Duo nearly jumped from the table when his phone rang and Quatre laughed. “You’re like a high school kid.”
“Shut up!” He answered a tad breathlessly when he saw Trowa’s name on the ID. “Hey.”
“Hey. I didn’t wake you up did I?”
Duo leaned his hip to the counter. “No, just finishing up breakfast. Is everything okay with Heero and Zechs?”
“It will be, but they need some help so I’m not going to be available at night on the weekends for a couple of weeks.”
Duo frowned slightly. He knew he should try to be understanding, but he really wanted to spend time with the other man. “I see.”
“But I’m free all day until about eight, today and tomorrow. Think you’d like to get together around noon?”
Duo grinned. “Yeah, that sounds great. Want me to pick you up or meet somewhere?”
“You can come pick me up if you want. Quatre should have my address.”
“All right, I’ll see you at noon, then.”
“Okay.” There was a moment of slightly awkward silence. “I’m really sorry about running out like that last night.”
“Don’t be, man. I totally understand. See you in a bit.”
“See you.”
Duo hung up and punched the air. “Yes!”
Quatre laughed softly. “I take it you are meeting him today?”
He sat back at the table, unable to stop the grin on his face. “Yep. He said he’s gotta help Heero and Zechs for the next couple of weeks at night, but that he’s available during the day so we’re gonna meet up around noon.”
Wufei sedately sipped his coffee as he watched the braided man. “You’re falling awfully fast, aren’t you?”
Duo shrugged. “Not really. It’s just exciting meeting someone new, you know? Especially when it’s someone who’s on the same page as you are.”
“How do you mean?” Quatre asked.
“He’s not looking to rush anything, but he is looking for a serious relationship.” He cupped his hands behind his neck and stared at the ceiling as he played over the previous night’s conversation through his mind. “There’s something kind of vulnerable about him, that’s what Heero said when he gave me the ‘don’t hurt my friend’ speech. I only saw it for a moment last night, and it damn near broke my heart.”
“Vulnerable, how?” Wufei asked.
He lifted a shoulder as he looked to his friend. “He lost his entire family in an accident when he was young. All he’s had for a long time has been Heero and Zechs.”
“Sounds like you two may have more in common than I thought,” Quatre said softly. “Did you tell him about your past?”
Duo shook his head. “We didn’t get that far.”
“So what’s the plan for today?”
He shrugged. “I’ll pick him up and we’ll go from there.”
-----Trowa glanced to the clock as he pulled his jeans up. He’d been worried that running out of the restaurant the night before would have sent the wrong message to Duo, but he’d sounded far from upset when they’d talked on the phone.A knock came to the door and he grabbed a shirt as he made his way to the living room. It was only 11:30 so he figured it was probably Heero coming to make sure he was okay after last night. It wouldn’t be the first time. He froze when he came face to face with wide blue-violet eyes that slid quickly down his body, landing at his left side. Full lips dropped open momentarily before his eyes snapped back up to Trowa’s.
“You’re early.” He cursed the slight breathless quality to his voice.
Duo scratched the tip of his nose, eyes once again moving to Trowa’s hip. “Sorry, the traffic wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”
Trowa nodded slowly before allowing the braided man in and shutting the door. Duo watched as the lines of the tattoo disappeared beneath the jeans and then another line appeared just above the back. It wasn’t nearly enough to be able to figure out what it was.
“So, is there any chance I’ll get to see what’s hidden by those jeans?”
“What?”
“The tattoo.”
Trowa spun quickly, pressing his back to the door. He studied the braided man for any hint of disgust, but all he saw was fascination. “You don’t think it’s… trashy?”
Duo snorted a laugh. “If I did then I probably wouldn’t have three tattoos myself.” He looked down to the tip of the tattoo just above Trowa’s hip and reached his fingers out to trace the lines showing above the low riding jeans. “What is it?”
Trowa sucked in a breath at the gentle touch. “It’s a reminder.”
Duo lifted an eyebrow, rubbing his thumbs in a circle over the tender skin just inside Trowa’s hipbone. “That’s rather vague.”
He wet his lips as Duo moved until there were only inches between them and he pressed his back to the door. “A reminder that sometimes life sucks more than anything, but that there are also good times that are worth going through all the shit for.”
“Damn, Tro, that’s poetic.”
Emerald eyes slid closed as lips pressed softly to his. After nearly a year of no intimacy the soft touch was more than enough to send heat hurdling through him. He pulled the braided man flush to his body and swiped his tongue across Duo’s lips, which opened readily.
A heavy groan escaped Trowa’s throat only to be swallowed by Duo’s mouth as they kissed. There was a passion between them Trowa had never felt and he found himself quickly losing control. While he didn’t have the strength to pull away, fortunately Duo did.
