Chapter Three
Mariah watched Tyson when he shoved pizza down his throat with a disgusted look on her face (she wasn’t the only one tough…).
“Can you be anymore gross, Tyson?” she said, a tone of irritation in her voice.
“Aw, come on Mariah,” Tyson grinned before grabbing another slice of pizza.
“Get used to it, Mariah,” Kai said sarcastically from where he stood, leaning against the wall in his trademark position. “You’re gonna see lots of that from now on.”
Mariah looked terrified at him before shivering slightly with disgust. The others just burst out laughing when they saw the look on her face. Even Kai smiled slightly. They heard a knock on the door and then Mr Dickenson entered.
“Hiya, Mr Dickenson!” Tyson cried with his mouth full, but the old man didn’t pay him any attention. The others looked surprised at him. The old man’s face was almost grey with worry and he seemed a lot older than what he actually was.
“Kai,” he said, no one in the room had ever heard him sound so serious before, “there’s someone here to see you.”
Kai raised an eyebrow slightly.
“Who?” he asked indifferently, though he was a little curious.
“Just come with me, don’t ask any questions, please,” Mr Dickenson said tiredly. Now even Kai looked surprised. The others stared at him.
“Alright then,” Kai said. Mr Dickenson smiled sadly and motioned him to follow. Kai followed the old man without even giving the others a glance before exiting the room. He walked silently after Mr Dickenson, none of them said a word. Mr Dickenson opened the door to his room for him and Kai entered hesitantly. Now he was beginning to be suspicious. Who was the person who wanted to see him? Why did Mr Dickenson behave like he did? Something wasn’t right, Kai could feel it.
Someone was standing by the window in the other side of the room. A young girl was standing with her back against him. Her light blue hair was long, probably so long she could sit on it. Kai felt his heart stop.
‘No!’ he thought shocked. ‘It can’t be!’
She finally seemed to notice their presence. Slowly she turned around. Sapphire blue eyes met crimson. Kai couldn’t stop staring at her, his eyes wide with shock.
“K-Kisara!” he finally stuttered out. “B-but it can’t be! Y-you’re… dead!”
She smiled sadly. He could tell she had been crying. His legs suddenly gave way underneath him and he buried his face in his hands as he sank down on his knees on the cold floor. He didn’t know what to think, what to say, what to feel.
“Kai…” He looked up at the sound of the pleading voice. He looked up into the face of the young woman, once the girl he had known in the abbey and whom he for all these years had thought to be dead. She smiled slightly, her eyes shining with hope as she stretched out a hand towards him. Kai quickly got to his feet, slowly backing away from her. She stared at him, tears starting to form in her eyes.
“Kai, please…” she whispered softly and took a small step closer to him. But he instantly backed away. He shook his head slowly, his eyes wide with fear as he slowly backed away from her. He backed until he felt the cool door press against his back. She took another hesitant step closer to him and that was it. Kai couldn’t take it anymore. He searched for the doorknob, found it and rushed out of the room.
-------------------
“Hey, I wonder who this person is…” Tyson murmured curiously as they waited in his, Max’s and Kenny’s room for Kai to return.
“Yeah, me too, but what I’m most curious about is why Mr Dickenson acted like he did,” Max said.
“Hmm… ah well…” Tyson sighed. He looked up when he noticed that Ray was walking towards the door. “Hey, where are you going?” Ray looked surprised at him but then smiled slightly.
“I’m just going over to mine and Kai’s room. I’ll be right back.” He opened the door and stepped outside, closing the door silently behind him. But before he realized what happened, he got knocked down to the ground when someone ran right into him. He rubbed his head and looked up to see who had run into him.
“Ouch! What the… Kai?!”
Kai just darted away without so much as giving him a glance, leaving a very confused Ray behind.
“Hey, what’s going on…?” he whispered, but then got to his feet, running after the slate-haired blader. Kai may be fast, but Ray was even faster. With cat-like speed he caught up with him and grabbed hold of his arm, stopping him.
“Kai, wait!” he exclaimed. “What’s going on?” Kai tried to yank his arm away, but Ray clung on to him, not letting go.
“Let go off me!” Kai said in a threatening tone.
“No! Not ‘til you tell me what’s going on! Why are you running?”
“That’s none of your business! Just let go!” Kai gave him one of his infamous death glares, the ones that could make anyone’s blood run cold. It didn’t fail this time either. Ray felt a chill creep down his spine when he looked into Kai’s crimson eyes.
‘God! He’s scary when he’s mad!’ Ray thought, taking a cautious step back, letting go off his arm.
