Ed's heart felt lighter for the first time in what seemed like
ages as he approached the dorm where his brother waited. As he raced down
the hallway leading to their room he thought about the new possibilities in his
life. He wasn't in trouble with his commanding
officer for his rash behavior; in fact he might actually get something
enjoyable out of it. He had a new lead on the stone, and reason to look
forward to reporting back in, just as he had hoped.
Hope, the word scared him more then a little. His
hopes had been dashed too many times to count. But this time if the
lead didn't pan out he would have some consolation. If he came back empty
handed, this time he would have more then a cold library bench and a meal in the
mess hall to comfort him, if the
colonel decided to take him up on his offer. Ed pushed the door to the dorm room open and
buried his doubts for the moment. He'd have time to think of those later
on the train.
"Hey, Al, we got a new lead on the stone."
Ed called out, waving the folder in the air.
"A new lead?" Al pushed away from the desk he
was sitting at and stood. "So, does this mean the colonel
isn't going to try to punish you? What did he say exactly?"
"You were right, Al," Ed began grudgingly.
"He didn't think it was entirely my fault. He said that I went too
far, but it wasn't really force." Ed looked at his feet and
considered how much he should tell Al about the situation. He wanted to
tell his brother everything...well almost everything they said, maybe
not the things they did...but he wasn't sure where to start.
"Is that it?" Al asked. He walked over to where Ed stood looking
down. He loomed over Ed; the force of
his presence was like a weight on Ed’s mind. "He just wrote the
whole thing off and sent you on a mission?"
"Well, not exactly," Ed looked at the clock on their
shared desk. They only had 45 minutes to
get to the train station and buy tickets for the next train. "Look,
Al, can we talk about this on the train? We should get going if we want
to get there before the lead gets any older."
“Not exactly?” Al
persisted. “What do you mean not
exactly?’
Ed put his hand on his hip, looking up at his brother, and
rolled his eyes in an exaggerated attempt to express his irritation. “I mean there’s more to it then that, but we
really don’t have time for that right now.
I want to catch the next train and we can talk about it then.”
“We can catch the train after that and talk about it
now.” Al leaned back and crossed his
arms over his chest.
“Al!” Ed flailed up at
his brother’s hulking form. “We need to
get going! We’ll have all the time we
need once we are on our way.”
"Alright, brother," Al sounded reluctant, but
he conceded. "But you’re telling me every thing he said once we’re
on the train."
"Fine," Ed turned around sharply and headed
back to the door. "I'll tell you everything on the train.
Let's just get going already!" Al
grabbed their suit case, which he always kept ready to go, and followed Ed
silently out of their room.
The train station at Central was filled with the usual hustle
and bustle. People arriving at their destination and leaving for distant
places; conductors shouting, porters racing to collect baggage, and load
it on to trains or off of trains. Over it all was the hiss of the steam
engines.
Al's determined stride beat a hard, staccato, rhythm behind
Ed. Ed heard the distinctive ring of metal against stone loud and clear
above the cacophony of the train station. He knew he would have to
come clean and tell Al the whole story. He had started this by telling Al
so much in the first place; he couldn't just give his brother half the facts
now and expect him to be satisfied with that. Al deserved better then
that and he was too smart to fall for it anyway, damn it. Al
remained ominously silent while Ed purchased their tickets and they made their
way to the train. Once on board Ed searched for a booth as far from the
other passengers as possible. The train was thankfully low on passengers,
despite the crowds at the station, and it wasn't long before they were seated
in a deserted back corner of the car they had chosen.
Al sat across from Ed and folded his arms over his metal
chest. Ed knew what he wanted without Al voicing the questions, but he
stubbornly refused to open up that easily about his conversation with the
colonel.
"Well, brother," Al leaned forward menacingly.
"Are you going to tell me what he said or do I have to pry it out of
you?"
"Alright," Ed groused. He squirmed a little in his seat then frowned
up at his brother. "You don't have to get bossy. I'll tell
you."
Al seemed to scowl and Ed relented. "At first I
thought he was going to transfer me. He took me to a clean room to talk
to me." Ed blanched as he remembered his near panic and his determination
to plead with the colonel. "He's never needed that much privacy no
matter how dangerous a mission was. I figured he was going to transfer me
and he just didn't want everyone in East
City to hear me argue
with him. But that's not why he wanted privacy."
"Brother," Al gasped and sat back in his seat, with
his arms at his side, as if to brace him self. His tone took on a hard
edge of fury. "What did he say? Did
he do anything to you?!"
