Kakarot chased after Lyri as she walked out of the house. “You can’t!”
“I can!” she yelled back at him.
“You don’t even know who you’re up against!” he told her.
“I can take a guess,” she said.
“And if you die in the process again? How do you think we’d feel? How do you think Vegeta would feel knowing you died trying to save him?” Kakarot yelled. Lyri stopped. She stared at the palace.
“I can’t sit back and do nothing,” she told him.
“No one is telling you to,” Kakarot told her, “I’m just asking you to think and not rush in there when we don’t know what happened.”
Lyri tore her eyes from the palace and looked back at Kakarot. “What if it was the person you cared for that was in danger? Would you sit around and do nothing knowing they were hurt? Would you do nothing if you could feel their pain?”
Kakarot sighed. “Fine...I’m coming with you though...” he said, “Stay here. I’m going to tell Bulma where we’re going.”
Lyri watched him leave. She took in her surroundings while she waited. She barely recognized her home village. The houses were cracked or worn down. There were burn marks scattered everywhere. She frowned and turned back to the palace. Whoever did this, and she had a feeling she knew who it was, would pay.
“Ready?” Kakarot asked, walking back up to her. Bardock stood next to his son.
“I’m coming, too,” he said, “This guy is no joke...”
Lyri nodded and they took off. They landed in the capital and lowered kis and crept towards the palace. “I don’t sense him...” she muttered.
Kakarot clicked on his scouter as Bardock said, “He’s in the prison.”
“What?” Kakarot asked.
“I don’t know much. Just that he was thrown in there...” Bardock told them.
Lyri growled and took off. She could hear them complaining behind her but she didn’t care. She reached the side of the palace and slide across the ground, coming to a stop near a small rectangular window at the base of the palace. She peered inside but it was to dark to see anything. “Vegeta?” she asked. There was no response. “Vegeta!” If he was in there he was either too injured to speak or ignoring her. She hoped it was the former and not the latter. “I’m going to get you out...just...” She looked up at the palace. Could she blast through it? She didn’t think she could. And even if she could, it’d alert everyone to what was happening. “I’ll be right back.” She stood up and, after quickly looking around, quietly ran back the way she came. She checked her surroundings again and was about to make a dash inside when she was grabbed.
“What the hells do you think you’re doing? Are you fucking stupid? Weren’t you taught better?”
“Bardock, I have to,” Lyri muttered as she struggled to get free.
“You go in there, you’ll end up either dead or in there with Vegeta. I know that you want to help him, but be smart about this!” Bardock snapped. Lyri stopped struggling and nodded sadly. Bardock kept a hand around her arm as he led the way back. Once they were safely inside his house, he let her go. Lyri shot him a glare as she walked away. “You going in there would have been a suicide mission. You know that.”
“So we just let him sit in there and rot?” she yelled.
“That’s not what I’m saying at all!” Bardock yelled back, “You don’t know who is behind this. You don’t know who did that to him. I’m telling you to fucking think!”
Lyri was silent for a moment. “You right. I don’t know for sure. But I have a suspicion...” She left Bardock, walked down the hall, and stepped into the room where Bulma and Nix’s ki was coming from.
“Everything ok?” Bulma asked. Lyri walked over to the regen tank that held Nix and stared at him. “Lyri?” Bulma asked. Lyri began pressing the buttons on the control panel. “What the hell? What are you doing?”
“I’m draining the damn tank,” Lyri muttered.
“What? No!” Bulma yelled. She ran over to Lyri and tried to pull her away. The Saiyan woman shoved her away. “What the hell is your problem? Nix is fucking hurt and you’re wanting to get him out of there early?”
“It’s not ideal, but yes,” Lyri told her.
Bulma started at her, a look of bewilderment on her face. It quickly contorted into a look that could kill. “Weren’t you just saying a day ago that you hated Nix? And now you want his help to get Vegeta? Do you realize how selfish that is?”
“It’s not just to help get Vegeta!” Lyri snapped, turning to look at her, “Take a look outside! I don’t recognize my home. It’s been through hell and back! The fight that caused this took down Vegeta. There’s few Saiyans that rival Vegeta’s strength. One is sitting in this tank.”