“Please, Kai,” Ray said in a softer tone. “What’s wrong?” He gasped softly when he noticed that Kai’s eyes were shimmering with unshed tears. Before he could say anything else, Kai ran off again, leaving a stunned Ray in the hallway.
“Kai… was crying…?” he whispered. He then heard footsteps behind him and he turned around, only to see Mr Dickenson’s worried face and a young girl who stood silently by his side.
“Mr Dickenson!” He looked at the girl. “And… who’s this?”
The young girl met his eyes and Ray felt how his cheeks turned a little redder.
‘Whoa, this girl’s really pretty!’ he thought while looking at her a little closer. She was a bit longer than Mariah, her brow reached up to his eyes, and she was slender and well-built (especially around the chest, he noted to himself). She had long, shiny light blue hair and sapphire coloured eyes. She was wearing a short, long-sleeved light lavender dress and slip on shoes (A/N: I had a really hard time finding a suitable word for these shoes but they look similar to the ones Ray wears) that went in the same colour.
“My name’s Kisara Aino, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” the girl said softly and bowed slightly. Ray blinked and then blushed.
“Ah! Pleasure to meet you too, I’m Ray Kon,” he said and bowed his head for her.
“Ray, did you see where Kai went?” Mr Dickenson asked. Ray frowned a little.
“We bumped into each other, but he took off down the hallway,” Ray said slowly. “Why was he running away anyway?” He frowned when he noticed that Kisara looked down in the floor after he had spoken, hands pressed against her chest.
Mr Dickenson sighed deeply.
“Let’s go back to the others,” the he said tiredly. “I believe Kai needs to be alone for a while.” As he said the last sentence, Ray noticed how he placed a comforting hand on Kisara’s shoulder. She smiled a trembling smile in return.
-------------------
Kai had fallen three times on his way out of the hotel. It had hurt every time, but he had ignored the pain. He stumbled out through the entrance doors and kept running. Blinded by tears he didn’t stop until he reached the Red Square. He hid behind a corner and sank down on his knees. He breathed heavily, he tried hard to catch his breath. A thousand thoughts were going through his mind all at the same time.
‘I can’t be… she’s dead… she died a long time ago in the abbey… I saw the guards drag her away, it’s the same as a death sentence… how can it be? How can she still be alive?’
He suddenly felt sick and threw up on the snow covered ground. Then he breathed in deeply, trying to get control of his confused mind. Then something suddenly hit him.
‘Hey, wait a second. For all these years… all these lonely years… I’ve been wishing for some impossible way that would bring her back to me. And now she’s here. She’s come back to me from the dead and what do I do? Run away from her, terrified as a little child, leaving her confused and sad behind. God I’m such an idiot!’
Kai got up on his feet, wiping away his tears with growing irritation before taking a deep breath and began walking back to the hotel.
-------------------
Kisara looked shyly at the people around her. Mr Dickenson had already introduced her to the Bladebreakers and Mariah, and now they were waiting for her to tell them her story. She had been seated in the middle of the couch, with Mariah on her right side and Ray on her left. The blonde one, the one they called Max, was smiling kindly at her. She gave him a smile of appreciation before she took a deep breath.
“I… I don’t know where to start,” she said softly, looking embarrassed and anxious.
“Just tell us how you ended up in the abbey,” Mr Dickenson said calmly. Kisara closed her eyes and sighed deeply. Then she opened her eyes again, but this time they seemed distant, almost like she wasn’t there with them anymore.
“It was so long ago…” she whispered. “My mother and my father were working in the abbey as scientists. My mother was Japanese, and she had moved all the way from Japan to Russia to work for Mr Voltaire Hiwatari at his company; Biovolt. She met my father there and they fell in love. They married shortly after that and my mother became almost instantly pregnant with me. However… during the delivery, something went wrong and my mother died in childbirth.”
Kisara paused and her eyes turned sad before she continued.
“Since my mother died giving birth to me, my father blamed me for her death. He used to beat me on a daily basis and he used to call me these horrible names like ‘devil child’ and he used to tell me that I was a child of evil. It was… a very hard time in my life…”
*~*~*~ FLASHBACK *~*~*~
A six year old girl was sitting curled up in a corner of her family’s living room, sobbing quietly as she stared at her father with fear in her bright sapphire eyes. A small hand was covering a large bruise on her cheek. He was standing in front of her, with a bottle of vodka in his hand, the other one fisted into a ball, ready to deliver another blow.
“Please, don’t hurt me… papa…” she sobbed, tears streaming down her face. The man looked at her with disgust and hatred.
“You’re nothing like her, you know?” her father said in a slurry voice. “Your mama… she was some woman… she was beautiful and strong… and you… you took her from me! You devil! Evil child!!” She screamed when his fist connected with her temple, and she felt the taste of blood in her mouth as she bit herself in her tongue.
