Okay, so about the God of Destruction dying if a Kai is killed… I don’t understand the logistics of it, so I’ve made the difficult decision to ignore it. If I write it in without it making sense to me it’s going to jack up the story, and if I tweak it to make it make sense to me I’ll have wasted some storytelling time. I hope you understand, and give it a chance. Okay, shuttin’ my facehole. :)

There wasn’t much left of the planet, Whis noted. It was mostly… chunks of varying sizes. Whis knew it to be one of Freeza’s many casualties, so it was more than likely that no lives had been lost in its destruction.
It seemed the dawn of the age of the new gods was off to a fast start.
It didn’t take him long to find them, curled up naked and content together at the center of the chaos on one of the largest remaining chunks of land. He couldn’t help chuckling; it was quite clear that Goku had gotten over his fear of taking action where his mate was concerned.
‘Beerus is gone,’ he thought, touching down lightly beside them. The universe was safer with these two in a position of power for many, many reasons. The long fall of Universe Seven had been halted here, thanks in large part to his own patient machinations. It should have been a triumphant moment but all Whis felt was an intense relief.
If Goku and Vegeta hadn’t been able to pull this off, if Beerus had killed them Whis now realized he would have reacted… poorly. He knelt at Vegeta’s side, a faint smile on his lips. “You are quite the unbelievable pair,” he whispered.
To his surprise Vegeta opened his eyes, groggy but aware. “...Whis?” That grogginess faded instantly though as he remembered exactly why this all had to happen so fast. Had there been some loophole in the manner of Beerus’ death he hadn’t taken into account? Even if he or Goku were up for a fight…
Whis was his friend.
“No, no it’s all right,” Whis rushed to confirm at seeing - and being humbled by - the horror in Vegeta’s eyes. “Beerus was gone before I arrived; he wasn’t able to give me any orders. You both exceeded my hopes. Thank you. I don’t know what I would have done-” He stopped, unable to finish that sentence. He would have had no choice but to kill them if he’d been ordered to do so. But he knew he could not have survived the loss. One way or another, that would have been the end for Whis as well.
As always, Vegeta understood what wasn’t said. “This is a fine mess you’ve gotten us into,” he said with more than a little relief in that sarcastic tone.
Whis laughed, wiping his eyes. “You do tell me I’m troublesome. I don’t know what else you expected. And speaking of a mess… I must congratulate you. I’ve never seen a planet destroyed in such a… creative way before.”
“What are you talking about- Oh.” Vegeta huffed, amusement plain. “I hadn’t noticed. But I’ll keep it in mind.” He tried to push himself up but the effort made his head swim and he lay back down with a groan.
“Damn, I was hoping the energy drain wouldn’t be so bad this time around, but it feels like… Whis, am I crazy?”
“No, you’re right,” Whis said, surprised as well. “Goku is holding all the god energy between you.”
“Asshole!” Vegeta growled, shooting his elbow backward right into Goku’s gut. In response Goku only flopped over onto his back and snored louder. “Hn. It’s for the best, I suppose my body knows what it’s doing. At least I don’t have to put up with it for long.”
“Well, we can probably find a way around it, at least for short periods of time. In the meantime, get some rest. A lot has happened and your bodies need time to acclimate.”
“My body is tired. My mind is not, especially with some very powerful variables on the field.”
“Champa,” Whis said knowingly. “They didn’t get along, but Beerus was his twin. I doubt he’ll let that go unanswered.”
“Right. Assuming he comes looking for revenge, Kakarot is going to have a serious problem with me fighting even if we find a way around the energy drain. If we can delay any confrontation for two turns that would be best.”
“How long can you wait to go to Universe Six?”
Vegeta grimaced, suddenly feeling far more tired than he had. The lure of seeing his people again, of seeing what they were like and finding out if they could help each other was irresistible. “I’ll wait if I have to. What don’t I know that I should?”
“I’m not sure, honestly. Champa is Beerus with less power and far more laziness. He won’t think, he’ll just attack.”
“He won’t be a problem, at least beating him won’t be a problem. But if we do, do we take on responsibility for Universe Six as well?”
Whis nodded and Vegeta cursed. “That’s a lot to handle.”
