Duo had been walking for days it seemed; longer maybe, in reality it really had been days, but he didn’t know for sure. After about an hour of flying on the first night he’d fallen out of the sky like a wounded duck and decided to walk. Luckily he’d only hit one tree on the way down and hadn’t broken anything, although he was still unsure how. His wounded knee gave out on him, yet again; and he sank sharply to the soggy ground. It had been raining, no, pouring, for hours now and the chilly summer rain still felt warm against his hot flesh. He struggled to his feet after a moment, even though the cool mud felt wonderful against his fevered face and started walking again, staggered a couple steps before pitching forward again and tumbling down a steep embankment, straight into a raging river. The swift current carried him quickly downstream as he slammed into rocks, tree branches and other debris, struggling to find a footing in the deep water. He slammed into something solid, but not as hard as the rocks and felled trees had been. Something cold and strong wrapped around his body and lifted him from the angry waters. Duo looked weakly to see what was holding him and saw…that water supported him. Water had a body and legs and arms and a face…the face blinked at him, watery lids closing over watery orbs. The being shook back a few strands of watery hair from its watery cheek. It gripped him tightly and sank lower in the water. Duo fought back as it tried to pull him under, catching it in the head with his elbow. A grimace of pain crossed its face and Duo would have smirked but he was too tired, too hurt, and too scared. The water sprite trickled away suddenly, leaving him to splash back into the torrent below. He struggled once more to stay above water, his injuries screaming in pain as he desperately treaded water, his lungs burning with the lack of air and swallowed water. His head slipped below the waterline and he knew that this time would be his last. Bubbles trickled out of his mouth in a steady stream, his body would kill him when it inhaled a deep lungful of water with its next attempted breath.

=Trust me.= a familiar voice said. =I won’t let you drown. Trust me.= Strong arms wrapped around him and he knew that it was the water sprite, just why it was familiar he couldn’t place. The voice was more felt than heard, as if the sound of it resonated from within his bones. He felt himself traveling through the water and his tortured lungs gave way, the last of his breath streaming from his body. He kept his lungs empty for as long as he could, only the space of a few heartbeats, before his mouth opened, his chest contracted and…another mouth pressed onto his abruptly, breathing sweet air into his burning lungs. It seemed thicker than it should have been, but was refreshing and clean nonetheless. They stayed with lips locked, air passing from the water sprite to its captive as they speed through the rushing water. Duo was petrified that they’d hit a branch or rock at the breakneck speed they were traveling and that would be the end.
*Does it really matter, I would have drowned anyway.* Duo thought to himself hazily.

They finally crested the surface of the water and headed towards the far shore, lips still locked. The sprite lay on it’s back in the shallow water, Duo on his hands and knees above. The sprite melted away into the water suddenly and Duo felt his entire body panic and spasm. A strong arm wrapped around his waist holding him up, pressing against his convulsing muscles as he coughed and puked up the water that had been in his lungs. The ‘air’ was really water that the sprite had fed his lungs to keep him alive. He found that he was sobbing but didn’t really care. The solid form helped him to stagger forward and he pushed away slightly to stand on his own and continued forward.

=“Stay here with me Duo.”= the sprite pleaded. The voice was now partly coming from within him and partly spoken around him.

“I can’t I have to go. He’ll find me, I have to leave. They’ll hurt me again.” He muttered softly as he crumpled to the ground. “Please don’t hurt, please stop.” He cried curling into a ball. A warm hand rested on his back and then scooped him from the mud. “Don’t hurt, don’t hurt, don’t hurt.” He begged as he was cradled against a warm body and taken under shelter, out of the still pouring rain.

“My word you did a number on yourself.” Heero exclaimed softly as he laid the slim boy onto a bedroll and lit a couple lamps in his canvas tent. He pulled the wet leather vest from his body and untied the bracers. He struggled with the tight shirt a moment before succeeding in pulling it off gently and moving to the tight pants. Large purple eyes stared up at him in fear.

“Well Duo you sure put yourself through hell.” Heero chided and slipped the garment off with a squelching sound. He moved onto his own wet clothes. “Me too. I came out here to find you.”

“Why?” the braided-boy croaked. Heero sighed.

