Chapter 32: Animal
Gohan was in a total daze later that night. Word had got around that he'd succeeded in ending his own life again and that he'd been found with his arms cut open. After ChiChi had finished sobbing and hugging him tightly, Goku had taken him to one of the unused bedrooms so that he could shower and change his bloody clothes. He managed all of that by himself on autopilot, finally sitting on the bed in a clean long sleeved shirt and sweatpants. He tied his damp hair back again, grateful to be free of all the sticky, drying blood all over him. His stomach was still aching like it was earlier that morning when Cell collapsed, apparently not even being briefly dead had fixed that. He began to wonder whether it was psychological or not.
A knock on the door brought him to the forefront of his brain again somewhat.
"Yeah?"
As Trunks entered the room, Gohan's eyes darted to the floor.
"Hey, I brought you some food," said Trunks, putting a tray down containing a sandwich and a glass of juice.
"Uh... thanks." He wasn't hungry at all, but appreciated the gesture. Trunks sat on the other end of the bed.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"I'm not sure," sighed Gohan. If it was anybody else he would have said no.
"It doesn't have to leave this room."
Gohan took that into account, but a burning question he'd had for a while came to the surface, and he finally had an opportunity to ask.
"Back when I was sick from the antranide, what did you mean... when you said that you knew how I felt?"
Trunks averted his eyes for a second as if he was collecting himself before he answered.
"When I was 16, I tried to kill myself."
Gohan looked at him properly for the first time that night, finally feeling a genuine connection for the first time in a while.
"How?" He didn't mean for that to be his answer, but Trunks indulged him anyway.
"Pills. My mom found me before it was too late."
"... I'm sorry. It's a shitty place to be."
"Why did you do it this time?" asked Trunks carefully.
"I didn't actually mean to," said Gohan nervously, but thankful that he could explain himself. "I just went too far with the cutting." He felt so guilty for putting his parents through that, his friends too.
"How long have you been hurting yourself?"
Gohan took a deep breath, fidgeting with one of his sleeves.
"Six years." Since he was 12 to be exact, one year to the day after Goku's death. He didn't remember why he did it in the first place, but it became an increasing habit as he got older.
"Do you want to stop?"
"I can't."
"You can," said Trunks. "I did."
"What?"
He lifted his shirt to reveal old scars on this lower stomach. They were so old by now that they had almost completely faded.
"How did you stop?"
"Trying to kill myself was a wake up call, I guess. It's not easy, but you need a way to keep busy."
"I thought training tomorrow might help. It's been so long since I've done any kind of training that wasn't with... " He trailed off not wanting to mention Cell to him at all. Secretly, he didn't want to remind his crush who he'd been sleeping with. "But I just... I needed to... "
"It's okay, Gohan."
Gohan felt himself finally cry, letting Trunks pull him into an embrace.
Cell had heard on the grapevine what had happened to Gohan, surprised that he went as far as to end his own life. Part of him wished that he had done it for him, but the thought of his secret finally being out was satisfaction enough. Gohan was humiliated once more, his literal wounds exposed for everyone to see. And soon, he'd coming running back to him to escape it all.
But it had been almost a week and he hadn't heard from the boy at all. He'd been given his own room this time, next door to Jeice and Krillin who had opted to share. They had postponed any kind of training until Gohan was ready, Goku insisted that they wait and not begin without him.
The day finally came, 8 days after Gohan's episode. The fighters were gathered on a training ground outside the house that morning. Goku suddenly lit up when a familiar face landed beside them.
"Pikkon! It's so good to see you!" he cried as Pikkon walked over to them.
"Good to see you, old friend."
Pikkon had come to meet them with some other fighters from the West galaxy. The Kais seemed to be gathering their strongest fighters to battle Frieza and his men.
"From what the kais have been gathering, it looks like Frieza is in remission for a while. We think he's building an army. A newer one, much stronger than his last."
"Yeah, we're going to need all the help we can get."
"Is this your son?" he asked, walking over to the other fighters.
"Yes, this is Gohan," said Goku as he and Pikkon joined the gang. Gohan turned his head to look at the alien who bore a striking resemblance to Piccolo. "Gohan, this is Pikkon. He's going to help us against Frieza."
