Hold It Together
Goku turned his head, only to find the window he had been viewing Vegeta on was gone. He cried out and flung himself where it had been—
—and went sailing through the air, dragon no longer beneath him. He hit something that gave a little, and a grunt issued forth.
There was a moment of silence, and slowly Goku tried to clamber to his feet. Hands were suddenly grabbing at him, and he made a surprised noise, almost jumping into the air.
“Kakarott?”
He leaned up and blinked at a very surprised-looking Vegeta. “Vegeta?”
The man under him grunted. “You’re heavy….”
Goku mumbled an apology and rolled off of Vegeta. Then he stared at him. “I…I was with the dragon.”
Vegeta was looking at Goku with much the same expression he was being given. “Are you real?”
Goku blinked, and then he looked down at himself, picking at the sleeve of his shirt first and then pinching himself. “Ow!” He looked up and grinned at Vegeta. “Yep!”
The expression on Vegeta’s face was bewildered and then he let out a snort. “Shit…. I can’t imagine anyone but you doing that….”
Tilting his head, Goku furrowed his brow. “Are…you okay?”
Vegeta stared at him, his hand moving to brush against his pants. He shifted, pressing his legs against Goku’s. “You are real…. I’ve been…dreaming I think. I dreamed you were here, telling me you were dead….”
Goku blinked. “I…I was dreaming too…. I mean…you were with me…where the dragon was. And you were telling me…you were in trouble.”
Vegeta looked bewildered still, his legs still rubbing up against Goku’s leg. “How did you get here?”
Neither of them was questioning their “dreams”. Of course, it was hard to question something shared. It was an…unspoken agreement that since they’d both had them, they wouldn’t ask.
Rubbing the back of his head with one hand, Goku grinned slightly. “Well…I could see you through this sort-of hole. And…when it vanished I kind of…I guess jumped through it.”
Vegeta shook his head, and then moved closer to Goku, his hands near where he was seated. He stared down at his hands. “This is all…too strange.”
“Are you…sure you’re okay?”
Vegeta looked up at Goku, looked into his eyes and stared at him for a long moment. Then he sighed and nodded. “I wasn’t before…. I’m…I’m okay now I think. I’ve…just been…off balance. You never said when you were coming back. You just…left again.”
“Again?”
Vegeta leaned back then, scowling. “Yes again! Or did you forget when you died the second time and didn’t want to be resurrected?”
“I had reasons for that….”
“They were bullshit reasons! You had to come back and save the Earth anyways. It was quite obvious you being here had nothing to do with that incident.”
Goku shrugged. “I…I made a mistake then….”
Black eyes widened suddenly and a rough voice chuckled. “I never thought I’d hear you admit that.” Vegeta looked at Goku for a long moment, then leaned in until their faces almost touched.
Goku’s own eyes widened as Vegeta’s narrowed. His voice came out hushed. “Wha-what are you doing?”
“What I’ve wanted to do for a while now….” The sentence trailed off as his lips pressed to the other’s lips, testing first and tasting slowly. The kiss deepened when there was no protest, the lips sliding over each other.
Eyes slipping closed; Goku moaned lightly, his hands moving to curl around Vegeta’s shoulders. At the touch, Vegeta broke the kiss, staring at Goku before crawling into his lap. Goku’s eyes again widened. “V-Vegeta…?”
Vegeta looked up at Goku, one of his eyebrows raised in inquisition. When his silent question wasn’t answered, he asked aloud. “What is it?”
“Well…it’s just…you’re…I mean…what’s happening?” He looked comically taken aback, as if his mind just wasn’t catching up to events yet.
Vegeta sighed, resisting the urge to just lean against Goku. This would be sudden to the other Saiyajin, while to him it just seemed like a smooth slide downhill. “I’ve been having these dreams. In them you’re alive, and you—you’re sparring. We’ll talk then…and you….”
Goku stared at the body in his lap, and then put his arms around it, resting his chin on Vegeta’s head. “Do I say strange things?”
“Yes. You say things you normally wouldn’t say.”
“That’s what the dream you did too…. But…Vegeta, I wasn’t sleeping….”
“Neither was I.”
They looked at each other for a moment, and then Vegeta shifted on his lap. “In the morning, I…forget what’s happened…. I think…I was going insane….”
“Or maybe we were just trying to talk to each other.”
Vegeta snorted. “Then you were a complete ass.”
Laughter rang out around them as Goku threw back his head. Vegeta had to chuckle watching him. “It wasn’t funny at the time.”
“Well,” he gathered his composure together, “I don’t think it was really me, you know? I mean, it wasn’t really you for me. I knew that. It was just…bugging us…with fears and stuff.”
Vegeta nodded slowly. “Our fears were unfounded?” It was a way of asking what had been said, without actually asking it.
Goku nodded, grinning widely. “Sure were! You’re fine.” He hugged Vegeta to him and heard a grunt from the man, but no resistance. “How about you?”
“I…think they were….”
Goku leaned back. “Well…I’m not dead.”
“Are you staying?”
Goku thought about that. “Well…the dragon said my job wasn’t done.” He felt the body in his arms stiffen and he tightened his hold. “But the dragonballs are inside me now. I kind of absorbed them. So…even though my job isn’t done, I think I can stay right here and do it.”
“What if you’re wrong?”
Goku looked down at Vegeta again. “Then you can come with me...if you want to.”
