Help or hurt:
"Rei Kon." Mrs. Takatori snagged the teen by his shirt. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Uumm?" Rei had obviously forgotten about his detention and was already on his way out the door with Max, who was standing at the entrance/exit waiting for him to come along.
"You have detention today, remember?"
"Yes, Ma'am." He gave Max a pleading look across the hall, but all he received is a shrug.
Max needed to get home.
With a defeated sigh, Rei re-adjusted his backpack strap and followed the teacher back to her classroom. This was not going to be his year, he could tell. Not only was he now being picked on by every kid that could walk for that Bat thing on the website, but now he was going to have to walk home and risk running into the awaiting Tala and Bryan or worse - HIM.
Heading up the stairwell, Mrs. Takatori spoke about something he wasn't listening to. He could only think of what waited for him when he was let out of school. Once they reached the room, the teacher gave him a little shove toward his desk. "Sit. Put your head down."
"Yes, Ma'am." Taking his usual seat in that class, Rei put his head down, though he turned it a bit so that he could look out the window.
The clouds were thick, growing thicker. It didn't look like rain but it seemed as though something bad was about to happen. Rei couldn't imagine why life was being so cruel to him. He just couldn't.
"You know why, Rei..." It was Garland again.
Rei turned his head, seeing the image of his tormentor, seated in an un-occupied desk. He had on the school's uniform; a smile on his face that screamed trouble.
"Garland." Rei spoke out loud without meaning to.
"Mr. Kon! Head down!" The teacher shouts.
"Yes, Mrs. Takatori." He put his head back down, but he couldn't stop staring at the desk.
"Hahahaha, one... two... Slugger's coming for you." Garland taunted.
'Ignore it, ignore it...' Rei struggle to do so. He's not really there. He's only in your mind. Turning so that his vision could only stare at the cold, polished wooden desk beneath him.
"Three... four... five... Slugger takes your lives."
Stop! Stop! The Chinese teen bit into his tongue until he tasted blood.
"Six... seven... pray you're going to heaven." Garland sounded closer, like he had switched desks. "Eight, nine, ten... Close your eyes, it's the end." After that, he disappeared with a laugh.
He could now hear kids screaming, talking and laughing as they made their way away from school. He wished he was out there with them, instead of waiting for doom, as Garland predicted. Lil' Slugger's bat to his head. His foot began to swing, slowly and lazily, back and forth under the desk. Scraping against the floor, creating a low scuffling sound. The longer Rei's sneaker brushed against the floor, the deeper and louder the sound became until it sounded nothing like his own.
'He's gonna get me... He's gonna get me...!'
He could feel himself cornered. He could feel himself trapped. He heard the skate wheels on the concrete. Slugger is here! Slugger is going to...!
He jumped up from his thoughts. The bell had rang apparently twice now; the teacher was gone. She wouldn't leave without telling him he could go, would she? But the blinds were down and the hall lights were nearly all turned out on this floor.
How long had he been sitting there? Looking at the clock, his eyes nearly bugged out of his head as he saw that it was nearly a quarter to Five.
Yanking his backpack on, Rei leapt up from the desk and crossed the room in a hurry. He had to get home. He had to get off the streets before it got any later. And since he had missed the late bus, he was in for a long walk. But, it wouldn't be too long, if he could run fast enough.
Hurrying down the halls and out the corridors, Rei managed to get outside without any hassles or weird things going on. He was glad for that. Now to make it home. Beginning to run at a full sprint, he jumped in pure terror when someone stepped out in front of him.
Holding a hand over his slow-motion exploding heart, Rei sighed from relief. "Kai, what are you doing here?"
"I've been watching you," he replied simply. "I didn't see you come out, so I decided to wait for you. We can walk together."
"I love you." He meant that as a 'thank you', not in the real way, putting on a smile afterwards.
Kai smirked at him, and replied. "You're welcome." Turning away from the Raven-haired newbie, Kai began to walk in the direction he figured Rei lived at, since he said nothing and followed him. They walked along quietly; Rei glanced at Kai every once in a while, but then he turned his gaze back down.
"Um, thank you, really, for walking me home."
"It's not a problem."
"I was supposed to go with Max, but I had detention."
"Really, it isn't a problem." The Russian shrugged. "Besides, I saw how freaked out you were before. When you saw that website with you on it."
Rei lowered his head, a frown coming across his face. "So you saw that, huh?"