“It is, but if anyone could do it, it would be you two. Something else to consider is Vados’ reaction. She is… deviously clever and incredibly strong. And even though she is my sister and one-time teacher she has always kept her own counsel; I’ve never understood her well.”
“This just gets better and better,” Vegeta groaned, running a hand over his face.
“Hmm… Beerus once let it slip that he believed Champa was looking for something important,” Whis said, remembering the conversation. “Now that he’s gone I can be more proactive. I may be able to find out what it was. The more information we have, the better.”
Vegeta was so drained he just wanted to go back to sleep, but another question beckoned and he couldn’t in good conscience leave it unasked. “Whis, I was thinking. Since planets are twinned in both Universe Six and Seven, maybe… with Beerus gone there’s nothing to hold you to this Universe anymore. You could go there. Try to find what you lost.”
For a moment Whis just stared at him, but shaky laughter found its way out of him. He didn’t know why it was happening, in fact he felt like crying. Vegeta seemed to understand he wasn’t being mocked, and waited for the fit to pass.
Whis would leave, finally free of his responsibilities here, and his absence would make the coming transitions and challenges ten times more difficult for Goku and Vegeta both. Yet when Goku awoke to such a major decision made without him, he wouldn’t even be angry. He would hug Vegeta and tell him he did the right thing, probably even comfort him, understanding what a sacrifice Vegeta had made personally in insisting that he go.
It had been a long time since anyone had given enough of a shit to put him first.
Finally able to speak again he addressed his friend in almost his usual lilt. “It is a kind suggestion. But I would greatly prefer to stay and tend to you and Goku, if that’s all right with the two of you. In my experience trying to recreate the joys of the past almost always ends in further heartache. Besides, I believe I’ve already found what I thought I’d lost.” Whis, usually so in control of himself, seeming to know every possible angle to every problem found himself groping for words. He chuckled. “I don’t even know if that makes sense.”
Vegeta sighed, more open than usual. “This feeling with him,” he said, gesturing over his shoulder. “I don’t understand it either. Even though I’ve never let him this close before I… could swear I remember the feeling, but how do you remember something you’ve never had?” He stopped, chuckled. “What were we thinking? Everything was so much easier when we didn’t care about anything but our own goals. This is all so… very confusing. And irritating.”
“You said it,” Whis returned with just as much humor. “But I wouldn’t change a thing. Would you?”
“Of course not,” Vegeta snorted. “Just don’t tell him that,” he said, kicking Goku lightly only to have his snoring get louder again.
“Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think he already knows.”
“I think you might be right,” Vegeta said yawning.
“Oh yes, that reminds me. You let Piccolo raise the last twins. I should get these two.”
Vegeta’s eyes, which had been drifting shut, snapped back open. “You should… what?”
“Oh, you heard me. Why not? Do you like Piccolo better than you like me, as if that were possible?”
“...I’m not having this conversation right now,” the beleaguered Saiyan groaned.
“Ah! So the matter is open to conversation!” Whis clapped happily. “Good. We can discuss it later!”
Vegeta sighed long and hard, grumbling and Whis chuckled. Something inside him finally started to relax. Part of him did mourn Beerus’ loss; Whis had watched over him since he had been old enough to bear his title after all. But it wasn’t that simple. What he mourned was the loss of what Beerus could and should have been. And now he was comforted by the fact that he could serve, not because it was his job or duty, but because he wanted to. And because he believed that these two strange and wonderful creatures would be more than Beerus ever could have been.
He was caught off guard a little when Vegeta frowned, clearly at his limit but sensing something that might be trouble. A curse escaped the exhausted man when he felt the source of all the hostility coming their way, trying to fight off his fatigue to stand. While he wasn’t any stronger than Goku at this point, Goku wasn’t as used to fighting through such a massive energy deficit and Vegeta wasn’t about to risk him.
Once their systems acclimated to their new power they would never be this weak again. It was the perfect time to strike out at them, if anyone so chose.
Whis wouldn’t stand for it. During this transition period he had all the authority he needed to ensure their safety; Zeno wouldn’t question any actions he took in the next few months at least. He would be as heavy-handed in their protection as he needed to be. “I’ll handle this. Go back to sleep.”
“I don’t need a nursemaid,” Vegeta grumbled.
