Scene four
She slowly breathed in the wretching vinegar-like stench that was beginning to permeate from her dripping wet body. She had been standing there for a while now, and the air that circulates into the medical room from the steriliser-infused conditioner is starting to cool down her skin temperature at an unwelcoming rate. Her tail twitched uncomfortably, as the fine fur started to stand up from the root, trying to trap in as much needed heat as possible.
She snatched the nearest towel she could find and roughly dried herself like a race against the steepingly cold temperature, the towel did not help much, it was made of coarse, linen-like material that wasn't made to absorb moisture but rather for the purpose of wiping off excess liquid. Goosebumps appeared all over and she sneezed a few times. Quickly turning around, she grabbed the armouries that were laid out for her, and after getting dressed, she did not pause to look at herself in the reflecting tank surface before pressing the exit button on the door.
"Enneyac."
Gasp.
"Oh, .... doc, what is it?"
"Surely you can't leave without this?"
Dr. Nibyll produced a scouter affixed with a raspberry pink lense.
"It's the latest model, I'm sure it's a must have for you?"
"..... Yes, that is true."
"I'm surprised you came back here without one, what happened?"
"It broke during one of our missions, it was an outdated model anyway, it couldn't even pintpoint the location accurately anymore, I was better off sticking with my teammates."
"Speaking of teammates, how has the mission been going? According to your stats, you and your team still had another planet to conquer before you officially return, but it appears that you have been making round trips in between the missions, and if I remember correctly, this was the fourth one, you don't think you're messing up the schedules too much?"
"No, Bardock's a good captain so we agreed that I could make these trips."
"So you're with his team."
"..."
"You know, you have gotten a lot quieter since you joined them, do tell me that nothing's wrong?"
"... Doc."
"Yes?"
En walked up to Dr. Nibyll and gingerly picked up the scouter with her right hand then with both hands, she carefully mounted it on her left ear. It felt weird to have something attached to a part of your face again, but the new model is very light, it would not be long before it feel normal. She carefully pressed the big button on the side and the scouter immediately registered, displaying the data from the screen, even giving out details such as temperature, humidity, oxygen level and the Galactical Positioning System, the biggest surprise however was that it was silent throughout the registration. Normally under the reign of Frieza, all scouters are required to have a minimal amount of audible sound to prevent spies amongst the people under his ruling.
After realising this, En cocked an eyebrow at Dr. Nibyll, he just smiled.
"You know Enneyac, I'm waiting for your reply."
It was hard to tell the intention in his voice.
"I believe that it's better for you to stick to your profession, and nothing more."
His expression was unchanged, before cracking a half-hearted smile and spoke.
"You're right, it is none of my business, and medical is what I thrive in. After all, what do I know about the warrior way? I'm just a practisioner, it is my duty after all to make sure you're all fighting fit for the next mission." He said it with a faint self-depreciating tone, En could not help but scrutinise him more.
"Thanks for the scouter."
She turned on her heel and began to walk away.
"Don't you want to know about your team's next mission?"
She paused almost too immediately, even the bang on her forehead shook back and forth.
"You know doc, is it possible if I work solo from now on?"
"Huh?"
"I've gotten bored of working in a team, as a team even. Bardock's a good captain but it's just not my style, I'd much prefer to do things my own way."
"Hmm hmmm hmm." Dr. Nibyll stifled a mirthless chuckle.
En did not react.
"Is my healing power so successful that you really think that you can take on planets on your own?"
"You'll be surprised at what I can do. The bottom line is, I'm bored, and if it doesn't change then I'll just end up dragging my team down."
"You're right, alas, what is a Sayain to do except fighting?"
She remained unchanged as a statue.
"Come into the assignment room, let's see what we can find there."
En followed slowly, leaving a safe distance behind. To her it was not a respect for the superiors, but for a standard practice of maintaining a safe range of possible attacks that could come from anywhere.
The hallway was dimly lit, there were white safety lights dotted along both sides of the hallway for emergency exits but that was it.
Dr. Nibyll stopped at a door closely safeguarded by two troopers, Apule and Cui.
"Good evening Doctor." They both answered.
"Good evening gentleman, huuhuuhuu~."