“And what makes you think that Nix is in any condition to fight someone who rivals him?” Bulma yelled, “Instead of expecting someone to take care of your problems, deal with them yourself!”
“Fine,” Lyri seethed. She stormed out of the room. She angrily walked through the house. She pulled her long, white hair up and tied it in a high ponytail. As she stormed out the front door, she noticed Kakarot and Bardock follow her. “I don’t need your help.”
“You are not going back there,” Bardock told her.
“You can’t stop me,” Lyri replied.
“The hell I can’t!” Bardock snapped.
“Stop!” Lyri yelled. She turned to face the man that raised her. “I am going back. I shouldn’t have let you drag me away.”
“And what do you think you can accomplish by going back up there? Vegeta couldn’t take him down, what makes you think you can?” Bardock told her.
“At lease I’m willing to try! Which is more than I can say for anyone else!” Lyri snapped. She turned back towards the palace and flew off.
Meanwhile...Vegeta struggled to open his eyes. He managed to open his right eye. He didn’t know if his other eye was swollen shut or if it had been so injured that he’d gone blind. He tried to move and groaned in pain. He managed to sit himself up and sit against the wall. He surveyed his surroundings. “Heh...” he muttered, stifling a cackle that begged to escape from him. Prison. Vegeta, the great Saiyan prince, imprisoned. It didn’t surprise him in the least. Divine retribution, he supposed. With all of the things he’d done...all the people he’d killed...maybe he deserved to be here.
A familiar ki had him scrambling to his feet. ‘No...’ he thought. Vegeta stumbled to the small window and stood on the tips of his toes to peer out. He couldn’t see her but he could sense her. ‘Stupid bitch...’ he thought angrily. He turned around and stared at the bars of his cell. He had to get out of there before Lyri did something stupid.
Lyri landed and ran inside the palace. She ducked down a darkened hallway and quietly made her way down it. She pressed her back against the wall and peered down the next hall. She took off again when she didn’t see anyone. She located the door that led to the prison and quietly opened it. She ducked inside and closed it behind her. Lyri ran down the stairs. She stopped when she reached the bottom step and looked around the room. She spotted Vegeta in one of the back cells and ran over to him.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Vegeta snapped. He glared at her through the bars but she didn’t notice.
“Saving your ass,” Lyri said as she surveyed the bars. She grabbed the door and jiggled it.
“I don’t need saving,” Vegeta snapped, “I’m not some damsel in distress.”
“Damsel, no,” Lyri agreed. She finally looked at him. “Have to disagree about the distress part.” His glare intensified and she smiled a bit. “Next time I’ll just leave you in here, ok?” When he didn’t react, she inhaled deeply. “Ok, stand back.” She raised her hand and aimed it at the lock. A small ki ball formed in her hand. It was extinguished when she was thrown into the bars of the cell behind her. Vegeta’s yell to watch out was too late. Lyri pushed herself up onto her knees, but a large boot slammed down onto her back. She cried out as she crumbled back down. The boot flew into her stomach causing her to fly the last couple of feet and slam into the back wall of the prison. Lyri scrambled to her feet and fired multiple ki blasts at her attacker. “Take this chance and get out of here!” Vegeta yelled. Lyri didn’t need to be told twice. She ran past the giant man and up the stairs. She wasn’t even get halfway up when a large hand grabbed her ankle. Her attacker tried dragging her back down but ended up getting blasted in the face. His grip on her loosened and she tried scrambling away again. He grabbed her ankle again and pulled her her back down. She twisted around and slammed her boot into his face. He growled and she slammed her boot into his face again. He howled and she slammed her boot into his face again. His roar echoed through the prison and threw her across the room. Her body hit the wall again. Her nails clung to the bricks as she tried to hold herself up. She looked towards her attacker and quickly leapt into the air, hugging the corner where the wall and ceiling met. Her palms pressed into the ceiling as the bright green blast that she avoided hit the wall below her. The room shook and dust clouded her vision. She bit her lip as she scanned the dust cloud. Could she get to the stairs without him noticing? No. She couldn’t. Fine. She’d fight her way out. She flew through the dust and reared her arm back. Her fist never hit him. Though he was big, his speed was incredible. He had sensed her moving towards him and quickly threw a punch. Lyri folded over his large hand, his fist buried in her gut. She involuntarily spat, blood flying out of her mouth. Her attacker raised his other arm and brought his elbow down between her shoulders. Her cries of pain echoed throughout the prison. He grabbed her head in both hands and brought her up to his eye level. She clawed at his hands and kicked and squirmed, trying her damnedest to break free of his tight grip. She glanced into his eyes and saw nothing. Black emptiness. Panic set in and she struggled more. He chuckled deep in his chest and moved his head back before quickly crashing it against her skull. The sickening crack seemed to echo far longer than it actually did. Lyri’s struggling stopped and she was still in his hands. He dropped one of his hands, holding her by her ponytail. He threw her in the cage opposite of Vegeta and slammed the door shut. Lyri hit the wall and fell to the floor.
