Wufei woke as he felt, rather than heard, sudden movement in the room. Trowa was at the door, listening intently. He caught Wufei's eyes and held up a hand, indicating for him to stay put as he slid out the door. Wufei looked to Heero.
“What's going on?”
“He heard something.”
“What?”
Heero shook his head. “He didn't say.”
Wufei glanced to the door. “Will he be alright alone?”
“He wouldn't have gone alone if he thought he couldn't handle it.”
“What's going on?” Quatre mumbled sleepily from his curl against Wufei's chest.
“Trowa's checking something out.” He glanced at the clock and gaped. It was after ten. “I slept for fourteen hours?”
The bathroom door opened and Duo came out, running a towel through his hair. “Welcome back to the land of the living.”
Quatre sat up, rubbing sleep from his eyes. He smiled to Wufei before jumping up and running to the bathroom. Wufei looked at Duo with a baffled expression and he laughed.
“After fourteen hours, he'll probably be peeing for an hour.”
“Ah.” Wufei sat up fully, stretching his arms over his head. “I forgot about things like that.”
“You don't have to...?” he trailed off as he waved his brush.
He shook his head. “I don't eat or drink, except blood. The only human need I have is sleep.”
“Oh.” He sat on the edge of the bed and began to braid his hair. “So, um, can you clarify some stuff for me?”
“What would you like to know?”
“Well, I guess, from your 'close the curtains' command this morning, the sun kills.” Wufei nodded. “Does garlic, holy water, or crosses have any affect?”
Wufei smirked. “No.”
“Can you enter someone's room if you're not invited?”
“Yes.”
“What about silver?”
He tipped his head slightly. “It doesn't affect us as much as it did werewolves. It slows us down, but we recover from it.”
“It did affect werewolves? Past-tense?”
He nodded. “They're extinct.”
“Hm.” Duo mulled over that a moment. “Stakes in the heart?”
“Yes.” He stood as Trowa came back in the room. “What'd you find?”
“I think we need to get out of here.”
Quatre came out of the bathroom. “What's going on?”
“There are some not too happy people looking for Wufei.”
He grunted. “That's nothing new.”
“There's quite a few.”
He nodded. “Where are they?”
“Lobby.”
Wufei moved to the window and looked down. “Is this too far a drop for you, Heero?”
He rolled his eyes. “No.”
Wufei pursed his lips. “You won't tell me what you are so I don't have a choice but to ask questions.”
Trowa snorted a laugh, but quickly covered it as Heero shot him a narrow eyed look. Duo peered out the window with a raised eyebrow. “Okay, I accept the fact you three have superpowers, but me and Quat are gonna have a problem.”
Wufei ignored him. “Get everything you need, leave behind what you don't.”
Trowa shook his head, quickly stepping out of his pants and shirt and tossing them out the window. “No time.” He raised up the window and looked to his lover. “You got Duo?”
He nodded as Trowa jumped out. Duo leaned out the window and stared wide-eyed as Trowa shifted while falling, bounced off the awning three stories below to slow his fall, and landed gracefully on the ground before pulling his clothes back on. Duo looked to Heero.
“And exactly how do you plan to get down?”
Heero smirked and tossed Duo over his shoulder. He yelped and felt trepidation as Heero jumped out. He expected the ground to come rushing up toward him, but he quickly realized the descent happened much slower than it should have. They landed softly and Duo slid to his feet.
“How the hell did you do that?”
“It would take too long to explain.” He looked up as Wufei stepped out on to the ledge, Quatre clinging to his back.
Wufei cut his eyes over his shoulder. “Trust me?”
“Yes.” And he did, but that didn't stop him from closing his eyes and pressing his forehead to Wufei's shoulder as he stepped off the ledge. His heart pounded as they dropped and he tightened his hold on the Chinese man.
“I've got you.”
Wufei landed first on the awning and then dropped the rest of the way to the ground. He could have made the whole jump, but he didn't think Quatre would appreciate the jolt at the end. Reluctantly, he let the blond slide from his back, missing the warmth almost immediately.
“This way.” Wufei led them through the maze of buildings to the same spot he'd led Quatre and Duo to the morning before. He pressed his lips to a fine line. “Don't they ever give up?” he murmured under his breath before looking to the others. “Stay here,” he whispered.
He slid around the corner and they watched as he disappeared into the darkness.
“Can you see him, Trowa?”
He nodded, emerald eyes following Wufei as he slid through the shadows. They narrowed when another figure dropped in front of the Chinese man, but before Trowa could move, Wufei had taken the figure down.
“Damn,” he whispered.
“What?”
He shook his head. “He just took someone out in a matter of seconds. Threat's over with, I guess, he's waving for us to join him.”
Trowa led them to catch up with Wufei as he entered a small apartment. Quatre glanced around the sparsely furnished living room after Wufei flipped a switch that turned on a lamp in the corner, filling the room in a soft yellow glow. Heavy crimson curtains covered the one window in the room. A leather sofa filled the adjacent wall. There was one picture in the room and it sat on the table that held the TV.