“Because I don’t want you to get hurt and I knew that you couldn’t get far on your own.” Heero told him now completely naked. He reached for a few thick towels and began to dry Duo’s body with them, the young man pulling away from him in fear. Heero ignored the reaction and continued his task until finished and then moved on to himself. He lifted Duo gently into a sitting position and slid behind him, holding him up with his own lithe body. Duo began to sob again. Heero worked on untangling his long hair and pressing the water from it, pulling twigs and leaves out as he went. He combed his fingers through it gently, though without a brush it was hopeless. His fingers paused as he noticed a raised scar on the back of Duo’s neck. The letters O and Z seemed to have been branded into the back to the boy’s neck. He let his fingers trace over the scar a moment, Duo shivered violently around his sobs and pulled away from his touch with a loud whimper. Heero then began to braid his hair slowly without saying a word. Duo had calmed a little by the time he’d finished, but he still shivered uncontrollably. He lay the boy back onto the mat and pulled thick covers over him and crawled in beside him.

“There’s only one bedroll and more importantly you’re freezing.” He stated matter-of-factly and wrapped his arms around the pale boy and pulled him close to the burning heat of his body.
“You feel like you already have one foot in the grave Duo.” He said and shivered. Duo pushed against him frantically, tears rolling down his face again.

“Let go! Let me go! Please!” his voice was small and cracked and terrified and he hated it. Hated his weakness, hated his fear, hated himself.

“Duo, I’m not going to let you go. You’re sick and you need to be kept warm, so give it up and just go to sleep, I’ll make us something to eat and check your injuries in the morning when it stops raining.” Heero commanded softly.

“Please…please…” the other boy continued to beg, sobbing as he fought weakly. “Get off me, please just leave me alone. Don’t hurt me! Please don’t hurt me!”

“I won’t hurt you Duo, I promise I won’t.” Heero spoke gently and ran a soothing hand over the other’s back. He still sobbed, but slowly he began to cling to the elf instead of pushing away. He looked up into Heero’s eyes, his violet depths clearer than they had been since Heero had found him in the river.