"Hi," he said with a small smile, not knowing what else to say. He wasn't in the mood for small talk. Pikkon smiled back at him, before seeing Cell over with the Ginyu's.
"I'd have thought they would be on Frieza's side, especially the android."
"Uh, nope! Even Frieza's brother was fighting with us. He got captured a while ago," said Goku. "I guess all of this just proves how much danger we're all in. And it was all my fault."
"How could it possibly be your fault?"
"All the wishes we've been making with the dragon balls over the past few years. We should have known that things always come at a price. It's broken reality."
"You didn't know it would end this way. And you didn't know the Frieza would take advantage of it either. From what I heard, he held you all prisoner for months down there."
"Why are we even training?! It's not like we can hold Frieza off," said Krillin.
"You can at least destroy some of his men. Every little helps," said Gohan, as he approached them. He left Goku and Pikkon to catch up.
"I guess you can't have Frieza without an army... not matter how strong he is. Why does he need an army anyway?"
"To do all his dirty work for him," said Jeice, his comrades agreeing with him. "We did the conquering of the planets, wiping out races. We did it in his name rather than him doing it himself. It gives him more power, and more people fear him that way."
"It also gives him eyes everywhere," said Guldo, jokingly pointing at himself.
"So I guess we'll be fighting the army... and you'll be one of the guys fighting Frieza," said Recoome. Gohan's eyes widened.
"What? Me?" he stammered, not wanting to think about the possibility of facing him again.
"It took a super saiyan to beat him last time," remarked Krillin.
"Yeah, well it might take more than that this time. And it was my dad that beat him last time. And Trunks. I don't think I'll be much help."
Krillin, Yamcha and Tien looked stumped at Gohan's apparently shattered confidence in his own abilities. Vegeta waltzed in, having eavesdropped that last part.
"Don't think you're backing out of this, brat. We need your power."
Goku and Vegeta took charge in organising training exercises, pairing up the Ginyus with different people from their side. Pikkon took on Piccolo and Krillin. That just left the four saiyans in one group, Cell watching from a safe distance silently.
"Okay, now that we're somewhere safe, we can really test our strength. First, let's all power up to see what levels we're at."
Gohan took a deep breath before following the other three as they transformed into super saiyans. As they powered up further, he surprised to see that Vegeta and Goku has caught up to him, ascending to the next level. Trunks was aware that he had some catching up to do, but had fully mastered his current form.
"Your turn, Gohan," said Goku.
Another deep breath, and Gohan began channelling all of his energy for the first time in seven years. They felt his power climbing and climbing, so far that all the other fighters had stopped to watch. They hadn't felt Gohan's power like this since the Cell Games.
"Come on, Gohan. Dig deep, you can do this!"
He was almost there, but something was missing inside him. Something crucial. As soon as he peaked at his current form, he hit a wall. His aura broke and his hair turned black again; he fell to his hands and knees panting.
"What the hell just happened?!" shouted Vegeta. "You had it and then you just... gave up?!"
"Gohan, are you okay?" asked Trunks, dropping his form as well. He knelt down to see if Gohan was alright.
"Gohan, it's fine, we can try again - " said Goku.
Gohan wasn't listening to any of them, he could feel them all staring at him. He shrugged Trunks' hand off his shoulder and fled.
What the fuck?! Why can't I do it?!
Gohan finally stopped running when he got to one of the living areas. He couldn't explain it, he could get to super saiyan, but not any further. It was if he couldn't remember how, though it had been well over seven years since he last transformed. The everlasting cramping in his abdomen wasn't helping him either. It was beginning to become a distraction.
"Hey, it's okay, Gohan," said Krillin, as he entered the room with Jeice. Nobody else seemed to have joined them, which Gohan was relieved about.
"No it's not, it's embarrassing!" he groaned, running his hands through his hair.
"We'll figure it out, you've done it before, you can do it again."
"So what is this... ascended saiyan thing?" asked Jeice, only just getting his head around the initial super saiyan transformation.
"When I first fought Cell when I was 11, I was already a super saiyan, but I transformed again into a level beyond that," answered Gohan. That was about as simple as he could explain it.