“Oh yes,” Whis agreed as Vegeta wobbled on all fours. “You’re very threatening at the moment.” Vegeta, though clearly irritated glared at him dubiously, and Whis correctly deduced the reason. “I risk nothing in this. The Omni-King will expect me to safeguard you two for a while; whatever I have to do won’t be questioned.”
“If you’re sure-”
Goku chose that moment to throw in his own grumbling. “V’geeeetahhhhh? M’tired. ‘N kinda cold. Get back here.”
“Quit whining Kakarot, ’m not your fuckin’ space heater,” Vegeta shot back sleepily, falling back onto Goku’s shoulder.
Whis couldn’t help twisting the knife of aggravation. “Has anyone ever told you you’re adorable when you’re grumpy and tired, Vegeta?”
Goku chuckled his way back to dreamland while a flustered Vegeta grumbled his way back into sleep out of pure self defense. Whis’ smile disappeared shortly after as several uninvited guests landed behind him. When he turned to face them all traces of amusement were gone.
Whis’ eyes narrowed. The Kais. All of those remaining had gathered, though North Kai - Goku’s much loved mentor - looked none too pleased to be present.
There were realms in which these so-called guardians of their universes worked hand in hand with the destruction gods for the benefit of their charges, and Universe Seven wasn’t even close to being one of them. The Kais here had feared Beerus with his volatile temper and outright bullying. There had been enmity from their first meeting, not that Whis blamed them - at least not for that. But if the Kais intended to carry that enmity and mistrust forward, well… Whis wasn’t going to allow it while Goku and Vegeta were vulnerable.
“Why are you all here?” he asked coolly. “I don’t recall issuing invitations.”
East Kai shrugged, looking around Whis to the two new gods. “Curiosity, mostly.”
“You don’t speak for us,” Kibito Kai snapped. Chastened, she fell to silence.
“She certainly speaks for me,” Old Kai laughed in his manic way. “I always knew you were up to something but this… Very clever, Whis. It’s beyond even my imaginings! Such a progressive idea-”
“I highly doubt that,” Kibito Kai interrupted. “In the past I’ve trusted Goku, I’ve even trusted Vegeta. But the Saiyans were one of the most violent races in the universe. Their very nature rewards anger and violence and now that blood runs through their veins alongside all the powers of a god. You must know that there’s a reason the gods of Creation are the shortest lived of all the gods. What will happen when boredom sets in after an eon or two? If they lose their sense of right and wrong they could make us look back on the days of Beerus with fondness!”
“Our numbers and our leadership both were decimated by Buu,” West Kai interrupted, uncharacteristically solemn. “For once we can stop a problem before it becomes one. This may be our only chance to… take action.”
“Taking ‘action.’ Ah, so that’s how you’re justifying this. And what will you do after you’ve slaughtered them in cold blood?” Whis countered. “Take your chances with Zeno’s next appointment? Good luck with that. Do let me know before you decide to approach him; I’d like to be elsewhere when he decides to let this Universe join the ranks of the vaporized simply because you approached him on an off day.”
That was enough to give Kibito Kai pause but he pressed his case anyway. “Even though they are stronger than Beerus ever was their natures won’t ever permit them to be content with that strength, and you know it. Now that they have such a substantial lifespan there’s no telling where that unquenchable thirst for greater power will take them. This Universe may only be the start. Or…” Kibito Kai’s eyes narrowed as he considered something he hadn’t seen before. “Is your ambition what I should be concerned about? You are the one who set all this in motion. Are they your dogs, Whis? You are in the perfect position to be the power behind the throne.”
“My… ambition…?” Whis began to lose his temper, startling all present especially when a swell of unfocused power rolled across them. “You all, who only get involved when your own lives are threatened or when your victory is a given. You… you, who have come here, now to render a death sentence out of fear of your own mortality have the audacity to question my motives?” he hissed coldly.
It was more than enough to shame Kibito Kai. “There was nothing we could do before now. The balance had to be maintained-”
“Balance?” Whis laughed harshly, his own anger and resentments from millions of years ago finally demanding redress. “Don’t you dare speak to me about the balance. You destroyed that balance the very day the God of Destruction made an alliance with the strongest being in the universe out of boredom and you, its supposed Guardians, stood by and did nothing!”
