Chapter Thirty-one
You lingered next to the shop as you waited for the girl Gohan to describe to show up. He was supposed to meet her at the center of Satan City's main shopping and entertainment district. If the time on the nearby clock was right, she was late. You leaned back against a guard post that guarded a large pedestrian walkway. Gohan came out of the store, licking his fingers as the ice cream started to melt. You smiled when you turn around to watch him try to eat the ice cream cookie sandwich without getting messy. He was failing.
You reached out and gently took the second one from him when he got close enough. "No sign of her so far."
"Really, I was sure she said around noon," Gohan replied as he checked his watch. It was two minutes after noon.
"Did she sat at noon or around noon?" You asked for clarification.
Earlier he said at noon. Now he was changing it to around noon. You licked around your ice-cream treat to help reapply its form. You didn't realize that Gohan was paying more attention than even he realized. Gohan made a thoughtful sound in the back of his throat as he mimicked what you had just done, unconsciously.
"Around noon I think? Does that matter?"
"Depends on what type of girl she is. She could be late by your standards because she was fixing up her hair for the date. Or trying on every cute outfit trying to find the right one for you. Or a lot of different things."
"Girls do that?" Gohan asked. "Doesn't that seem silly?"
"To each their own," you shrugged.
You ate your ice cream sandwich in relative silence as Gohan thought about what you said. Now he felt bad about trying to get out of the date since the girl, Angela, was putting so much effort into it.
"Maybe I should just go on the date? I mean, if she's putting that much effort into it."
"Hmmm that's up to you Gohan. But in my opinion you shouldn’t be blackmailed into anything. Doesn't seem like the start of a good relationship. Especially if it's your first one. It is right?"
You'd guessed that based on how he described his life. It seemed to you that he'd been just about as isolated as Goku had been. Most of his life was spent learning or fighting for his life. But it was even worse than Goku in the sense that going to High School was the first chance he had ever interacted with kids his own age. Or around his own age. Goku at least had Krillin and Bulma.
"Yes, this would have been my first," Gohan said honestly, not embarrassed by that which was good.
"So it's your choice," you said as you hopped up on the sidewalk divider, sitting on it.
"I guess when I see her I'll go with what feels right," Gohan finally settled, buying himself time before he had to make a choice. "How do you know all this stuff? About human girls and dating?"
You blinked, deciding how to tell him without sounding too weird. You took a few bites and nibbles out of your icecream sandwich as you thought it over. You didn't want to lie to him but the truth was a little hard to swallow. Then again...he'd grown up knowing about aliens and magic dragons, so maybe it wasn't as hard to believe as it had been for you.
"Well you see—"
You didn't have time to explain as a girl walked up to Gohan. She moved between the respectable distance that had been between you and the half saiyan. Which meant that you didn't have the best view of her, but you did see enough.
"She's cute," you mouthed, voicelessly.
Gohan looked at you with wide eyes. He could just make out your head from atop Angela's. You were telling him that the girl was cute. He supposed she was. But what did that have to do with anything?
"Gohan! I'm so happy to see you!" Angela replied, looking up at him with her large amethyst eyes.
"Uh hi Angela," Gohan said nervously.
"Are you ready for our date? I am!"
"Well you see, I—"
He wasn't given time to explain as Angela linked arms with him. She started to move him away from the major crosswalk area. Which meant that he sent fighting her. You finished off the icecream sandwich in a few large bites as Gohan moved away. And you'd been planning to leave right up until you saw him look back. He had a pleading look on his face as the girl snuggled into his arm.
That was when you decided to step in to help. You caught up with them easily enough, even through the crowds. And you tapped on the redhead's shoulder to get her attention.
"Huh? Do I know you?" She asked.
She did. She obviously knew you. You had almost all of your classes with her because that's just how the high school was set up.
"Gohan and I were talking, you're being rude," you started off with.
Angela was taken back. She pulled Gohan closer to her. Or more aptly, moved herself closer to Gohan. His arm was being used to separate her breasts with how tight she held onto his arm. Gohan looked a little panicked when he realized that. You didn't brain him. It was an awkward situation.
"Well Gohan and I are on a date," she returned passionately.
"No you're not. You're blackmailing him. That's not a date. That's practically kidnapping. Coercion at best."
"What do you know? You're the school's All Star but you've never even gone out with a boy. Gohan wants to go out with me, isn't that right Gohan?"
She was going to make a scene. You could tell. Which did not bode well for Gohan's secret if she decided to continue that scene at school. If she only did it here you doubted many people would pay attention. There was a certain anonymity and protection that came with being inside of a big crowd.
"Angela—"
"See, he wants to be on the date with me," she insisted.
You reminded yourself to count down from ten. After coming back to Earth with all of your organs and glands intact, you found that you didn't have the same amount of patience as you once did. It had been subtle at first but you definitely felt more aggressive. You had way more aggressive impulses and urges that was for sure. What you weren't so sure of was if that was biological or situational. More than likely it was a mix of both.
"The only reason he's here is because you threatened to tell everyone what you saw him wearing," you settled on instead of something a bit meaner. "And silly or not, Gohan is at his best when he's wearing that. So you need to forget you saw what you saw and move on with life. Let him get back to what he's good at doing without you trying to distract him."
"Wait, are you saying you saw Gohan in what I saw him in?"
You nodded. "Yeah, he showed it off a few days ago. He chose to show me; you were never meant to see what you saw on the rooftop."