The bowed head rose and wide eyes looked at him. “I’d be…allowed?”
“I don’t see why not.”
Vegeta’s face turned thoughtful, and then he nodded. “You did promise me that fight. I’m sick of constantly holding it off.”
Goku laughed. “Yeah, sorry about that. When I was kid, it just wouldn’t have been as fun.”
Vegeta snorted again. “I could’ve at least tossed you around a bit in that form—”
“Hey!”
There was a nasty chuckle and then Vegeta leaned back some, straightening himself in Goku’s lap. He cleared his throat a little. “So….”
“So….” Goku was still grinning, his chin still on Vegeta’s head and his arms still wrapped around him. “You shouldn’t worry so much, or even think sometimes, you know? You have to just let things happen.”
Vegeta turned his head and Goku lifted his own, the two looking at each other again. Finally Vegeta grunted and shrugged. “How about you do those things and I worry? It seems to work out best.”
Goku nodded. “Yeah, it does. So…how about we— We can’t spar. We could…eat!”
Vegeta shook his head and rolled his eyes. “Fine. We’ll eat. Do you want anyone else to know you’re around?”
“Well they’re going to find out. Trunks and Goten and Gohan can all sense ki.”
“So can Bra and her son.”
“Bra has a son?”
He nodded. “And he has a son as well. You’ve been gone a long time.” There was a considering expression on Vegeta’s face as he looked at Goku. “Do you even know what today is, Kakarott?”
Goku shook his head, looking confused.
“It’s the Tournament. They’ve even managed to erect this statue of you. It’s ugly.”
“Hey!”
“Anyways, my great-grandchild will be fighting yours. And the irony of that would be their names.”
At the continued bewildered expression from the younger Saiyajin, Vegeta spared him any guessing games. “Vegeta and Goku are their names. Vegeta at least has been told of his heritage and I’m sure spoiled on stories of me, if I know my children. Likely the same has been done with yours.”
“So they know each other!”
Vegeta shook his head. “No, the Briefs and the Sons haven’t been in contact for years. Goten and Trunks had a huge fight and have never spoken to or of each other again. Bra and Pan lost contact as well.”
“But…I mean….”
Vegeta shrugged. “I can’t explain it. They wouldn’t talk to me about it, and frankly I didn’t ask. It doesn’t matter. If those two are anything like us, then the petty squabbles of their relatives won’t matter.”
Goku looked at Vegeta and then smiled, leaning forward and kissing him again. Vegeta stilled, surprised and then leaning into the touch, making a content noise in the back of his throat.
There was a slight flush to Vegeta’s cheeks that made Goku smiled as he leaned back again. “Do you want to go see them fight?”
Vegeta thought about that for only a second before nodding. “I want to see the boy’s technique. I want to see if the training I managed to get in before his father caught me is being used.”
Goku chuckled. “Are you a bad influence to him or something?”
Snorting, Vegeta shrugged. “It’s his grandmother that went on and on about all those stories. It just made him want to take up fighting. He caught me training one time and just…stared at me. He annoyed me so I put him to work. The boy’s father then informed me that he was getting a real education because he was an Earthling.”
“Hm…well maybe after we watch them fight, we could…go on an extended vacation.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean going through space, you showing me some places that you remember that are…good.”
“Good? Kakarott I was a…mercenary for all the time I was in space. If I went anywhere, it wasn’t “good”.”
He enjoyed the color that appeared on Goku’s face, but he just shrugged. “I just wanna see what you saw. Not…not the stuff you didn’t like, but the stuff you did.”
“So you want to go to a strip club?”
“What?! No!”
Vegeta chuckled and shook his head. “Sometimes you’re too easy, Kakarott. I know of some places. I didn’t frequent the clubs that much. Your brother had that covered.”
He heard a grunt from the other and grinned. He’d never really talked about Radditz much, and it seemed that was a sore point for Kakarott. He’d have to remember that.
“Let’s go see the brats spar. We can eat there.” He looked at Goku. “Someone might see you there.”
Shrugging, Goku stood, taking Vegeta with him despite the noise of protest. He sat him on his feet and grinned. “We can escape notice. Keep our ki down, stay out of sight…. If anyone sees us we can move real fast.”
Vegeta nodded. “All right, I’ll leave the kids a note before we leave. With my…recent behaviors they shouldn’t be surprised. Worried but not surprised.”
“Is there any way we could make them not worry?”
Vegeta turned to Goku, raising a brow. “Since when have you tried to not make people worry about your absences? I think I’m granted one time.”
Both hands came up, defending himself from Vegeta. “Okay, okay. Yeah, you can have one time.” He was grinning though.
Goku gave a grunt as an elbow knocked into his ribs with a little force. “Let’s go. I guess I’m going to be stuck with you now, hm?”
An arm slid around Vegeta’s shoulders and he considered throwing it off, but just crossed his arms over his chest. “Yeah, Vegeta. You’re stuck with me for a long time.”
Rolling his eyes, the Prince strutted off, his companion following along beside him. “I’m going to regret this….”
Goku laughed. “Oh, I don’t know about that. You might come to like it even.”
With the way Goku was grinning, Vegeta was quite sure this would be true. The other Saiyajin had an annoying habit of being right, even when he was wrong.
And Vegeta decided he wasn’t even going to try and decode that in his mind. He was just...happy, actually glad for once. After all, if he wanted anyone to drive him nuts for the rest of his life, he'd rather it be Kakarott.
