Part 4
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the Gundam boys, I just like to imagine them in my own little world (which is totally of my making). No profits are made from this story, just gratuitous pleasure.

Feedback is appreciated. I enjoy hearing from all of my readers. You are what makes writing worth while. I hope that you enjoy reading it.
My sincere thanks to the following:
Dragon: I hope that I can live up to the promise. I will certainly try not to disappoint.
Diane Rainwater: It makes me happy that you see Duo that way, too, because he’s going to need a lot of love and caring for before the end. It’s not always easy to be a ‘wife’ to Heero Yuy.
Chibi_Dilandau: They have a lot of work to do. It’s a difficult relationship, at best, and Duo needs time and space. And understanding. And Heero needs patience. Lots and lots of patience.

Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…
“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”
Part 4.
“Winner Enterprises, Simon,” came the voice on the phone.
“Simon, Heero Yuy here,” Heero replied.
“Heero, I’ve been expecting your call.”
“Ah, yes, Simon. The mission is complete, no problems. I’ll have the report to you tomorrow. I’ve, ah, got a favor to ask. I need some time off. I’ve had an unexpected development…” Heero's voice trailed off.
“Really? May I inquire as to the nature of the development?” asked Simon, a hint of amusement in his voice.
“I’m sure you already know by now. My ‘wife’ showed up,” Heero replied.
“Ah, your pardon, Heero. Yes, Master Quatre called about an hour ago. He was quite concerned. He cares a lot about you, Heero. What can I do to help?” asked Simon.
“I should have know Quatre couldn’t keep his nose out of it,” Heero laughed.
“Yes,” Simon agreed. “He does have a way of wanting to help out his friends.”
“I need some time off to find an apartment. I’d like to live alone with Duo for awhile, let him get used to me again before the vultures have a go at him. I think these past three years have been really hard on him and he’s about ready to self destruct. I don’t want him to take anyone else with him if he does. I’d like to try to defuse him before he goes off,” Heero explained.
“I completely understand,” Simon told him. “Well, we happen to have a nice little place that just came vacant. Let me give you the address. Just tell the day manager that you’re there to look at the apartment. I’ll give them your name. There should be no problem. If you like it, stay for as long as you like, consider it one of your perks. And take as long as you need to get things sorted out. You’ve put in some long, hard hours over the last year without much of a break. I’d say that you deserve a vacation. And Heero?”
“Yes, Simon?”
“When you feel that he’s stabilized a little, I’d like you to bring him in. Mr. Winner and I would both like to meet the infamous Mrs. Heero Yuy,” said Simon, a smile evident in his voice.
“You got it. Thanks, Simon,” said Heero gratefully.
“No problem, Heero. W.E.I. takes care of it’s employees. Especially those that are near and dear to Master Quatre’s heart,” said Simon, and Heero could almost imaging the smile on his face as he said that. “Oh, and no hurry on that report. The end of the week is fine.”
They hung up and Heero turned to find Quatre peeking out at him from around the corner.
He laughed and shook his head, and the bubbly little blonde bounced into his arms.
“I just wanted to make sure you were going to be alright,” Quatre explained, snuggling close to Heero. “I don’t want you to go, but if you have to, I wanted to make sure it was easy for you. I feel that your life is going to be complicated enough without any extra worries thrown in. I hope you don’t mind.”
“No, not at all. Thanks, Quatre,” said Heero, kissing him on the top of his head and holding on to him tightly. “You’re the best.”
After another squeeze, Heero went back to his room to check on his sleeping beauty, and found Duo awake and drying his hair the rest of the way.
“Hey, babe,” he said. “Feeling better?”
“Ummm. Except my hair’s a mess,” replied Duo ruefully. “It’s going to take forever to get the tangles out. That’s what I get for going to sleep in the tub. Thanks for getting me out before I drown.”
“No problem, babe. Want some help with your hair? Oh, and I have the address of an apartment for us to look at this morning, if you’d like,” said Heero, coming around to sit behind Duo on the bed.
Duo handed him the comb and relaxed while Heero worked on the tangles. It felt nice, having someone fuss over him once more.
“Can we eat first?” asked Duo, his stomach growling at him.
“Sure. Any place special you want to go?” Heero asked.
“No, where ever you say has good breakfast. And lots of coffee. Good coffee,” replied Duo.
Heero finished up on the hair and plaited it deftly, tying it off with a red ribbon that had been laying on his desk for some time. Then he got out some clothes that looked like they would fit Duo fairly well.
“What say I take you shopping for some new clothes after we look at this apartment?” he asked Duo.
“That would be great. I don’t have a whole lot that’s in very good shape,” Duo answered, his face lighting up at the prospect.
