Wufei stepped into the bridal salon a friend had recommended and was immediately greeted by a tall man with perfectly styled hair and a wide smile.
“You must be Fei,” he exclaimed in an English accent.
“Yes.” He flushed slightly when the man gripped his hand and kissed the back of it. “Michael?”
He smiled. “Yes. Andie tells me that you’re in need of a wedding gown.”
Wufei returned the smile. “Yes, I am, but right now I’m simply looking for ideas. The wedding is a few months off.”
He grinned. “Don’t worry, love. I’ll guide you through the most exquisite wedding.”
He laughed softly. “Well, that’s encouraging.”
Michael smiled. “So, first things first; we must find you a gown. What is your preference?”
“I’d like a corset and flowing skirt.”
“I love corsets. What are your colors?”
“Red, a deep red, and cream. I’d like red accents on the gown.”
He nodded and led Wufei to a section of the boutique. They spent the better part of an hour looking through gowns. None of them exactly fit what Wufei was looking for, but he left with a lot of ideas.
He was supposed to meet Quatre and Zechs at a café not far down the road, so he decided to walk instead of take his car. The street was crowded with people enjoying the nice weather and milling in and out of the many shops on the square. He felt someone bump into him and a slight pinch in the back of his arm.
He looked to the right to see a girl talking to her friend, nail file waving wildly. He frowned at her. “Put that thing away before you seriously hurt someone.”
She cringed. “Sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”
“I figured.” A sudden wave of weakness washed over him and he leaned against the building.
“Honey, are you okay?” a voice he didn’t recognize asked.
“No, I-“
A hand gripped his arm and tugged gently. “Come on, we’ll find you somewhere to lie down.”
He looked to the café and saw his friends about to go in. “Quatre!”
The hand left him and he slid down the wall. Strong arms closed around him.
“What happened?” Zechs asked.
He looked up into worried pale blue eyes. “I don’t know. I feel so weak.”
“Have you eaten today?” Quatre asked with worry as he placed a palm to Wufei’s forehead.
“I never eat before noon.”
“Did anything unusual happen?”
“No.” He leaned heavily into Zechs. “I just suddenly couldn’t… it’s like all the strength just seeped out of me.”
Quatre gripped his hand. “Squeeze my hand as hard as you can.”
He tried but he knew he’d applied hardly any pressure at all. “Gods, what’s wrong with me?”
“Maybe your sugar or iron is off,” Zechs offered. “They can cause weakness.” He looked to Quatre. “We should take her to a hospital.”
Wufei hated hospitals, but he hated being incapacitated even more. “I think… it might be for the best.”
Zechs gripped Wufei’s elbows and pulled him to his feet, but he couldn’t bear his own weight. “I can’t.”
With pursed lips the blond lifted the smaller man into his arms. Wufei looked to Quatre. “Where’s my purse?”
“I’ve got it.”
Zechs climbed into the back of the limo while Quatre instructed the driver to take them to the nearest hospital. Wufei felt like a whirlwind had scooped him up once they reached their destination. He was placed on the most uncomfortable bed known to mankind, had blood drawn, monitors hooked up, answered too many questions, and then it was suddenly quiet.
Heero, Duo, and Trowa had showed up at some point throughout the chaos, and his lover was sitting beside the bed with clear fear in his eyes.
“Do you feel any stronger?”
“No. How long has it been?”
Heero looked to the clock. “A little over two hours.”
He closed his eyes, trying to keep his own fears from setting in. The questions running through his head couldn’t be stopped, though. What if there was something seriously wrong with him? How could this happen when everything was going so perfectly?
“Fei?”
He took a shaky breath. “Hold me, Heero.”
The Japanese man raised the head of the bed so his lover was sitting up, kicked off his shoes, and climbed onto the bed; pulling Wufei into his arms so the Chinese man’s head was pillowed to his chest. “It’s going to be okay.”
Silence reigned for the next half hour before Dr. Clemens returned with two other people. “These are Detectives Hanson and White.”
“Detectives?” Wufei frowned slightly. “Why are they here?”
Hanson moved toward the bed. “The drug found in your system has been used on three murder victims, all of which were transgender women.”
His eyes widened. “Drug?” He looked to the doctor. “Someone drugged me?”
She nodded, brows drawing together. “It’s a new and extremely, dangerously potent muscle relaxer that incapacitates the body but leaved the mine lucid.”
Wufei shivered. That meant the victims were fully aware while they were murdered. “How does he kill?”
Hanson shook her head. “Brutally.” She took a breath. “Did you see him?”
“No, I don’t even know how he drugged me.”
