Part 31
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the Gundam boys or their world, I just like to imagine them in my own little world (which is totally of my making). No profits (as in no money made by me) are made from this story, just gratuitous pleasure.

A/N: So sorry it’s been so long since I have updated. I have not forgotten about this story, it is always lurking in the back of my mind, it just isn’t always easy to get to going in the direction that I would like it to go. Lately life seems to have gotten in the way of my writing, but I hope to change that. And the wild plot bunnies that just don’t want to stay where I want them to. They always seem to be dashing off to parts unknown. But I am still trying. There are perhaps two chapters left to this little saga and I will do my best to get them out in a timely manner. Please bear with me and don’t forget about me. All of my thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read this, and many more thanks to everyone who has taken the time to let me know what they about it.
Feedback is appreciated. I enjoy hearing from all of my readers. That you take the time to read is great, that you take the time to write is awesome. You are what makes writing worth while. I hope that you enjoy reading it and I look forward to your comments, so please review, it makes me so happy.
My sincere thanks to the following:
Writer4ever: Much as I would love to do a sequel, I have to get this one done first. But thanks for thinking it deserves another part.
Pikeebo: Yeah, I’m still alive, and the story will continue. I will finish, I promise, and I will try not to take so long before updating again. Thanks for thinking about me.

Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…
“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”
Part 31
Agents Green and White exchanged looks, wondering what they had gotten themselves into with this special assignment, but after their dressing down by Simon earlier, they decided to suck it up and make the best of it. After all, it was only two days. This silent communication between the partners took place in a single glance. Agent White sighed again and picked up the map. Best to start planning where they would stop for the night.
“Lily, what’s the biggest town that’s about 250 miles from where we are now? Is there something that sounds decent sized?” Agent Green asked.
“There’s one that’s about 280 miles or so. It looks like it’s pretty sizable, according to the map anyway,” replied Agent White.
“We’ll plan on stopping there, then. Hopefully they will have a good hotel and some decent restaurants,” said Agent Green. “How much further until our final destination?”
“At the rate we’re traveling it will most likely only be another day,” answered Agent White. “It all depends on how late of a start we get tomorrow and how long we drive tonight, of course.”
Agent Green only nodded, and the two agents fell silent once more.
Heero, pinned down by the sleeping Duo, nodded to himself. He hoped that it wouldn’t take any longer than the two days, because cute as Duo was, having him sleeping sprawled across one’s lap was a bit much. Heero was sure that he was losing feeling in his legs, but he was loath to move Duo and risk waking him again. A sleeping Duo was a quiet Duo, and a quiet Duo made for a peaceful ride. Unfortunately, fate was not smiling on the car that afternoon.
Duo woke up after about an hour and he was bored. He wanted to stop, but there were no convenient rest stops close at hand, nor any signs of human habitation anywhere. All that could be seen was miles and miles of nothing, and the road they were on ran straight through it.
Therefore, it fell to Heero to entertain him until they could stop. Unfortunately the best way to entertain Duo was something Heero refused to do with an audience. But Duo was feeling cuddly, as well as bored. And cuddling was leading to wandering, groping hands. When Heero fended him off as gently as he could, Duo got indignant and pouty.
“Fine,” he finally said in a fit of pique. “If you don’t want me to touch you, I’ll just sit over here.” And he moved as far away from Heero as possible, staring out of his window at the vast expanse of nothingness.
Heero waited for the storm to break, as he was sure it would sooner or later. Duo actually held out for a lot longer that Heero expected before he started to nag.
“Heero, when are we going to be there?” he asked.
“Not for a while,” replied Heero.
“Why do we have to go this way? There is nothing out there for miles,” Duo whined.
“I didn’t pick the route,” said Heero.
“Why not? I thought you were in charge of this expedition. You should have picked the route,” Duo retorted.
“I didn’t pick it because I don’t know what our destination is,” Heero told him.
“You don’t even know where we are going?” demanded Duo. “Why not?”
“Because I trust Simon,” Heero said with a shrug.
“Yeah, but you could have asked him and planned a better route then this,” snapped Duo.
“The agents that Simon assigned know where we are going and planned the best and quickest route, I’m sure,” Heero told him.
