Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Thirty-nine
You kind of understood why Gohan wore his saiyaman costume. Other than hiding his identity to protect his family's privacy of course. Wearing the armor and battle suit that Bulma had made for you made you feel kind of awesome. Badass. It certain felt like you were a better fighter than you were. Which was odd really. But you supposed that's how people got caught up in the moment. You tried to push that down but you couldn't stop the smile that lit up your face as you hummed to yourself. Your tail waved behind you happily, catching Gohan's attention more than once as he tried to figure out how to explain flying to you.
He had explained it to Videl as well as his little brother Goten. Goten had taken to it like a fish in water. But Videl had a bit more of a challenge. She still got it extremely quickly for someone who'd never worked with Ki in his opinion. It was just that there was a certain awkwardness in trying to explain it to someone that thought that it had been all tricks for most of her life. And the way that she handled it like it was almost foreign entity to her had made Gohan nervous. Not because he had been afraid that Videl would hurt anyone but that she might never be ready to realize the full truth of how strong that everyone he knew really was.
He couldn't help but wonder where you would fall on that scale. According to your story you hadn't known about Ki until you were over seventeen years old. Just like Videl. But you'd also found out that you were a member of a near extinct species shortly after. From what Gohan could tell you'd taken to it remarkably well. You could use Instant Transmission, which was something that he'd only seen his father and Cooler do at this point, and you said something about shooting energy out of your mouth. So you had to have some Ki control. He just didn't know how much.
"Okay, so I think I figured out where we can start," Gohan said, his hands gripping his red belt slightly. "I want you to stop repressing your ki. I want to see how strong you are right now."
You were nervous, more so than Gohan who was trying to figure out how to be a teacher. You nodded and let out a deep breath. Slowly. You mentally relaxed as much as you could under pressure, your eyes closing as you just tried to let your body go. You'd been suppressing your Ki for so long that it felt almost embarrassing to let it out. But there was also a freedom to it and a certain pleasurable feeling. Much like letting down your hair. Energy rolled off you softly at first but then more and more as you let it go. It was nothing compared to what Gohan was used to from a good portion of the Z fighters. That being said it was way more than he expected after hearing how little training you had, and how little time you had to come to terms with all your changes.
"Good," Gohan said with a small smile. "That's a lot stronger than I thought you'd be. I think you're about as strong as my dad when he got to Namek. I thought you said you hadn't been training?"
"I haven't been...much. But you know how we apparently get stronger when we're wounded and then heal?" You asked in return. "Well I was wounded for pretty much all my life. So when I healed...I had all this energy I didn't know what to do with as my body got stronger. That's why the Yardratians taught me how to put a clamp on it really quick. They didn't want me drawing attention to their planet."
And you suspected that's why they were okay with you learning their sacred Instant Transmission. So that you could get off their planet and stop drawing attention just incase you forgot to lock down your energy.
"Huh, that's interesting," Gohan mused more to himself than anything.
He supposed that was reasonable. He remembered a time when Vegeta had Krillin purposely injure him so that he could get a power boost. Gohan wasn't sure how that really worked but it did. He had seen it far too many times to question it. And he'd felt it work on his own body. He didn't understand how it worked but by now he knew that it did. So the fact that you had multiple organs 'wounded' and stayed in a state of constant pain and weakness only to be healed, well he supposed that made as much sense as anything he'd seen.
"Wait, you said much?" Gohan asked as he shifted his weight slightly, his hands drifting down from his belt. "You have been training then?"
"Uh, regular gym just to see how long my body could go. But I mean, all the gyms close before I run out of stamina. Or I get hungry and then it just gets dangerous because I guess I start to get mean and I get a little rough with people. Some of the trainers have jokingly started carrying snickers with them. Not my fault if they come in smelling like a bacon cheeseburger and I'm hungry," you mumbled the last part, knowing you were getting off target but it was too late to fix it by that point. "But yeah, I probably need to find a 24 hour gym to do that I guess. But then I wouldn't have time to learn actual movements between that, doing normal life things, and school. I really only have the weekends as it is."
"Weekends huh? I guess that's better than nothing," Gohan said nervously.
He was used to spending months if not years at a time training. That's just how his life had been. He'd gone through sporadic periods of his life of intense training. First with Piccolo in preparation for Vegeta and Napa. Then the whole thing on Namek. Then the next time he trained it was in preparation for the androids but that had been far more relaxed than the time when he trained with his father in this very chamber. Compared to the time he spent with his dad or with Piccolo, any training he did by himself felt half assed in comparison. Not that he'd say 'ass' if he made his own assessment. It was just that he hadn't really done any training after Cell died. Sure there was that tournament with Bojack but...well, Gohan had just gone in as is. Which was why he felt that he had needed to take the month before the tournament to get back into the swing of things. He was sure that his movements were choppy. And he knew that he wasn't as powerful as he could be. He wasn't even as powerful as he used to be. He'd felt himself kind of slip backwards as he focused more on school. He was still pretty powerful, he wasn't that modest to be obtuse, but his ten-eleven year old self could probably have beaten him without too much fear of losing.