“Heero…” he spoke his voice a low whisper, wrapping an arm around the other’s chest, deeply inhaling the scent of moist soil. “Don’t hurt me okay. Just don’t hurt me. I’ll kill you if you hurt me. I’ll kill you slowly, agonizingly and you’ll beg for death long before it comes to you. Don’t hurt me. Just don’t hurt me.” He begged as his eyes slid shut and he leaned against Heero’s body tiredly. He was asleep almost immediately.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thing Duo noticed when he woke up was that he hurt everywhere, he couldn’t seem to find the will to open his eyes. Then next was that he was warm and covered in softness. The third thing he felt was an arm wrapped around his waist and his head pillowed against the other, the arm at his waist tightened slightly. Duo’s eyes flew open and he stared upwards. He couldn’t see very far and his terror gripped mind tried desperately to place where he was.
*A tent.* he realized. *It rained last night.* he hated being in tents. Hated being inside buildings. He felt confined and trapped, with no way out. *In a tent or out, you’re still trapped. You’re more trapped now than you were in The…* he stopped himself. *Now you can see your freedom, taste it every time you look around you.* he told himself and shuddered unable to stop his thoughts. *Oh Gods, The Box!!* his body shook with dread as memories flooded him.
//“Behave boy!!” a harsh voice yelled and its owner delivered a hard blow to Duo’s face, blackening his eye.//
Duo sobbed brokenly as his mind replayed the horrible moments from his past.
//“Fuck off you ass-munching, shit-eater!!” Duo retorted and silently cursed once again his small, effeminate frame. Sixteen years old and he was still as slim as when he was twelve or thirteen. The man standing before him grinned evilly and Duo fought against the shiver that tried to crawl up his spine. The man spun him around and kicked him roughly to the floor. He pounced before Duo could move and gripped his hips painfully. The man bit him on one of his naked ass cheeks, drawing blood. Duo cried out in pain and shock. “What in the Abyss are you doing?!” He raged. The man chuckled.
“I’m munching ass.” He declared with another evil laugh.
“Well fucking stop and let me go!!” Duo yelled and struggled to get away. The man gripped him hard, bruising the flesh at his hips. Duo felt something warm and wet slid into his body and his head shot up in shock.
“Get the fuck off me you gross, disgusting pervert!! Stop it you horny old bastard!!” he screamed at the top of his lungs, trying to wiggle away from the invading tongue. Duo kicked a leg backwards and caught him in the chest.
“Little fucking…That’s it! Get The Box!” he yelled in anger and snatched a handful of Duo’s hair in his grubby fist. “I’m your pimp now bitch. I’m your god. Don’t piss me off.” He warned.
Duo bit, scratched, kicked, hit, cursed, did everything he could think of to get away but it did no good. Some of the lackeys that worked for the vile man moved forward and pinned Duo to the floor. One of the other men in the room left and came back with a stack of boards but Duo didn’t notice at first. He was trying to get away from the pimp that held him down, violating his young body with his disgusting tongue. The pimp pulled his head back painfully by his braid once more and one of the others punched him hard. He punched again and again and again, four times in all before Duo finally fell limply to the floor with a groan.
“Little shit’s got some staying power. That didn’t even knock him out.” He heard someone mutter but couldn’t place where it was as he tried to fight off the pain in his head with a few good shakes. He was completely disoriented when someone lifted him bodily around his waist and slammed him roughly onto a slab of wood. They held him on all fours and hurriedly tied his arms onto the wood with leather straps that covered him from wrist to elbow. He realized what was happening started screaming again lashing out as they tried to strap his legs down.
“Got some long legs. Pretty.” Someone commented.
“Fuck off!! Quit looking at my legs!” he demanded. A large fist connected with the back of his head and he slumped down slightly as stars danced over him and a large hand gripped his backside firmly. He knew they were strapping his knees to the board with more wide leather straps, but he couldn’t seem to make his body do anything about it around his hazy of pain. A second board was fitted into the back grove of the one Duo was strapped to and they jerked his ankles up and towards his hips, wrapping him in leather from ankle to mid-calf so he was pressed flush against the wood. Another board was fitted onto one side, and another over top of him. Wide leather straps crisscrossed over his chest to form an X as he began to scream again. He let fly a few words that he remembered from his dreams, dark, evil words of hate and anger. They just laughed
“Got a mouth on him, don’t he?” they jested and pulled the straps around his chest tighter before fitting on the last two pieces of wood into their groves and sealing him in total darkness. There was silence for few long moments before a loud banging sound made him jump in fear. It stopped and then began again shortly.
*They’re nailing me in!!* he realized in horror and began to struggle against his bonds again. He cried aloud in fear when he was tipped onto one side and the nailing continued. He was flipped so that he was upside-down and flipped again and finally righted. He was jolted again and he had the sensation that he’d been lifted and carried as his prison swayed around him. He was settled with a thump and then all sound faded away.
Days, a week, more. Duo had no idea how long he lay tied in The Box. He knew that the walls couldn’t get any tighter and it couldn’t get any darker. He was in a constant state of near panic. He never let himself get into a place he couldn’t get out of, not a building, not a room, not an alleyway, he always left himself a way out and here he had none. Only the six small walls that closed around him more with each passing moment. He screamed, he cried, he pleaded, he struggled, he promised, he threatened, not knowing if they heard. And finally he was just silent as the walls shrank and throbbed around him and the darkness ate at his soul.