“We goin’ out or stayin’ in?”
Trowa dropped his head back to the door, regaining some semblance of control. “I’d love to stay in, but…”
“It’s too soon.” Duo met his eyes. “Not that I wouldn’t love to take you to bed right now.”
He groaned softly. “At the moment I wish you would.” He sighed. “But you’re right. I don’t want to fuck this up.”
Duo nodded and put space between them so Trowa could get fully dressed. The physical attraction between them was undeniable. Trowa pulled his shirt over his head, and moved to the sofa to slip into his sneakers.
“Where are we going?”
Duo shrugged. “Is there anywhere you want to go?”
“There’s a good bar and grill not far from here.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Trowa followed the braided man to his car, his eyes drifting to the swinging plaited hair as it swayed over the firm ass. He resolutely brought his eyes back up, reminding his body that this relationship was too new for sex.
He sat in the car. “Heard any more about your apartment?”
Duo scrunched his nose. “Yeah, it’ll be unlivable for a couple of months. I’m gonna stay with Quatre until it’s open again or I find something else. It wasn’t the greatest place anyway.” He pulled out of the parking lot. “You got a nice place. Lived here long?”
He shook his head. “Just moved in last weekend and Heero has promised that he’s never helping me move again.”
Duo laughed softly. “How is he?”
Trowa sighed, glancing out the window. “Take the next right and the it’ll be on the left.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Heero has epilepsy and had a seizure at work. His boss is afraid he’ll hurt himself again so wants him to go a few weeks without a seizure before he can come back to work.”
Duo grimaced. “That sucks.”
Trowa nodded. “Yeah, but it makes sense. He’s really struggled with it. He goes through a cycle. He does well on medications for a few years and then the bottom falls out. They’ve taken his license, and trust me when I say that Heero Yuy without a license is one pissed off guy.”
Duo chuckled. “Can’t say I blame him. I’d go crazy if I couldn’t drive.”
“It’s the safest thing, though. Otherwise, he could hurt himself or someone else.”
“Oh, I agree. I’m just saying it sucks.” He parked and got out of the car.
Trowa climbed out and followed Duo into the restaurant. They shared light conversation as they ate before moving to the dart boards, a decision that Duo would somewhat regret later.
Trowa held up his last dart, smirking at Duo’s chagrined expression. He tossed it with seeming negligence and hit the bull’s eye, thus closing all of his numbers and winning the close game of Cricket.
“Damn, Tro, is there anything you’re not good at?”
He sat at the table. “Crosswords.”
Duo started and then laughed. “You’re joking.”
He shrugged. “I’m not good with pop culture.”
“I see.” Duo tilted his head slightly. “So you’ve done the same type of work as Heero and Zechs.”
Trowa froze. This was dangerous ground… very dangerous. “Yes. It got me through college.”
Duo nodded slowly. “You’re embarrassed by it. Why?”
He gazed down at the table, silent for a moment. “It isn’t the classiest of jobs and many people look down on it.”
“I was a thief.”
Wide emerald eyes shot to him. “What?”
“I grew up on the streets and there are only a few options to get money in that situation. Sell yourself, which I wasn’t about to do. Sell drugs, which scared the shit out of me, or steal. I picked pockets, raided stores with bad security, and unfortunately did some random dumpster diving when I had to.”
Trowa’s mind was spinning. “How did you end up where you are now?”
He grinned. “I picked the wrong pocket.” He shrugged. “Or the right one, I guess I should say. I stole from a priest.”
“Really?”
“Yep, and he took me in, put me in school, helped me get into a good college, and the rest is history.”
Trowa sat back in his chair, gazing at the braided man in wonder. “I guess we’ve both had a rough time of it.”
Duo’s grin turned into a soft smile. “And both fought our way through it. So you see, I’m not about to judge you.”
Trowa sipped his water. “My aunt that took me in was an addict. It was better than the streets, but I had to fend for myself. I refused to live the rest of my life like that and worked hard in school. I got several scholarships and grants, but it didn’t quite cover all the expenses.”
He took a breath and met Duo’s eyes. “This is a hell of a lot of sharing for a second date.”
Duo chuckled. “Third. Consider dinner at Quatre’s as a blind date.”
“Doesn’t change the fact that we hardly know each other.”
“Getting to know each other is the whole point of dating.”
Trowa shook his head. “An answer for everything, I see.” He dropped his gaze. “They work at Kushrenada’s, and I did until six months ago.”
