Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Thirty-three
You leaned off of a railing as you stared out at the city. Your stomach churned as you thought about everything you’d told them. You’d only meant to tell Gohan but the kid halfling, Trunks, overheard most of not all your story. He had found it neat. You did not. And while you had told them most things you did not tell tell them everything.
You did not tell them about how playful it had been; how you used to play games with Goku to pass the time when you and he were looking for the balls. You did not tell them how safe and at peace you felt in his arms while riding atop of Nimbus. Or at any other times really. You did not tell them about his curious mind or how awkward and embarrassed you were to answer all of his questions. You did not tell them the intimate way that he started to teach you about how to use your ki. Nor did you tell them about sleeping next to him, often in his arms, even when you didn’t have to. Or how you always woke up knowing that, that felt right. You did not explain the look in his eyes when he saw another man’s hands on you or the shiver that him claiming possession caused. Nor the night that followed. Or about the realization of how igniting his lust happened. And you definitely hadn’t told them about being married before what was effectively the god of Earth. Not to mention you left out quite a big part of it that even you had a hard time facing.
With all of that omitted it felt like you were somehow lying to them. You didn’t like that feeling. But for Gohan’s and his brother’s sake you had to. They were innocent in all of this mess. Gohan might be like your age, or so it felt, but Goten was just a little child. You didn’t want to break his home up.
It didn’t matter that Goku wasn’t alive anymore, that he wasn’t a physical presence. It was the spirit of him, the symbol, that you didn’t want to tarnish in their eyes. You might be pissed at him because it was easier than the alternative. But even at your worst you didn’t want to ruin what he built. He deserved to have his family and have them happy…
Besides the math wasn’t on your side. It was your own personal emotions or the happiness of, at minimum, 3 people.
“Are you okay?” Gohan asked as he moved next to you.
“Fine,” you answered half heartedly.
“You don’t look fine, you look sad,” the teenager pointed out, hands resting on the railing.
“I just...missed so much. It’s hard. It felt like one minute and everything changed. I’m just...having a hard time rectifying everything in my head. There’s so much to learn about this scary new side of the world. So much to learn about myself. And…”
You stopped yourself. It was selfish to say that you wanted Goku back in present company. Gohan was his son for gosh sakes. You’d only spent like maybe a third of a year with the man. Gohan had spent his early childhood with Goku. And not only that but to him he’d been dead a lot longer than he had been to you.
“You miss him,” Gohan said quietly.
You didn’t have to look at him to know that he had an understanding expression. You nodded and leaned forward, rocking on the heels of your feet.
“Until I got back to Earth...my best friend was still alive. I got here and poof, gone. And that wasn’t the half of all the changes.”
Gohan nodded in understanding as he remained beside you. He understood exactly how you felt. Or at least he thought he did. He had no idea what he and his family really did to complicate the torrent of negative emotions churning inside of you. He had no idea about the shocking pain that raced through you when you saw Goten clinging to Chichi's legs the first night you got back to Earth.
“I think I get it. Some days it feels like he’ll just show up again. Like he had never died,” Gohan confided in you. “He’s done that before you know. We though he died and were about to wish him back. But turned out he was on Yardrats doing special training. In some ways it still feels like that’s what might be happening. That he’s just gone out to train again. He always went away when he wanted to train. Which was most of my childhood I guess. But he always came home. So it just feels like one day he’ll just...come home again.”
You turned your head to look at Gohan, resting the side of your head on one of your arms as you continued to lean down. "He kept leaving to go train?"
That wasn't how you knew him. Any time he had to train and exercise he spent doing just that, sure. But you'd never experienced him going away to do that. At least no farther than the space he needed to do it. Once you started traveling with him to collect the Dragonballs, Goku rarely went away for more than an hour. At least right up till the end when he went off on his own to find the last two balls. But you didn't really count that as going away to train.
"Yeah," Gohan said in a fond tone. "I remember he'd be gone for days at a time when I was really young. But whenever he'd come back he'd bring back something. A lot of the time it was a big fish. And when mom let me have a break from studying he'd tell me stories about what he'd been doing."
"Huh," you breathed out, turning your head back to rest on the metal poll.
"What? What's wrong with that?"
"I was with him for about...uh...four months? Something like that. The longest he went away was maybe an hour or two. Max three if something was going on. Unless you count that last week when I just physically couldn't move anymore. And if he wanted to train he just did it right in front of me."
Gohan made a sound of surprise. You wondered if it was the right thing to tell him. Suddenly you realized that might sound shocking to him. Or maybe hurtful. You'd only known him for a short time compared to his own family but...it seemed like you'd seen a lot more of him in such a short amount of time.
"Maybe he just didn't want to interrupt your studies because he knew they were important to you?" You said, though it really sounded more like a question.
"I guess. I never thought dad really cared about me studying. But I guess you're right, he never really stopped mom from pushing me to study hard."
Okay, hopefully that worked. Or maybe, between the months that you'd disappear and he had a family, he changed a lot. For all you knew he could have been a completely different person when he died. You weren't sure if that would make it better or worse…
"Hey, Gohan, what was the name of that girl that was following you around again?" Bulma interrupted the reflective moment, puffing out some cigarette smoke.
Gohan quickly turned to look behind him in surprise to see Bulma. "Videl. Why? She's not here is she?"
"No, she's back in Satan City. But she's on the news. She's on top of a burning building. Apparently there are a bunch of people up there with no way off. The thing looks like it's going to collapse."
Gohan looked like he was about to freak out. He looked at you nervously. You stood up slowly and waved him off.
"Go be a hero, I'll get back home no problem."
Which was true, you could easily just get to your studio the moment he left. You'd have offered to take him with you so it was pretty much instant. However, it was really dangerous and tricky to transmit yourself somewhere you'd never been before. At least without having an energy signature to lock onto. That's why you'd transmitted yourself to Goku's house in the mountains when you first got there - you knew the area enough to know that you weren't likely to end up right in the middle of someone else's body. Although considering that he had a family...you'd gotten lucky. You doubted you'd have the same lucky with a burning building.
The look on his face was sheer panic, however. You knew that in this situation even the two minutes that it would take to get back to the city could be a life or death situation.
"Gohan, Wait," You called out as you watched him tense up.
"What?" he asked in a slightly agitated voice.
You reached for his hand and concentrated. You might not be able to take him to the burning building safely but you could get him to the city at least. Gohan instantly took your hand and the moment that he did, you and he popped out of existance. Which left a very surprised and bemused Bulma behind.
When you reentered the world, you were on the top of your apartment building. And from the looks of it the one on fire wasn't too far away.
"Okay, now go be a hero," you said rather quickly, instinctively pointing to the building on fire despite the fact that he could see it.
"Thanks," he called back to you as he took to the sky.
You waved, though he couldn't see it, as he flew off. And in the middle of his flight you watched as his dorky outfit popped out. Though, granted, with a few adjustments it wouldn't look as stupid. Maybe you should talk to him about that costume too…
...then again he really seemed to love it. So why mess with something he liked so much?