They both were confused, the doctor was usually grumpy to be around with, and of all this, why was there a lowly Sayain trooper closely behind him? What struck them as even more curious was that he seemed to be at ease with her.
The door opened, the well lit room stung En's eyes for a brief moment, her sensitive Sayain sight found it hard to adjust to the sudden change of brightness that her iris narrowed slightly, trying her best not to grimace.
"Hm? Who's there?" Gruffed Dr. Nibyll, he was not expecting one of his favourite rooms to be used without prior permission from himself. When En finally adjusted to her surroundings, she looked towards the direction that Dr. Nibyll was being displeased about.
Someone was seated at the only darkly lit part of the room, in a big, cushy armchair, facing away from them, with the huge desk, piled with paperwork and built in equipments. En felt the hackle slowly rising up as she gradually lowered her central gravity, ready to pounce at the unnanounced intruder.
"As your superior, it's only natural that I pay a visit to see how you've been performing, Dr. Nibyll." The source of the voice spoke, the armchair slowly swivelled to face the duo.
"Lord Zarbon!" Dr. Nybill quickly gestured a bow, En remained in her position still.
"Forgive me my Lord, I know we talked about reviewing the stats sometimes but I wasn't expecting you to drop by so soon! Enneyac what are you doing in that fighting stance, pay your respect to Lord Zarbon, he's my supervisor and naturally your superior too." Spluttered Dr. Nibyll, his voice losing his usual calmness.
"Please, Dr. Nibyll, it is you who is at fault for failing to educate your troopers of how they stand with the rest of us to begin with, don't try and pin the blame on the ignorant." The string of sentences flowed effortlessly from Zarbon's lips, calm and collected, but En winced at the last word.
"Ahaha, I do ask for your forgiveness once again, this trooper here has recently returned from battle and is freshly out of the rejuvenation tank, so please don't mind the smell of chemicals."
"Uh, I was about to say how you managed to bring such putrid stench with you, for a moment I lost faith with the standard of hygiene around here, you do realise how my reputation can affect your wellbeing?"
"If it was not for you my Lord I will not be working here in this room, and I could not be more grateful."
En was beginning to feel irritated with the seemingly never ending rally between the two; to witness the ridiculous power play, not to mention being the target of the insult, was starting to awaken an instinctual rage. She could not believe that, this doctor here, who as long as she had known to be assigned to be her healer, who she have had to maintain a code of conduct and respect that neither side intruded, was now bowing his head and smiling so clownishly towards this tall man it almost resembled a sad grimace. What enraged her even more however, was the fact that she dared not to look into this stranger's eyes, even as she slowly regained her normal standing composure.
"Doc." She spoke, not letting Zarbon cut in another word. Her voice was deep and controlled.
Dr. Nibyll whipped his head around, wanting to mouth to her wordlessly that this was not a good time to cut in, but she could not care less. She just wanted to be out of here.
"When is my next assignment?" She spoke and folded her arms.
Dr. Nibyll again wanted to hint for her to back down or leave the room even, but before he was able to successfully convey the message across, Zarbon spoke.
"Do stop boring us doctor and just get on with it, I should be heading back to Lord Frieza with my report of how you've been running this part of the station." He got up briskly, his purple cape flowing behind him from the sudden movement.
"Yes Lord Zarbon, and please, do give Lord Frieza my highest regards." Dr. Nibyll grimaced one more time.
Zarbon leisurely walked towards the door, waited for it to open, then exited.
"Doc."
"Huhwhaa?"
"The assignment?"
"Oh yes, let's have a look shall we? Dr. Nibyll briskly walked towards the huge monitor and began keying in his password, within seconds a huge screen flashed brightly lit colours before displaying a huge database table of planetary statistics. He seemed relieved to have something to occupy his mind from his rapid tapping of keyboards.
Trying not to let him read her emotions, En stared as blankly as she could at the screen, while suppressing what could have been a huge sigh of relief, unaware that he was observing her from the reflection of the side of the monitor.
End Scene Four
Hey guys, thanks for those who have been reading and commenting (shout out to my homies at DA), I know this didn't seem to be a huge jump in progress, but you will see, every chapter is crucial to the build up, and if you're wondering if En's gonna see Bardock and his team again, I assure you she will.
Stay tuned!
