Chapter 3
Phoenix
slowly opened his eyes, everything was still dark around him signalizing that
it still was night or either early morning. He didn't sense any danger around them
so why did he wake up? He shrugged and was about to go back to sleep when he
noticed two things; 1: Takao was not sleeping next to him and 2: The tent was
zipped open, letting in the slight breeze through the small opening.
Then
something else registered in his brain, something that unclouded his sleepy
mind and made him alert right in an instance.
Someone
was out there and that someone was crying, Phoenix put two and two together
when he crawled out of the tent. He took in his surroundings, the fire was
still burning weakly, and a chilly wind ruffled his clothes. And then he
spotted him. He was sitting with his back against on of the large trees that
surrounded them. His knees were drawn up encircled by his arms. His head rested
on them face down. He could see the soft shaking of the boy's shoulders with
every sob he heard him make.
"Takao?",
Phoenix said softly standing in front of the teen looking down on him.
Takao
looked up, hurriedly wiping his already red and swollen eyes.
"I
...................... ehm", he stammered.
Phoenix
kneeled down in front of him and took his still rubbing hands from his eyes.
"Stop
rubbing or your eyes will get sore".
Takao
looked down, ashamed about the fact that Phoenix had caught him practically bawling
his eyes out. It was not something he could've helped though. All the time it
had been to hectic to reasonably think about what had happened. Simply because
there hadn't been time to think straight, after Phoenix had taken him to that
cabin they had been in a hurry to get out of Bay City, even when they settled
down in the high hills of Nagi, he had been busy with setting up the fire and
such. But when his eyes had closed and he had drifted off to sleep, the events of
the previous day had played back over and over again in his dreams, nightmares
about the deaths of his brother and grandfather had plagued him till he had
woken up drenched in sweat and shaking all over. All the hurt he had felt came
out and so he went outside and that's how the older teen had found him.
"It's
nothing", Takao whispered in a cracked voice, he felt fresh tears in his
eyes threatening to fall down but he blinked them away as good as he could. He didn’t
want for Phoenix to see him cry as a baby for a second time.
Phoenix
noticed Takao's struggle against the tears and put a hand on his sweaterclad
shoulder, he was shocked by how damp and cold it felt. Now that he looked
better at the blue haired boy he saw he was also shivering slightly from cold.
"Come
on, let's get you inside, you don't want to get sick I assume", he hoisted
the boy up by his arms and took him with him into the tent.
They sat
down but Takao still refused to meet Phoenix' eyes.
"Take
your sweater and t-shirt off", Phoenix said matter of factly.
"W...what?",
Takao said still not looking up.
"You
heard me, take the sweater and t-shirt off. They're damp with your sweat and
its causing for you to be cold. So take them off and we can let them dry,
"Phoenix said taking the hem of his own sweater and with one swift
movement he took it off and handed it to Takao, "You can wear mine for the
night"
Takao
looked at Phoenix from the corner of his eye and noticed he was only wearing a flimsy
sleeveless t-shirt now and his jeans.
"But
what about you?”
"I
can handle a little cold"
Takao
pulled the black sweater over his head and was engulfed in an immense warmth
that seemed almost impossible. He wrapped his arms around himself.
"Takao?"
He didn't
look up; his cheeks were flustered with embarrassment once again.
"Phoenix
let out a somewhat frustrated sigh and scooted closer to the blue haired teen.
He took his chin in his hand and forced him to look up and meet his gaze. He
was taken aback by the sadness and hurt so very evident in those sparkling blue
orbs that still misted over with unshed tears.
"You
don't have to hold back, it is okay to cry", Phoenix said softly as he
released Takao's chin. He saw the boy struggle weakly against the fresh tears
and failing miserable.
"It
hurts...................just hurts so much", Takao whimpered as a sob
wrecked his body.
"Want
to talk about it?"
"I
just................I just miss them that's all, I witnessed their
killings..............I.................I saw them die before my very
eyes......and I............", and that's when he completely broke down
again, shoulders shaking with the heavy sobs that escaped his throat. He hid
his face in his hands as he wept.