“So you are trusting two complete strangers with our lives. How do you even know that we will get there at all?” asked Duo, a slight edge to his voice.
“Because I trust Simon,” Heero said again.
“Yeah, well, you should still know these things,” Duo retorted. “I would if I was in charge of things.”
“Well, you’re not, and I guess I’m a bit more trusting than you are, then,” Heero replied.
“Are you saying that I don’t trust Simon?” Duo almost yelled.
“No. I’m saying that your training has made you more suspicious of things than me,” said Heero.
“You mean paranoid, don’t you?” asked Duo, a touch of bitterness in his voice.
“No. You are not paranoid. You just question everything more that I do,” replied Heero.
“Paranoid,” spat Duo.
“However you see it,” Heero shrugged.
“So, when are we going to get there?” asked Duo, returning to his initial question.
“Get where?” asked Heero, blandly.
“To where ever we are going tonight,” Duo snapped. “Is that so hard to figure out?”
“It was a bit vague,” replied Heero.
“It wasn’t vague,” responded Duo. “You are just being an ass again.”
“No. You’re just not always clear in what you are asking,” said Heero, a smirk on his face.
“You purposely misunderstand me,” snapped Duo. “And you never answered my question.”
“What question?” Heero asked, now thoroughly enjoying himself. Winding Duo up was one of his small pleasures.
“You’re not the least bit funny, Yuy,” Duo retorted. “When are we going to be arriving at whatever place we are going to be stopping for the night? Is that clear enough?”
“I don’t know,” shrugged Heero.
“Aaagh!” yelled Duo. “What do you mean, you don’t know?”
“I’m not driving. You would have to ask the agent who is driving that question,” Heero explained patiently.
Duo closed his eyes, clenching his jaw tightly and took several deep breaths.
“About three hours,” interrupted Agent Green, wanting to head off any more of the wrangling from the back seat. It was starting to set her teeth on edge just a bit.
“Thank you,” snapped Duo. “That was all I wanted to know.”
Heero smirked as Duo sank back into sulky silence. Heero chuckled softly at him. Duo stared out of his window for about half an hour or so before he spoke again.
“Heero, would you please give me another one of those pain killers?” he requested.
“No.” Heero replied.
“What do you mean, no?” asked Duo dangerously, his voice starting to rise once more.
“It’s too soon,” replied Heero.
“Heero Yuy, if you don’t give me one of those fucking pain killers right now, I’m going to kill you and everyone else in this fucking car,” Duo stated.
“Such language, babe, and in front of ladies,” Heero chided.
“I don’t give a flying fuck!” Duo screamed. “Either give me the fucking pills or have that woman stop this fucking car and let me the fuck out!”
“Neither one of those options are viable, babe,” said Heero.
Duo forgot himself completely and launched himself at his infuriating husband, good hand outstretched to grab Heero around the neck. Unfortunately, he misjudged and hit his wounded shoulder on the front seat. Pain lanced through his shoulder and he crumbled into a tearful heap onto Heero's lap. Heero instantly felt bad for all of the teasing that had led Duo to making such a rash move.
Heero was quickly cuddling him close, kissing and petting him, stroking his back and hair, trying to soothe his distressed lover. He murmured softly into Duo's ear, too low for the agents to catch his words, but they seemed to calm him immediately. The two in the back cuddled quietly for some time, much to the relief of the two agents in the front seat. It was about another half hour before Duo spoke again.
“Heero, where are my knives and guns?” he asked.
“In the trunk,” Heero answered, wondering where this tangent was going.
Duo was silent for a few more minutes as he stared out the side window. When he turned back to Heero his face had taken a flat, hard experssion.
“I want them,” he stated abruptly.
“You can’t have them right now. You’ll have to wait until we stop,” Heero replied.
“I want them now,” said Duo in an icy voice.
“Not possible right now,” Heero told him, looking into the cold indigo eyes, trying to fathom what was going through the others head.
“You have no right to keep them from me,” Duo stated. “I need them.”
“No, you don’t,” Heero countered. “Not right at the moment, anyway. I’ll get them for you when we stop.”
