Febuary: The Truth Comes Out

Tuesday, Feb. 25th

Sometime Friday, my mask cracked. The cheery, friendly, all-together guy I pretend to be melted into a little puddle of goo, and sometime in the afternoon I broke down with only the fish to witness my tears, and they didn\'t seem to notice much. Fish aren\'t the most sympathetic of pets.
I think I cried at my desk for an hour before Lucy came in to check on me. I think she knew what was going on, because she had tea and a chocolate doughnut in hand when she entered to room. Some people are just more observant then others. Sind ind of rambled on for a little bit about a conversation that happened between my father and Milliardo in the hallway, basically to tell me Dad had gone home for the day. She can recite conversations back word for word, at length, but something about her just talking helped. She didn\'t try to hold me or console me, just let me eat my doughnut and drink my tea while she rattled on. Did I men thn that I liked her?
Knowing that I wasn\'t about to get any more work done that day, I told her that I was going home early and if she didn\'t have anything else to do, she could have the afternoon off, paid. I know, I\'m a good boss.
The weekend went by quickly, mostly because Trowa showed up on Friday with dinner. Seems Lucy called him and told him I\'d need something nice. Nice was Pad-Tai and Thai Iced Tea [1]. I have the world\'s greatest boyfriend.
After dinner eld eld me and asked what was wrong, so I told him the whole thing about Duo and the position. He suggested that I ask Duo about it first, before I made the decision for him. Then he asked me to go to the movies with him on Sunday. How could I refuse such a lovely offer?
The bad part about Trowa\'s wonderful advice was I didn\'t get a chance to put the plan into action. Duo was with Heero all weekend with the phone off, and yesterday I was in meetings all day. Literally all day. So when he stormed into my office this morning, I realized that it was way too late to give him the offer.
\"You fucking bastard! What the fuck is this?\" At least I think those were his exact words as he stormed right into my office and threw the memo onto my desk. After I quickly read it, I realized that it basically said that Duo, and only Duo, was going to lose his job in the research department.
\"I honestly have no idea Duo.\" And I didn\'t. This didn\'t come from me, but higher up.
\"Well you should know. Don\'t you run the place?\"
\"Not yet. My Dad still holds all the power.\"
nd wnd why would your Dad do this? I thought he liked me.\" That\'s when I realized what was going on.
\"He\'s trying to force my hand.\"
\"What!?!\" Yeah I\'d be mad too. Especially if I was about to lose my job because of a feud between my best friend and his dad. Of course that\'s when said parent decided to join the discussion.
\"Duo my boy,\" Dad said draping his arm around my friend\'s shoulders and steering him to a chair, \"glad to see you up here. I suppose Quatre\'s been talking to you about our little deal?\"
\"What deal?\" Yup, there it was. The Shinigami snarl. Dad knew this mood, lord knows I\'ve told him about it enough.
\"Well, we believe your talents are going to waste down there in the labs.\"
\"And so you\'re laying me off?\"
\"Not exactly.\" I had to add something to the conversation so that I wouldn\'t feel useless.
This was partly my faulywayyway. Of course my two word comment got a nice long glare from my friend.
\"What Quatre means is, if you\'re interested, there\'s another position open to you.\" That\'s my dad, the smooth talker.
\"Doing what?\"
\"Well, Quatre\'s going to be taking everything over soon and he\'ll need someone around to keep him level, make sure he takes a lunch break, goes home at the end of the day, doesn\'t give himself an ulcer.\"
\"Basically do Doris\' job?\"
\"Exactly, except for Quatre.\"
\"\'Kay.\"
\"So, what do you say, Duo? Would you like to work up here on the 32nd floor?\"
\"I just said \'kay, didn\'t I?\" Leave it to Duo to make my father look silly. \"Just one question?\"
\"Which is?\"
\"Do I get an office?\"
\"Of course.\"
\"Cool. So should I start to move my stuff?\" After all this time, my father finally looked over at me.
\"Why don\'t you stay up here for a while and chat with Quatre. I\'m sure you two have a lot to talk about.\" With that he left us alone. Well except for the fish, but they\'re apathetic.
\"I\'m sorry,\" I said. I really did feel bad for everything. Now he\'s trapped in a desk job, and it\'s all my fault.
\"For what?\"
\"Well now you\'re going to be trapped in this job and…\"
\"Hey, Q. Did you ever think that I might want something like this? I mean this is a respectable job, one that Howard\'s going to really proud of, so will Heero, so it\'s not like I\'m not gonna want it. Besides, I can\'t be trapped if I getta work with you. I just kinda wish you asked me yourself.\"
\"I was going to, but Dad beat me to it.\"
\"\'Kay. He\'s good at that.\" We talked for while after that, until Doris took him away to start his training.
Dad suggested that we both go furniture/clothes shopping with petty cash to get Duo properly outfitted. We\'re leaving in twenty minutes. I can\'t wait. Work is going to be great if I get to do this all the time. I\'ll probably not end up crying in the office anymore, or if I do then Duo will be here to make it all better, and here I was worrying about this.

1. For those of you that have never had Thai food before, Pad Tai is a noodle dish usually made with Chicken, shrimp, and tofu. It\'s kind of sweet, because of the rice noodles, and a little spicy. Thai Iced Tea is a sweet, heavy tea with half-and-half floated on top. Unusually strong, but very good and potent. They use caffeinated black tea, so be prepared for a sugar and caffeine rush. These are what I\'ll want when I crave Thai food. That or Thai Iced Coffee (same as the tea but only with super strong coffee.)