“We’ll get you a whole new wardrobe, then,” said Heero, smiling at his lover fondly. He had spent very little of the money that he’d made over the past year and W.E.I. paid him very well. This house that he currently lived in was paid for, and so he only contributed to the upkeep, utilities and food. He was glad to be able to spend some his savings on his beloved Duo.
Heero took his hand and they headed off to face the morning together. Duo felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders and Heero looked as if he’d been given a reprieve from death. The miracle of their love would start to heal the many wounds that had been lying open for the last three years, if only they could let it. There in would lie the true miracle.

After a nice breakfast and several cups of excellent coffee, Heero and Duo walked into the lobby of the apartment complex for which Simon had given him the address. It was well appointed and looked to be a very nice place. Heero stepped up to the counter where a lone man was in attendance.
“My name is Heero Yuy. I’m here with my wife to look at the apartment,” Heero told the attendant on duty. Jefferies, Day Manager, his tag read.
“Right. It’s on the first floor, down that hall. I’ll need a deposit for the key,” he said in a bored voice.
“Excuse me?” asked Heero, in a cold voice.
“You heard me,” said Jefferies.
“I heard you, but I don’t think you heard me,” replied Heero, clearly and loudly.
“Are you trying to cause trouble, young man?” asked Jefferies, coldly.
Duo snickered. No one could out class Heero when it came to cold, ruthless arrogance. He had a killers eye, and when he turned those frosty deep blue eyes on you, it was often said you could see your own funeral reflected in them. Duo was sure that Jefferies was seeing daisies right about now.
Just then another man stepped out of the office behind the counter.
“May I be of some assistance?” he asked. Rawlings, General Manager, his tag read.
“I’m Heero Yuy, from Winner Enterprises. Simon Bloom told me you had an apartment for my wife and I to inspect. And I’m fairly certain it’s not on the first floor and I know for a fact that I’m not required to leave any kind of a deposit for a key,” Heero stated coldly.
“Of course not, Mr Yuy. I’ve been expecting you. If you and Mrs Yuy would be so kind as to follow me? There is a private lift to the penthouse,” said Rawlings, gesturing them to accompany him. He shot a death glare at the gaping Jefferies.
Having gotten the couple on the lift, Rawlings made his livid way back to desk.
“I cannot believe that you just insulted a top executive of W.E.I. like that. Do you know who owns this complex? Who gives you a job, pays your salary? W.E.I.,” Rawlings blasted at the day manager.
“But, but, he never said he was with W.E.I.,” the man whined.
“He didn’t tell you his name?” Rawlings asked incredulously.
“He said he was Hero You, or something absurd like that, and wanted to look at an apartment,” Jefferies sniveled.
“Heero Yuy,” enunciated Rawlings, and pointed to the large note pinned to the desk. “It’s right here, in black and white, that he would be coming by with his wife to inspect the penthouse. And you insulted him.
“Well, it’s not worth my job to have an incompetent such as yourself on duty at this complex. You’re fired. Get out immediately.”
“Well, what was I suppose to think? He comes strutting in here like he owned the place with some pretty boy following him, calling him his wife, for god’s sake. I didn’t think he’d be a corporate executive,” Jefferies tried to defend himself, and not doing a very good job of it.
“His sexual preference, or choice of a partner are none of our concern and are not to be judged by us. He is a top executive of W.E.I., and is there because obviously he deserves it. We are here to take care of his housing needs. That is all. And you have failed to understand that.” Rawlings turned his back on the man, indicating that the conversation was over.
“Oh, and by the way, Jefferies,” he added “if for some twisted reason you should think to take your frustrations out on Mr or Mrs Yuy, think again. W.E.I. is large and it’s top executives are highly valued, if you know what I mean. Any attempt at harm to either of them would lead to quick and brutal retaliation. You have been warned.”
Jefferies slinked out of the complex, wondering how he was going to explain the loss of yet another job to his wife. Whiskey sounded good right about now, and maybe later, a long drive.

The apartment was gorgeous, fully furnished and ready to move in to. Heero followed Duo around as Duo looked into every cabinet and cupboard, every nook and corner. The master bedroom and bathroom was huge, Duo thought someone could live comfortably in just those two rooms alone (ordering takeout). The second bedroom was comfortable, the living room had a magnificent entertainment center, well stocked with movies and music, and the most comfortable overstuffed furniture available. The outside balcony had a spiral staircase that led to a well tended roof top garden. All in all, it was a dream home.
“Heero,” said Duo, “can we really afford to live in a place like this? It must cost a bunch. I’d probably have to get a job to help pay the rent.”
“Don’t worry, babe,” replied Heero. “It’s part of my company perks. I am a top executive at W.E.I.. This is one of their executive properties. It’s ours, if you want it, for as long as you’d like to stay here. If you don’t like it, we can look else where. Whatever makes you happy.”