"Right, so what happened to make you transform?"
"Everyone I cared about was getting hurt."
"Ah... "
"Yeah, let's not repeat that... " laughed Krillin nervously.
"Do you remember like... a particular feeling?" asked Jeice.
"It was anger, wasn't it?"
"Sort of... " Gohan had a puzzled expression on his face.
"Sort of?" said Krillin, raising an eyebrow. "I thought anger was the key to your power."
"There's a little more to it than that, isn't there?"
All three of them jumped at the sound of his voice. Cell was leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest.
"Oh great," groaned Jeice. Krillin gave Cell a damning look - the last time they saw him before today, he was laying into Gohan pretty harshly.
"I don't know," said Gohan, pacing anxiously.
"Do you ever think about it?" asked Cell curiously.
"About what?"
"That day. Do you ever think about it?"
"No... " he admitted.
"Well it's no wonder you can't transform if you've completely repressed those memories."
"I try not to think about it, but when I do... " Gohan's voice began to tremble. "It's just those few seconds where my dad is in front of me, and then he's gone."
"Gohan... " sighed Krillin sympathetically. "I should have been there... I'm sorry."
"If we're all training hard, is there any reason for you to need to transform?" asked Jeice, not wanting to push him any further.
"But what if me being stuck is enough for Frieza to win?"
The three of them sighed, Gohan finally stopped pacing and settled against the nearest wall.
"I have an idea, but I don't think you'll like it," said Cell from the doorway.
"If it involves me being tortured again... " quipped Krillin.
"Sadly, no," he sneered. "I can help you draw those memories out."
"I really don't want you crawling around in my head," said Gohan, his eyes on the ceiling.
"These two can stick around to anchor you if you want."
"Anchor... huh?" Jeice pulled a peculiar face at them both.
"He just means be here in case I freak out," Gohan clarified.
"Are we doing this, then?" asked Cell.
"I don't trust you."
"Then you're smart."
Gohan took a deep sigh, then turned his head to finally look at him.
"Fine. It's not like we have any other options right now."
He pushed himself off the wall and sat himself down on the sofa, legs crossed. Cell grabbed one of the folded chairs from the other side of the room and set it up directly in front of Gohan.
"You two find somewhere to sit nearby, try not to talk," he said, eyeing Jeice in particular. Cell was in front of Gohan, Krillin and Jeice parked adjacent to either side of him, the four of them in a circle. "Ready to relive the worst day of your life?"
"As I'll ever be," sighed Gohan, closing his eyes. "Where are we starting?"
"Your father just threw you into the ring with me."
Gohan could just about see it with Cell's own memories helping him draw out his own. He was powered up, ready to fight. Cell quickly gained the upper hand on him, and after while, Gohan was talking to him about the nature of his power.
"Do you remember what you said to me then?"
"About my powers?" Gohan's eyes were still closed.
"You said it came from your anger, that something snaps in your head."
"I think so?"
"You're not so sure now, are you?"
Gohan's power did indeed come from a place of anger, but also something else. His memories of the times before that when it came out were often fuzzy. Then he physically jumped when the memory of Cell's fist connecting with his face after their talk suddenly made an appearance. Krillin was about to interrupt when Gohan laughed a little.
"You really were a sadistic prick, weren't you?"
Android 16 came in, his self destruct failed and Cell promptly destroyed his body. Gohan could remember the sounds of metal and the unpleasant smell of burning wires. Then came the torture of his father and friends...
"Let it play out," said Cell. Gohan's breathing became panicked. "Breathe."
Android 16 was speaking to him, he was hanging onto every word so much that he didn't hear Cell approaching. Then 16 was crushed under his foot suddenly.
"And now you're transforming."
Gohan squeezed his eyes shut tighter.
"What does it feel like?"
"Anger... "
"And... "
Gohan was reliving it, the earth trembling at his feet, electricity crackling around him.
"Falling."
Jeice and Krillin looked across at each other, fascinated by how Cell was able to help Gohan navigate some of his most painful memories.
"No... "
Gohan saw nothing but black, that endless feeling of falling into nothingness was terrifying.