"Yeah, but any idiot could see that those pictures were clearly edited." He paused in his steps, making Rei do the same by placing a hand on his shoulder. "Those guys were just messing with you because you let yourself become a target, by showing that you cared."
"I kinda did, didn't I?" Looking Kai in the eye, his frown deepened. "What your saying, does it go for other cases?"
"Other cases like what?" He started to walk again.
"Say someone..." He trailed off. He shouldn't be telling Kai. He shouldn't be telling anyone! What happened in the past should stay there. He was the only one dredging it up. And if the school board knew, they weren't saying anything about it.
"Rei?" Kai tried to get him to speak.
He considered telling him. He really did. However, at the last minute he decided against it. "It's nothing, honest. I was just bringing up old stuff."
"One... Two..." He heard Garland in his ears.
"Can we please hurry?" Asks the frightened teen. "My house is aways from here, if you don't mind walking all that way?"
"No." But he continued to give Rei long sideways glances. Kai knows how stressful it is to hide something from one's past. But it's usually not so horrible that it can't be repaired. He also knew that it was something that caused Rei to become paranoid of Lil' Slugger. And if he kept that up... He'd be doomed.
#
The next day dragged on as if it was a physical person, with large bolders attached to their ankles. Rei was ready to beat his head into the wall when the teacher began to speak.
"Class, do to your permission slips it appears that some of you either didn't get them signed." She casts her eyes over the certain people to whom she was speaking. "Or you never showed them to your parents at all." Again, she looked at the guilty culprits. "But lucky for you," her hands tore away at the slips. "I don't care."
Walking toward the exit, Mrs. Takatori stood aside, and with gesturing hand, she commands. "Line up. Single file."
Murmurs went up in the room. Everyone was wondering what this little assignment was? And, why it would be going on after school hours? The class was over in what couldn't be more than five minutes.
"I told you about the 'Project Fear' we are going to be trying out. I wanna see how scared you can become." She watched the class walking out into the hallway as she spoke.
"Fear?" Max turned stark white from those words.
Rei was wondering what the woman had planned? It made no sense. What kind of outcome was she striving for? Tears? Humiliation?
When the class made it outside of the building, they followed the teacher towards the back fence. Beyond the barrier was a thick forest. One could only guess what would go on in a forest late in the day. Bandits? Lunatics? Kids with baseball bats... Kon could only imagine. Oh why did the sky have to be so dark this morning and afternoon?! If you're not going to rain - fuck off gloom-clouds!
Deeper and farther out the students shuffled behind their teacher, whose sanity was questionable. Mrs. Takatori stopped walking suddenly and turned around. A wide grin spread across her face. "Here are the rules..."
Most of the class was ready for whatever it was to be asked of them. Their sick minds churned a mile a minute about how naturally they scare their peers day-to-day, so what can they do unfiltered? Others, the weak, thought about what those harmful students would do to them - unfiltered. While other kids like, Max and Rei were scared of what was about to happen internally.
"The only rules are that you walk, in a circle. Go down a mile then turn off in a circle and come back. As you are doing this, think of something you've done that's BAAAD..."
The the class "oooh'd" and "awesome'd", thinking that "bad" meant breaking some rule of their house or something lame they did in school that they shouldn't have. But Rei knew what she meant. This sick little test was to play on people's fear of Lil' Slugger.
His eyes narrowed. He didn't even wanna know why a teacher would make up sick things like this for their students to do? Did she think it would be funny if someone actually got hurt? Or was she just looking for a good laugh at which ever kid cracked first? He wasn't sure, but he was going to find out. Raising his hand, he spoke when her serpent eyes dragged over to him.
"Yes, Rei?"
"Mrs. Takatori? What does this have to do with history?"
A smile curled upon her evil lips. "Why everything, dear boy." She laughed to herself. "Urban legends go back for thousands of years in history, some examples are: Bloody Mary, a woman who kills if you say her name so many times into a mirror. But every time you hear this legend, the number changes, the actions. Another fine example, that childish thing with Pop Rocks. Clearly no one has ever died by that. Even the one with the babysitter and the man who broke in."
"I loved that one!" A girl with navey blue haired piped up.
"Of course you do Mariam. Be quiet." Looking back at Rei she ended with. "And now our town with its own legend of a boy with a golden bat, who slugs you because he knows what you're thinking. Impossible. And with this test, it will go proven as a hoax." A sneer came across her face as she said. "Start walking. And as you walk, think about what you've done, and look between the trees. We'll soon see our Little Slugger. Or not..."