Bardock paced the living space of his house. ‘Damn her...’ he thought. He was pissed. How dare she! And yet...she was right no one had moved to help Vegeta. And that only pissed him off more. The comm on his scouter clicked on and Paragus’s voice spoke.
“Fellow Saiyans, an attempt to free the traitor king has been made. The offending treasonist has been apprehended and her execution is slated for dawn.”
Bardock growled and threw his scouter across the room. He stormed down the hall and into the room where Nix and Bulma were.
“Bardock?” Bulma asked.
Bardock ignored her. He stormed over to the regen tank and tore the locked lid off. “Get up,” he told Nix. He waited a minute before adding. “Get up or I’ll let your ass down in this fluid.”
Nix pulled the oxygen mask over his head and pulled himself out of the tank. “Let me guess,” he grumbled, “Lyri?” He pushed his wet hair off his face. “Important details?”
“Powerful guy took down Vegeta before you guys came back. He was tossed in prison. Lyri wanted to help. She went up there and hasn’t come back. Paragus just came on over the comm system. She was apprehended and she’s to be executed at dawn,” Bardock quickly explained.
“Never a dull day with her...” Nix muttered. He sighed and said, “Gather up any and all Saiyans we can trust. We’re going to storm the castle and I’m going to distract Broly.”
Though Bardock had questions, he left to gather enough people to help them.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Bulma asked.
“This is a part of my past that hasn’t been properly dealt with,” Nix told her, “I have to do this.”
Lyri could hear Vegeta yelling at her. She couldn’t understand what he was saying. It was fuzzy, like static buzzing in her ears. Her eyes blinked open. Her vision was fuzzy and everything was disoriented. She blinked hard and everything seemed to clear up. She pushed herself up off the floor, hissing as she did. She thought she was in pain before...
“Stop yelling...” she muttered.
Vegeta could feel himself relax a bit. He knew that she wasn’t dead...he would have felt it. Watching her get tossed around like a rag doll angered him. And he hadn’t been able to do anything! He pushed his anger aside and grabbed the door to his cell, shaking it. He eyed the hinges as he shook it again. He had to get them out of there.
“You won’t be able to do anything...” Lyri told him.
Vegeta gave her a questioning look. She tapped her neck. There was nothing on her but...he lightly touched his neck and felt a thin metal. “Tch. Of course. Fucking cowards...” he muttered. He grabbed the collar and tried to pull it off.
“That won’t work,” Lyri told him. She slowly stood.
“Shut up!” Vegeta snapped. He grabbed the collar with both hands and tried again to yank it off.
Lyri quickly walked over to the door of her cell. “I tried that when after I was wished back! That won’t work!”
“Well don’t you just know everything!” Vegeta hissed, still trying to pull the collar off.