A hinged door opened upwards and dim light flooded in, blinding Duo in its harshness as he squeezed his eyes shut. “Hey Pretty, how ‘bout some water?” a rough voice asked and he whimpered softly. “Well see thing is ya gotta work to be feed. An since ya ‘aven’t worked ya cain’t eat. So how’s ‘bout you do a little job fer me an then yous kin eat?” he asked peering into the hole. Duo ran a dry tongue over his dry, cracked lips hesitating. The man raised a waterskin and shook it gently, sloshing the liquid inside. Duo’s eyes grew wide and he nodded slowly at the sound. He chuckled slightly. “That’s what Oi thought. Now rules are, NO biting and you have to swallow when ur done. Got that?” He asked.
Duo shook his head in confusion. Duo hadn’t had a normal life, at the time when most kids his age were getting ‘The Talk’, if they didn’t already know, he’d been living in a cave. He knew that men and women got together to have babies and he knew that the women had the babies, but he was still mostly unclear as to the particulars of this great mystery.
“Thas just beautiful ya know. Em sure you’ll catch on. Just suck hard an ya cain’t go wrong.” He said jovial and his face pulled back. It was replaced with what was unmistakable the man’s genitals. Duo tired to pull back but had no room to move and was tied down. He turned his face to one side to avoid the disgusting man when he banged on the top loudly causing Duo to jump in fear and cry out. He pulled back.
“Not so thirty are ya Pretty? Ya will be, there’s no escapin’ that.” With that he slammed the window shut, plunging Duo into darkness once more.
“Hey Pretty, how ‘bout some water?” It was the same as last time and the time before that and the time before that. Only this time Duo nodded weakly instead of shaking his head no.//
“Morning Duo. Do you want some water?” Heero asked him sitting up once he realized the other boy was awake.
“No!” He wailed and tried to crawl backwards, but Heero grabbed him gently.
“Duo, Duo! Its okay. Its okay now.” The elf spoke softly and Duo’s eyes seemed to focus on the small room around him. He looked up at Heero in fear. “Duo?” He said questioningly.
“What?” the longhaired boy croaked out.
“Do you want a drink of water?” He asked again cautiously and Duo nodded weakly. Heero pressed the waterskin into his shaking hands and the other boy took a long swallow from it. Heero took it back gently. “Come on, lets get you a real bath and get your hair straightened out.” Heero smiled warmly at the timid young man and left the tent.
Duo sat listening to Heero wander around the campsite. He was humming softly to himself. Duo peaked his head slowly out of the entrance to the tent and watched the elf bustle around.
*He certainly seems happy. I wonder why?* Duo thought suspiciously. *I ran away from his village because of someone who is apparently a friend of his, have dark secrets I keep from him and he knows it, drug him through most of the forest over a course of days, and yet doesn’t seem to mind. What the hell was up with that river sprite and how the hell are they connected? He stands there humming, butt-ass-naked STILL and grins from ear to fucking ear…what does he know that I don’t?* Duo wondered. *What’s he got on me? How’s he going to use it against me and what’s he going to gain from it?*
“Why did you save me?” He asked softly causing the elf to jump.
“Like I said I didn’t want you to get harmed.” He stated.
“Okay, let me rephrase that. WHY do you care if I get hurt?” Duo countered.
“I already said I just want to help you, to be your friend.” Heero told him in irritation.
“And I don’t buy that load of shit! You don’t know me, why would you want to be friends with me!?” Duo said heatedly as he drug himself limping out of the tent to stand before the shorter elf.
“Why not?” Heero asked angrily stepping towards him. Duo stepped back hurriedly, matching his pace. “Why can’t you accept that someone just wants to help you? Why can’t I just like you and want to get to know you better? Why do you have to think I’m out to get you, which you obviously do despite the fact that I’ve chased after you over days worth of this forest in the pouring rain to make sure you’re alright?!” Heero stopped them about a foot away from a large oak tree.
“Because trusting people only gets me screwed!” Duo argued enraged as the pressed his face towards Heero’s in anger. Heero grabbed him by the arms and pushed him against the tree roughly.
“Figuratively or literally?” Heero whispered softly and leaned in to nibble along Duo’s jaw-line. Duo tried to jerk his head away, but Heero followed. He stopped after a moment to look at Duo, whose eyes were wide with fear. “It wasn’t just the bugbears was it?” He asked. “I saw the scar on the back of your neck. I’ve seen it before in Oz, I know what it means.” He said in concern.
“Oh…” Duo breathed quietly. “Now I understand. I suppose that it’s only right.” he said stiffly and wrapped his arms around Heero waist tightly before pressing against his mouth for a hard, short kiss, which took the dark-haired elf by surprise. “What about the others?” He asked breathless once he pulled back.
“Others?” Heero repeated in question.
“Yeah, I remember Zechs saying something about doing some work around the village, which is fine, but does he want me too? What about Wufei?” He asked and shivered. Heero looked confused, which in turn confused him. “Do the three of you want to share or just do singles? What’s the price we’re talking? How about four times each, one for each month I was a prisoner? That’s sixteen times, you three guys and the one chick, if she or one of the others doesn’t want it, I’ll throw in two more so everyone gets an even number, that sound good? Then we’ll be even okay, after this you’ll let me leave and I won’t owe any of you anything, got it?” Duo spouted.
“I didn’t…I meant…” Heero stuttered while Duo looked at him expectantly. “We…They…I don’t want…”
“They’re not interested fine. Just you then, sixteen times and I’ll help around the village while I’m there, deal?” Duo cut in sharply. Heero shook his head slowly in shock. “What then? What do want?” Duo’s voice broke and he failed to hold back his tears.
“I just want to get to know you.” he replied softly and stepped back. “Hi, I’m Heero Yuy.” He said holding out his hand. Duo stared at him in shock.
*He’s joking right? He doesn’t want…He didn’t…but what…* he thoughts were in a daze as he put out his hand as well. Heero grasped in forearm lightly. “Duo Maxwell.” He whispered softly gripping the other’s forearm as well.
“Pleasure.” Heero stated then turned away and began going about the camp once more. Duo’s lilac eyes never left the dark-eyed elf.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So what’s with you and the water sprite?” Duo asked over lunch. It was the first thing either of them had said since earlier that morning. Heero choked on his food in surprise before finally answering.