"I'm
sorry", he kept on repeating that and Phoenix felt just a tad uncomfortable
for a second but then he made a decision. He wrapped his arms around the
shaking boy albeit a bit awkwardly and held him tight.
"I'm
sorry", Phoenix could feel the boy tremble in his arms.
"What
are you sorry for?"
"I......................I
couldn't......................couldn't save them...................they killed
them.............Voltaire's guards.", Takao stuttered calming down
somewhat.
"Who
did they kill?", Phoenix asked softly, not letting go of the one in his
arms.
"My
brother and my Grandfather.............Those guards they came for me, some one
reported me........", Takao was silent for a brief moment, "And
well we put up a fight but they were with
more and they killed them both, they were standing up for me...."
Phoenix
scowled very darkly, so that bastard Voltaire had murdered Takao's relatives
through his guards just because they were trying to keep Takao save from his
grasp. Phoenix frowned; his own flesh and blood..............his family was
cursed with the likes of Voltaire in their middle. He briefly wondered what
Takao would say if he would find out Voltaire and he were relatives.
"Phoenix?"
"Yeah"
"I.....Thank
you", Takao said blushing as he detached himself from the young adult (1).
"We
should go to sleep", was all he got for an answer as he witnessed Phoenix
laying down with his back to him.
Takao lay
down as well and observed the ceiling of the tent for a while before he drifted
off in a dreamless sleep. Phoenix turned to his other side facing the youth
next to him. He blamed the half asleep state he was in for his following
actions. He wrapped his arms around Takao who snuggled deeper into his embrace.
But deep
down inside he knew that this was not to blame on the sleepy state he was in,
he liked the boy.............allot.
*************************************************************************************
When
Takao woke up for the second time it was already morning, birds were chirping
their tunes outside. Rain was softly falling on the tent making a soft ticking
noise. He saw Phoenix sitting up reading a magazine.
"Morning",
he greeted softly.
Phoenix just nodded in acknowledgement and
pointed to a corner in the tent, "Help yourself"
Takao
looked at the plastic bag, there were sandwiches and milk. Gratefully he took a
sandwich and some milk before he sat back down next to Phoenix.
"Went
to the store and picked some food up, also brought you some new clothes that
will fit you better then mine and I can have mine back"
Takao
swallowed the bite he had in his mouth when Phoenix handed him another plastic
bag.
In it
were two sets of clothes, 2 pair of blue jeans , one very similar to the one of
Phoenix that he was currently wearing with the pockets on the side, there were
also two sweaters, one was a light blue with a blue stripe over the chest and
the other was a rich dark blue with a tribal print. He noticed a black belt some
socks and underwear.
Takao
blushed, "I don't know how to pay you back for all of this
since..........", but Phoenix stopped him.
"I
can afford it easily, don't bother"
Takao
said nothing after that.
"Eh
well thanks then.............................hum is blue your favorite
color?", Takao asked.
"No
not really “Phoenix said looking up from his magazine staring at the boys
rapidly reddening face as he said; "But it looks very good on you"
He
smirked and returned to his reading.
"Aren't
you going to get changed?"
Takao listened,
it was still raining outside albeit a little less but he couldn't go out and
change meaning he had to change in the tent.
Phoenix
turned his back to the boy sensing his discomfort. "I won't peek I
promise", he said grinning.
Takao's
face heated up again as he hastily took off Phoenix' clothes and changed into the
blue pocket jeans and the dark blue
sweater so fast that he probably had set a new world record!
"Done
", he said hastily", the clothes fitted him perfectly and Takao
briefly wondered how Phoenix could've managed to know his size. The sweater was
really nice and warm but it had one disadvantage, his neck was bare since there
was a normal collar on it. Unconsciously he laid a hand over the mark that was
now very visible for others to see.
"Come
here", Phoenix said. Takao crawled over to him and sat down on his knees
before him.
"Now
let's see if I picked the right shade for this", Phoenix said taking a
little tube form another plastic bag that Takao hadn’t noticed earlier. He
squeezed some of the substance on his fingers and softly traced the mark in Takao's
neck.
