Lyri awoke the next morning alone. She sat up and stretched. The hum of the engines confused her and she hurriedly changed and went to the cockpit. As she got closer, she could hear Bulma talking and Vegeta giving her short answers. Another wave of jealousy washed over her and she turned and headed to the galley at the back of the ship. She poured herself a cup of coffee and leaned against the counter.
‘You need to stop,’ she told herself, ‘It’s not real. He’s allowed to pursue whoever he wishes...’
She sipped her drink while lost in her thoughts. She barely noticed Kakarot and Kiki walk in, sweaty and trying to catch their breath.
“Hey Lyri,” Kakarot said grabbing two water bottles, tossing one to Kiki.
“Hmm...” Lyri said, still lost in thought. Kakarot pinched her arm. “Ow! What?” Lyri snapped.
“You were out of it,” he said.
“Sorry. Was lost in my own thoughts,” Lyri said.
“Worried that Vegeta is going to drop you for Bulma?” Kiki asked. Lyri glared at her but said nothing. “I wouldn’t worry too much. Father would never allow it. Hell, I can’t wait to see what he says when Vegeta tells him that he’s chosen you,” Kiki continued.
“It’s a good thing that Vegeta doesn’t give a shit what your father thinks,” Lyri said.
“That may be, but he's still the king and he has the last say about everything,” Kiki said. Kakarot nodded in agreement.
Lyri rolled her eyes. “Whatever, princess.” She left the pair and went to train and eventually took over watch from Kakarot later in the day. After her watch, she showered and climbed in bed. Vegeta wasn’t there yet. She turned off the lights and tried to sleep. She was awoken some time later by Vegeta pulling her to him again. He held her close and she wondered why he was doing this. She eventually fell back asleep.
The same thing happened the next night. She fell asleep before he returned to the room and was awoken when he pulled her to him. She never complained. But she wondered why he would do this if it was supposed to be an act.
‘Maybe to make it more believable?’ she thought, ‘I mean...after these past couple of nights, our scents are all over each other.' She shifted in his arms, turning towards him. He was asleep or pretending to be. She studied him while he slept.
“Stop watching me,” he muttered. So he was pretending. He opened his eyes and looked at her. “Why are you watching me sleep?”
“I wasn’t,” she whispered.
“You were.”
“You weren’t sleeping, so I wasn’t watching you sleep,” Lyri told him.
Vegeta stared at her. She had a point. “Go to sleep.”
“I’m trying,” she told him.
They were silent and Lyri eventually fell back asleep. Vegeta snuck a peak at her. She looked peaceful, using her arm as a pillow. Her tail flicked behind her once before coming up and laying on his hip. He looked at her sleeping face again. He'd rather die by extreme measures than tell anyone, but he actually liked sleeping with her in his arms. He found her presence comforting. He moved his tail to lay across her legs and pulled her closer. He inhaled deeply, letting her calming pressence soothe him, and drifted back off to sleep.
The next day was nearly the same except Lyri was awake when Vegeta came in. He glanced at her before heading to take a shower. She was still awake when he came out. “What happens tomorrow after we land?” she asked him.
“One of the servants will take your things to my quarters,” he told her.
“And your father?” she asked.
“You’ll come with me when I inform him that you are my intended. It won’t be tomorrow,” he said.
“And if he sees through your plan?” Lyri asked.
Vegeta thought about that. He hadn’t really thought about what he would do if his father saw through his plan. “He won’t,” he told her.
Lyri looked unsure but didn’t question him. She was quiet for a minute and he thought she was done with the questions. “Why me?” she asked in a whisper.
Vegeta thought about how to answer that. He wasn't even sure why he had asked her.
“You could have anyone. For this or for real. So...why me?” she asked.
“Don’t worry about it and don’t over analyze it,” he told her. He climbed in bed and pulled her to him.
Lyri considered asking why he always held her when they slept but decided against it. He’d probably tell her it was nothing anyway. She settled into his arms and drifted off to sleep. Vegeta felt her relax in his embrace. He held her as close as possible and fell asleep.
Lyri awoke and immediately went to the cockpit after getting dressed. Kakarot was there and she took the empty seat next to him.
“We’ll be landing soon,” he told her.
She nodded.
“You ok?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she said.
He glanced at her.
“Ok! No! I’m nervous as hell!” she snapped.