Just then the train lurched forward and began its ponderous
march out of the station. Ed hoped the
sudden movement would distract any would be eavesdroppers.
"No! Al, calm down." Ed lowered his
voice then leaned closer to his brother.
Al’s tone concerned him; this wasn’t going to go well if Al wouldn’t see
reason. At least Ed’s reason anyway.
"He just didn't want everyone in East City
to know what happened last night. If we don't keep it down they'll know
anyway."
"Fine, then your explanation of this had better be
good." Al grated out.
"There's nothing to be upset about, Al." Ed's
response came out sounding more like a growl. "He agreed with
you. He said that even though I went too far, I didn't attack him.
He agreed that I didn't do anything to deserve to be punished. He even got me to agree that he was right."
Al’s voice was incredulous.
“Did you just say that the colonel was right?”
Ed was sure the other passengers would hear his teeth
grating. “Yes, Al, you were both right.”
“So why couldn't he say that in his office?" Al demanded.
"Because I was loud and it took a while for him to
convince me." Ed folded his arms across his chest and his frown
deepened into a glare. He couldn’t see a
way to detour Al, other then taking the blame, though it stung his pride to do
so. "It was my fault. Again.
Are you happy now?"
"Not even close brother," Al's tone softened
slightly and he slouched a little in his seat. "But I'll be a lot
closer when you tell me the rest of it. What was so private about the
colonel convincing you that you weren't the only one responsible for what
happened last night?"
Ed blushed a little at that, casting his gaze out the window
as if looking for the best response in the passing scenery, but it offered no
help. He couldn't avoid telling Al the truth, but this conversation
wasn’t going the way he wanted it too and he was suddenly sure Al wasn't going
to be happy about the rest of his news.
"He said he had a mission for me so I asked why he didn't
just send me on it and let it go." Ed hesitated searching for the
right words.
"And his answer was...?" Al prompted.
"He said he wanted to clear things up between us.
He said he wanted me to know he wasn't angry and he wasn't going to punish
me." Ed couldn't think of a way to say it other then just straight
out. "He said he wasn't upset about last night, in fact he kind of
enjoyed it too and he's willing to consider something more between us."
Al was silent for what felt like endless seconds then,
"WHAT?!" He screeched at the top of his voice. Every
other passenger in the car turned toward them.
Panic shot through Ed and he jumped up and waved his arms
frantically. "Al, calm down!"
"Calm down?!" Al screeched again.
"Calm down?! How can you say that? Ed, unless your going to
tell me that you turned him down flat I don't see any reason to be
calm."
"No, why would I turn him down?" Ed
quieted and tried to keep his voice low but it was still harsh. "I
was the one who wanted this in the first place. I came on to him,
remember? You said I could find some comfort, Al. I don't
understand why you're so upset."
"Ed, he's your commanding officer. He's a lot older
then you and as you have pointed out so many times he's a manipulative
bastard." Al had lowered his voice to a fierce growl. He paused as a passenger exited the next car
down. Passing through the door into
their car and moving down between the rows of seats. "He's using you." Al finally
resumed.
"Al, he hasn't done anything to me," Ed
argued. "He said he would consider my offer. He also
said he had a lot of reservations and that he didn't think it was a good
idea. I had to promise that I would honestly consider what we are
risking. I had to promise not to make a decision lightly." Ed watched the man move down the isle out of
the corner of his eye. He noted with
some nervousness that the man chose a seat not far enough from theirs for his
comfort.
"Well so far brother, it doesn't sound like you've
considered it at all." Al spat. "It sounds like you've
already made up your mind. Hasn't it occurred to you that he just said
those things to make you complacent?"
"Yes, it did occur to me," Ed huffed. Geez,
did Al think he was completely stupid?
Did he think that Ed couldn’t handle himself with the colonel? "Why
does it matter? He doesn't need to manipulate me or make me
complacent. I want this. I want him. You can't take
advantage of the willing, Al."
"Really?" Al's tone was scornful. He crossed his arms over his chest doing an
impressive job of looking imposing. "And the fact that he is older,
more experienced, and has authority over you doesn't give him any control or
advantage?"
"Maybe it does, so what?" Ed snarled
back. But at his brother's words doubt slowly curled its icy fingers around
the hope in his heart. What did the colonel have to gain from this?
He could have any woman in Central. Why would he want one inexperienced
teenager, and a male one at that?
"Ed, it's wrong for the colonel to...use you for
his...pleasure." Al choked out.