“That wasn’t us and you know it,” West Kai interrupted. “We had nothing to do with those decisions, they were made before our time!”
“Oh, I know it,” Whis snarled icily. “I know it was well before your time. But you became complicit as you too came to power, choosing to dwell in willful ignorance instead of trying to fix things. Beerus turned this entire Universe into his own personal playground with not a word of opposition from you. Maybe he would have killed you but your deaths would have forced the Omni-King’s hand here, making him finally do something about Beerus. An end to your lives, yes, but a noble and worthy sacrifice. Or maybe that wouldn’t even have been necessary. In the early days a serious challenge would have made Beerus think twice about his behavior, but I suppose none of that matters now. Because now this Universe is drowning in dead races. Dead worlds. And some of those worlds-”
Whis stopped for a moment, choking on his own grief as memory overwhelmed him. A cacophony of voices, raised in fear and calling for him… he had heard them all, but he hadn’t had the authority to act. These beings had not only the authority but the responsibility, and out of fear they had done nothing. Part of him would never, ever forgive them for their inaction - at best.
Their cowardice at worst.
“Some of those worlds were… very much loved,” he finished quietly.
Kibito Kai blinked in wide-eyed astonishment. Aloof, absent-minded… he would never have expected such a creature as Whis to have ever been injured by Beerus’ actions.
“When was the last time,” North Kai finally said, “that we were truly able to guard or control any of our Universe? It was that very question that led me to train Goku in the techniques that I did. I saw something in him that we lost a long time ago: a sense of right and purpose. I had hoped that he could begin to change things, but I never expected any of this. And granted, this isn’t a democracy. But… if my words mean anything, you should know that I’ve always trusted Goku, and from what I can see the darkness in Vegeta’s heart has finally been broken. I say… we leave them alone. Or better yet, we help them.”
At that moment Vegeta groaned at some internal pain, drawing the attention of the gathered. In his sleep Goku curled around him and pulled him tight against his chest. The grimace of pain left Vegeta’s face almost immediately and his tail wound itself around Goku’s thigh.
Whis could have shielded them from prying eyes in such an intensely private moment, but he felt that the Kais had needed to see it. It demonstrated the difference between them and Beerus more ably than words ever could. “These two aren’t Beerus. And they aren’t whoever Zeno would eventually send to replace him. You see that now, don’t you? Or have you become that blind to life?”
Murmurs and gasps arose from the group as they finally saw the two new sources of energy inside Vegeta. “A God of Destruction, capable of giving life,” Kibito Kai whispered quietly, finally seeing in them what Whis and North Kai had seen.
These two would never fall into the same self-serving patterns that seemed to plague the powerful and long-lived. No matter what happened, they were invested here, and would never lose their respect for life. After a few seconds Kibito Kai sighed and relaxed, and Whis knew the danger had passed.
“Strangely enough, these two bringers of Destruction are now this universe’s best chance to come back from the brink. If you are smart you’ll work with them, and bring an end to eons of inaction. ...Though maybe a little more thoughtfully next time.”
Kibito Kai chuckled shakily, freeing the others to leave with a quick gesture which all but North and Old Kai took. “Perhaps. And perhaps, maybe next time you decide to so drastically shake things up you give me a little warning? Dead gods don’t exactly bring up pleasant memories for me, you know.”
“I suppose you have a point. But I believe the kind of secrecy I had to employ to get us all here is a thing of the past. I meant what I said. We’re all going to have to work together to get things back on track here.”
“‘We?’ So you’re staying?”
“I suppose I have no choice,” Whis sighed. “It seems that going from having no personal connections to anyone living to having a very strong one has gotten the best of me.”
“Connections, indeed,” Old Kai mused. “The unbreakable connection that started with a smile and a song decades ago has brought us all the way here.”
“What are you talking about?” Kibito Kai asked in confusion. Sometimes he couldn’t tell if Old Kai was being wise, crazy or just plain lust-obsessed.
“You’ve got a lot to learn yet!” he cackled and North Kai laughed as well, in on some joke that neither Kibito Kai or Whis were privy to. “The Universe has a will of its own if you’re still enough to see it. What we call ‘fate’ and ‘destiny’ are simply its hands moving, and they’ve been working overtime.”