“Papa…” she whispered. The man walked up to her and grabbed her long, light blue hair, pulling it until she winced with pain.
“You are evil, do you know that?” he whispered, his dark eyes shining with such a burning hatred that it almost scared her. “You are a child of evil, nobody wants you, nobody loves you. I was just unlucky to get you. You don’t even have a name… you don’t need one. Children of evil don’t have names. They shouldn’t even exist.”
She cried soundlessly, watching him with eyes that shimmered of sadness. This was a part of her daily basis and she knew it, she had been forced to live with it since the day she was born. Yet still it hurt every time she had to endure it.
Her father slapped her around a few times until he grew tired of it and the bottle of vodka turned out to be more interesting than her. He disappeared into his bedroom and the little girl knew that it was her cue. Now she was safe for the rest of the night – hopefully. She curled up in the corner, sobbing quietly.
She was all alone. She had to endure this every day, so she thought that she would get used to it, but she didn’t. Every day was just as painful as the other. His words sometimes hurt more than his beatings. What wouldn’t she do if it meant that he would leave her alone for just one day? Why did she have to live this life? She had never even left the house before. Since her father brought her here from the hospital six years ago, she had never gone outside. He would kill her if she did. She was dressed in rags, slept on the floor and rarely got any food. If she was lucky he would sometimes give her some leftovers. Sometimes she would wonder why he didn’t get rid of her, since he always threatened her to do just that. Did he enjoy keeping her barely alive just to torment her? Often, or rather, always, she would wish for him to kill her. The life she was living wasn’t even worth calling a life. She wasn’t living. She was a dead girl in a living body.
“Dear God, please, if you hear me…” she whispered into the night. “Please, save me from this… please… just let me die…”
*~*~*~ END FLASHBACK *~*~*~
Kisara paused again to wipe away a few tears that formed in her eyes.
“It was many hard and lonely years…” she said slowly. Mariah looked sadly at her and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Kisara smiled warmly at her, grateful for her support before she continued.
“I still remember the day he first brought me outside the house…” she said softly.
*~*~*~ FLASHBACK *~*~*~
The little girl looked wide-eyed at all the things around her. She had seen it all through the windows, but she had never been outside, feeling the smells and the cool air that brushed against her bruised cheeks.
“Come on,” her father said harshly and she quickly hurried after him. She didn’t know why he was taking her outside. He had even given her some other clothes to wear. Even though they were old and smelled she had never felt so pretty before. He had even let her wash her hair properly. But she couldn’t help to wonder he was making so much trouble for her sake? He had never treated her this way, and honestly, it worried her. But still, she was outside the house, she had gotten something more decent to wear and she was happy.
She didn’t know where he was taking her, but after they had walked for a while they got to a very large and old building where they stopped. Two men were guarding the entrance. They nodded in recognition and allowed them to enter. The girl hurried after her father as he led her through the huge building. They stopped outside a large wooden door where her father knocked a few times before entering.
“Alexander Petrovna! You’re in time,” a man said behind a large desk. Behind him stood a tall, purple-haired man. His icy grey eyes sent cold shivers down the little girl’s spine.
“Lord Hiwatari, Mr Balcov,” her father said politely and bowed before them.
“Ah, so this is the girl you were talking about?” Voltaire said and got up from his chair and walked up to the little girl. She wanted to back away from him, but a glance from her father told her not to if she didn’t want to end up in trouble. She swallowed hard and watched the elder man in front of her.
“It is a beautiful child indeed,” Voltaire said. “But she is a little bit thin don’t you think? Don’t you feed your own daughter?” The taunting tone in his voice couldn’t be misread.
“I like to not think of her as my daughter,” her father said harshly. “You said you wanted a girl and here you have one. I’ll even give her to you if it means that I’ll be rid of her.”
“Is she intelligent?” Boris cut in. His cold voice echoed through the room.
“We’ll soon see, Boris,” Voltaire said, not letting his dark eyes away from the girl. He looked up at her father and smiled, but it wasn’t a friendly one.
“You’ve been a good employee, Alexander,” he said coldly. “Thank you for the child. I’m sure she’ll do just fine in the abbey.”
Her father bowed his head and then left the room without even giving her a last glance or word. She knew she would never see him again.
Voltaire turned to the girl again.
“So, tell me, girl. What’s your name?” he asked.
“I… I don’t have one…” she whispered.
“I see. Don’t worry, I’m sure the boys will find something suitable for you. Boris.”
“Yes, my lord?”