"Tilt
your head a little", Phoenix said applying some more of the creamy
substance till the mark seemed to be invisible.
"Just
how I figured....", Phoenix held up a little mirror and Takao looked at
his reflection in amazement, the mark was gone! Concealed and hidden by the
creamy substance that seemed to melt with his skin.
"Wow",
he said.
"Yes
not bad at all", Phoenix sat taking something long and silky from the same
bag as the tube had come out.
He
wrapped the silky item around Takao's neck; it was a scarf similar to his own only
in a very light almost silvery blue color.
"Blue
really suits you", he trailed off as he shamelessly observed Takao's face
that had the lovely color of a tomato once again.
"You
seem to blush a lot around me", Phoenix grinned
"Err",
Takao stammered.
Phoenix smiled
slightly as he trailed a finger over the bridge of Takao's nose; he noticed
that the teen followed him with his eyes.
Takao
felt dizzy, Phoenix was so close to him, he felt a definite spark in his stomach,
a spark of attraction towards the older man, it felt like if gravity pulled his
gaze to the flaming red orbs that were staring intensely at him as he saw a
pale slender finger travel further down his nose, over his mouth lingering there
for a second before it went further down under his chin lifting his head up
just a little. Flaming red clashed with sparkling blue as Phoenix stared into
the boys eyes moving closer to him.
"I
don't know why but you excite me", he whispered huskily.
Takao felt his ears grow hot when he felt
Phoenix' breath on his face and as the words registered in his already foggy
mind.
"You're
feeling better then yesterday?” Phoenix released his chin and sat back with a
knowing smirk on his face.
"Y...yeah
a bit"
"Good
then we must leave now. It’s best to travel early till noon and then take a
break, and travel further between 6 pm and 12 am"
"Why?"
Takao asked as he stood up, he noticed the rain had stopped so he followed Phoenix
outside.
"In
between those guards will roam the streets searching for the likes of us, after
six the streets are deserted mostly with this evening curfew that has been
going on since that bastard became Emperor.
"Takao
nodded as he helped Phoenix fold the tent which was dry despite the rain from
earlier and that was a something unusual to Takao but he didn’t pay more
attention to it. Phoenix was right though, he remembered that he never went
outside after 6 even in the summer when it was hot.
They put
the little luggage they had and the tent in the storage room under the cycle
seat. Phoenix hopped on and put his helmet on his head.
Takao had
put on the leather jacked Phoenix had given him when they met and his helmet.
"So
now that you drove on this baby with me you can sit in the back right?"
Takao
hesitated for a moment before he said; "Err well yeah
but..................but I’d rather sit in the front.........it looks safer
like that"
"Fine",
Phoenix said with a smirk although unnoticed by Takao.
"To
be honest", he said as he felt Takao lean back into him uneasily at first
but then he felt him relax against him, "I like it when you're sitting so
close in front of me", he finished before he stepped on the gas and drove
away with an enormous speed.
Takao couldn’t
help but chuckle as he relaxed completely against Phoenix' warm chest, He had
to agree with him, this felt really nice indeed!
*****************************************************************
A few
hours later they drove into a small city called Tazuku, Phoenix decided to
drive to the outskirts of the city but not to far from the stores. He found a nice deserted corner at
the end of the large park. He hid the cycle in a particular large rosebush.
Takao
looked around, it seemed as if the people never came to this side of the beautiful
park, the plants were growing freely around a small clear lake. They would stay
here till they could travel further along the road of their adventure.
Takao
breathed in the fresh air when the sound of the small TV reached his ears; he
heard a mention of his name and sat down next to Phoenix who was watching the
news.
"15
year old Kinomiya Takao is still missing, there
has been no sign of him since that fateful evening when the residents of
Bay /city were shocked by a rude killing in the ?Kinomiya /dojo., and while he
is still missing, Voltaire is still hunting down the Forbidden more fiercely
everyday. He says they have to pay for Takao’s escape if they won’t tell him
where the boy is. His guards are searching all over the country for the boy and
kill everyone that comes in their way Forbidden or not. Its total chaos. They dug
up a picture from the teen in the dojo that has been broadcasted all over the
nation, posters with his name and high rewards hang in every district. Just how
long will young Kinomiya be able to hide from this cruel world? On other news
today, the world............."