Lyri jiggled her door and it slowly open a crack. She pushed it and it fell off its hinges. She quickly walked over the door and over to Vegeta. She shot a ki blast at the lock and the door swayed a bit once the dust cleared. Vegeta stepped out of his cell. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards the stairs. They ran up the steps, Vegeta pulling her along. The door was in his grasp! There was a faint clicking sound and a jolt ran through Vegeta’s body. It started off small, almost like a static shock. But the jolt quickly intensified, becoming more and more painful. Small flashes of lightning licked his neck, all coming off the ki collar. He involuntarily tightened his grip on Lyri’s wrist. He fell to his knees, unable to stand anymore. The electricity coursed through him, immobilizing him. Lyri fell behind him. He could hear the scraping of her nails on the stone steps. ‘Fuck...’ he thought. What the hell was happening? Chuckling floated above them and footsteps descended down towards them. Paragus walked into view. He stared at them before smirking evilly and pushing Vegeta with his boot. Vegeta and Lyri both tumbled down the stairs. Paragus continued down the stairs and stepped over them.
“What do you think of the improvements made to these collars?” he asked, “Much butter than the ones your father had mass produced.” Paragus nudged their arms and kicked Lyri away from Vegeta. “Your whore tried to come to your rescue. Isn’t that sweet?”
Vegeta tried to tell Paragus off but his teeth ground against each other and he couldn’t get anything out.
Paragus turned to Lyri, who was trying to stand. “I don’t know how you survived past your infancy. The former King Vegeta had eradicated every Saiyan that didn’t meet his strict standards.” Lyri glared at him. “No matter...your death is imminent anyway...” Paragus studied her. “I don’t see it. I don’t see what is so special about her that made you forget your father’s teachings. That made you want to abandon everything we had worked for. That made you abandon your people...” Paragus ran a finger down Lyri’s cheek and when she cringed, he grabbed her face. “She’s nothing more than a flaw in the gene pool...I can see maybe using her once but after that...it would have been better to permanently end it.” Lyri growled and spat in his face. Paragus back handed her. He wiped his face and glanced at Vegeta. “Maybe I should show her...” He turned back Lyri and took a step towards her.
“Don’t...you...touch...her...” Vegeta said through gritted teeth.
Paragus ignored Vegeta’s warning and continued towards Lyri. She knew she couldn’t make a run for it...at least not yet. She threw the most powerful ki blast she could muster at Paragus, but because of her prior fight it wasn’t that strong. She quickly tried to run past the older Saiyan but he was able to grab her and slam her into the wall. Lyri growled and squirmed. She could feel the wall scraping the skin on her cheek. She tried in vain to gather ki in her hand, which Paragus had pinned to her back. Paragus noticed the dim yellow glow and snapped the palm of her hand in half. Lyri’s screams echoed through the prison. She felt his hand grab the waistband of her shorts and she frantically struggled to get away. There was a ripping sound, but her pants, for the most part, remained intact. A breeze rushed up her back as the older Saiyan was pulled away from her. There was the sound of ki blasts and the room shook. Lyri hesitated before looking behind her. Vegeta stood with his back to her. He was breathing heavily, staring down at the charred remains of Paragus. Lyri walked over to the blonde Saiyan. She guessed he had managed to obtain the transformation while she had been dead. He was visibly shaking.
“Vegeta...” she said.
“This...everything...has been because of you...” Vegeta muttered.
“What?” Lyri asked. She frowned. Was he seriously blaming her for everything.
“Everything that has happened has been because of you,” Vegeta told her. His voice was cold. He turned to look at her and she noticed his eyes were darker than normal. She wasn’t sure if the Vegeta she knew was there anymore.
She shook her head. “You’re wrong,” she told him.
“Am I?” Vegeta asked stepping towards her. She back away from him.
“You are,” Lyri told him.
“Four dead Saiyans...our planet in ruins...I was not able to take my throne because of you!” he snapped.
Lyri growled. “If you want anyone to blame, take a look in the fucking mirror. You wanted to play the politics. You didn’t want to start a war even though I told you that going the political route was the wrong choice! So, no, it’s because of you that everything happened.”
“I should have left your ass rotting in the ground,” Vegeta yelled.
Pain clouded Lyri’s eyes. The palace shook violently, making dust rain from the ceiling. There were shouts and screams from above and yet the two stood staring at each other as if a war was not going on above their heads.