“Bring the girl to my grandson and the rest of the Demolition Boys. Let them take care of her. Have our scientists examine her tomorrow; I want the results by tomorrow evening at the latest.”
“Are you sure, my lord?” Boris wondered. Voltaire turned his dark gaze to him.
“I’m positive, Boris. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to my little experiment, now would I?”
Experiment? The little girl didn’t even know what that meant, but something told her that it wasn’t good. The purple-haired man turned to her and reached out a hand towards her.
“Let’s go now, my child,” he said softly, but it was no warmth in his voice or in his smile. The little girl smiled faintly at him, before taking his hand. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad after all, she thought as she followed Boris down to the basements under the abbey.
She had no idea how wrong she was…
-------------------
Five boys were training with their beyblades when Boris entered along with the little girl. All of them immediately stopped and stared at the girl.
“Boys, this is our latest beginner here at the abbey. Take good care of her,” he said shortly before leaving them alone in the room.
The little girl stared at them. She was scared. They all kept their eyes on her, following her every move.
“Are you just gonna stand there all day not saying anything?” the lilac-haired boy said, breaking the silence between them.
The little girl jumped by the sound of his voice and she started to shiver as tears filled her eyes.
“Knock it off, Brian!” a slate-haired boy said. “You’re scaring her.”
Brian scoffed at him but didn’t say anything else. The slate-haired boy walked up to the girl and smiled friendly.
“My name’s Kai. What’s your name?” he asked.
“I don’t have a name…” the girl whispered sadly.
“You don’t have a name? Come on, everybody have a name!” a blond boy burst out.
“Spencer,” Kai said in a low, threatening tone and the boy instantly silenced. He then turned to the girl again. “Alright, we’ll just have to come up with a good name for you then.”
“How about… Anya?” Ian suggested.
“Nah, too common!” Bryan disagreed.
“Lena?”
“Too boring.”
Kai turned to the girl again.
“What do you wanna be called?” he asked. The girl shrugged.
“It doesn’t matter…” she said softly. Kai looked at her more closely, eyeing her features wordlessly.
“I know your name,” he then said. “From now on, your name will be Kisara, after my mother. You look a lot like her.” He smiled slightly and reached out a hand to cup her cheek. She trembled by his touch. No one had ever touched her like that before. She gave him a faint smile, which he responded.
*~*~*~ END FLASHBACK *~*~*~
“It was from that day I got to know Kai and the rest of the Demolition Boys. They were my only friends… the only ones that cared for me. For nobody else would in the abbey… We were all alone, completely left out to the mercy of the mentors, scientists and guards of the abbey – a mercy that didn’t even exist.”
Kisara paused again and gratefully accepted a glass of water that Mr Dickenson offered her. The room fell completely silent. The others had been enchanted by her story and now none of them could think of anything to say. Tyson looked at her with watery eyes, and he wasn’t the only one. Max wiped away the tears that cascaded down his cheeks with the back of his hand and Ray just sat completely still, his golden eyes were shimmering with unshed tears.
“If I were to describe my life in the abbey, I would call it Hell on Earth,” Kisara said slowly. “Not in my wildest imagination could I ever come up with something so horrible, so… inhuman. I went from one hell to another. I sometimes began to wonder if my father had been right after all. Maybe I was a child of evil and maybe I did deserve the life I was living. More then once I thought of suicide. But… something always held me back.” She smiled slightly as her eyes filled up with tears. “Kai was my strength. If it wasn’t for him, I would have killed myself a long time ago. He was the only one that had ever loved me, and by the Gods I loved him. And when they threw me out from the abbey… I…”
She burst out in tears, unable to continue. She buried her face in her hands as her sobs shook her body. Her long hair covered her face almost like a curtain.
“That’s enough, Kisara,” Mr Dickenson said softly as he stood up and placed his hands comfortingly on her shoulders. “I know it was hard for you to tell us all this, and I thank you.”
They all looked up as they heard the door open and close, only to see Kai stand there in front of them.
“Kai…” Ray said slowly, but the bluenette didn’t respond. He only had eyes for Kisara. She slowly got to her feet and walked over to him. Time seemed to stop as they faced each other. For so many years he had thought her to be dead and now she was standing right there in front of him. Oh, how he had wished for this moment! And now… when she was finally back, he didn’t know how to act. He didn’t need to however, as she softly glided into his arms, leaning her cheek against his chest. Wordlessly he wrapped his arms around her.
No words were spoken, they didn’t need to. All they did was to stand there, in a hotel room full of people watching them, holding each other gently.
Kai closed his eyes as he leant his head against her silky light blue hair. A single tear fell down his cheek.
She was back.
