Gaiden: The bet

It was another fine day in
East city. The sun was shining and the birds were singing and Colonel Roy
Mustang’s staff members were hanging around the office looking just busy enough
to avoid Hawkeye’s attention.

“Hasn’t it been a while
since Edward-kun went in?” asked Sergeant Fury curiously.

“Yeah.lang=EN-US style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:
EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'> It’s been unusually quiet too now that you
mention it. Usually it’s possible to hear them arguing from the other side of
the town,” answered 2^nd lieutenant lang=EN-US style='mso-fareast-font-fy:"Ty:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:
EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>Bredalang=EN-US style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:
EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>, “the colonel’s been acting weird lately
too.”

mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>“Didn’t he send you to pick
them up at the station, Havoc?” warrant officer Farman asked from the blond chain
smoker.

The blonde man took the
ever present cigarette from his mouth and nodded thoughtfully.

“I guess it’s just another
way to annoy the chibi.” he finally said.

They all spent class=GramE>a moment thinking about the current situation.

“Nah… I think it’s
something else too. I mean sure, he enjoys annoying Ed-kun but isn’t this going
a bit far for that? Usually he just waits until Ed wanders into his office.” Fury
finally said.

“That’s a good point. He is
one of the few people who can actually get away with annoying Ed… as long as he
keeps his gloves on and stays dry that is.” Farman agreed.

“Well I’d be willing to bet
that there’s something more going on between the two of them now.” Breda said suddenly.

Havoc shook his head. “Nah
I don’t think so. I mean the colonel has never shown any interest towards men
so why would he start now? Besides Edward-kun is only
15.”

“Are you willing to bet on
that?” asked a new voice and they all turned to look at the newcomer.

Hughes smiled and waved at
them.

“I was just coming to see
the colonel. Do you know if he’s in?” Hughes asked.

“He’s here but Edward-kun
is in there. It might be better wait until he storms out,” Havoc answered. “class=GramE>and what were you saying about a bet?”

“Oh so you’re interested?” Hughes
asked slyly.

[2 hours later]

“Okay so he’s not in his
office… That doesn’t mean anything. I’ll raise the bet.”

“Sure you can afford it?”

“Just write it up.”

“Okay so
both the colonel and Edward-kun disappeared for the night. But that still
doesn’t mean that they’re involved like that.” Havoc said.

Things were
really looking bad for him but he still thought that there was no way the
colonel and Edward Elric of all people would be in a relationship.

“Wish we
had a way to find out the truth,” Fury said tapping pencil against the table
top.

They all
turned when they heard style='mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Roylang=EN-GB style='mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>’s office door open and Hughes come
out. He was grinning like a maniac but this time there were no photos in his
hands.

“You,” he
said pointing at Havoc, “and you and you,” he continued pointing at other
people, “owe me some money.”

“What?
Don’t tell me?” Havoc asked.

“That’s
right,” Hughes said still grinning.

“Damn,”
muttered the losers as they started to dig for the money.

Someone
coughed and they turned to look at the office door where the colonel was
standing. They all noticed that he was wearing his gloves and he did not look
happy. And an unhappy flame alchemist is not something any of them wanted near
them.

“These rumours that I’m in a relationship with the Fullmetal alchemist…”
he said fingers twitching. “Anyone who keeps spreading them will suffer a quick and quite painful
death.”

All of them
nodded eagerly keg thg their eyes on the colonel’s fingers. Hawkeye just sighed
and continued doing her work.

“That is
all.” Roy said turning back to his office.

The one’s
who’d been betting against the relationship theory sighed and handed out the
money they’d lost. Hughes grinned happily. This had been a good day so far.