"But what if we do, and someone gets hurt?" Rei hated to sound as if he's whining, but his tone betrayed him as it failed at anger.
"Really Rei, Tsukiko Sagi was questioned saying she was a victim, however, an eyewitness said that they saw no one. The young lady was alone, and hurt herself."
Rei couldn't argue any further.
"Now move."
Lowering his head, he followed slowly after the class as they walked the mile. Max clung to his arm for safety, he was glad he had someone with him through this.
As they walked the large group somehow managed to dwindle. Rei suddenly saw fewer people passing by him. It became so sparse that he was eventually walking in the forest alone. Where had Max gone? And when? He prayed he wasn't alone. Hunted for another person as the voice snuck in. Luckily, each time he really got worked up, another peer would appear behind him, and quietly walk by. He soon began to notice that not a lot of them were doing the assignment, in fact. They were doing their own things all together.
Most kids just talked - if they were in a small group. Other kids pulled out hidden ipods and turned on some music. But Rei couldn't help but comply to what his teacher had ordered them to do. He had no say in the matter. It came at him on its own.
"He's gonna get me." He muttered.
Why did Max ditch him? It must have happened when he was deep in thought and heard someone go by that sounded like Tyson. Now he's alone. All alone. Walking slowly, hopefully slowly enough for someone to catch up to him. But somehow it seemed like everyone has disappeared. He tended to think so hard that time passed like water through parted fingers. He hated to see if the class was gone already.
"Rei!"
Turning around, he saw Max running over to him, his eyes huge with fear. "Max? What's the matter?" He looked him over for injuries, but found none. "Did someone hurt you?"
"No, it's Kai!"
"Kai?!"
While Max caught his breath a million things rushed through Rei's mind. He hadn't even seen Kai in school today, he just assumed he was out sick. "Max, please, what happened to Kai?"
"It's Lil' Slugger,"
"What?" Rei turned away ready to run and find him. "Well where is he? Which way did he go?"
"No, it happened last night!"
"Last night!?" Rei's mind was spinning.
He was just with Kai yesterday evening, how could he have been hurt? Unless it happened when Kai was going back home. So Lil' Slugger was following him, and he took his actions out on Kai.
"Wh-... is he all right?"
"Tyson told me he's in the hospital, he's unconscious now, but the doctor said he should be fine."
"Tyson? How does he know all this?"
"It was in the news. I was talking to him, the two of us are warning everyone to leave the woods and go home. We can't even find the teacher."
Rei's pulse shot up when he heard that.
"We can't find her anywhere."
"I'll help you. I'll tell as many people as I can."
Max smiled a thanks. He then rushed off to tell anyone else he found. Doubling-back, Rei ran through the woods. All while he ran, his nerves were acting up on him. 'What if the teachers and Principal do know?! Would they do this to me on purpose? Was it planned from the start?'
Garland's little nursery rhyme rang through his head as he hurried around the trees. He had to find someone - anyone. Glancing left, he thought he saw a shadow moving at the far end of a cleared row of trees. Shaking away the image, he pressed on. 'Come oooon, someone - anyone... Don't leave me alone.' He passed by tree after tree but found no one. He really is alone.
A twig snapped in the distance. 'What was that?!' His heart was pounding in his ears, he didn't want to freeze but his legs refused to work anymore. 'No... no...' He's panting harder more rapidly. Dropping to his knees, he covered his ears with his hands. 'Please no!' He shouted out loud. "Don't!"
"Aahahaha, why am I not surprised to see Kon frozen in terror like a child." The red head snickered. Reaching down, he yanked Rei to his feet.
Rei screamed again, then opened his eyes in hope to at least ward off the dangerous tween, but he was shocked to find Tala standing before him, holding his arm in the air by the elbow. Yanking himself free, he then lunged at him! Except, it wasn't out of anger. He hugged him.
"I'm so glad to see someone." He murmured. "We have to get out of here. Lil' Slugger's in the woods - I saw him."
"Bullshit, Rei," he shoved the pest away. "You heard what Mrs. Takatori said, there's no such thing. He's an Urban Legend."
"No, he's not. He got Kai."
"Who got Kai?" Bryan asked, bringing up the rear.
Moving past Tala, he grabbed Bryan's shirt. "We have to get out of the woods, Mrs. Takatori left us out here; we're gonna be killed!"
Bryan and Tala laughed. "Yeah right." The gray haired teen spoke. "Because we all have so many ssssiiiins, and so much paranoia." Leaning over he met Rei's eyes, a sneer on his face, he asked. "What did you do that you're so scared, Rei? Hmm? You rape somebody?"