“You’d better,” Duo replied flatly. His eyes darted about and he shifted restlessly, but he didn’t say anything else.
Heero took his hand and stroked his thumb across the back of it comfortingly, but didn’t say anything. He could see that Duo was starting to feel confined and hoped that they would be stopping soon, but thought he’d just wait out the building storm. Time to confront it when it hit, if it ever did. It was hard to tell with Duo sometimes, never knowing which way the wind was going to blow.
Up front, the two agents exchanged glances. The disapproval was evident on Agent Green’s face at the thought of Duo being armed, but she would hold her peace for the moment. The long haired assassin was none to stable in her opinion to be trusted with weapons, but as long as they were locked in the trunk of the speeding car, nothing need be said.
Heero relaxed, eyes closed, still holding Duo's hand. He’d be glad to be out of the car, too. It had been a long day. The miles passed quickly as each person sat submerged in their own thoughts.
A short time later Heero felt Duo shift closer to him and he opened his arms to enfold his lover closer to himself. Before too long, Duo was sleeping peaceful once more with his head pillowed on Heero's shoulder. Heero found himself dozing as well.
The slowing of the car brought the two men out of their sleep. Heero awoke instantly, alert to the change in their environment. Duo blinked sleepily, rousing a bit more slowly.
“We’re stopping for the night,” Agent Green informed them. “Do you have any preference of where we stay?”
“Not really,” replied Heero. “Any place will do as long as they have at least queen sized beds.”
“A hot tub,” Duo put in. “I want to soak in some hot water.”
“We’ll need to find a department store,” Heero added. “The two of us need some clothes and a few personal items.”
“There is a store up ahead. Do you want to stop there first?” the agent asked.
“That will be satisfactory,” replied Heero.
“Shopping?” Duo asked, his eyes brightening considerably at the possibility of an impromptu shopping spree.
“We are only stopping long enough to get what we need for tonight and tomorrow,” Heero informed him.
“But Heero…” started Duo, a slight whine to his voice.
“No,” said Heero.
“But…” Duo started, only to be cut off.
“I’ll take you shopping once we reach our final destination. Then you can shop to your heart’s content,” responded Heero gently.
“Alright,” said Duo with a big, theatrical sigh. “I’m going to hold you to that.”
“Hn,” snorted Heero softly.
By then the agent had pulled into the store’s parking lot, found a space and was stopping the car. Duo was quick to spring out the vehicle, happy to be free of the confines of the car. He stretched happily, wincing a bit as his shoulder pulled.
“We won’t be too long. Will you ladies require anything?” asked Heero pointedly, his tone letting them know that their presence wouldn’t be needed for the little shopping expedition.
~*~
The agents settled down to wait after assuring the assassin that they needed nothing.
“It’s hard to believe that those two are from an assassins guild,” said Agent Green as she watched the couple walking towards the store. “And that they were the top assassins.”
“Especially Mrs Yuy. He’s so whiny, I can’t imagine him being any kind of a threat to anyone,” responded Agent White as she plugged in her PDA and started looking for a suitable hotel.
“I’m sure that what Simon told us was the truth as he knows it, but I can’t help but have my doubts,” said Agent Green, watching her partner scan her device.
“Neither of them are very discreet and they both seem just a little bit unstable,” stated Agent White. “Not what I’d picture when I think of an assassin. They really are not making this job easy.”
“Well, we can only to the best we can. We just have to make it through tomorrow,” said Agent Green, setteling back and closing her eyes.
“Hopefully Mrs Yuy will sleep most of the way. Their bickering gets on my nerves just a bit. I just want to reach back there and slap him at times,” said Agent White, rolling here eyes.
“I know,” sympathized Agent Green. “But I wouldn’t recommend it. At least it won’t last forever. Then we can get back to our normal routine. Have you found anything suitable?”
“Thank god,” responded Agent White as she too relaxed and closed her eyes. “Yes. There is a place that should meet our needs about a mile or so down this road.”
“Good,” responded Agent Green.
The two agents enjoyed the soft background music as they waited for their two rather unusual charges to reappear from the store, knowing that all too soon their peace and quiet would be once more torn asunder.
