Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Thirty-six
Goten’s eyes opened up, confused about where he was. There was wind moving all around him, pushing him into something firm and familiar. Drowsily he looked up to see his brother’s face. They were flying on Nimbus.
“Gohan?”
“Hey squirt. Have a good day?”
Goten smiled, the expression sloppy and cut short when he yawned. “Yeah.”
“I’m glad. You were a good boy for her, weren’t you Goten?”
Goten nodded as he curled his face into his brother’s chest to get it away from the wind. While he normally liked flying with his brother, he was sleepy. The wind made it hard to keep his eyes fully closed. Though considering that it was dark that wasn’t as much of an issue as it would have been in the day time.
“Uh uh, I remember what you said big brother.”
“That’s good. Thanks. And remember, if you want me to teach you how to fly...just let mom think you were out training, okay?”
“But I was training,” Goten insisted in a mumbled, sleepy voice. “We all trained together. She took me to Trunks’ house and we raced each other, and tried to catch each other. “
Gohan was both sad and happy over what his brother had told him. His younger brother didn’t have many friends his own age that weren’t dinosaurs. The only one Gohan knew about was Trunks. So it was kind of sad that Goten thought playing something like Tag was training. Not that it couldn’t be, Gohan reasoned as they neared their home. But Goten should have thought of it more like playing. What kind of childhood would he have if he thought all games were just someone trying to train him? So while Gohan was happy that Goten had a nice day he was concerned about the obvious lacking area in his childhood. Then again he really wasn’t one to talk. The closest to a game that Gohan got to play around Goten’s age was Dodge...and that game hurt.
“I’m glad you had fun Goten,” Gohan said with a smile.
Goten murmured something as he drifted off to sleep. Right in time for Gohan to defend from Nimbus and walk into the house.
“You’re late Gohan,” Chichi said tersely.
“Sorry mom,” was his automated response.
Chichi turned around from the stove, looking very out out. Gohan could guess why: dinner. She had a lot of dishes out on the table that looked like they had taken a lot of time and care to prepare. They had since gone cold.
“Sorry doesn’t cut it young man. You both worried me sick when you didn’t come home for dinner. And you know that it was Goten’s bed time an hour ago,” she lectured him, arms crossed and wooden spoon in hand. “And what on Earth is Goten wearing? What happened to his clothes?”
Gohan looked down at Goten. Oops. He wasn’t wearing the Gi that his mother put him in. If Gohan has to guess he was in one of your shirts. The thing was long enough on his brother that it looked like a full night gown. Gohan had overlooked that detail on the way home.
“Uh, his clothes got ruined during training. So Bulma gave us a shirt he could wear home.”
Lies. The guilt already started when he saw the look in his mother’s eyes.
“What were you doing at Bulma’s House Hmm? You were supposed to be training!”
“I was!” Gohan defended himself in muted tones so that he didn't wake up Goten.
“I didn’t let you take time off of school so that you could take Goten on play dates young man! You know how important that prize money is! That’s the only reason I agreed to let you train.”
“I know mom. I’m sorry. I just though Goten should—“
“I’m his mother, Gohan. I decide when he should and shouldn’t do something. Not you. And look, now another one of his outfits are ruined. They don’t grow on trees you know! And it’s not like we’re made of money.”
Gohan bowed his head, taking his mother’s reprimands. He had years of practice knowing just how to keep his mouth closed. What bothered him more was the upset look that Goten got as she talked. He was having a hard time staying asleep.
“Mom, can I go put Goten to bed? Please?”
Gohan watched the indecision on his face from between his eyelashes. He kept his head lowered submissively as he waited for her judgement.
“This isn’t over, Gohan. When you're done putting him to bed, I want you to come back here. We’re going to have a long conversation about responsibility.”
Gohan nodded. “Yes ma’am.”
He hoped the conversation included food. He was hungry.
Later that night, after said conversation (and dinner thank Dende), Gohan went back to the room that he shared with Goten. He wasn’t sure exactly why but he climbed into bed with his little brother and fell asleep that way. There was just a comforting scent around Goten that night that lulled him into a restful sleep.
______________________________
For the next few days, Gohan thought life was going pretty well. Every day he’d wake up early to start to train. Goten would follow him but play mostly by himself. Sometimes he’d have Goten help him in his warm up exercises. Like when he had Goten throw stones at him. Every stone that Goten threw at him lodged itself into the much larger rock that Gohan kept behind him. Which was amazing considering the fact that Goten was so young.
Gohan had even found out that their mom had been training Goten how to fight whenever Gohan was studying. Which was often. Which meant that Goten’s form and reactions were amazing for someone his age. But seeing as their mother, Chichi, was maybe a match for their dad’s power Pre-Raditz, Goten lacked in other areas. Mainly his energy manipulation.
Which Gohan began to address in the afternoons. He and Videl were learning to fly in the afternoons. Gohan knew that Videl was taking half days at school to prepare for the tournament but he couldn’t help but wonder what the city was doing without her when she came to train. He had experienced first hand how reliant the police were on her to stop every form of violent criminal activity. Which the city had a surprisingly lot of as far as he was concerned.