Kibito Kai just blinked at him uncomprehending which set off another shared chuckle. Old Kai elbowed North Kai. “He really thought it was coincidence!”
With that they took their leave, still chuckling. “Well. That was irritating.”
“You have no right to complain, Whis. You don’t have to put up with them every day. Besides, you barely ever tell anyone the whole truth, Mr. Cryptic!”
“True enough,” the eons-older being conceded with a laugh of his own.
“You know, I often dreamed of what it might be like to be more involved in the Universe’s goings-on,” Kibito Kai mused out loud. “But I was told that that wasn’t the way things were done. Do you really think… that can change?”
Whis shrugged. “You are the highest ranking Kai. You tell me.”
Kibito Kai took a deep breath. He was the youngest, and had the least amount of experience of all the Kais. But he was their de facto leader, and it was time to embrace that responsibility, and he knew the perfect place to start. “What you lost there on that planet my ancestors failed to save,” Kibito Kai said quietly. “Was it a lover? A friend?”
It was clear that something had changed in Kibito Kai and Whis was too curious not to answer. “The entire world was such to me, those things and more. And it was gone - all of it - in an instant. That’s all I’ll say.”
“I am… sorry. For the way things have been, and for your own sacrifices.” Whis nodded solemnly, accepting the apology. It was a beginning, and a good one.
Kibito Kai turned his attention back to Goku and Vegeta. “You truly would have warred with us over these two, wouldn’t you?”
Whis raised an eyebrow, smiling back. “Not that it would have been much of a war. But yes, if you’d insisted on being dense and trying to kill them I would have. They are too important to lose.”
“Too important for the future of this universe? Or too important to you?”
Whis chuckled. “Lesson number one. When fishing, cast a longer line. Less chance of the fish seeing you coming that way. I’ve told you all I am willing to about my thoughts and motives.”
“That’s fair, I suppose. Wait…” Kibito Kai said, suddenly noticing something. “They’re not balanced right now. Is that because of the pregnancy?” Whis nodded briefly and even Kibito Kai could see that Whis expected trouble though he was sure Whis wasn’t going to tell him why, at least not yet.
“Well, I can at least do this-” The smaller being stretched his arms toward the slumbering Saiyans before closing his eyes in concentration. Whis kept a close watch as a ball of white energy formed between the kai’s hands, and flew toward them when he released it. It dissipated into them, and even Whis was perplexed.
Kibito Kai smiled, looking quite pleased with himself. “Well? What do you see now?”
“Ah! That’s a good trick!” Whis said, brightening. “They’re completely hidden.” Though Vegeta would be far from helpless he wouldn’t be able to take on Vados or Champa. It remained to be seen how the energy drain on Vegeta’s system was going to affect his and Goku’s fighting strength, and his sister was no fool. If she knew of any liability she would have to move to exploit it; safer that she not be able to find them. “Can you keep it up until the children are born?”
“I could use a little help as time goes by,” Kibito Kai said, putting a hand on Whis’ shoulder and giving him what he needed to see through the concealment. “It’s going to get pretty draining.”
“Done, I should be able to take over when you get tired.”
“What will you do with them now? Maybe back to Beerus’ planet? Goku is going to need time to adapt to having so much more power; don’t want him sneezing the Earth into oblivion.”
“Unnecessary. Beerus simply never cared about controlling his strength and power; it’s been second nature to them for most of their lives. Earth is where they need to be right now. It’s also where I need to be. I’m hungry, and out of tea!”
Kibito Kai shifted a bit, clearing his throat hesitantly. “You wouldn’t happen to… ah, that is… do you need a hand with those two?” Whis cocked a delicate eyebrow at him and he blushed. “I do miss my friends. I’d like an excuse for a visit.”
Whis just smiled. Of course he didn’t need the help, but it would do to get to know this Kibito Kai better. Perhaps convince him to unfuse again, to rely on his own strength. “As a matter of fact, managing them both would be a little unwieldy.”
After convincing a mostly unconscious Goku that it was safe to let go of Vegeta just for a little while, it was time to divvy up the Saiyans. Whis left the smaller Kibito Kai to heft Goku’s bigger frame onto his back. He couldn’t help it, he thought laughing to himself and holding Vegeta tight against his chest. He felt the need to protect Vegeta and the children he was carrying.