~*~
Duo was in high spirits when they returned to the car. Heero had always been generous as far as spending money on him, and this trip was no exception. Heero was laden with bags. It was amazing how much Duo could spend in such a short time, but it was nothing when compared to the peace and tranquilly it brought to Heero's life. He considered every penny well spent.
Duo now had three new outfits and various accompanying bits of clothing and accessories, as well as hair and body care products. He’d not been able to get as much as he wanted, but he was sure that a major shopping expedition would be forth coming just as soon as they got settled into their new home, as they had left everything they owned behind and now it was little more that ash.
Heero had gotten one new outfit and underclothing and had resisted Duo's insistence that he needed more. He really hated shopping for himself and was happy to put it off for as long as possible.
They had just reached the car with their new possessions when Duo's stomach gurgled loudly.
“Sounds like dinner is the next stop,” quipped Duo brightly.
“Why don’t we see to a room first, so you can clean up and change?” Heero suggested.
“That sounds even better,” Duo agreed, opening his car door and flopping into the back seat.
Heero quickly deposited the packages in the trunk then joined Duo in the back of the car.
“So, where to now, ladies?” Duo asked brightly. “I hope you found a place with a hot tub.”
“There is a very nice hotel just a couple of miles away. It has a good restaurant on the premises so we won’t have to drive any where, and there is a hot tub and king sized beds,” replied Agent White.
“Great. What are we waiting for?” asked Duo. He smiled pleasantly as the agent started the car and headed them towards their destination for the night.
~*~
The hotel they stopped at for the night was first class (only the best, as Simon had instructed the agents) and check in was a breeze with Heero using the corporate charge card that Simon had insisted he take. They dropped off their packages in the luxury room on the top floor and headed for the four-star restaurant that the hotel boasted, after cleaning up a bit. Duo had decided to forgo a complete shower, anxious as he was for a good meal. His pancakes had long since worn off and they had only eaten snacks while on the road. He was really looking forward to a great dinner.
The two sat across from each other at a cozy table for two in a small alcove at the back of the restaurant. The agents had been left to their own devices for the evening. Agent Green had been skeptical about leaving the two unattended, but Heero had assured her that they wouldn’t be leaving the premises and that Duo would be perfectly safe in his company. She reluctantly agreed, but insisted that the four dine at the same time, just for her own peace of mind. Heero agreed to that stipulation, glad that the woman insisted on providing back up should he need it, but not intruding on his dinner with his lover.
Now he sat quietly, looking into Duo's bright indigo eyes, which had lit up when he had gotten a look at the lavish menu.
“Can I have what ever I want?” Duo asked, eyes wide in anticipation.
“Sure,” affirmed Heero. “It’s on Simon tonight.”
“Then I want the prime rib, the big one, rare and a baked potato with globs of butter and sour cream. And a salad with ranch,” Duo told the waitress that was waiting to take their order.
“I’ll have the filet mignon, medium, the rice pilaf and a salad, no dressing,” Heero told the woman. “And water to drink.”
“And a coke. I want a coke,” chimed in Duo.
The waitress smiled and told them she would get their drinks and salad directly, then left the pair to relax.
They didn’t talk much as they waited, each lost in their own thoughts. They ate silently when the food arrived, Heero noting the signs of pain that Duo was displaying about midway through their meal.
“Would you like another pain killer?” Heero finally asked as Duo shifted uncomfortably for about the fourth time.
“Yeah, that might be good. My shoulder is starting to throb a bit,” admitted Duo, who really hadn’t wanted to ask for more drugs. He took the proffered pills and swallowed them gratefully, flashing a smile of appreciation to his concerned lover.
After he had polished off his huge slab of meat, he looked at Heero, pleading silently with his expressive eyes. Heero just sighed and shook his head ruefully. He knew all too well what that look meant. He signaled the waitress and asked her to bring the dessert cart to the table. Duo beamed at him happily, almost drooling in his anticipation.
Duo chose an obscene confection of chocolate and more chocolate, while Heero chose a small fruit tart. By the time Duo had polished off every bit of the chocolate monstrosity, the pain pills had started to kick in and he was smiling dreamily. Heero knew it would only be a matter of time before the pills totally knocked Duo out. Time to head up to the room before he ended up carrying his lover out of the restaurant.