Regardless of that worry, he was happy when he saw the look on her face the first time she got off the ground by herself. And the next day she had even started flying. While she was no where ready to start flying all the way back to Satan City by herself it had definitely been a start. And he had no doubt that it would be a pleasant surprise for whoever got into the ring with her. Which Gohan started to worry might be someone like Vegeta. Oh dear lord he hoped she didn’t face Vegeta. That man barely had the concept of holding back. Videl was strong for normal people but...nowhere near ready to face Vegeta even when he was in a kind mood.
It wasn’t until the fifth day that Goten broke routine as well as the veil of secrecy that they secretly kept up.
“Gohan! I wanna go train with Trunks and the girl Saiyan again!”
Gohan tensed in the air, looking from Videl who was flying up and around a tall oak tree to Goten. His brother had long since mastered flying. He was floating in the air with a serious look on his face. He looked so much like their dad in that moment that Gohan forgot to be so nervous.
“Saiyan? What’s a Saiyan?” Videl asked, suddenly right behind the eldest male.
Gohan laughed nervously when he turned around to face her. In a sort of visible defense he raised his hands up. “Nothing. It’s nothing!”
“Gohan…” Videl pushed him in a strong voice.
“Really Videl, it’s nothing. He’s just Uh, making up words!”
Goten chose one of the worst moments to speak up. “Not true! Gohan stop lying! Dad’s a saiyan. You said so! And so is Mr. Vegeta. And the girl! And me, you, and Trunks are half!”
“Goten, not now,” Gohan practically hissed out.
Not that Goten got the hint. Nor did it reverse all the damage that Goten had unknowingly caused.
“What’s a saiyan, Gohan?” Videl pressured him, poking him in the chest to get her point across. “And what girl is he talking about.”
Oh boy how was he going to get out of this one? Gohan started to open his mouth to do damage control. Unfortunately Goten beat him to it when he touched back down to earth.
“Saiyans are aliens from space!” Goten said in an excited tone. “With tails! Mom said that dad used to have a tail, Gohan was born with a tail, and the girl Saiyan has a tail!”
“Tails huh...wait, are you talking about Bella from school?”
Goten gasped, “you go to school with her Big brother?! Not fair! I want to go to school too!”
And that would probably be the only time they heard that fall from Goten’s mouth. It was a rather surreal experience for Gohan as he tried to think of something fast.
“Pretty much everyone thinks she’s your cousin. Is she?”
“No, she’s not,” Gohan answered quickly.
“I didn’t think so. But that’s not the only problem. You realize that they all think you’re sleeping with her right?”
Gohan eyes widened as his mouth fell open. “What?!”
Videl nodded. More to herself than anything, “I figured it was all bogus. I mean, you’re too nice of a guy to do something like that. But Angela has been telling everyone that’ll listen that you’ve been sleeping around with your cousin. Something about teddy bear underwear. I don’t know. I stopped listening after I heard it was about you. Cause that’s obviously nonsense.”
While he was flattered that Videl thought so well of him, Gohan was still shocked to the core. First the whole sporting thing and now...now they thought...he couldn’t even conceive what was going around the rumor mill without turning red.
“But she’s getting a lot of shit for it. Guys won’t stop bugging her.”
Gohan’s heart dropped to his stomach in guilt. It was his fault that you were the point of gossip. At least for this issue. Angela had been his problem. He should have dealt with her by himself. But he had allowed you to help him, it at least try to help him. He never imagined things would go so wrong.
“Didn’t help that the two of you were absent on the same day. And last I heard today she broke a guy’s hand and his nose,” Videl repeated. “Personally I think he got off easy. But she was suspended for a week because of it.”
That did not make Gohan feel better. It only made it worse. After everything you’d gone through, you’d been trying to get your life back on track. Now, because of him that was in jeopardy. Not only because of the rumor but when he’d asked you to watch Goten for the day that only made things worse.
“Goten, Get back home to mom,” Gohan said sternly.
“Aw, but why? I wanna practice more!”
“Don’t question me, just do it squirt.”
He wasn’t so sure that would work. But it seemed to have. Goten, with a lot of grumbling, and started back to the house. Then Gohan turned towards Videl with a serious expression.
“Videl, I’m sorry but I’m going to have to cut our lessons short today. Although I think you’ve learned everything I can teach you about flying anyways.”
“What, why?” Videl asked as Gohan lifted into the air.
“I need to go check on her. Make sure she’s doing alright.”
“She’s a big girl Gohan! She can look after herself. She doesn’t want you to come to her rescue.”
Videl’s words went unheeded as Gohan shot into the sky. She hurried to her jetcopter. Just because she could fly now didn’t mean she could keep up with the insane speed that Gohan just showed her.
For his part, Gohan was just hoping that you didn’t do anything drastic. Like go on a rampage.