“Nervous about what the king will say?” Kakarot asked.
“Of course! It’s no secret that he didn’t want me to be Kiki’s protector. I only got the job because I lasted the longest against Vegeta. What’s he going to say when he learns that Vegeta has chosen me?” she asked. Her face paled. “What if he gets so upset that he gives me orders to Frieza’s ship?”
“Woah. That’s a stretch. I don’t think he’d do that,” Kakarot told her. Lyri looked at him. “Yeah, he probably would...” he muttered.
They were quiet, both now worried about that possibility. Lyri pulled up the map. Two hours until they were home.
“Hey guys!”
Lyri turned in her seat and looked at Bulma.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey, Bulma!” Kakarot said with a smile.
“What’s your map say?” Bulma asked.
“We land in two hours,” Lyri told her.
“What’s your home world like?” Bulma asked.
“Hot,” the Saiyans answered in unison.
“Hot?” Bulma asked.
“Well...the planet is mostly desert. There’s a couple mountain chains on the other side of the planet,” Lyri told her, “We’ll be in the capital, so it’s modernized until you get near the outskirts.”
Kakarot nodded. “Lyri and I grew up in a small village near the outskirts of the capital.”
“What was it like growing up on your planet?” Bulma asked.
Kakarot shrugged. “It was normal, I guess. We were trained young and started going on missions when we were about five...”
“Wait...training? Missions?” Bulma asked.
Lyri looked at her. “Yeah. You don’t do that on your planet?”
“No! We go to school and have friends and fun...” Bulma told her.
“We have lessons,” Kakarot told her.
“You don’t have fun? Or friends? You two are friends...right?” Bulma asked.
“Kakarot and I are different than most. His family took me in when my parents died. We’re close because we’re siblings, essentially. If it weren’t for that, we’d be partners or comrades,” Lyri told her.
Bulma nodded.
Lyri looked at the map. An hour until they landed. Her stomach twisted itself back into a knot. She tuned out Bulma and Kakarot and tried to calm herself down. Vegeta told her that his father wouldn’t see through his plan, so she should believe him. Right? Kakarot nudged her.
“Huh?” Lyri asked.
“We need to get ready to land,” he told her.
She hadn’t realized that the hour had passed. She nodded and turned off the autopilot while Kakarot took the controls and navigated them through the atmosphere and onto the shipping dock. The group exited the ship and Vegeta muttered to Lyri, “The woman can have your old room. I already sent orders to have your things placed in my quarters. Show her where she is staying then find me.”
Lyri nodded. “Bulma, I’ll show you to your room.”
Bulma nodded. She was looking around, amazed. “Wow...”
“You didn’t have palaces on your planet?” Lyri asked.
“Not like this,” Bulma admitted.
The pair walked through the halls of the palace. Bulma would ask questions every once in a while and Lyri would answer as best she could. They got to Lyri’s old room and Lyri led Bulma inside. “It’s huge!” Bulma said walking in.
Lyri noted that her things were indeed gone and it looked like no one had ever lived here. “It is,” she agreed.
“Where is your room?” Bulma asked.
Lyri looked at her, unsure of why she’d want to know.
“I mean, I don’t know anyone here. I’d like to get to know you better. Kakarot, too. He seems nice,” Bulma explained.
“Kakarot stays in the barracks on the other side of the palace,” Lyri told her, “Unfortunately, you won’t be able to access where I’m staying because it’s in the royal wing.”
“Oh yeah,” Bulma said, “You live with Vegeta, right?”
“Yes,” Lyri said.
“How long have you two been together?” Bulma asked, sitting on the bed.
“Not long,” Lyri told her.
Bulma looked surprised.
“Things move fast in Saiyan relationships,” Lyri explained.
Bulma nodded.
“I should get going,” Lyri said, “I’ll make sure someone shows you were the lab is.”
“Ok!” Bulma said.
Lyri bid her farewell and left for the royal wing. The guards the stopped her.
“I’m here to see Prince Vegeta,” she told them.
“The prince isn’t here,” one of the guards told her.
“He wouldn’t want to see you anyway,” the other guard sneered.
Lyri glared at the guards but left instead of arguing with them. She sensed and found Vegeta’s ki near the throne room. She headed towards Vegeta’s ki and waited outside the room. She guessed he was briefing the king on what happened. A few minutes later, Vegeta emerged from the room. Vegeta looked at her.