"No."
"Maybe he's a thief?" Tala chimed in.
"Guys don't start this, we have to leave!"
"Tch. Come on, Tala, let's leave Rei to his appointment." Laughing, he walked away.
Tala remained with him.
"Please, if you care about Kai at all, you'll get out of here."
"Listen, Rei, I have no sins. I do nothing wrong - well - except maybe pick on you and a bunch of other losers in scho-" He turned his head and froze, his words cutting in abrupt halt.
"What?" Rei looked to where Tala's gaze had fallen. He saw no one, but he heard something. A low scraping sound. "Tala, come on let's go!" He grabbed his arm and pulled at him. "Tala! Come on!" Looking around he tried to spot Bryan, but he was gone. "Bryan! Bryan, help!"
Tala may be an ass. But he's no one to condem anybody. It's not his place. Jerking him by the arm as forcefully as he can; Rei saw Tala's eyes widening. He looked mystified then terrified. Without warning Tala jerked his head sharply to the left and collapsed. Falling backward he was caught by the Chinese teen.
How could Lil' Slugger get someone without being seen!? Holding the convulsing bully on his lap, Rei looked from left to right for help, but no one was around. "We have to go." He set Tala at his side; he kept his eyes peeled as he draped the now stilled unconscious antagonist's arms over his shoulders. He then hoisted him up so that he's draped over him piggyback style. "I'll come back for the others."
Luckily Tala was as light as he looked. So much so that Rei could sprint easily with him on his back. "I'll put you down at the school, then call the hospital." Being careful he cut through the trees, though his eyes kept glancing between the emptiness spaced between the trees.
A black shadow passed quickly by, giving him more speed to press on. Yes! There's light at the exit! Just as he broke through the forest, he knocked a kid over along with himself and Tala. "Ah!"
"Ow!" The guy voiced.
He knew him, from math class. "Zeo!"
"Rei, Rrrr, what are you running for? What are you doing in there?" He questioned; seeing Tala, he figured he's either drunk or passed out, he got up on his feet.
"Can you take him? I have to go back and warn the others."
"Yeah... but warn them of what?" He reached out for the red head. "What are you guys doing in there?"
"I can't explain that now, but find a phone and call the police. Tell them it's Lil' Slugger." He dashed back into the woods to find his other classmates.
Zeo looked confused, but did as he was asked by taking Tala back to the building.
Rei hurried between the trees, cutting his arm as he passed through the branches too close to avoid being scraped. 'I have to hurry before it gets too late.'
"One, two... Slugger's coming for you."
Now was not the time to start hearing things. He had to stay focused. "Haaa!" He banged into something, it was Garland! He was looking down at him and grinning madly. "Garland, I'm... I'm sorry."
"Too late, Rei. Three, four, five.."
"Shut up!" He covered his ears, but not in time to miss that sound. That damned scraping of a bat. The unusual sound of skates on dirt and leaves. The bat popping against the trees as he came. He was coming, he would get him. Closer. Closer.
Standing, Rei ran as fast as he could. He may not be able to save the others, but he could at least save himself. For all he knows, the rest of his class has already cleared out.
"That's right wannabe! Run!"
Rei was breathing too hard for comfort. He staggered a couple of times, but he saved himself. Stopping against a tree, he let out rapid breaths. He couldn't do it anymore. He had to face what he did. He has to tell before...
"I did it! I'm sorry, Garland! I'm sorry I... killed you..." Turning around, he tried to run again, but just as he came to the clearing of the trees, he saw him, standing there in the light of the exit. A smile graced his lips. There was a sinister look about him, even with his eyes hidden by the bill of his ballcap. Slugger raised his bat into the air….
WHACK!
Rei felt the hard, skull-splitting, impact of the bat. But he blacked out long before his face brushed sharply against the trees that encircled him. And he...
THE END
….
Police Report: Rei Kon was found guilty by the police in the next town, for the death of Garland Seibolt. His family forced him to run. Rei did eventually recover from the attack. He was arrested and sent to juvenile hall. He's also under the care of a psychiatrist to help with his mental state as he had shouted several times when alert, that the assailant was going to get him.
Half a year later, he recovered, but never forgot the lesson learned from Lil' Slugger's assault.
Police questioned Kai Hiwatari and Tala Ivannov once they recovered. What had they done to get attacked? But they couldn't remember anything beyond seeing the bat before it struck them.
He's still out there... So, what's eating you?