Quatre lifted it and smiled. It was a snapshot taken of the two of them at the New Year’s party a year after the Mariemeia incident. His arm was over Wufei's shoulder. He remembered the picture being taken, but he didn't realize at the time that Wufei had been looking at him, not the camera. He was distracted from the picture when Wufei returned to the living room carrying a large wooden chest. He flipped the lid and Duo whistled.
“Got enough weapons in there?”
Wufei glanced up to Duo as he handed him a crossbow. “Better safe than sorry.”
Duo examined the bolts. Instead of the usual metal head, the wooden posts were filed into miniature stakes. “You sharpen them or can you buy them like that?”
“I do it.” He handed another bow to Quatre. He pulled out larger stakes and shoved them in a band that wrapped around his thigh. He set more out for the others to divide among themselves.
“I try to reuse them if I can, but they're wood, so sooner or later they're going to break. Make sure you have more than one at all times.”
“You didn't have any this morning.”
He nodded, pulling out vials and dropping them in a plastic bag before putting it back in his pocket. “I broke one and the other got stuck. Last night was not a good one.”
“What was in those vials?” Quatre asked.
“Pretty much liquid silver.” He stood, cradling several boxes of ammo. “We need to get out of Vegas.”
“I have my jet. Where do you want to go?”
He shook his head. “Anywhere but here.”
******
A little over thirty minutes later they were in the sky. Duo flew and Quatre made a call to Rashid while the rest took to boarding up the windows. It was hours before dawn and they would be at their destination well before the sun rose, but uncovered windows made Wufei nervous. He was exceedingly glad there was a cockpit and not an open space by the pilot's seat and large flight deck windshield.
The last window boarded, Wufei sat down and sighed. Quatre sat in front of him. “Wufei, what happened the night you disappeared?”
He leaned his head back and stared at the ceiling. “I felt something was wrong the moment I went in the kitchen, but the next moment he was on me and...” He cut his eyes to the blond. “You've experienced how impossible it is to think straight while being fed on.”
Quatre flushed and nodded. “It is a bit distracting.”
Wufei nodded and cleared his throat. “It gets worse with the turn. He didn't stop until I was almost unconscious and then he made me drink his blood.” Onyx eyes narrowed as he recalled his training period. “I woke up and I was his slave. Whatever he asked, I did it. Controlling the power of a newborn is imperative, but some trainers take it too far.” He wrinkled his nose.
“What do you mean?” Quatre asked.
“It's possible to control the power without controlling the mind.”
“Exactly what kind of power do you have?” Duo called from the pilot's seat.
“There are certain traits all vampires have, speed and strength to name a couple, but some can do extra.” He paused, brows drawing together. “I can sense other vampires within a certain range. I'm somewhat faster than most, and I can tolerate a few minutes in the sun.” There was more but he felt that should be enough to appease them.
“How long can you be in the sun?” Heero asked.
“Not more than four or five minutes, and it hurts like hell. I'm not worth anything for days afterwards.”
Heero stared at Wufei intently for a long moment. “Why you?”
Wufei frowned. “Why me what?”
“We're you a random pick for this ancient vampire, or did he purposely choose you?”
He dropped his eyes. Maybe he couldn't get away with keeping the rest from them. “Purposely.”
“Why?”
His jaw flexed as he gathered his thoughts. “It was said in my clan that there were some among us who had a special ability. I'd believed it to be nonsense; just a stupid superstition from ancient days, but Darien proved it true.” He took a breath. “The ability to control dragons.”
Heero's eyes widened and even Trowa looked shocked. “You can control dragons?”
“Yes, I've only done it once and it wasn't my will to do it. The process,” he squirmed slightly in his chair, “pains both dragon and the one controlling it. That was the night my trainer died and I was released.” He closed his eyes. “The dragon died, too. She was a magnificent creature.” He looked to Trowa. “No one has the right to turn them into monsters.”
The shifter nodded. “I am sorry you were forced to.”
“So am I.” He shook his head. “I was suddenly on my own after that. I floundered at first. I didn't know where to go or what to do. I was hunted mercilessly and I started...” He took a breath. “Then Daria's life-mate showed up.”
“Daria?” Quatre asked.
“The dragon. Her life-mate appeared when I was about ready to give up and let myself be baked in the sun. He took care of me, explained certain things to me.”
“He didn't hold you responsible for her death?”
He shook his head. “No. He knew what had happened.”
Heero leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “You cut off earlier. What did you start?”
He cleared his throat. “Having visions.”
“What kind of visions?”
He looked to Quatre. “They don't make much sense. I haven't been able to decipher even one of them.”
He fell silent and it was obvious to all of them that he didn't want to discuss the visions any more. Heero ran back over all the information they'd received from Wufei since being reunited with him. “Are there more outside of the four ancients you mentioned who want this human cattle thing to happen?”