"Shit, Al," Ed’s lip curled in disgust.
"You make him sound like some kind of creepy pedophile. It's not
like I'm some ten year old kid who doesn't have any...urges of his
own." Ed blushed, but he pressed on.
He wasn’t a child. He could choose to be with someone. Didn’t he have the right to choose who ever
he wanted? "I get - excited and want things whether he's
there or not. I just want to do something about it with him. He
didn't put the idea into my head. I can think for myself you know."
"Yes, I do know," Al pressed. "And
that's what I'm asking you to do, think about it."
Ed felt his defenses rising. The
colonel didn’t need to manipulate Ed in this so why would he? But did he really just want Ed the way Ed
wanted him? Just for pleasure and
release without the worry of unwanted emotional involvements. Or maybe he
was just that big of a pervert. So what did that make Ed? How was
it less perverted for Ed to want someone so much older? After all Ed
wanted an older man, a handsome older man who could make him hard with
just his voice, okay so maybe they were both perverts. But if nobody else
was hurt why shouldn't they be? What harm did it cause if they both
consented and acted willingly? Ed was
stunned to find himself defending the colonel to Al of all people.
“I have been
thinking about it, Al.” Ed’s voice
turned plaintive. “I’ve been thinking
about it a long time. How can he be
manipulating me if it’s an idea that I had first?”
“How do you know that, brother?” Al responded equally plaintive. “Do you remember what first caused you to be
attracted to the colonel? Maybe there
was something that he did to give you this idea? Have you been interested in anyone else?”
“No, but we’ve talked about that already, Al, when would I
have time?” Ed was unrelenting. He wasn’t sure why his need to convince his
brother was so strong, but he couldn’t let it go. He was also starting to see that he might not
win this fight and it made him that much more determined to try. “Why does it matter where the idea first came
from? What matters is that I agree, that
I’m consenting, damn it, Al, I’m the one pushing the idea on him now.”
“How
can you be so sure about that?” Al
replied. “Ed, it’s just not right. It’s not okay for a man his age to be having
-- this kind of a relationship with
someone your age….someone our age.”
Ed
saw red at that. “Now you’re fighting
dirty, Al! You just want to put me on
the defensive by making me think of you in this situation, but if this was the
comfort you wanted I would do anything to get it for you.” Ed declared leaning farther forward and
clenching his hands into fists on his knees.
“Yes,
I’m fighting dirty, Ed,” Al’s voice was muted but harsh. “I’m afraid for you. I’m afraid for your heart and I’ll fight with
everything I have for that.”
Ed
subsided at that, he didn’t want Al to fear for him, but he wasn’t defenseless
either. “Al, I’m not putting my heart
into this just my body,” Ed reached for an explanation. “It’s like sparring. It’s just a release. It’s a way of disconnecting my mind from the
world around me and focusing on the moment.”
Al
sighed, “Fine then, even if your heart isn’t at steak our goals are. The military doesn’t condone this and society
says it’s wrong. You can’t have a
relationship with an older person who
is in authority over you.”
“Why?
Who will stop it? Unless we’re found
out…or betrayed.” Ed refused to be dictated to by bunch of ignorant social
rules. “And it’s not a relationship Al. We’re not dating; I don’t expect him to
propose or something. There’s no strings
attached.”
“Who
will stop it?” Al sounded slightly incredulous.
“Are you saying that I would betray you?
How can you think there are no strings attached? What if something goes wrong between
you? He’s your commanding officer. What if he wants you to…do something and you
refuse? What if he gets mad and you
argue? Do you trust him to not punish
you then? He can interfere in our search for the stone.”
“Al,
if he was going to do that he would have already.” Ed just didn’t see how this made their
situation any different. And Al just
hadn’t seen how, well, nice the
bastard had been this afternoon. “He
knows about the transmutation we performed.
He knows about everything we’ve done.
Sure he manipulates things to his advantage, but if he was really going
to turn against us he could have done that plenty of times already. Besides it’s not like we don’t get mad at
each other and argue anyway. How would
that be different?”
Al
sighed heavily. “Brother, I really don’t
think this is a good idea and I really wish you would just think about this
carefully. In the past he’s never told
our secrets because he gained something from it. I ask again, what would you do if he wanted
something you didn’t? He has more
experience. Do you even know what he
expects from a—a physical relationship?”
Ed
crossed his arms over his chest and a slight pout appeared. They were at a stand off on this he could
tell. He also had to admit that his
brother had a valid point regarding his lack of sexual knowledge. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t get what he
wanted. He resolved to spend sometime
researching the subject when they got back.