“I would have waited in your quarters, but the guards wouldn’t let me pass,” she told him.
He motioned for her to follow him. When they reached the royal wing, they stopped.
“She’s allowed to come and go as she pleases,” he told the guards.
“Yes, sir,” they said.
Vegeta led Lyri to his quarters. He opened the door and led her inside. Lyri looked around. The room opened into a living space with a couch and love seat on one side and a large desk with a couple round metal objects and stacks of paper on it. There were two doors on the far side of the room, which she guessed led to the bathroom and bedroom. A pair of French style doors next to the desk must have led to a balcony. It was bigger than her old room, which had just been a bedroom and bathroom. Hells, her old room could fit in the living space.
Lyri started to feel uncomfortable. Like she shouldn’t be there. She didn’t deserve to be there. She was a freak. The prince deserved better than her.
“You’ll need to look presentable when we meet with my father.”
She hadn’t noticed that he walked over to the table. He had taken his scouter off and was leaning against the table, looking at her.
“I’ll see what I have...” she told him.
She made her way through the bedroom, which was just as big as the living space, and found the closet. She was surprised that her clothes had been placed in there with Vegeta’s. She thumbed through her training suits.
“I’m a warrior not a princess...” she muttered to herself, “There’s nothing in here that will make me look presentable...”
“I’ll take you to get something tomorrow,” Vegeta said loudly.
Lyri could sense him still in the living space. ‘Stupid super sensitive Sayain hearing,’ she thought. She left the closet and walked back out to Vegeta. He had his back turned to her and was looking at a map that was being projected from one of the metal objects. She walked up behind him and saw he was watching Frieza’s ship on the map.
“That’s Frieza’s ship,” she said.
Vegeta clicked the map off. Lyri took a step towards him.
“Why are you keeping track of Frieza’s ship?” she asked.
Vegeta turned and started walking to the bedroom. “We’ll go into the capital tomorrow to get you a couple things to wear that are more suitable than your fighting wear.”
Lyri followed him. “Why are you tracking Frieza’s ship, Vegeta?” she asked again.
“Forget what you saw and speak of it to no one,” Vegeta told her.
Lyri felt nervous as she asked, “Are the rumors true?” With the possibility of her getting orders to the tyrant’s ship, she had to know. “You’ve been to his ship...are the rumors true?”
Vegeta glared at her over his shoulder. Lyri instantly regretted asked.
“I’m sorry,” she said. She backed up and left the bedroom. She returned to the living space and sat on the couch. Her mind wandered and she wished slightly that she hadn’t agreed to this. Well, that wasn’t really true. She wish that this wasn’t an act to fool the king. If it wasn’t then she wouldn’t be here worrying that she would be getting orders that were a death sentence. The rumors that she had heard most of her life played through her head. Saiyans were tortured by Frieza and his men. Used as punching bags. The women were thrown into the on board brothel and raped. Most didn’t return to Planet Vegeta. The ones that did were distant and suffered from PTSD. She stood and left.
‘Nothing I can do about. If I get the orders, I get the orders,’ she thought as she left the royal wing.
She made her way to the training grounds. There were several Saiyans sparring against each other. She watched for a bit then joined in, sparring with some of the men. She was sparring with her third partner, glad to throw her frustrations into a fight, when he asked her something.
“Prince Vegeta has chosen you, right?” he asked, throwing a punch at her
Lyri dodged the punch. “Where’d you hear that?”
“Kakarot told Raditz,” he told her.
Lyri growled. ‘Fucking hell, Kakarot!’ she thought. She dodged another punch.
“You must feel lucky,” he said before quickly grabbing her shoulders and kneeing her in the stomach.
Lyri held her stomach and glanced at her sparring partner. “Why’s that?”
“Because he chose you. Face it, freak. If he hadn’t chosen you, you would have ended up alone.”
Lyri threw a punch into his jaw. Then another. She jumped up and swung around to kick him in the side of his head. He stumbled back.
“Fucking bitch!” he said, spitting blood out of his mouth.
Lyri glared at him. He ran at her and she threw a strong ki blast at him. He flew back and landed on the other side of the grounds. She flew over and knelt over him and punched him in the face over and over again.
