I also do not own the song or lyrics One Night in Bangkok by Murry Head.
I had no idea that the song was actually part of a larger stage show named ‘Chess’ written by Benny Andersson, Bjor Ulvaeus and Tim Rice. Which I own no rights to either.
I am not making any money from this work of fanfiction.
A/N- This is actually a G/V get together fic. However, some of the other pairings may surprise you. :) I think there’s only one cannon couple in here. Obviously VERY A/U.
I hope this is a fun read for anyone who may be interested in such a combination.
Beta’d by Hoshi. Thank you Hoshi! (And thanks to rdk for catching a few others).
(DBZ/chess (the game, not the play.))
Rating – PG13 – or at least that’s what I was hoping for.
Warnings – OOC, A/U, mentions and kisses of M/M, mentions and kisses of M/F, chess, foul language, some minor roles of OC’s.
Round 3
Taul smiled as the couple from earlier came back. “I am glad you could make it on such short notice your Highnesses. The tournament needs 16 players in order to begin. Mr. Shore is very grateful.”
Chichi nodded her understanding as she pulled out her credit card.
Vegeta grunted and turned his attention away from the transaction. His eyes scanned the room, but he didn’t realize he was looking for one face in the crowd. It was not too difficult to tell one person from another. These humans had more coloration and shape than he had seen on any planet before. Some were blond, some were brunet. Some were short, some were tall.
Some black haired, black eyed, and… oh…him. His blue haired companion and he were laughing at something another guest had said to them.
He grabbed Chichi’s hand and asked her. “Who are they?”
Chichi was about to tell him she didn’t know when Taul politely interrupted. “They are Bulma and Goku Briefs. They are affiliated with Capsule Corporation and they are also the main reason a spot opened up for you,” he commented, trying to be helpful.
“Oh,” Vegeta said with a small frown on his face. Capsule technology was one of the biggest reasons he was still on this planet. But if the pair were mated… er – married – he would have to find some sort of bargaining chip other than being Vegeta-sei’s co-heir.
Chichi recognized the faint sound of disappointment in Vegeta’s voice, but was uncertain what it was all about. She would have to figure it out later. “Taul? Where will we be starting?”
Taul turned and waved one of the waiting staff over. “Will you please seat Princess Chichi and Prince Vegeta at table eight?”
The young woman nodded and led the direction to table eight. “Is there anything I can get for you?” she asked, once Vegeta was seated. Chichi chose to stand at his side as she sized up the couple they were seated across from.
“Water?” Vegeta asked. There was a small snicker from the other side of the table. Vegeta raised an eyebrow at his competitor’s companion. “Something funny?”
“You’re new here,” she started to say.
“Samantha, that’s not very nice,” the other player said.
“What? Jonathan, I was just going to inform him about some of the ropes,” Samantha reasoned.
Jonathan shrugged in apology, and Samantha continued. “Most of us are here to mingle, talk some business, play a game. Ordering water indicates you are taking the camaraderie out of the atmosphere. Relax, enjoy yourself. Have a drink. You probably won’t last two games against my fiancé anyway.”
Chichi bristled and was about to give the twit a piece of her mind before she was interrupted by Mr. Shore speaking over a sound system. “Okay folks, it’s midnight. We have some new guests here so I do have to explain the rules.” There were some groans from some of the more experienced players, but he ignored them. “Each night will only constitute one round. If you loose your games, you are welcome to come back and watch the other players the remaining nights, but you will only be guests then, not competitors. I’ll remind you folks to talk business between the games, not during the games. There’s a considerable amount of money to be had and we don’t want anyone to accuse someone else of distraction.”
There were a lot of laughs generated from that comment. Vegeta wasn’t certain what why though. “Each game will be given 60 minutes up to the first 40 moves. After that, there will be one minute for each additional move. If both players are tied at the end of the first two games, there will be a tiebreak game. Winners and losers of the other matches are welcome to stay and watch the tie break rounds if they want to.”
“Most of all have fun!”
There was clapping in response to his last statement and then one of the wait staff stepped up to the table. “Are you ready for the clock to begin?” he asked Vegeta and Jonathan.
Vegeta noticed the other tables had the same thing going on. He nodded and the waiter pressed the timer’s button.
Jonathan had the white pieces and started out with the practical move of moving the king’s pawn up two spaces.
Vegeta’s black eyes glittered as he settled his focus on the board.
Samantha frowned when he didn’t even look up at her when she was supposedly touching up her lipstick.
Chichi caught her eye and smiled wickedly. If Samantha had thought it was going to be that easy to distract Vegeta during the game then the gal had another thing coming.
Samantha pouted at the Chichi. She wanted to stick her tongue out at the princess, but even she realized how immature that would be.
Chichi motioned to one of the waiters and he brought a chair over for her to sit down. Things were about to get tense if tedious. She wanted to watch in comfort.

“Stalemate,” Jonathan said, relief evident in his voice, sitting back in his chair. The last few minutes of this game had been intense. He was not certain he was going to pull it off.
Vegeta leaned over the board looking at the three playing pieces left. He growled quietly at himself when he realized that Jonathan was correct.
Chichi stood out of her chair to get a better look at the board. Vegeta had been so close, but in the end had moved too fast. He had managed to back Jonathan’s king into a corner, but gave him no alternative free spaces where he would not put his king into mate. And without those free spaces and not having been put into definite checkmate, the game became tied; regardless that Vegeta still had his queen and king left.
Jonathan stood and reached his hand over the table in a good-natured move. Vegeta shook it while still sitting in his chair.
“Well, Samantha and I are going to go mingle with the rest of the group that has already finished their first games,” he told his competitor, “I’ll see you in about an hour.”