They exited the dining room, Duo hanging on Heero's arm and garnering some stares from the other patrons, most just of mild curiosity, a couple of distaste, but Heero ignored them. Duo didn’t seem to notice at all. The two agents, departing discretely behind the pair, kept their respective thoughts to themselves. The four took the elevator to the top floor and parted at their respective rooms.
“Good night, ladies,” said Duo, trying to give a flourishing bow to the agents, only to pitch rather unceremoniously into Heero. “Oops. Sorry, 'Ro. Thanks for the save. Good drugs, you know?”
Heero just grunted in reply, then nodded to the agents before hauling the giggling Duo into their room.
Once inside, Duo flopped onto the bed and sighed contentedly. He was almost ready to nod off when he was rather rudely pulled back into reality by Heero.
“Not yet, babe,” Heero told him. “Shower first, then sleep.”
“But Heero,” Duo whined. “I don’t wanna. Just wanna sleep.”
“No. Shower first,” replied Heero adamantly.
“But I can’t stand up. I’ll fall and hurt myself. So I just need to sleep now. Shower in the morning,” said Duo, trying to be reasonable. “ ‘sides, I don’t smell that bad, do I?”
“No, but you’ll feel better if you’re clean before you go to sleep, and you need to undress anyway, so you might as well shower. Besides, I need to tend to your shoulder,” replied Heero, pulling off Duo's shoes, then pulling Duo into a sitting position.
“But I can’t stand up that long,” Duo tried again, flopping back down. “My legs aren’t working properly anymore.”
“We’ll take one together, and I’ll hold you up,” stated Heero.
“Ack! Perv! You just want to get me naked when I’m defenseless,” crowed Duo. “I see how you are, trying to take advantage of a poor drugged person.”
Heero merely grunted again as he pulled the giggling Duo to his feet and headed him into the bathroom. He deposited him on the closed commode and turned his attention to the water before returning to Duo. He removed the bandages from his shoulder, then pinned up the long braid of hair, not wanting to try to wash it while Duo was in such a drugged state, the quickly disrobed before pulling Duo to his feet. He finished undressing the squirming Duo, then pulled him into the shower.
It was all Heero could do to keep the slippery, laughing Duo on his feet under the water without getting his hair soaked, but somehow he managed to get the two of them washed without incident. Duo was sagging against him as he dried him off and fell asleep almost as soon as his head hit the pillow when Heero finally got him into the bed. Heero finished drying and dressing himself, then tended to Duo's wound, taking care to make sure it was clean and dry once more.
Once finished, Heero took advantage of the peace and quiet to phone Simon and reassure him that they had made it through the first day without any untoward instances. He could hear the relief in Simon’s voice as the older man thanked him for the call.
“So, is the house ready for us?” Heero asked.
“Every thing is taken care of,” replied Simon. “As soon as you feel Duo is up to it, we’ll get the wheels rolling on your new careers. We’re pretty excited about it.”
“I think it will be a good thing,” said Heero. “This really isn’t a good life for us any more. We need a change.”
“We’ll do what ever it takes,” Simon told him. “We are forever in your debt for what you did, and we intend to take care of you.”
“Thanks,” said Heero. “You have no idea what that means to us.”
“No problem. Just take care of our Duo. We can’t wait to see our little songbird soar to the heights,” Simon joked. “Just don’t let him fly away.”
“He’ll fly alright, but he’ll always come home to roost with me, no problem. I have all the faith in the world in Duo,” replied Heero.
“Better get some sleep,” said Simon. “Tomorrow will be another long day.”
“You have no idea. Thanks for everything. I’ll call when we get to the house,” Heero told him, then hung up.
Duo was snuggle in the blankets, snoring gently, so Heero took advantage of the moment to get some sleep. He had no doubts that tomorrow’s drive would be no less tumultuous than today’s had been. Life was never easy or peaceful where Duo Maxwell was concerned, but it was never dull, either. And their future looked to be as full of excitement as any of their past had been. Heero sank into a peaceful sleep, his dreams filled with soaring golden songbirds, singing happily in their glorious captivity.