"Stop... stop it!" he cried desperately. He was panicking.
"I'm not doing anything," said Cell. He really wasn't, he'd left him as soon as he said no. He gestured towards Jeice who immediately reached over to put his hand on Gohan's shoulder.
"Gohan?"
"What's happening to him?" asked Krillin.
"He's having a flashback."
Gohan's eyes snapped open again. He was gasping for air as he grabbed hold of Jeice's hand, that was shaking him by the shoulder.
"You alright, kid?"
"Yeah," he panted. "Fuck... " His face fell into his hands as he composed himself again. Krillin couldn't believe how traumatised Gohan was by his fight with Cell. "That was like being held underwater."
"Did you find it? That feeling?" asked Cell, not wanting Gohan to deter too much.
"I don't know... that didn't feel like all of it."
"What do you mean?"
"I was transforming but I wasn't... there yet."
"Ready to dive back in then?"
"Okay," he said reluctantly, closing his eyes again.
Cell was right there with him as soon as the memories came back. However...
"You've skipped ahead."
"Huh?"
Gohan was looking at his father, his hand on Cell in his second form, telling him to take care of his mother.
"Go back to when you were transforming."
Gohan went back to that falling, sinking, almost drowning feeling. But then it all faded away and his father was stood in front of him again.
"Stop skipping over it."
"I'm not... that's how I remember it."
Gohan opened his eyes again. Cell stared at him, confused.
"What's going on?" asked Krillin.
"You were there, Krillin," said Cell, looking over at him. "After he transformed and before Goku died, we fought for quite a while."
"Well... yeah." Krillin tried not to make a remark that probably would have earned him a punch in the face; it was less fighting, and more Gohan wiping the floor with him. Cell needed to investigate further.
"May I?" Cell held his hands out to Gohan.
"What? You don't believe me?"
"I didn't say that, but maybe you've repressed it so much that I need to go and look for it."
Gohan sighed, frustrated at having someone dig around in his brain. He put his hands into Cell's, physical contact helping the android connect to him better. They both closed their eyes for a few moments before coming back again.
"Huh... that is odd."
"What is?"
"I can't find it. That part of the fight. It's gone."
From the point Gohan achieved his new form up until his father appeared in front of him about to die, there was no sign of it in Gohan's memories.
"Or it's locked away somewhere," said Jeice.
"Or... it was never there at all," suggested Cell. The other three fighters looked at him, confused. "Let's carry on. After Goku died, what do you remember?"
"Just grief and guilt. I guess that's what stayed with me. Then you came back and killed Trunks. Then after that it's kinda fuzzy."
"Do you remember this?" Cell pointed at the scar still visible on his left shoulder. Gohan lifted his arm to look down at it for a moment.
"Yeah."
"So that's where it came from," mumbled Jeice, always meaning to ask.
"You remember it clearly?"
"Do I remember throwing myself in between Vegeta and one of your attacks? Yes! It burned like hell and I remember feeling my arm break," snapped Gohan, putting his hand on his upper arm as if he could physically feel the bone going again.
"Then what?" Cell wasn't at all phased by Gohan's short temper these days, pressing forwards. "Do you remember killing me?"
"It's... fuzzy."
"Fuzzy how?"
"I just remember it being loud and bright. My dad was speaking to me. I was there but I wasn't."
Cell smiled curiously, catching onto the problem.
"When did you say you first split?"
"Split?" asked Jeice.
"Oh, does this all have to come out now?" groaned Gohan, rolling his eyes.
"Looks that way."
"Will you just tell us what's going on?" said Krillin.
"Gohan has an evil twin."
"Oh, fuck you," sighed Gohan.
"Uh... what?" Jeice scratched his head. "Where?"
"You can't see him, he lives in Gohan's head. He comes out to play now and again."
"You're really not helping me right now," said Gohan.
"Well you explain it then," said Jeice.
"I think I have a split personality."
"You don't think it, you absolutely do," remarked Cell. Jeice and Krillin just listened, too stunned to say much.
"There's another person in my head. He's the saiyan part of me. We used to be whole and at some point recently, we split apart."