Sex was a natural biological function, there had to be books about it at
the library. He just had to placate Al a
little more. “Okay, Al, you have a point
about that. I’ll think about what I’m
willing to do and I’ll be sure to make that clear to him first. But you’re forgetting what you said
yesterday. If I get caught in this he
gets caught too. And he gets in a lot
more trouble.”
“Exactly,”
Al stated firmly. “There’s a whole lot
you don’t know and it bothers me.”
“Alright
already, Al,” Ed turned his head and glared at the back of the strange mans
head sitting a few seats away from them.
“You’ve made your point. I
promise to think about what you’ve said before I do anything for certain about
this.”
Al
sighed, sounding somewhat relieved. “I
just don’t want you to get hurt, Brother.”
“As
long as I’m not emotionally involved how can I get hurt?” Ed asked blithely. Al stared at him for a moment but said
nothing. Ed was suddenly reminded of all
the times he had gotten emotionally involved in situations he planned to stay
out of. He pushed that aside with his
usual stubbornness. That was different;
those were times when others could have been hurt. How was he supposed to not care and just let
others get hurt? This was just sex
between two intelligent, consenting parties.
How could that hurt anyone? Who
would be hurt by that? Mustang?! It wasn’t like he was in love with the
bastard. And there was no way he was
going to be.
“Al,
can we talk about this new mission now?”
Ed tried not to sound peevish but he just couldn’t keep all the
complaint out of his voice.
Al
turned back to him. “Of course we can
brother.” His tone had lightened and he
seemed truly ready to change the subject.
“Tell me about this new lead.”
Ed
heaved a sigh of relief and pulled the folder out of his jacket. “It’s not much of a lead, they never really
are, but we have to check every source right?”
“Right.” Al’s voice held a much more positive note
now. He leaned far forward to look at
the contents of the folder in his brother’s hand. “So tell me what is in Medea (1) that makes
you think we’ll find a lead on the stone there?”
“Rumor
has it that someone there is selling
the stone.” Ed was almost cheerful about
discussing the mission, no matter that it was probably a dead end, he was so
grateful that Al had agreed to change the subject. “It sounds ridiculous, which is probably why
who ever is perpetrating this hoax is still doing it. Nobody in authority will believe it.”
Isn’t
Medea on the northern end of the boarder of Ishbal and Amesteris?” Al sat back and tilted his head to the side
as if considering something. “I thought
that most of the border towns were all but abandoned after Ishbal. Who would be there to by it?”
Ed’s
expression turned dark. “Most of the
border towns were evacuated, but some people have migrated back now that the
war is over. But it would still be the
perfect place for some con artist to cheat people. It’s hardly likely that the government would
send anyone important to investigate a petty scam, especially if they believed
it to be a hoax.” Ed leaned forward starting intently at his brother. “But whoever he is he knows enough about the
stone to try and sell fakes. And we’re
gonna find out what he knows and how he learned it.” They spent the remainder of the train ride
discussing their plan for this new mission unaware that they were the subject
of unwanted interest.
Roy sighed heavily as
Lieutenant Hawkeye set another stack of papers on his desk to await his
signature. Normally he would use any
distraction to keep from doing the mountains of paperwork that covered his
desk. And some parts of him seemed
hopelessly drawn to thoughts of a certain passionate, young, blond,
alchemist. But his reason told him to
stay focused on the task at hand for once.
Too much indulgence in fantasies about Ed left him in the embarrassing
position of being unable to stand without evidence of his interest making it
known to everyone, and he was disgusted at his lack of control. He wasn’t the teenager in this
situation. Leading him to reason number
two why he didn’t want to think about this particular subject in the office.
Thinking
about his desire for Ed while in the company of his adult subordinates left the
rational part of his mind berating him for even contemplating getting sexually
involved with a subordinate who was so much younger. A certain arrogant streak in him told him
that he could get away with it, and wouldn’t it be that much more exciting to
carry on such an affair right under his superiors noses? It would be exciting and the temptation was
so strong. Roy smirked to himself. Not to mention that Ed wasn’t just any of his
subordinates. He was the Fullmetal Alchemist. Roy
had no question that he would be the dominant one in this situation. He had the experience, the control, and the
advantage. He was the one being…well, courted for lack of a better word, by
Edward. He could certainly name the
terms of his acquiescence. He had to
admit privately part of him loved that advantage.