Phoenix shut
the TV off and looked at Takao for a moment.
"This
is bad"
Takao was
shocked, so they had raided his home and took his picture so everyone knew who
to chase? , he swallowed.
"Don’t
worry I have a plan..................", Phoenix said standing up, "You
stay here don't go anywhere and wait till I get back"
"What
are you going to do?"
"Later.........................just
stay here and don't do anything stupid"
Takao sighed
as he watched the older boy walk away from him, he took the little portable TV
with him to a large stone near the water and sat down. He switched some
channels. There was a Go(2) tournament going on. Strange how life could just go
on in sad and violent times like these, Takao thought to himself.
How would
his friends be? Kyouyu and Max?
"Max"
Takao said softly.
He
wondered why Max had broken his word and if he really was the one that reported
him, some how his mind refused to believe it. He wanted to believe it, he
wanted to hate max with all his might but he couldn't. Takao didn’t like the
word hate; it was such a big word. He couldn’t really hate Maxi, resent him yes
but hate no while when thinking of Voltaire and his stupid guards made the flow
of pure hatred run through his body. He clutched the blue amulet around his
neck in his fist. He would get his revenge some day in one way or another.
Takao
switched to another channel and listened to the music on it not noticing the
pair of eyes eyeing him like a hawk.
He hid
behind one of the overgrown rosebushes, waiting for the right moment to strike
his target. The minute he had seen the boy's face he knew it had to be the
fugitive Forbidden that everyone was ordered to find and destroy. He would be
the one that would make his master proud! He saw his prey shift so now he was
completely turned backwards to him. This was it, this was the moment, his
moment of triumph where he would write history and earn the so much needed
respect from his great master.
He tip
toed over to his non suspecting victim and surprised the boy when he roughly
grabbed him from behind.
Takao
jumped in shock when someone grabbed him from behind, the little TV fell to the
grass next to the stone he had been sitting on as he struggled against the
persons hold on him.
"I
got you now filthy Forbidden freak!", a raspy voice hissed.
Takao
lost his balance and fell in the water which was surprisingly deep, he needed
air but the person on top of him kept an iron hold on him and kept him under
water.
His lungs
burned with the desperate need for air as he struggled to reach the surface.
"You’re
not escaping me filthy rotten Forbidden", the guard cackled as he watched
the boy’s struggle becoming weaker and weaker due to the lack of air.
Takao
felt the energy drain from him as he though he was about to die, he felt dizzy
and faint. Suddenly two strong arms lifted him up to the surface of the water.
Takao coughed and took big gulps of air as he opened his eyes and met Phoenix’
red ones.
"You
alright?", Phoenix said breathing hard as he helped Takao to the grass on
the edge of the lake.
"Am
now", Takao rasped still catching his breath.
"That
was a guard, some one must’ve recognize you on the cycle even with a helmet
on", Phoenix said standing up and taking the large dagger from the persons
chest. He was dead.
"Y...yeah
killed him", Takao stammered.
"Rather
him then you now isn't it like that? It’s kill or be killed these days, here
take this", Phoenix threw a dagger similar from the one he was cleaning
from the blood.
"They’re
only useful for their weapons", he spat as he stepped over the lifeless
body feel9ing in its pockets. There was nothing more to get.
Takao
looked at the dagger in his hands for a moment, Phoenix was right he should be
glad it wasn’t him lying there, he put the dagger in one of the side pockets of
his wet jeans.
"We
have to go, we can’t stay here, there is no time to change into dry clothes
come on!"
Takao put
his helmet on and sat in front of Phoenix, both boys shivered slightly, although
it was almost spring it was still chilly and especially with wet clothes on a cycle.
"We'll
discuss your disguise when we arrive Arai", Phoenix said before stepping
on the gas.
Takao
trembled from the cold wind and snuggled backwards more into Phoenix who looked
down for a second with a raised eyebrow.
"C...cold!",
Takao said wondering what kind of disguise Phoenix had been talking
about................
