you last night?"
"In bed."
"Don't lie to me. Gilda said you weren't in bed last night."
With a resigned sigh, he replied. "Am I not allowed to take a walk in the garden at my own home?" He throws his hands up. "Suddenly wanting some fresh air is a problem! Am I supposed to be a enslaved inside of the house, just so you know where I am?"
"Stop being dramatic. Simply say you were walking in the garden." The large head of the household stood up when the, guilty for being the cause of their argument, maid held the phone out to him.
Grumbling, Zeo says through his teeth. "I went for a walk in the garden."
"Are you ready for school, sir?" Asked the butler.
Figuring he may as well go; Zeo left the dining room. His father was through with bellowing at him anyway.
...
"Guess it's a good thing I'd brought extra. Didn't you get a chance to eat breakfast, Zeo?" Kenny, his best friend since having previously, and once again living in Tokyo, asked. He had to wonder this as the well-to-do rich boy wolfed down another sweet bread that he'd bought for his lunch later in the day. There goes his snack.
"Sorry. My dad was on my case again, it spoiled my appetite." He explained. 'I mostly slept on my breakfast.' Admitting that part only to himself. "I'll pay you back. I can buy you 2 new ones before lunch." He offered.
"That's okay, I have carrot sticks." He waved it off. "So, what are you doing this weekend? Wanna go up to the mountains for a hike with me and my family?"
'Do I have to?' Smiling he nods. "Sounds great! Beats hanging around here doing nothing."
"My thoughts exactly. The closer we get to summer, the more restless I become." He adjusts his oversized glasses. "It's gonna be awful without school. That's why my dad planned these educational field trips."
"So we're not just having fun?"
Snickering as though he had a naughty magazine, Kenny says. "It'll be incredibly fun," cupping his hand to the side of his mouth, he informed his downtrodden friend. "I've compiled a list of bug and plant life native to that area. We're gonna play Bingo."
"Ahaha," came a dry laugh. "You're a cool one, Kenny."
Beaming, the studious teen hummed with joy. "I know. I almost want school to get on break... almost." Nothing beats the real thing. To Kenny.
Zeo checked the clock, free period was almost over; Tyson will be passing through the halls right now to get to class. Tyson and his friends always spend free period hanging around outside by the track field, he and Kenny go to the library and read while talking. When your chat buddy is Kenny Saien it's easy to cover a chapter or two- he's a talker, but mostly it's stuff the person he's talking to doesn't need to respond. The blue-haired, less study oriented though no less smart, Zeo wondered what cool guys like Tyson talk about with his friends? Probably something like hanging at the beach, cars they're getting, people they're into- scratch that, that's the last thing he wants to think about. He'd gone down that worm hole once before when he'd thought Tyson was into Max. But, sofar as he knows from spying on the upbeat dream-boat, they're just friends.
"Ow!" He yelped when popping his foot into the leg of the table after he tried to take a step.
"You alright?"
"Of course, it's more of a reflex sound than a pain."
"Oh. Ha, maybe it's a bad omen,"
"An omen?"
They made their way to the check-out counter, getting their books filed as 'borrowed' before exiting the library. Just in time. The smile on Zeo's face burst brightly, then he schooled it away. What a mistake that would be, if he was seen by Tyson looking at him in that way. A way he can only do so in private.
'Notice me first... Notice me first...' He begged. Slowing his pace, he fell a little behind Kenny but not enough to walk along side Tyson and his entourage.
"Heeey!" Tyson's voice shot forward.
Heart embraced, Zeo was about to turn around and greet his friend in return, when said male shot by in a blur to jump on Kenny. To place a companionable arm around Kenny. Who the hell is Kenny to him? Since when?!
"Heya, Chief."
"Hi, Tyson."
"What have you been up to," he asked in a tone much too chummy for the lurking Zagart's liking. "besides leaving a deeper divot in your favorite library chair with those learning buns-of-steel of your's?"
Kenny laughed. "Nothing much; I'm planning a trip with my family on break. Zeo's coming along, you know him."
"We've met." Looking over his shoulder to said person, he grinned, then released Kenny to accost Zeo. "Hi. Find anymore Pound Puppies since last night?"
"Oh, aha ha ha haha.. aha.." Embarrassed, he lowered his head.
"Relax, Ze', I'm just teasing. I think it was really cool of you to be so considerate."
'He called me Ze'.' Was it possible to have a heart attack from joy? If not, he's about to become the first. And Tyson is touching him! What kind of magical morning has he awoke to? He mouthed "ow" after pinching his arm.
"What are you doing for break, Tyson?" Zeo asked.
"Dunno, probably beach it."
"I'm not going to the beach," Kai says while passing them by to enter his classroom.
"He says that every year, and every year he goes." Explained the spontaneous activity wrangler.
"I could go with you!" He piped up, Zeo's voice was a bit too eager, but what could he do. The opportunity was there, it needed to be seized.
"Hmm? I thought you were going with Kenny?"
Kenny, who can't hear a thing due to the noise accumulating in the hall, blissfully continued to class. Zeo shrugged it off. "He'll be fine. Besides, he's really planned this whole educational scavenger hunt. It's gonna be so boring."
"Yikes. I feel your pain, but, won't it suck blowing off the Chief? He is your friend."
"He'll understand, really. Besides, he's my friend and he'd want me to have fun." Hurriedly he added. "Even if it's not with him."
"That's cool. Come along then."
"Okay. Thanks."
"Sure." Looking on ahead to where Max is, he called out. "Guys, wait up!"
'Yes! Yes! Are you kidding me?!' He seriously could cry. How was this possible? The beach. With Tyson.
His imagination took him away right then, his movement was on auto-pilot to navigate the crowded hall. Tyson, at the beach. His hair wet with water and sweat, clinging to his face and body. His muscular, sporty body glistening in the sunlight. Water games, he'd be all over him: pushing him into the salty sea, being held in place when they wave jump, borrowing his used towel.
"Hey, space cadet, come back to solid ground." Kenny said when his back was slammed into by his friend. "What are you thinking about so hard?"
"Huh?" Blinking, he coughed. "Kenny, would it be okay if I didn't go on your family on the trip? I kinda remembered something I'm supposed to do. And," Boy lying was becoming easier! He doesn't know how it happened. One minute he was honest, the next he's telling people the sky is the color of a Giraffe and he can prove it.
"Um, sure, not a problem. But, what's changed?"
"Music class. I sometimes forget about things we have to do."
"Oh. That's a shame. You'd really of loved it."
"I'm sure I would. Sorry again."
Kenny gave him an empathetic squeeze on his arm. "Those two should just get a room already," he smiled fondly. Nodding to what he's talking about, Zeo turned his head and looked.
At first he saw nothing, then it came in. Tyson Granger... talking to Rei Kon.
Don't panic. "What do you mean? I didn't know Tyson and Rei were close." He can't take his eyes off the scene of the pair of them laughing, and throwing punches at each other while they talked. How long has this deceitful nonsense been going on? Zeo's eyes slit.
"Umm, hmm, for a while Rei lived at Tyson's house- when he first moved here from China." He gripped his chin thoughtfully. "It was like some sort of program I think. I'm not entirely sure, but in all the times I've tutored Tyson, Rei was there."
'That explains how he and Kenny are so close... So Rei used to live with Tyson, huh?' Closing his eyes to close away the imagery of the pair from his mind, he turned down the hall for his class. 'I think I'd better find out more about this.' He said good bye to his friend who'd said the same to him initially as he went on to his class.
That's two animals he now has to deal with.