Duo swallowed and had to remind himself to not get turned on by the idea of Trowa dancing when the man was obviously not proud of it. He reached over and covered Trowa’s hand on the table. “That’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
He looked up to the braided man. “A lot of people would disagree with you.”
“Does it really matter what they think?”
He thought about it for a moment. “I guess not, but you can’t tell Quatre.”
“He wouldn’t care, but it isn’t my story to tell. I won’t say a word.”
Trowa’s lips curled up slightly in the corners. “Thank you.”
Duo licked his lips. “So, think I could ever get a private dance?”
One fine brow lifted and Trowa’s small smile turned to a smirk. “Anything is possible.”
Duo had never met someone who poured such natural sexual appeal without trying. He folded his arms on the table. “Okay, I have a serious question now. Why accounting?”
Trowa chuckled. “Is it really so hard to believe that I’m simply good with numbers?”
“Yes. Who in their right mind wants to be an accountant?”
“Hey, my dad was an accountant,” Trowa protested.
Duo smiled. “Ah, it’s the family business. I get it. Actually, I’m glad you went that direction.”
“Really? You could have fooled me.”
“Well, if you didn’t then we probably wouldn’t have met.” He glanced to his watch. “How long do you have?”
“I need to be home by seven.”
“Do you trust me?”
Trowa smiled in spite of himself. “With that grin, I’m not sure I should.” Duo pouted and Trowa laughed softly. “All right, I’ll trust you.”
Duo quickly paid their bill and ushered Trowa to his car. There was very little small talk as Trowa watched the scenery change until they were well outside of city limits. Duo turned up a gravel road, drove for half a mile, and parked in a grassy area. Trowa looked to the braided man.
“What’s this?”
“We have a little walk from here.”
Trowa frowned slightly. “Into the woods?”
“Trust me.”
He sighed and followed. After fifteen minutes they reached the edge of a river. Trowa moved to the bank, gazing into the crystal clear waters. The bank across from them spanned at least a mile, and the bends of the river disappeared into the foliage on either side.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Yeah,” Duo agreed. “It’s my hiding place, where I come to remember.”
Trowa glanced to him. “And forget?”
He sat in the thick, soft grass with a rueful grin. “Sometimes.”
He sat beside him. “So what are you doing now, remembering or forgetting?”
“Neither.” He pushed Trowa to his back and brushed cinnamon bangs to the side. “I’m making.”
He sucked in a breath. “Making what?”
“Memories to hold onto.” He pressed his lips to the other man’s.
Trowa allowed the languid kiss. It wasn’t nearly as demanding as their first kiss, but it was far more intimate. Duo pulled away and Trowa blinked his eyes open, gazing up into heated violet that he could easily become lost in.
“Damn,” Duo whispered before taking Trowa’s lips in another kiss, this one far more heated.
He wrapped his arms around the slim waist and pulled the braided man to lie between his legs. Their growing erections pressed together.
Trowa groaned, pulling from the kiss as he gasped for breath. He tilted his head to the side as Duo lapped at kissed at his neck. He slid his hands down to cup Duo’s ass and wrapped his legs around the braided man’s as they thrust against each other.
Duo nibbled at Trowa’s ear. “You’re so hot.”
Trowa shivered as the breath washed over sensitive skin, unable to form a response. He gasped when a warm hand slid under his shirt to tease at his stomach and chest. Another groan ripped from him – this one in protest – when Duo pulled away, but he eagerly accepted the soul-searing kiss he was given. He was pulled back to reality when a hand worked at his zipper and he gripped Duo’s wrist.
“Wait. I’m not-“
“I know,” Duo cut him off softly. “Trust me.”
He swallowed and nodded. Duo lowered his pants enough to free his erection and Trowa sucked in a gasping breath as the braided man fisted their erections together. All too soon it became too much and Trowa clenched his hands in Duo’s shirt as he released between them. A moment later he felt slickness release from Duo and shivered at the heady, hoarse groan that slid over his ear as the taller man collapsed on top of him.
“That was…”
Duo chuckled heavily. “Hm… totally.”
Trowa took a slow breath and folded his arms around Duo’s back. He felt an acute pain in his chest that demanded he ask a question that was too damn needy for his liking, but he desperately need to know the answer. “Please tell me this is going somewhere.”
Duo pushed up to his hands to look into deep emerald eyes. “It better be,” he said softly, heart in his eyes, “or I’m in serious trouble.”
Trowa smiled softly, putting his hand to the back of Duo’s neck and pulling him down for a deep kiss. When they parted, Trowa lapped at the kiss-swollen lips above his own. “You’re going to completely undo me… I can tell.”
Duo shook his head. “I hope you mean that in a good way.”
He smirked. “Definitely.”