"You say recently... I think it happened that day seven years ago."
"What?!"
"You don't remember fighting me after you transformed because you weren't there. There are gaps in your memory."
"Shit... " Gohan's eyes widened as everything made sense for the first time - his saiyan half split off from him for the first time when he ascended, but he'd repressed the memories of that day so much that it remained dormant inside his head for years.
"Last week, you woke up with no memory of how we got from the lookout to here, right? Your saiyan half was driving that whole time. And that's what happened during our fight."
"And that's why everything else feels so fuzzy toward the end, it's like we were both fighting for control... but why did he disappear for seven years? Why has he come back out now?"
"It would take a trigger, an event of sorts. When did he start showing up again?"
"He didn't start fronting until we were at the warehouse, but I started dreaming about him when I was in hell." The penny dropped at that moment. "Killing myself drew him out again... "
"Looks that way."
"As... eye opening as all this is," said Jeice tentatively from his chair. "How does this help you break that barrier again?"
"That's the thing... I can't!" said Gohan frantically. "I was never the one who did it in the first place!" This was only serving to lower his self confidence even further. He had a deep reserve of power within him, but he didn't have the key to it. He felt as if he was being held hostage by his own brain.
"You know what the solution is. I'll be outside when you're ready."
Cell got up and promptly left, leaving the three of them alone in the room.
"You know, before we left the lookout... there was something... off about you," said Krillin carefully.
"What he means to say is, you were bit of a dick," joked Jeice, winking at Gohan. Gohan just smiled back.
"I can only apologise on behalf of my alter," he said, feeling strange that he was able to talk about the inner workings of his brain so freely with his friends. "He isn't dangerous, he's just abrasive and over confident."
"So basically Vegeta," quipped Jeice.
"What did Cell mean? He said that he's waiting for you. What's he gonna do?" asked Krillin.
"My saiyan half usually comes out whenever he feels like it, which isn't often. I guess because he's gotten used to the back seat he's been taking for the past few years. But I've found that there's a way to force a switch."
"And that is?"
"We have a kind of system. I host our body most of the time, but I also hurt it. And the saiyan protects it." Gohan paused for a moment; Krillin and Jeice weren't going to like this. "I have to be in a life threatening situation to force him out."
"Wait... no! There has to be a better way!"
"He's gonna fucking annihilate you, kid!"
"Maybe... but maybe not. But at the very least if he does, then I won't stay dead for very long."
Gohan intended for that to be a dark joke, but they weren't laughing. He decided that it was now or never. He stood up, composed himself, and walked back outside.
It was safe to say that he was terrified, but Cell was there, leaning against the wall watching Goku and Trunks sparring, Vegeta keeping at a distance to observe - and rip to shreds - his son's technique.
"We doing this, then?" asked Gohan. Krillin and Jeice soon joined them.
"You might want to warn people what's about to happen, it's not going to be pretty," said Cell, pushing himself off the wall and entering the training field.
"This is going to be horrible, isn't it?" asked Krillin.
"Stay or go, but tell people first. They can't interfere or it won't work."
Krillin and Jeice ushered everyone to the side lines, everyone getting the message when they saw Gohan and Cell take to the field. Gohan was thankful that his mother was elsewhere taking care of the kids - he didn't want her to see this. Cell was going to fight extremely dirty.
"What do you mean don't interfere?" asked Goku, not liking the sound of it. Krillin didn't know how to answer, but Vegeta soon understood what was about to happen.
"This is going to get ugly, isn't it?"
"What?! But that didn't work seven years ago," said Piccolo. "It was watching us being hurt that did it."
"There's more to it than that now," said Krillin. "It's hard to explain, but Gohan's just told us why he was acting so weird at the lookout."
"What was it?"
"There's... two of him," said Jeice. The Ginyus and the rest of the fighters huddled in as Gohan transformed into a super saiyan and readied himself. "When we were inside just now, Cell helped him run through what happened the first time he transformed. He had to help him draw out the memory of it, he'd been so traumatised by the fight, that he'd repressed most of it."
They remained silent, waiting for him to continue.
