“Al? Al?” an right armless Ed through the house. “Hey, ya old shrimp ” he called to Pinako. “Have you seen Al anywhere?”

“I believe he and Nadine went for a walk, Pipsqueak,” sh replied.

“Winry ” Ed called again.

“What? ?” she snapped.

“Come help me find Al.”

“Do you want me to finish your arm or not? ? ”

“Have Pinako do it.”

“She’s doing the chores.”

“Then take a break. Come on ”

“~You~ want me to take a break?”

“Boredom makes you do crazy things. Besides, I’m positive I know where he is.”

“Ok...”

********************************************************

“Where do you think he is?” Winry asked her companion.

“There’s a hill by where our house used to be. He loves it there,” Ed replied.

But as the two walked, they saw the familiar suit of armor by the wreckage of their home, not at the hill. Ed stopped dead in his tracks.

“I wonder if... he told her...” he muttered.

“He may have,” Winry replied. “They’ve been spending a lot of time together.”

“I’m the last person you have to tell that to,” Ed said sharply. “Well, there’s only one way to find out. Come on, we’ll be able to hear everything from those bushes.”

“You want to spy on your brother?” That’s not only stupid, but chilidish as well. I’m going back home. At least your arm doesn’t get any crazy ideas.”

“It does when it’s attached to me ” Ed told her retreating back. She just kept walking.

Keeping to the woodsy area and bushes, Ed crept as close as he could to his brother and Nadine.

“I can hardly believe a house stood here,” she was saying.

“After Mom died, we didn’t want to worry about it,” Al replied.

“Winry or Pinako couldn’t care fo rit?”

“We didn’t want to burden them.”

“Understandable. Hey, look ” she suddenly said.

“What is it?” Even Ed was curious at this point.

“It a piece of a picture,” she replied. “Hmm, I wonder...”

Ed strained to see what the girl was doing. She was crouching down, but her back was to him. Soon, he saw the familiar light of a transmutation. Had she just...?

“Look ” she said, jumping up. “It worked ”

“You fixed the picture...” Al said, seemingly in awe.

“It’s the least I could do,” she replied, handing it to him. “With all the help you’ve been giving me. It looks like a family shot.”

Al looked at the picture. “Yeah... it is. Ed... Mom...and me...”

Ed almost forgot he was hiding and demanded to see it too, but he remembered and sulkily retracted.

Nadine was surveying the rubble before her once more. “It still seems a little extreme to just burn down the whole house.”

Al was quiet for a moment. “Nadine,” he began. “I haven’t told you the whole story, and I can’t, not yet.”

“Well, I can’t help but feel a little insulted-“

“Oh, please don’t-“

“Al, it’s ok! I do understand, even if my feelings are a bit hurt. We haven’t known each other very long, and whatever you want to tell me is obviously very important, and not for just anybody’s ears. I can wait Al, until you’re ready to tell me.”

“Nadine...” Al seemed speechless.

Ed couldn’t believe his ears. Did such understanding exist? He stood in his place in the bushes. “It’s ok, Al. Go ahead and tell her.”

“Brother? How long have you been there?”

“Not long. But I’m leaving now.”

“You were spying on us?”

“Please don’t be angry, Al.” He paused. “I guess I’m not as grown up as I thought.” He turned and walked away, leaving his brother and the girl behind.

*************************************************************

“Winry’s almost done,” Ed told Al that night. “We’ll be able to leave the day after tomorrow.”

Al said nothing.

“Unless, of course, you wanted to go to Central with the colonel and Nadine.”

“What?!?! Brother, why would you think that?”

“You’ve spent all your time with her, and I thought you were still mad at me.”

“Annoyed, really. You’re such a pain, brother.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“But I’ll be going with you. We have a mission, after all.”

“We’re getting so close.”

“I’m glad I talked you into coming here first.”

“I suppose I needed the tune-up.”

“You wanted to see Winry.”

“When did you get so conniving?”

“Look at who I’m always around.”

“Don’t you start blaming me!!!!!”

Al snickered.
