“You don’t mean that...” Lyri told him. A deep ache filled her chest. It wasn’t from the beating she had gotten. It was like her heart was failing.
“I do,” Vegeta told her.
Lyri tried to read his face, hoping this was just some fucked up joke. But he wasn’t the type to joke. Anger bubbled inside her. How could he say that? “Fuck you,” she snarled, “I should have never agreed to help you. Everything would have been fine. I would have been fine. I wouldn’t have died-“
Vegeta cut her off. “Yes you would have. I would have made sure of it because you are and have always been a liability.”
The ache in her chest exploded. A burning sensation coursed through her.
“Heh...finally,” Vegeta said, “I’m not bound to you anymore.”
The palace shook again. Dust fell from the ceiling again and when it cleared, Lyri was gone. Vegeta growled and climbed the stairs two at a time. Lyri was no where to be seen. Pushing her out of his mind, he flew towards the fight that was making the palace shake.
Lyri ran through the palace. The way she had come in was blocked by debris. She wanted to ignore the fighting going on around her and only get herself out, but she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if they turned up injured later. “Hey!” she yelled. Everyone ignored her. What the hell were they fighting about anyway. “Hey!” Nothing. She growled and smashed her good hand into the cracked wall next to her. The cracks spiderwebbed up the wall and a slab of ceiling fell. Most were able to dodge the slab. They turned to glared at her. “The palace is crumbling around you and you want to stand there and fight amongst yourselves? What the hells is wrong with you? Get the injured and get out while you can, you idiots!” She watched as they grabbed those that had been crushed and run out. Lyri continued on her way. She was closing in on an exit, it was so close. The palace shook again, large green ki blasts hit the wall behind her. Lyri jumped out the way of the blasts. She landed on her stomach and was in the process of getting up when she heard the loud cracking above her head. She only had time to look up before larger chunks of the palace fell on her.
Nix skidded across the sand. He panted, out of breath. He had to put a stop to this, now. He had tried reasoning with Broly, but at the moment, Broly was too far gone. He saw Vegeta steady himself out of the corner of his eyes. The two flew towards the rampaging Broly. Nix elbowed Vegeta our of his way. “Our of my way!” he snapped. Nix focused his ki into his fist. As he flew towards Broly, he reared his glowing blue fist. His fist collided with Broly’s cheek and sent him flying. Nix quickly teleported to him and ki punched him again. Broly went hit the palace, causing more debris to fall. Nix quickly gather ki for an attack and shot it at the slightly stunned Saiyan. Another attack joined his, he guessed from Vegeta. The attacks hit Broly, forcing him further into the palace. The ground shook from the attacks and more of the palace collapsed, encasing Broly. It was quiet as everyone waited to see if that was it.
“It’s not over...” Vegeta said, “He’s still alive...”
Broly exploded out of the rubble. He flew towards Vegeta and punched him, nearly knocking the Saiyan prince out. Nix blasted Broly, sending him away from the palace. “Let’s hope this works...” Nix said to himself as he began gathering ki for a large attack. Broly charged towards Nix, not giving a damn about the attack that Nix was preparing. Nix released the attack, the force of the blast sent Broly into the ground. Sand flew up and rained back down slowly. While the smoke and dust was clearing, Vegeta stormed past Nix angrily. Vegeta stared down at the unconscious Broly, readying an attack to finish what Nix had left unfinished. He was about to fire the attack when Nix teleported between Broly and Vegeta.
“Try it and you’ll be dead before that blast leaves your fingertips,” Nix snarled.
“You’re defending the monster that did this?” Vegeta snapped, gesturing to the ruined planet behind him.
“I’m looking at the monster who failed to prevent it,” Nix replied coldly. Vegeta growled. “I can not in good conscience kill him just because his brain chemistry is different than ours. We both know someone who would have an issue with that...” Nix’s eyes flicked over to the palace and the Saiyans who had started to gather around the rubble. “Speaking of Lyri...” Vegeta growled in response.
Kakarot landed in front of them. He looked frantically between them. “She’s not with you?”
“Do you see her, dumbass?” Vegeta snapped.
“I can’t find her. I can’t sense her. Vegeta, tell me she’s ok!” Kakarot pleaded.
“How the hell would I know?” Vegeta said angrily, crossing his arms over his chest.
Kakarot opened his mouth to yell at Vegeta when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned and looked at the Saiyan who wanted his attention.
“You’re looking for the one with the white hair? Last I saw she was yelling at us to get out of the palace. We barely made it out before that part of it fell. It’s possible that she’s stuck inside.”