"Gohan finally relived the memory of his transformation only to find that he couldn't remember anything after it. There's a huge chunk of that fight missing and the next thing he remembered was Goku dying. When he ascended, something in him snapped, and it wasn't his temper. The human and saiyan parts of his personality broke apart into two separate entities."
"So the Gohan we know wasn't the one who transformed into a level beyond super saiyan," Krillin picked up where Jeice left off. "It was the saiyan personality splitting off and taking over his body, while our Gohan was dormant. That's why he can't transform, it wasn't him!"
"And that explains the change in his temperament," said Vegeta. "He was toying with Cell, torturing him.
"The saiyan part is the key to Gohan's power. The only way to draw him out is to put him in danger."
"And he asked Cell to do it?!" asked Piccolo.
"Exactly, Cell won't hold back like we would," said Goku.
That was a lot to take in for them. They didn't realise that most of Gohan's emotional scars ran so deep, and neither didn't they take into account what he went through when he first fought Cell. After living their lives flying from one fight to another, they never considered the impact that a life like that could have; Gohan had been dragged into some of the most ferocious battles they'd ever seen since the age of 4, and it looked like being thrown into his fight with Cell when he was 11, not to mention the losses he'd experienced, had finally taken it's toll on his mind.
Gohan and Cell had taken to the skies, they could barely follow them, but from what they were able to see, Gohan's performance was rather... lacklustre.
Gohan landed on the ground with a thud, both hands and one knee on the floor to stop himself landing flat on his face. That last knock from Cell was making his body vibrate, and not a good way. The android landed in front of him; he still found that blonde hair and those green eyes a little unnerving at times.
"What the hell was that?" he snarled as Gohan shakily got to his feet again. He threw himself at him again without even thinking. Cell easily stopped him, blocking his onslaught by grabbing both of his wrists. Gohan tried to push him backwards by digging his feet into the ground, but Cell managed to push both Gohan's arms down to his sides until he felt like they were about to be ripped off. Gohan grunted as his arms were pulled on even more.
"Think I could rip you in half like this?" chucked Cell, staring him right in the face.
Gohan retaliated, headbutting him hard. It was enough to knock Cell back, but it was a stupid move as he almost certainly concussed himself. The android grabbed him by the face.
"You want to fight dirty?"
He punched him in the face hard, Gohan tried to return it, but was blocked, and shoved to the ground. A kick to the stomach took his breath away, and another flipped him onto his front. He was dragged up onto his feet, blood leaking from a cut on his lip. Then he felt his arm wrap around his neck. Gohan immediately went into survival mode, attempting to free himself, throwing his shoulders around in an attempt to break his hold.
"You'll have to try harder than that!"
Cell's free hand quickly took his belt off him, then shoved him down onto his knees. Gohan barely had time to catch his breath when his belt was wrapped around his neck. Cell was pulling so hard it immediately squeezed his windpipe tight and started cutting into his skin. Gohan couldn't get his fingers to attempt to release any pressure thanks to the thin fabric. All his friends could hear on the side lines where Gohan's strangled cries.
"No, I can't take this!" said Piccolo.
"Gohan!" cried Goku.
"Cell's going to kill him!" yelled Krillin. The three of them got ready to step in, but Vegeta put his arm out in front of them.
"Just wait!" he said firmly, he could feel something happening.
A few moments later there was an explosion of a white golden light that blew them all backwards. Guldo, Tien and Krillin were instantly knocked out while the rest of them struggled to get back up off the floor to see what that was. The sensed a familiar energy, but it seemed... twisted.
Cell had also been blown back, part of a torn belt in his hand, though he was still just about on his feet. Gohan emerged standing as the bright light dissipated around him, fully powered up, in his ascended for for the first time in seven years.
"There he is," said Cell with a smirk, dropping the belt. "What took you so long?"
Gohan had electricity sparking off him in waves, his hair golden and spikey; his hair tie had burned off. He had a wild look in his green eyes, an intense expression on his face. It was if he was starving for a fight.
"He did it!" said Trunks, hope in his voice.
"Yeah but... it feels different," said Goku.
"It feels wrong," said Vegeta.