"I know, after everything I found out about people wanting to rip me open I should be focusing on getting stronger right now but I —"
"No, no," Gohan said, holding up his hands as he tried to stop you from degrading your progress. "I meant it. At least you're trying. That's good. Especially when you didn't have anything to really challenge you. I'm actually kind of impressed. I haven't been doing anything close to training since I was a kid."
"And you're still stronger than I can imagine," you tried to stop him from degrading himself too much.
He really should take more pride in what he could do. At least that was your stance on the matter. Then again you were kind of a hypocrite even though you would probably never see it that way. The clothes made you feel rather cool but the more you talked with Gohan, the more you realized just how far you were behind the other saiyans of Earth (and you were counting Gohan in that regardless of his human mother). There was so much you had to catch up with that you weren't sure what was more intimidating - the white expanse of the difference between your power level and theirs'.
Gohan smiled slightly. "After a year in here, you'll be surprised at what you can do."
You doubted it but you didn't say anything.
"For today we'll start with flying. You ready?"
"That's what I signed up for," you told him with a soft smile.
"Let's get started then."
Gohan started on what seemed simple enough. He had you concentrate on pulling forth your energy in a controlled manner, holding it in a stable manner for as long as you could. That was actually much harder than you would have ever thought it would be. It was like what Goku had tried to get you to do with moving the Ki through your body. The heat was incredible. On and on he had you hold that energy until you felt like your arms were quivering. You weren't using that much energy but maintaining it was harder than anything you'd tried so far.
The odd thing was that you were pretty sure he'd fallen asleep as he sat in front of you while you held a small orb between your open hands. You were half tempted to throw it at his face but that seemed kind of mean. If he really was sleeping then that would be a mean way to wake up and even if he wasn't, it felt rude. You still wanted to do it but you refrained.
Finally, after what felt like hours, you finally wavered. Your energy flickered out and you tried to reinforce it. Only it ended up that you put too much into it. The energy shot forward from your core. Gohan peaked an eye open at the same time you called out his name in a slight panic. The energy lit up his face with sharp contrasts, illuminating and casting shadows as it raced the second away from your body to his. He raised his hand and smacked it away.
"I'm so sorry, I lost control," you tried to explain to him but that felt feeble.
He smiled, "Hey, it was great. You did better than I expected. You just have to work on maintain your control. That will really be a key to staying airborne no matter what."
"How long do I have to be able to maintain my energy before I can fly?"
"Maybe two minutes?" Gohan guessed.
You stared at him hard at that. You'd been holding the ki in one place for a lot longer than two minutes. "...Gohan…"
"Hey," he said defensively, holding his hands up in front of him. "I was just trying to see how long you can hold it. Trust me, endurance plays a big part in fights the stronger you get. It might not seem important now but if you ever reach Super Saiyan it becomes pretty important."
See, if he had explained that from the start you might not have been as peeved as you were with him. As it was though, you wanted a pillow to throw at his head. You felt quite annoyed that he'd been making you maintain an energy ball when you didn't have to in order to really start flying.
"Alright, stand up, we'll try getting you off the ground now."
...now that you were tired from maintaining ki between your hands. Great. Still, you listened to him and stood up. He walked you through the motions and you found yourself lifting off of the ground slowly. You felt your body quivering as the energy pushed out in equal measure. It felt like you were creating a wind of sorts that flowed out from you skin and took an almost physical force. In your excitement you manipulate your ki incorrectly.
Your body launched forward straight into Gohan. As he fell backwards in surprise, with you landing on him, you couldn't help but be embarrassed. Though Gohan seemed more embarrassed over your mistake than you were. The look on his face was priceless. You erupted into a sort of giddy laugh as you realized that you were on your way to flying. Or at least falling and missing the ground.
______________________________
It had been three months since you had entered the time chamber. You had hurt and stretched pretty much ever part of your body as Gohan taught you nearly everything that his father taught him. Though you soon found out that your fighting style was a bit different than Gohans. He focused more on hitting while you favored your legs and tack downs. You were better at evasion than you were an actual full assault. Which made you tricky to pin down but at the same time that also meant that you weren't as confident when he finally managed to back you into a theoretical corner.
When he did, even holding back, he pretty much beat you black and blue. The boy was strong. Everytime he beat you it took you awhile to get back up. You weren't as dedicated or as disciplined as he had been even as a child. That just wasn't part of who you were. You did, eventually, get back to training but it wasn't like you had a concrete goal in mind. This was just a period of time where you were getting stronger for the sake of getting stronger. You wondered, often, if it would be different if there was something you were actually training towards. But you weren't. And you just didn't have the same drive. Although fighting him was actually kind of fun. Especially as you got better at it.
Like in the latest bout. Your legs were wrapped around Gohan's shoulder as you were prepared to flip him in mid air. You were surprisingly very good at keeping your focus and balance no matter what direction you were. It was as though you were born to be an astronaut. You felt him pulling you off of him by the shoulders. His grip was hard and he almost ripped your shoulders out of their sockets. You went with the force but grabbed onto his arms at the last moment.