Maybe he didn’t want or need to leave his position, but there was something he did need. He’d been around death for far too long, it was time to be surrounded by new life for a change. And as much as he had loathed Beerus’ keeping Saiyan mated pairs as pets he had to admit that it had been nice to have them and their children brightening what had become a dreary existence.
He had only been half kidding earlier. He fully intended to make Vegeta hand over the children now forming inside him, even if he had to harass Vegeta for the next five months straight.
He could just ask nicely, of course. They’d become so close he wouldn’t even have to explain; it wasn’t as though Vegeta would refuse him much of anything.
He smiled to himself. 'But teasing him is far too much fun.’
________________________________________________________________________________
The first thing Vegeta became aware of was the softness of a plush bed at his back, much like the one he’d had at Capsule Corp., and a quick look around proved him to be in his room there.
The person attached to the fluffy mop of hair pressed into his shoulder began to move as well, snuggling into him and sighing.
“V’geta?” Goku mumbled. “How long you think it’s been?”
“I don’t know. If you let me up I’ll go find out.”
“...Will you bring me some food?”
“Yes Kakarot,” Vegeta sighed, rolling his eyes. “I will bring you something to eat when I come back.”
Goku hummed his sleepy agreement and started to roll off of him.
Started to.
Until he chanced to feel more than one life laying underneath him.
Suddenly wide awake he shot up on his hands and knees, staring down at Vegeta in shock.
Vegeta just returned the stare in confusion. “...What?”
“Three, there are three! You and two more, inside you- Vegeta, you’re… you’re pregnant!”
“Oh, really?” Vegeta asked blandly. “You were there when it happened, weren’t you?”
Goku just continued to stare at him and he started to get uncomfortable. Only Piccolo had ever seen him in this state and known about it. He still felt like something of a freak of nature, even though he was anything but. The fact that the solitude he’d enjoyed during his pregnancies up ‘til now was effectively over with was beginning to sink in and he wondered what kinds of scrutiny he would be subjected to. Being treated as a sideshow freak was something he dreaded. “Flies are going to choke you soon,” he mumbled.
Goku didn’t seem to hear him, slowly reaching out a hand that stopped and hovered over Vegeta’s stomach. “I can’t believe this is finally happening…” Goku said, throat suddenly tight.
There was only curiosity and wonder in Goku’s tone, and though that was comforting Vegeta was still uneasy, though he couldn’t put his finger on the ‘why’ of it. He took Goku’s hovering hand in his own and pressed it down flat against his abdomen, watching Goku swallow hard as his hand made contact.
“I’ve wanted this for so long…” Thoughts and emotions clanged around inside him so loudly he almost couldn’t breathe, and chief among them were excitement and elation. Only when he felt Vegeta reaching out to soothe him did he recognize the anxiety in himself. Unlike Vegeta though, he knew the cause right away. “Vegeta, could you just tell me again…? Please?”
//I’m not saying this is going to be easy; I don’t know how to do this with someone else. But I won’t make you leave me. Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out-//
Together. Goku sighed, his fears easing as Vegeta pulled him down into a kiss. We’re finally together.

Next up: I’m not entirely sure. There are a few different parts to the story demanding to be written all at once. As much as I hate to do this to you all, I’m going to take a longer break than usual before posting again, so I beg your patience. A month at the outside, but I doubt it will be that long. And by then I should have enough material for regular (read: not late!) updates again.
TristaML: Yup, it was nice to finally write some of the bigger payoffs. I must confess I have never written anything this long and involved before; I’m glad it’s holding your attention! As always, thank you for the encouragement!
Anon: I’m glad you gave the story a try, I really appreciate it. My main goal is a Goku and Vegeta story, I wanted everything else to be a backdrop to that, even the mpreg stuff. ...Although now I seem to be writing a Vegeta and Whis bromance as well. Darn Whis for being so charming! Gohan has become quite the quandary. I think his ‘happily ever after’ is going to (have to) look very different from the norm but even I’m not sure what that is yet. Again, thank you!
ZeoViolet: I must confess, it felt great to finally bring them together the way they should be. In some ways, that last chapter was the start to their story. I’m glad you’re still enjoying this beast of a fic. :D