Gohan's energy was unstable and distorted. Cell readied himself but visibly flinched when Gohan came flying at him screaming like a wild animal. He barely stood his ground when he blocked the first punch, but the second sent him into the wall of the house. Luckily it hadn't been damaged too much.
Krillin came around slowly after being knocked unconscious, Trunks helping him onto his feet. Cell and Gohan took to the skies again, but they were seeing physical electric shockwaves radiating from Gohan as if his energy was uncontained and bleeding from him every time he made contact.
Cell was the one landing on the ground with a thud this time, bleeding from his nose. Gohan landed in front of him, his shirt hanging off him, not that he seemed to notice. He was panting heavily, they could all feel the rage coming from him. He didn't once take his eyes off Cell. The android blocked a kick, a bolt blasted from the impact and struck Piccolo, sending him through the air. Piccolo was injured, but okay, but Goku was getting extremely worried - Gohan didn't seem to care that Piccolo had been hit. He had no concern over those around him. He was out of control and they were all in danger of getting swept up in his wake.
"He's not stopping," said Vegeta. "He's not holding back at all!"
Gohan and Cell were beating lumps out of each other. Gohan still just about had the upper hand, but his animalistic behaviour was proving to be a major weakness; there was no thought behind anything he was doing, he was attacking on a whim. Cell managed to land a few hits, he was bruised on his arms and stomach, bleeding from his face.
The android saw an opening, catching both his hands. They pushed against each other, so hard that the ground was crumbling around them, the other fighters dodging the odd spark shooting their way from Gohan's aura. Gohan was still growling loudly, but his energy was draining fast; he dropped to one knee.
"Enough! You've lost!" shouted Cell, trying to get through to him.
Gohan suddenly spat in his face. Bloody sputum hitting him right in the eye, in Gohan's dirtiest ever move - the other fighters couldn't believe he'd dealt such a low blow like that. It was enough to break the hold Cell had on him. Wasting no time, Gohan jumped up and went straight for him again.
With incredible force, Gohan's foot collided with Cell's left shoulder, caving it in so hard that came out of it's socket. Cell yelled out loud in agony, he grabbed old of his arm immediately as Gohan landed a safe distance away. The saiyan wasn't laughing, he showed nothing in his face to suggest that he was in any kind of control. There was only rage.
Gohan cupped his hands and drew them back to his hip.
"Guys... " Krillin said nervously.
"He's going to obliterate us all!" cried Vegeta.
"Gohan, stop!" shouted Goku.
They didn't know what to do. Gohan was charging a powerful Kamehameha, so powerful in fact that it would definitely wipe them all out. Cell had no time to fix his dislocated shoulder, bracing himself. The irony wasn't lost on him - he was stood there with only one arm staring at a Kamehameha that was about to vaporise him. It was as if Gohan had subconsciously reversed their roles from their fight all those years ago.
Cell was about to counterattack with his own blast when something unexpected happened...
Gohan stopped dead, his hands clutching his head as he screamed in agony. After a few moments, his form broke. His hair turned black again and he fell to the ground unconscious.
"What happened?" asked Trunks.
"The saiyan half has retreated. He's Gohan again," said Piccolo, Jeice and Burter holding him up.
Goku and Krillin ran over to him, checking if he was okay.
"I think he's just exhausted," said Goku. "Let's take him inside to Bulma."
Goku carried him inside himself, while Jeice, Piccolo and Krillin went over to Cell.
"Not that I care, but... you alright?" asked Jeice tentatively.
Cell was covered in cuts and bruises, just as much as Gohan was. Blood was dripping from his chin.
"Yes," said Cell, irritated.
"You're arm looks broken," said Krillin.
"It's not, it's dislocated."
"Do you want us to get help for that - "
Before Krillin could finish his sentence, the android managed to fix it himself; one swift move and the awful sound of his shoulder snapping into place rang through their ears. He grunted a little as he move his arm around to check it was in properly. There was definitely damage to some of the tendons, he would need to regenerate those, as well as the other injuries to his body.
"Do you need Dende to heal you?" asked Piccolo, reluctant to ask.
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"I don't need your help!" he spat. He sauntered off with a slight limp, clutching his side. Cell's pride had absolutely taken a hit as well.