As you and Gohan tumbled through the air you finally released your hold on his arms as you kicked him in the stomach, feeling satisfaction when you actually heard him grunt. It didn't last long as he flipped with his hands, righting his body. Gohan rushed at you. You felt your body make contact with the ground as you slid. Pain raced through your back as you tail bent at a weird angle underneath you. And for a moment you saw white as your head hit the ground harshly.
Gohan had his hand in your face, a ball of energy radiating from his palm but it went unreleased. "I won. Admit it."
You glared at him and tried to struggle. His hold got tighter and the ball got closer to your face, not to mention more powerful.
In a sort of desperation you decided to play dirty. Before he had time to realize what you were doing, you grabbed a hold of his long hair and pulled his neck taunt. And just as quickly you arched up to the best of your ability to licked his neck. Gohan lost focus in his shock and embarrassment. You used that moment to get out from under him and darted away.
"NOPE!" You called out from a far distance.
Gohan shook off his embarrassment quickly and went right back after you. You knew deep in side that you cheated. But oh well. The less you had to admit defeat the better. Besides you weren't the only one who needed to get better. While Gohan was stronger than you, undoubtedly so, he didn't seem to be able to hold his focus for very long when he was surprised. So you'd made it your goal to try and help with that in whatever way you could. He was training you but you also wanted to try and help him.
______________________________
Half year in a half day; that's how long had passed before you emerged from the chamber. You felt absolutely wrecked but in a good way. If there was such a thing. As you stepped out your eyes had to adjust from the brightness of the chamber to the darkness of the post-sunset Earth.
Gohan smiled as he walked out behind you. And if you had seen it, you would have agreed. Even with an endless expanse in the chamber you had started to feel cooped up. And that had been after the first “month”. After sharing multiple months with Gohan you’d gotten so bored that you had to find ways to amuse yourself.
You were pretty sure that your ways to amuse yourself were either hit and miss with Gohan. Like waking up to find that his clothes had little hearts and butterflies cut out of them in the nonessential areas. You’d gotten a much bigger laugh at it than he did. In any case you’d gone stir crazy.
You’d even taken to braiding Gohan’s thick mop of hair into different styles to pass some of the down time. You’d actually gotten pretty good. It was a pity that couldn’t continue. You were going to miss it when he cut it back to his normal length.
What else was it that you were going to miss? Well you hadn’t gone through heat in the “months” you’d been in there. Nor more than a singular period. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was boring in that place you might have stayed forever.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon Gohan,” the even voice of Mr. Popo called out.
He was a little bit always from where you and Gohan were. The aforementioned halfling rubbed the back of his braided head and laughed.
“My fault,” you said before Gohan felt the need to defend himself. “I go crazy when I’m bored. Couldn’t take it anymore. I need stuff and things.”
Like internet. Yay internet. And chocolate. And movies. And music. The list went on.
“We have a little over 24 more days till dad comes back for the tournament,” Gohan spoke out confidentially. “If anything we could always spend another half day in there.”
“Hmm, If we get older do you think they’ll call lies on us being High School students?”
You hadn’t changed too much. Your changes were much more subtle than Gohan’s. Your hair was the same unlike his. And you couldn’t see the half year when you looked into the mirror. Gohan, however, had filled out nicely while he was in there. Originally in his base form, his black school vest and white shirt had been loose. With how his shoulders and chest had expanded with muscles, he had the physique more as though he’d transformed into a super saiyan just at resting. He filled out his Gi when he wore it where as it had been loose on him when he picked you up at your apartment. And the way he held himself was better. If you didn’t know him as well as you did you would have thought he was some type of chick magnet with the way he held his shoulders and hips. It was the correct posture for the spine, but it looked damned sexy. You were just glad that you hadn’t gone into heat since entering the chamber; that was not something you were looking forward to now that you were out.
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Remember how Sharpner used to joke about you being a nerd? How there was no way you could be Saiyaman because you weren’t buff? I know that your cloths hid what you did have...but there’s no way you’re going to be able to do that now,” you told him with a teasing smile as you turned around to face him, hands behind your back. “You're like...twice as pretty now. Girls are going to be jealous. Your chest has grown at least three sizes today,”
Gohan didn’t really blush at that, not like he would have at the start of the “day”. You’d teased him and joked around too often after the first couple of months. He just sort of got used to it. And he’d realized a long time ago that you weren’t being forward or anything, you were just using a weird sense of honesty. He’d even stopped being distracted by such comments while sparing. As well as the “sneak attacks” you use to cheat with.
“I think you're even prettier than your dad was at your age now,” you complimented him, walking backwards.
Gohan blinked. “Really?...Wait, you thought my dad was pretty?”
“I was dying when I knew him, Gohan, but I wasn’t blind. Well I almost went blind by the end. But then my parents grew me new eyes soooo…”
You’d gotten off track again. When you realized that you stopped. Though thankfully the topic you’d trailed off to (having to replace your eyes) was enough to stop Gohan from questioning your attraction to Goku any further. You hummed happily before an idea popped into your head.
You lifted into the air as you looked to Gohan. “Last one to my house buys dinner!”
Because stars above you were craving a mountain of cheeseburgers.