“I’d really like to stay here, at least for a little while, if you don’t mind,” said Duo with a wistful look in his eyes. “I’ve never lived anywhere really nice before.”
“Then it’s all yours, babe,” Heero told him. “Let’s go do the papers and you can sleep here tonight.”
“Are… aren’t you going to sleep here, too?” asked Duo, concerned. “You’re not going to leave me here alone, are you?”
“Of course not, Duo,” Heero said, smiling. “I’ll be here, too. Didn’t I say I wasn’t ever going to leave you again? I’ll be in that room, right over there.” He pointed to the second bedroom.
Duo looked at the floor, a troubled look on his face, but he said nothing. After all, that was the reason for the two bedroom apartment, so that he could have his own room, his privacy. Heero said he wouldn’t force himself on him and Duo trusted him implicitly, but he felt it wasn’t right. That Heero was forcing himself to hold back and that was almost as bad. Duo sighed sadly and a shadow fell between the two as Duo followed Heero out of their new home.
They took the lift down silently, Heero holding Duo's hand, lightly rubbing his thumb across the back of it. The contact seemed to make Heero happy, and so Duo refrained from telling him that it made him uncomfortable. It was one of the compromises he was going to have to make in this new life they were starting on together, Duo realized. Heero might agree to sleep apart from him, but he still seemed to need some kind of physical reassurance that Duo was here with him again, and if the touch of his hand would give Heero the comfort that he needed, then Duo would try to provide it for him.
Before he had just followed blindly, doing as he was told. Now, Heero was telling him he was the one in control, but Heero was really still controlling everything, wasn’t he? Well, Duo would take what he could. At least he knew Heero and knew that Heero would treat him good, that he would try and keep his word to Duo, and that was probably all Duo could ask for, at least for now. Heero was willing to try to give Duo the freedom and the chance to make choices. So, he let Heero hold his hand and he smiled at his happy lover.
“Mr Rawlings,” said Heero, “Duo loves it. What papers do I need to fill out and where do I sign?”
“It’s all been taken care of, Mr Yuy,” said a smiling Mr Rawlings. “Simon said he was sure it would be acceptable, and so took the liberty to have the paperwork done in advance. Here are your keys, the lift passes, and Mrs Yuy, for you Simon sent a special gift to bid you welcome. In the carpark, you will find a brand new GTO, candy apple red, just for you. Here are your keys.”
“For me? A gift for me?” Duo stood mouth agape. “I never got a gift like this before.”
His bottom lip began to quiver and tears spilled from his indigo eyes. It was all so overwhelming. He had suddenly gone from being a penniless street rat, a veritable beggar, a gun for hire, to being the wife of a very rich, very well placed and obviously very well respected man, living in a penthouse with a brand new car. In less that a day. It was almost more then his poor brain could process. His knees went weak and he started to collapse, only to be caught up in the strong arms of the man who loved him more then anyone else in the world.
“Take it easy, babe. Need to sit for a minute?” Heero asked.
Duo could only nod. Rawlings hurried away to return a few moments later with a bottle of ice cold water, which Duo accepted gratefully.
“I think that today’s excitement has been a bit much for Mrs Yuy,” commented Rawlings.
“Oh, it’s been wonderful, sir. The apartment is beautiful, you’ve been gracious and the gift from someone I don’t even know…” said Duo, shaking his head in wonder.
“W.E.I. takes good care of it’s employees, Mrs Yuy. This is how they inspire loyalty. They treat us well and we work hard for them,” replied Rawlings, modestly.
“You’re right, Mr Rawlings and you have done an outstanding job. It won’t go unnoticed,” said Heero.
“Sir, I don’t do it for recognition. I do it because it’s my job, and I love my job,” said the man. “Now, if you will excuse me, I have your paperwork to take care of. I believe you have everything you need, but if there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know.” And the man departed with dignity.
“That’s a nice man, Heero,” said Duo simply, watching him leave.
“He is a good man,” agreed Heero. “Now, Mrs Yuy, how a ride in your new car?”
“But Heero, I can’t drive,” said Duo, his lip quivering again.
“Hey, no problem, I’ll teach you,” said Heero. “Let’s go.”
“Heero?” asked Duo.
“What, babe?” he answered.
“Shopping and lunch first?” he asked hopefully.
“Your wish is my command, princess,” Heero laughed. “Come, your chariot awaits.”
And they left to make a whirlwind round of the best stores in the shopping malls, Duo shopping until he was ready to drop. When he was absolutely sure he couldn’t face another store, Heero took him out to a nice dinner, then they went home to enjoy their first night in their new home.