Vegeta stood as Jonathan and Samantha left the table, thinking a bit of hobnobbing might be a good idea. He heard a ruckus at the table farthest from them and then he heard good-natured laughter. “Come on,” he told Chichi, grabbing her hand.
Chichi was happy to comply. She had almost feared Vegeta would wish to sit and wait in his chair until the start of the next game. She desperately wanted to mingle.
They found the source of the continuing laughter a moment later. Two couples, one they had passed in the hall earlier and another were all quieting down slowly. Nothing looked odd about the game they were playing, so it must have been something else that had set them off.
Vegeta could see the game had the potential of taking a while to finish, so he hung back a bit, trying to discern more about the people he was observing.
The man with the shoulder length black hair and ice blue eyes moved his bishop. “Mate,” he said and punched the clock.
The man Vegeta had learned was named Goku bent over the table and countered by blocking with his rook. The decision to make the move was fast, all of three seconds. He reached to tap the clock.
The other shook his head, looking at the board as the clock counted down. He finally pulled his bishop back and tapped the timer again.
Goku moved his queen in a seeming random place before tapping the timer.
The blonde behind Goku’s competitor hissed, but didn’t say anything. The man scrutinized the game closer before a defeated look came over his face and he shook his head. He took a pawn with his favored bishop before tapping the clock.
Goku moved his rook over a couple of spaces. “Check Mate, Eddie,” he said good-naturedly.
Eddie shook Goku’s hand. “Nicely done, as usual. I still wish I hadn’t drawn you for a competitor for the first round,” he commented.
Goku smiled at the man named Eddie, “Well, I hope even if I do win, you and your sister will stick around. My sister has been dieing to talk to you about the latest development at Capsule Corporation.”
The blue haired woman with Goku smiled and a faint blush tinged her cheeks. “Of course, after this round. You both have too much to concentrate on while playing,” Bulma said.
Vegeta didn’t know how to react to learning the pair was not married. At first he felt relief, but when she had blushed at barely talking to Eddie he knew the woman had more than just business in mind when it came to dealings with the other man. She would not be easily persuaded into a marriage for commerce.
Still, he needed to break the ice some how, so he could at least talk business deals. He stepped forward with Chichi a pace or two behind him.
Goku chose that moment to stand before saying. “I’ve got to heed the call of nature. I’ll be back in a moment.” He turned quickly and before he had a chance to actually look where he was going ran straight into Vegeta.
“Your Highness, I am very sorry,” Goku said, bringing his hands up to catch the fellow before he realized he hadn’t actually knocked him off balance. Which he found a bit strange; most people would have been on the floor gasping for air if he had ran into them with that much unintentional force.
Vegeta backed away slightly before Goku’s hands could actually take a hold of his arms. “Vegeta,” he said, slightly embarrassed as he realized so many people were looking.
“Huh?” Goku asked, bringing his hand to the back of his head in a gesture of confusion and embarrassment.
“I don’t know how you knew I was a prince, but you may call me Vegeta,” Vegeta explained to the other.
Goku beamed his famous smile at the other man and brought his hand down and held it out. “Good to meet you Vegeta,” he said.
Vegeta looked at the offered hand before reaching his out to have it pumped vigorously. The prince couldn’t tell if it were only his imagination, but when their hands met there was a tingle that shot up his arm.
“Goku,” Bulma called out, “Are you going to introduce the rest of us?” she asked.
Goku turned back to his sister, belatedly realizing he should let go of the prince’s hand. “Vegeta, I would like you to meet my sister, Bulma Briefs. The others are Eddie Laurel,” the black haired man smiled, “And Jane Laurel,” the blonde behind him nodded her head.
“Vegeta,” Vegeta introduced himself again simply. He reached back for Chichi’s hand and pulled her gently forward. “And Princess Chichi.”
“Hello, your Highness,” Bulma said warmly, willing to gage the other by her reaction.
Chichi took her cue from Vegeta. “Just Chichi is fine,” she said nodding her head.
Bulma immediately warmed to the woman. “So, Chichi, what brings you here tonight?” Bulma asked, trying to break the ice.
Before Chichi could answer, Goku interrupted. “Well, I will be back shortly,” he stated, heading off in a rush.
Bulma watched with growing interest as Vegeta’s gaze followed her brother.
“Chess.” Chichi answered Bulma’s earlier question, bringing Bulma’s attention back to the present.
“And business,” Vegeta interjected.
Chichi gave him a knowing smile. “Yes, and business.”
All three still standing around the table ears perked at this news. “Exactly what kind of business?” Eddie asked.
Vegeta could almost feel the temperature change. The group had gone from ‘friendly’ competitive to their real game faces in a matter of moments. Vegeta looked at Bulma. “Capsule technology,” he said.
Bulma’s eyes gleamed. This man was going to be around for a while and if that look he had been following her brother with meant anything then he had more than just a passing interest in her families’ business. Oh, Goku was going to be in for a real surprise. “Well, how about if we wait until after the second games have been finished?” she asked Vegeta.
Vegeta thought about it for a moment and then nodded. There wasn’t much point in discussing anything in detail if they were just going to be interrupted in 50 minutes. “Sounds good,” he agreed.
“So, Vegeta,” Jane spoke up, “Exactly where are you the prince of?”
Chichi smiled, but let Vegeta answer. “Vegeta-sie.”
Eddie scratched at his ear, “I haven’t heard of your country, I am sorry.”
Vegeta smiled. “I expect that you wouldn’t have,” he answered vaguely before a waiter came up to the five of them.
“Would any one care to order a drink?” he asked.