“Well…that was me…you’re not human and I’m not entirely an elf.” Heero said nervously. “I’m half water nymph.”

“Aren’t nymphs supposed to be dazzlingly beautiful?” Duo asked.

“Are you saying I’m not?” Heero asked affronted.

“No, no its not that…” Duo said unconvincingly.

“For you information, I am purposely hiding the effects of my nymph blood.” Heero defended himself.

“Why?” Duo asked.

“People tend to…they don’t see me, not the real me, they just see how good I look.” He said sadly. “Even afterwards, they don’t see me they see the memory of my nymph blood, I see my imperfections, why can’t they? They follow me around declaring their undying love and…none of it is real…its all fake so I hide away what I am, I hide for so long that…that…”

“That you feel fake too. And you almost can’t remember how you really look. And as much as you wish you were normal, you start to miss that other part of you.” He whispered and Heero looked at him in shock. “They see how good you look and how ugly I look and completely miss who we really are, well aren’t we a pair.” He said laughingly.

“Ugly?” Heero wondered aloud. “That I just can’t imagine.”

“I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours.” Duo prompted with a smirk.

“Okay.” Heero agreed and Duo’s smile fell rapidly. *He didn’t expect me to say yes* Heero realized. He took off his clothes walked to the river and stood waist deep, looking at Duo on the bank. He lowered himself into the water slowly and stayed under for a few moments. He let loose the hold he had over his mother’s blood, let it run wild in his veins and stood slowly to his feet. The water trailed down his golden skin in multi-hued drops, dipping into the curves and hollows of his body. His muscles rippled under his skin enticingly. He reached up and pushed a lock of dripping hair out of his gorgeous deep-blue eyes, fingers gracefully tucking it behind his pointed, swept-back ear. He blinked up at Duo nervously.

Duo’s jaw dropped at the sight of the creature emerging from the river. He was perfect in every single way, the way the breeze blew by him, the water running over his flesh, the sun on his back, his eyes slowly blinking up at Duo, his ears(Duo closed his mouth)…his ears were just a bit too long for Duo’s taste, he still had that scar on his shoulder, his hair still looked like he’d combed it with a pine branch three weeks ago.

“You’re still too short.” Duo said folding his arms across his chest. It was Heero’s turn to stand open mouthed. “You’re ears are too long, for the love of the Gods do something, anything with your hair.” Duo continued to complain. Heero smiled widely. Duo sighed, *May as well do this. It was fun while it lasted. Damn me and my big mouth. At least now he’ll let me go home without feeling guilty about it. Guilty? When did I start to feel guilt?* He shrugged of his clothes hurried before turning to Heero, dread written all over his face. He clutched a dagger in one hand and kukri in the other tightly. At his feet sat a bundle of his now dried clothes and some supplies.
“Are you sure about this?” Duo asked. “I’m giving you one last chance to back out. Ignorance is bliss.” Heero nodded his head to continue. “Run away, scream, hate me, whatever, but please just don’t try to kill me. I’m not strong enough to defend myself or get away, I’d hate to have to blast your scrawny ass unconscious. Just don’t try to kill me.” He said sadly. Heero was beginning to get a worried look on his face.
*You have no idea…* Duo thought and willed himself to change.