He
was Ed’s commanding officer, it’s true, but he had rarely been able to truly
command Ed. It stroked his ego more then
a little and in the future possibly more substantial parts of him as well, to
think of commanding Ed so intimately. The
potential for such a gratifying involvement was a heady intoxicant for Roy. Still, he felt a pang of guilt at what that
might also mean for Ed. Submitting and
finding him self so vulnerable might also open Ed emotionally in ways he was
not ready for yet. Ed, in his arrogant
youth, thought it would be so easy not to get emotionally involved. But Roy
wasn’t so sure. Not just about Ed’s
ability to guard his heart but about his ability to guard his own as well.
There
was a very good reason why he carefully kept his distance, never getting to
close to others. Every ounce of sense
that Roy possessed
told him to end this before it began, to let Ed down now rather than taking
such a risk. But Roy’s emotions and his body weren’t
listening. Ed was simply too much to
resist, his passionate, loyal, caring nature, his sharp wit, and his beautiful
body. Roy could see in his minds eye a
vision of Ed, naked and flushed, his long, blond, hair spread wide over Roy’s
pillow, his eyes half-lidded with pleasure…Roy told his overactive libido
firmly to stop. This. Instant.
Focus.
Focus on work. He’d have time to fight
the battle between his conscious, his reason and his libido after work.
“Sir,
is everything alright?” Roy
blinked up in confusion at Hawkeye still standing in front of his desk. Her back was ramrod straight, her shoulders
back, and her jaw looked like it was clenched.
She looked more severe than usual, if that was possible. “You seem distracted by something.”
“Uh,
yes, yes of course it is. I think I’m
getting hungry is all.” Roy tried to smile faintly. “Is it lunch time yet?”
Hawkeye
frowned slightly and looked at her watch.
Her disbelief etched in her stiffening shoulders. “No, sir, not for two more hours.”
Roy knew better then to
suggest an early lunch and went with the safest course of action. “Ah, well I’ll just get back to work
then. Carry on, Lieutenant.” It was always like that since his discussion
with Ed. Ever since Roy
had admitted that he was attracted to him his mind had chased around in circles
trying to decide what he was going to do about it. It distracted him from almost everything
else.
“Yes,
sir,” Hawkeye gave him a quizzical look and turned away as if returning to her
desk in the outer office. She paused at
the door and without turning to look back she said, “Sir, there’s a call for
you from Lieutenant Colonel Hughes. He
says it’s important.”
“Thank
you, Lieutenant.” Roy eyed the phone warily as he contemplated
answering. With Hughes it could be
anything, new “adventures in daddying”, or trying to pry the truth out of him
about why he needed a clean room to talk to Ed, or information totally
unrelated. It was the later that pushed
him. If Hughes did have something
important tell him and he didn’t answer he would regret it.
Roy jerked the handset off
the receiver and put the phone to his ear, “Mustang.”
“Now
Roy, is that
anyway to greet a friend?” Hughes tone
dripped with triumph. “Don’t you want to
know what is happening with your protégé?”
Every
muscle in Roy’s
body tensed but no other physical reaction betrayed his response to the supposedly innocent sounding question. “Certainly,” Roy’s tone was completely level but even he
could hear that it had become hard.
“Good,”
Maes smug tone grated on Roy’s
nerves. “Meet me for lunch at The Fish
Club. Say 12 o’clock. You’re treating.” Then the line clicked dead.
Roy slammed the phone down
and growled low in his throat. The Fish
Club was one of the most expensive restaurants in East City. Hughes
either had something really important to tell him, or he had something to
blackmail Roy with, and he was assured that Roy would pay. Hughes couldn’t know what had happened with
Ed, did he? Well at least if he did Roy
could still claim to be innocent…well maybe innocent wasn’t the right word more
like not guilty of sleeping with Ed….yet.
He
had the faint hope that by the time Ed returned he would see the young man and
realize his mistake. Then he could let
Ed down easy and go on with his life, but somehow he feared that he had already
lost the battle in this. Roy feared that he was
already involved too much.
A/N: My deep and humble apologies for the very
long delay in posting this chapter. I
shall endeavor to be more diligent with future postings. Real Life in addition to a self-insert fic
(which I won’t bore you with here) and an original fic have been dividing my
attention terribly. But with Sakuracon
coming up and my new interest in the unplanned plot I’ve added in, which I hope
you enjoy as well, I am once again motivated to work harder on completing this fic. Dear readers your patience is greatly
appreciated.

Al are going to for the “mission” I stumbled upon this little gem. I find it quite fitting I hope you do too.