As you and Angela traded sentences, Gohan stayed quiet. His eyes kept going from between you to the redhead on his arm. Once your last sentence reached her ears though, Angela's grip lessened.
"Rooftop? What are you talking about?"
"Yeah, the rooftop yesterday. That's why I wanted to talk to you today. I wanted to ask that you not tell anyone what you saw. Because if you did that could be bad. It wouldn't be just me who suffered but my family and..." his eyes moved over to you though he didn't actually say your name.
Fair point. You were involved now. Belatedly you kind of hit yourself for that. You had been trying to figure out how to deal with your own messes and your own emotional baggage. And yet at the first opportunity, you got involved with Gohan's.
"Gohan! I thought you were a nice boy!" Angela said as she pushed herself away from the tall teenager. "But What are you doing showing a girl your underwear? What were you doing up on the roof huh? What you do best?"
You were just as flabbergasted as he was. You had no idea what she was talking about. Gohan had never mentioned anything about underwear. He'd been concerned about his identity as the Great Saiyaman.
"You just got to this school! And you're already...ug, I can't believe I ever thought you were a good guy Gohan! You're nothing but an exhibitionist!"
Wow just wow. You really had no idea what she was going on about. And it only got worse when she turned it around on you next.
"And you! I can't believe it. You know, I thought you two were cousins or something cause you have the same last name and are always hanging out! But cousins shouldn't be seeing each other in their underwear or doing what they're good at in them with each other! That's just sick and wrong! Wait till everyone at school hears!"
She turned to run off, practically in tears. You and Gohan just stood in shock. Seriously...what just happened?
Gohan slowly turned his head towards you, almost comedicly so. "Wait, your last name is Son too?"
You nodded, your eyes a mix of surprise, anger, and disbelief as you watched the redhead run off. You had a really bad feeling that you just stuck your foot in it. If she was true to her word, Angela was about to make your High School life hell.
"Did you pick that name when you got here because of my dad?"
You nodded slowly without looking at him. Your head was spinning around as you sharply remembered crude names being painted on what had once been your home. Those women at the snowy village had only known you about a day and they passed judgement on you. How much worse was High School going to be? Especially with some of the school thinking that you were related to him.
"...are you my aunt?" Gohan asked with almost a fearful tone.
Your head whipped to him at that. "Wait what?"
"Are you my father's sister? Is that why you chose our last name? You look about my age though, so you can't be as old as my dad. Did dad's saiyan parents escape the planet's destruction too?"
"Gohan," you stressed his name, wishing that you didn't have to have this conversation with him.
Especially when it was so hard to tell what he was feeling. His face was like a thoughtful mask as he tried to understand what was going on. Not that you could blame him.
"I don't want to talk about it," you finally told him.
But when you started to back away, Gohan reached for your hand and gripped tightly. He had an imploring look on his face. Searching. It made you pause at the raw emotion behind it. He was just like a lost little boy clinging to clues about their parents. You could practically feel that as he held onto your non dominant hand.
"Please. I want to know."
"You really don't," you told him just loud enough that he heard it over the crowd.
"Yes, yes I do. Why can't you just tell me?"
"Because it's...complicated."
"How complicated could it be?...oh, oh wow. Don't tell me...you're my sister? Did dad cheat on mom?"
...technically he cheated on you, not Chichi. But you held that in. That was just some of the pain wanting to leak out from the fresh wound.
"It's not that either," you told him.
"Then what?"
"Can we not do this here?" You pleased.
Gohan considered your request as he looked seriously at you. He seemed so much more grown up with that expression. Especially with the way that he stood up straight. He held your hand tightly but not too tight as he started to pull you away. You let him lead you to wherever it was that he wanted. Which was apparently to an alleyway.
You realized why a bit too late. Gohan started to ascend into the sky. You gripped his hand tightly to hold him near as you explained.
"Gohan, I don't know how to fly."
That completely stunned him. He dropped down to the ground, his heels making a clicking sound because of his shoes. You blushed under his scrutiny.
"No way. Seriously?"
You nodded, letting go of his hand and averting your eyes. You felt your face warm up from a special blend of shame.
"Wow. I never thought I'd meet a saiyan who couldn't fly," Gohan breathed out in absolute suprise. "That limits your fighting style huh?"
And he made it worse. You mumbled out, "I've just started learning to fight."
Gohan took a step back in shock. That was something he never thought he would hear from someone who could manipulate their ki. Especially when that someone was a saiyan! It beggared belief!
"Oh. Oh wow," Gohan said with wide eyes. "Now I have to hear your story even more. I've never met a saiyan that couldn't...well you know...fight or fly."
"You also said you never met a girl saiyan," you snapped back defensively. Not that being a girl made any difference really, but it felt like the right thing to say.
Gohan backed up slightly with his hands raised. He hadn't meant to offend you but he should have known it was a touchy subject. From what he understood saiyans had been bred and born to fight. If you couldn't fight then you probably felt really bad about that.
"Look I'm sorry but like I said, all the saiyans I've met other than my dad haven't been very nice. And with the way Vegeta goes on about it...I just assumed that was normal. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."
"I know. It's just..."
" A touchy subject huh? I get it. Look, why don't I just carry you somewhere private so we can talk? Unless you just want to go back to your place?"
You accepted his offer. You didn't want to be cooped up in your studio apartment just in case he didn't like what he was hearing. You didn't think he'd hurt you but you didn't want to worry about what your neighbors may overhear.