“Kakarot, calm down! If you’d quit panicking, you’d be able to sense her. She’s injured and we need to find her sooner rather than later,” Nix said. He called over a couple Saiyans. “Take Broly to medical and have them sedate him for now.” Nix motioned for Kakarot to follow him. Vegeta followed closely behind them.
“Where the hell do you expect them to take that...thing? The palace is fucking destroyed,” Vegeta said.
“It looks like only part of it has collapsed. If they can’t tell which areas are unstable, that’s on them. And if it’s too unstable for them to get to medical, I’d hope they’re smart enough to find a medic and take him to one of the many regen tanks on this planet. And he’s not a monster,” Nix told him.
Vegeta grumbled. The trio reached the rubble of the palace and stared at it. Saiyans were already moving the rubble out of the way and digging people out. Nix and Kakarot joined them while Vegeta hung back. At this moment, his pride and anger got the better of him and he didn’t move to help.
With the other Saiyans helping them, Kakarot and Nix were able to quickly dig through the rubble. Lyri was found by one of the helping Saiyans. He alerted Kakarot and Nix. Nix took Lyri into his arms and teleported away. He arrived in Bardock’s home and walked to the room that contained the regen tank. He glanced it over to make sure it still worked after Bardock had ripped it’s lid off. It seemed fine and he placed Lyri in the tank and adjusted the oxy mask over her mouth and nose.
“What happened?” Bulma asked, walking into the room.
“The palace collapsed,” Nix said putting the lid on the regen tank and turning it on.
“She going to be ok?” Bulma asked.
“She’ll be fine,” he told her.
“And you? Are you ok?” she asked. Nix shrugged. “Sit down. You look like crap.”
“Gee, thanks,” Nix muttered as he sat on the floor. He leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes. Bulma sat next to him. She wanted to ask what happened, but it could wait. They sat in silence, the only noise coming from the hum of the regen tank. The sound of boots echoed in the hall outside the door. The door squeaked open and the sound echoed in the room. “She’ll be fine,” Nix said without opening his eyes.
“Yeah...” Kakarot muttered. He stared at his adopted sister and sighed. He turned to Nix. “You look like shit. You should hit a regen tank.”
“I’m fine,” Nix told him, “I’ll heal up later.” He finally looked at Kakarot. “Did Broly get taken care of?”
“Yeah,” Kakarot told him, “The medical wing in the palace was ruined. But we were able to sedate him and get him in a regen tank in the barracks. Vegeta kept trying to finish Broly against you orders, though.”
“Of fucking course he did,” Nix muttered. He teleported to Vegeta. They stood at the entrance to the village, staring each other down. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Seeing Nix angered Vegeta and he went Super Saiyan. Nix closed the last couple of steps between then and glared down at his half brother. “I don’t have time to deal with your pathetic ass,” Nix snarled. Vegeta growled through gritted teeth, trying to hold on to his transformation. A punch sent Vegeta flying backwards. He was sent back towards the village with a kick to his back. He slid along the dirt. The golden glow around him vanished. He was unable to retain his transformation. Vegeta went to stand but Nix grabbed the front of his armor and held him at eye level. “You are a raging moron. This could have all been avoided if you had stopped to think for one minute. You, just like your father before you, are an unfit king. You are not welcome back at the palace. You’re lucky I don’t outright banish you off planet,” Nix told him.
“You can’t banish me. You have no right!” Vegeta snarled.
Nix dropped Vegeta on his ass. “I took your throne from our father. I have just as much, if not more of a right than you.” Nix smirked at the look on Vegeta’s face. “Guess you didn’t know. Not that it’s important now.” Nix looked away from Vegeta towards the palace. “If you try anything else, I’ll charge you as an accessory to father’s crimes. I’m going to help my people rebuild. Stay out of my sight.” Nix started walking away but stopped and added, “And another thing. Stay away from Lyri. She’s been through enough because of you.” Nix left leaving Vegeta alone.
He stood, grumbling to himself. Vegeta thought about going back to the palace just to spite Nix but he knew he didn’t have the energy in him to fight. He looked around. He knew no one here and he doubted that anyone would let him stay. He could just take a place from someone but, he’d probably have to deal with Nix if that happened. He started walking. Vegeta’s feet carried him past the last house and into the desert. He wandered over to a rocky outcrop. He sat down, leaning against it. The wind picked up, blowing sand across his boots. Vegeta breathed as deep as he could. He was beyond pissed. He had been banished and his people had turned their back on him. He was cold and alone. After everything that had happened...after everything he had done... Vegeta growled. His fist hit the sand. He hadn’t done anything! He had tried but didn’t do anything. Everything he had done was for nothing. He hadn’t done anything... The wind continued to blow as the Saiyan prince sat in the dark, cold and alone.
