Ed: About time. I haven’t been able to concentrate on my work since the first chapter.

Roy: Oh, I do hope it’s nothing to disturbing… There are just some things I can’t fuck.

Isirius: Wait, weren’t you the one who brought a sheep to the..

Roy: ENOUGH!!! It followed me on its own! It had nothing to do with me, so drop it!

Ed: Heh, heh, baaaa.

Roy: *evil grin* I wouldn’t get too cocky Fullmetal, Hughes should be back any minute with a copy of the script. A little minor editing and…

Isirius: Hah! You mean this script?

Ed: You’re not holding anything.

Isirius: Exactly! I’m making this up as I go! There’s nothing to steal but my brain!

Maes: Sorry Roy, all I could find was this empty void.

Chapter 4: Coincidences.

“Hey Maes, did you get what you were after?” Roy tapped the door of the jeep he was leaning against. Three days in Neservetin had revealed nothing pertinent to Al’s disappearance, and anti-military sentiment ran strong in the town. Hughes had been haunting the local tavern trying to find someone with any idea where Al could have gone.

“Actually, yes. Seems people have re-thought their stance on supporting our investigation. Apparently, some little girl lieutenant by the name of Anderson has also been asking around, and not taking no for an answer. Made something of a disturbance last night, and now everyone’s singing like canaries.”

“I don’t recall any Andersons in the group we brought down, do you?” Roy asked, although he knew the answer.

“Seems we’re not the only ones who miss him, Roy.” Maes grinned. He hadn’t told the general about his phone call to Winry. Ever since Ed had disappeared, the mere whisper of his name had set Roy off like a bottle rocket. But then if anyone could find Al, it was Ed. He figured that what Roy didn’t know wouldn’t make Roy hurt him.

Curious though, why had everyone insisted that it was a girl questioning them? Would Ed have sent someone else? The prospect didn’t seem likely, Ed was just too damn protective of Al to leave it for someone else. So why the girl?

“So, do we have any ideas on who she is?”

“Not yet, but we have a fairly good description. If she’s around we’ll find her. Short blonds with inhuman strength can’t be all that common.”

Roy just looked at him. Hughes couldn’t possibly be making fun of him, could he?

“What do you mean ‘inhuman strength’?”

“Well, apparently she got into an arm-wrestling match with the blacksmith. Had him pinned in three seconds, broke the table, and almost took his arm off. He also happens to be the most cooperative right now.”

“I see. Find her. I want to know who she is, where she’s from, and what the hell she’s doing here within the next hour. Now, what about Al?”

“Hmmm… seems there’s a private gentleman with a good stock of books in town. Al has been trying to get access to his library. Man’s name is Caleb. He was supposed to meet Al at the bar the afternoon he disappeared. Al never showed up.”

“They’re letting Al into bars?” Mustang couldn’t suppress his grin.

“Yeah, go figure. Apparently he made friends with the owner’s daughter and got permission to go in under her supervision.” Hughes chuckle was strained. “That guy really has it hard. He’s too innocent looking. When he was with Ed, no one would dare say no to them. But on his own…”

Roy suppressed the urge to smash something. Damn Fullmetal. That kid had no right to run out on his obligations like that. Roy was beginning to doubt that there had been a ‘backlash’. Maybe Ed just couldn’t look at Al without feeling guilty. But that was still no reason to skip out on his duty. Hughes was right that Al looked too innocent. It made things a lot harder on Al than they had ever been for Ed. Ed had the look of someone you don’t mess with, a hardened shell. Al looked like a sweet kid. It was useful for making people let down their guard, but all too often it had kept people underestimating him until it was far too late. And it was taking its toll on him.

“Find me the girl, Maes.”

Sarah ducked back down the alley from where she’d sat listening. Hughes hadn’t found anything she didn’t already know, and now he was on her trail. She should have used what she’d learned earlier, and then she would be gone by the time he found out where she was staying. As it was, now she’d have to detour to her motel room to pick up her stuff and then find somewhere to stash it, all the while avoiding any military personnel.

And she’d have to lose the uniform. She’d picked it up once on her way through central, and it had been very useful, but if someone saw her with it now she was toast. Not to mention charbroiled. If Mustang got ahold of her, who knew what he would do. She would have to work fast if she was to…

“So, did you find what you were after?”

She froze. How could she not have heard Hughes slipping up behind her?

“Actually, I should be thanking you for saving me the trouble of loosening up peoples tongues. Tell me your name so I can thank you properly.”

I need to move. He must have waited for Mustang to leave. At least he’s alone now. If I can make the other end of the alley I think I can lose him.

“I’m called Sarah.” What, don’t recognize me Hughes? she thought, a little bitter but not daring to turn around and give him the chance.

“Ah, so you’re the little girl I spoke to on the phone. I take it you forgot to tell Ed.”

“…He couldn’t get her as quickly, so I came. He was too far away.”

“Of course. Are you going to spend our entire conversation staring at the wall?”

“Well it does have some nicely made bricks in it. Very fine quality.” Well, now what? If I move an inch he’ll have a blade in my back. But if I don’t get out of here soon…

Headlights blinked on in front of her, blocking the other exit. A tall silhouette made its way towards her, a familiar chuckle just barely reaching her ears. And there was nothing she could do, she was stuck like a wide eyed deer, her whole world going up in ash as the one person she never wanted to see again came into focus.

The Smirk on Mustang’s face only grew as he took in the golden hair and eyes, the full lips trembling in fear, the uniform barely concealing curves at hip and breast.

“Why, Ed, when did you take up cross-dressing?”