“Needle. That’s how the others were drugged.”
He frowned. “But I don’t…” He trailed off, hand going to his right arm.
Heero pushed up his sleeve and grimaced. “It was a needle. You didn’t notice?”
He flushed slightly. “There was a girl waving her nail file around when she talked with her friend. I thought she hit me.”
The weight of everything hit him. If he hadn’t seen Quatre and Zechs would that man have dragged him off? Would he have been another casualty to a murderer?
“Fei?”
“He tried to take me somewhere.”
“You said you didn’t see him.”
He looked to the male detective. “I didn’t, but he spoke to me.”
White nodded. “Would you recognize his voice if you heard it again?”
“Of course. I wasn’t a Preventer for nothing.”
Rebecca gasped. “You were a Preventer?”
He smirked. “I know I don’t look it, but I can hold my own. Heero, Duo, Trowa, and Zechs are Preventers as well.”
She nodded slowly. “I knew some of them were by their uniforms. I just figured you knew them somehow.”
“Oh I know them, all right.” His mirth faded. “Think he’ll keep hunting me?”
Hanson took a breath. “Probably. As far as we know, you’re the only one who’s managed to escape.”
Duo stepped out into the hall, dialing quickly. “Une.”
“I’m requesting guard duty for myself and Trowa.”
A moment of silence. “And who will you be guarding?”
“Wufei. Someone assaulted him today with plans of murdering him.”
“Where are you?”
“Maury, but you don’t-“ he cringed as the line went dead. He cursed softly and looked to Trowa. “Think she’ll call back later?”
His lover grunted in a negative fashion. “I bet it’s five minutes before she shows up.”
“I won’t take that. Too likely.”
“Fei’s going to kill you.”
He looked to his boyfriend. “You won’t protect me?”
“Hell no, I like my head attached to my body.”
They moved back into the room to find Heero and Wufei glaring at each other. The detective stood with a sigh. She handed her card to Heero. “Why don’t you two talk about it and get back to me?”
Wufei’s scowl dissipated. “I don’t want to fight with you,” he said to Heero as the detectives left the room.
Heero kissed his forehead. “I love you.”
He closed his eyes and nuzzled his head to Heero’s shoulder. “Love you, too.”
They sat in silence for several minutes before two women stormed into the room. Sally froze, jaw dropping to the ground when she saw Wufei. Une paused briefly before moving to the bed. Wide obsidian eyes turned up to her, uncertainty clear in them. She smiled.
“So I finally meet the real you.”
He returned the smile with a weak one of his own. “Guess so.”
She sat on the edge of the bed. “What happened?”
He quickly filled her in on the situation, watching her eyes darken. “My strength is slowly returning, but it’ll be a few hours before I can move fully. They don’t think there are any long term effects, but they don’t have much to go on as I’m the only one that’s lived.”
She cleared her throat, looking to Duo and Trowa. “Request granted. Keep her safe.”
A grunt came from the doorway and all eyes turned to Sally. “Her? He’s sick, Une, don’t encourage this behavior.”
Heero’s eyes narrowed. “Fei is not sick. This is who she is.”
“He needs counselling.”
“No she doesn’t,” Duo growled. “You didn’t have a problem with Fei being gay. Why do you have problems with this?”
She waved her hand toward the bed. “This indicates deep rooted mental problems. It’s unnatural. You are not a woman, Wufei.”
“I-.”
She sneered. “You look ridiculous.”
“Sally! That’s enough!” Une glowered at the other woman. “Go back to headquarters.”
“Headquarters?” Duo questioned. “The bitch should be suspended for harassment of a victim of assault.”
She nodded. “The idea has merit. Go back to HQ, we’ll discuss this when I get there.”
The braided woman spun on her heel and stormed out with a parting, “disgusting.”
Wufei stared at the empty doorway. Sally had been something of a sister to him. He hadn’t thought she’d react like that.
“Fei?” He looked to Une. “She’s wrong. You’re beautiful.” He flushed slightly and she squeezed his shoulder. “And exhausted, I’m sure.” She looked to Duo and Trowa. “Keep me posted.”
Wufei looked to them. “Who called her?”
Duo ducked his head. “I did.”
A moment of silence and then, “thank you.”
That startled all of them. “I kinda figured you’d bash my head in.”
Wufei shook his head. “No, it’s good she knows.” He frowned. “Sally’s response was unexpected.”
“She was being a bitch.”
He grimaced. “Not everyone is as accepting.” He yawned and rested his head back to Heero’s chest.
“Get some sleep guys. We’re on guard.”