“Just the four and their underlings, but a good majority of them are being controlled. If I can take the four out, I believe he others would go back to normal hunting.”
“Are there many like you?” Quatre asked. “Who don't kill when they feed, I mean.”
He gazed at Quatre silently for a long moment. “I don't always stop. It depends on the person.” He leaned his elbows on his knees. “You have to understand, in order to not completely drain someone; I can only take so much at a time, which means I have to feed more often. If I go too long in between, it's impossible, or at least damn near it, to stop.”
“How often do you need to?” he asked quietly.
“Usually every other day.”
“The same amount you took from me earlier?”
He tore his eyes from Quatre's with a lot of effort. “No.”
Quatre bit his lip, eyes flicking to Trowa and Heero, but they had moved to the front of the jet and were talking quietly to each other. “Do you need-”
“No. I won't turn you into a feeder, Quatre.” He pushed to his feet and moved to the back of the jet.
Quatre followed him. “It would be easier for you and I don't mind.”
“Do you have any idea what a life with me would be like?”
“We could be happy together.”
“Even without this fight... say we won. You'll go back to your job as CEO, the great head of Winner Enterprises.” He ran his fingers through Quatre's soft blond waves. “You belong in a world I can't be a part of.”
“I'm CEO because I didn't have anything else to do. I'm not attached to it. I promised myself that when I found you I'd do whatever it took not to lose you again.”
“I didn't say you would lose me. I just said I wouldn't feed off you.”
“I don't want you feeding off of anyone else!” He turned his back to Wufei, mind reeling at his audacity. But he couldn't help himself. He pressed his hand to the mark on his neck, wishing Wufei would grace him with that feeling again.
“How did you find me?”
He didn't turn at at the whispered question. “The first few months you were gone, I couldn't feel you. I was terrified that you were dead. But then,” he raised the other hand to his chest, “you came back. It was faint at first, but I could feel you more strongly over time. I could feel everything you did. Confusion, fear, danger, loneliness... And I held onto it, afraid you'd disappear again.. I felt that... even if you didn't know I was there, in some way, you weren't alone.”
“But you didn't know where I was.”
Quatre licked his lips, desire washing over him that he couldn't explain. “A few nights ago you were sitting on top of a tall building, looking down over the city. It was breezy and overcast.”
A moment of silence. “How do you know that?”
“I saw it. As in I could see what you were seeing.”
“Has that ever happened before?”
Hot breath washed over his neck and Quatre shuddered. “What are you doing to me?” His voice was a hoarse whisper.
“I'm not doing anything. You're the one drawing me. Just like you always have.” He wrapped his arm around Quatre's waist and the blond tilted his head, silently asked for what they both wanted.
Wufei nuzzled the soft skin, breathing in the rich aroma that was purely Quatre, before sinking his fangs into the scars left from his previous feed. Quatre gasped at the initial prick of pain and then groaned as the sucking began. He clenched his hand to the arm about his waist, not sure if he could remain standing with the pleasure coursing through him. It was as intimate an act as any he'd ever felt and he was gladly drowning in it. Everything else faded away and he was too far gone to realize the gasping breaths filling the cabin with soft moans were his own. The lips left him and a warm tongue lapped at his neck. He shivered and turned in Wufei's arms.
Their lips met in a kiss that was far from chaste. He could taste his blood on Wufei's tongue and he whimpered softly. Strong hands ran down his back to settle on his bottom, pulling him flush against the firm body before him.
“If the kids in the back of the bus would please quit making out and find your seats, we'll be landing shortly.”
Quatre blushed and pulled from Wufei's arms. He sat in his seat and pulled out his phone. “Rashid, is the house cleared out?”
“I'm the last one here. Master Quatre, is everything all right?”
“Yes.”
“Did you find Master Wufei?”
He looked to the Chinese man sitting across from him. “This goes no further than you, Rashid, but yes.”
“Is he unwell?”
He sighed at the guilty expression Wufei wore and the way he was refusing to meet Quatre's eyes. “It's complicated.”
“Might I stay until you arrive? I would like to see him.”
He chewed his lip for a moment before pressing the phone to his shoulder. “Rashid wants to see you.”
Wufei thought it over. He never really spent time with the Maguanac and couldn't fathom why he'd want to see him, but the man was important to Quatre so he didn't want to offend him. “Just Rashid.”
Quatre nodded. “That's all right, Rashid. We'll be there soon.” He flipped the phone closed and found Wufei staring at his neck. “What?”
“Do you have anything you can cover your neck with?”
“Um... is it noticeable?”
Wufei nodded. “Yeah.”
“I'll see what I can find when we're on the ground.”
“Geez, Wufei, if you're gonna mark your man, you should try to do it in less obvious places!” Duo called from the cockpit.
“So the human tries to be cute,” Heero snorted.
“And fails miserably,” Trowa finished.
Wufei raised an eyebrow. “Since when did they finish each other’s sentences?”
Quatre shrugged. “It's been a few years.”
