Lyri woke up the next morning alone. She sat up in bed, wondering if last night was real. She got up and walked to the bathroom, wanting a hot shower to soothe the parts of her that ached. When she saw her reflection, she was shocked. Bruises, bite marks and scratches marred her body. She twisted her hair up and checked her neck. She had a bite mark there, but it wasn’t a deep bite. Only a bruise. She let her hair fall and leaned against the counter. Her eyes closed and she searched herself to see if the was a bond between her and Vegeta. She didn’t feel one. Lyri opened her eyes and stared at her reflection. She was somewhat relieved. While she still cared for Vegeta, she was still hurt because of the things he had said in the past. She shook her head and got in the shower. She scrubbed herself down until she was pink and could no longer smell him on her. She got out, flared her ki to quickly dry off and got dressed. She turned her comm on as she put her scouter on and it clicked on.
“Hey, you’re out of our star system, right?” Nix asked her through the comm.
“Yeah, why?” Lyri asked.
“There’s a handful of Saiyans that apparently disagreed with the decision to not be soulless monsters. The people of planet Bristene have contacted us saying that these handful are causing havoc on their planet. Can you take care of it for me?” he asked.
“Um...yeah,” she told him.
“What’s wrong?” Nix asked.
“Broly kinda tagged along. He’s ok and all but, I don’t know if he’s ready for something like this,” Lyri said.
“Just tell him that you think he’s not ready,” he said.
“And get my ass handed to me?” she asked.
“No, listen. All his life, Broly has been lied to and used-“ he started before Lyri interrupted him.
“Aren’t we lying to him, though? I didn’t want to be around him,” she pointed out.
“You’re not lying to Broly. He knows that he’s one of the last people you want around, but he’s sees that you’ve been persistent,” he paused and added, “Broly has always been more kind natured than most people would like to believe, but because of his power level, people have always lied about their intentions to him. As long as you’re open and honest with him, he’ll be fine.”
“Nix...how do you know all that?” Lyri asked.
“I’ll tell you when we have more time,” Nix said. He disconnected before she could say anything else.
Lyri sighed in frustration and left her room. She knocked on the door to Broly’s room and when he opened the door a crack she asked, “Can we talk?” He hesitated but opened the door for her and she walked in. She looked up at and hoped Nix was right. “So, um, Nix just touched base. There’s some shit going down on a different planet and he wants me to take care of it. And, um, no offense, but I don’t think you’re ready for something like that.”
Broly looked down at her. “Ok.”
Lyri blinked, confused. “You’re not mad?”
“No,” he told her.
Lyri was bewildered, even though Nix told her that Broly would understand. “Ok. Uh, then let’s go.” Broly nodded and followed her to the front desk, where she returned the room keys. They made their way back to the docking station and were stopped by an attendant.
“Hey, you. Payment!”
Lyri looked at him. She didn’t have any credits on her. “Shit...” she muttered.
“Might want to turn around and head back towards the city, then. Maybe one of the clubs will hire you,” the attendant said.
Lyri considered just beating the snot out of the attendant. “Here’s your payment. If I get word of you calling a Saiyan a whore again, I will have your head,” Vegeta growled at the attendant. With the attendant gone, he turned to glare at Lyri. “You’re welcome.”
“I didn’t need your help,” she told him.
Vegeta ignored her, pushing past them both. Lyri rolled her eyes and her and Broly headed to his pod. She entered the coordinates for Planter Vegeta in the pod’s navigation system and watched as he climbed in and took off. She was about to head to her pod, but stopped and sought out Vegeta. She found him as he was climbing into his pod. She stood on its door, not letting it close.
“Move,” he growled.
“No,” Lyri said.
Vegeta glared at her. “I said, move.”
“I don’t take orders from you,” she told him.
Vegeta leaned forward in his seat and looked up at her. “What do you want?”
There was none of his usual anger in his voice, which confused Lyri. “You’re leaving again,” she said. She mentally smacked herself. ‘No shit, dumbass,’ she thought.
“No, I just like sitting in this pod,” he told her sarcastically. “You’re leaving, too.”
“Yeah, but I’m going back home after my mission,” she told him, “Are you ever going back?”
Vegeta climbed out of the pod. “Eventually. When I feel like I’m strong enough...” He forced her off the door and turned to get back in the pod.
“So you’re abandoning your people again?” Lyri asked.
He turned around. “What would you have me do? Go back and grovel at Nix’s feet? Beg for my throne?” he snapped, “Go back to a place where my own people didn’t want me? No. I’ll return on my terms.” He turned back to his pod.
“I wanted you,” Lyri said quietly. She saw him hesitant before climbing back into his pod. A thought passed through her mind and she quickly acted on it. She jumped in the pod with him, settling in on his lap.
“What the hells are you doing?” Vegeta asked.
“Until your done with your woe is me trip,” she told him, “Or until I can convince you that you belong back on Planet Vegeta, you are coming with me.” She began to enter Bristene’s coordinates into the navigation system.
“Get out!” he snapped. He tried to shove her off his lap, but she wrapped her tail around him. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fine. I’ll come with you. But we’re getting a bigger ship. You’re heavy.”
“You weren’t complaining last night,” Lyri teased.
“Shut up!” he snapped. Lyri climbed out of the pod and stood on its door until Vegeta climbed out. “Wait here.” He left her there with his pod. She knew that she should follow him but decided to trust that he wouldn’t leave her there. He came back after about fifteen minutes.
“You actually came back,” she said.
“You seem surprised,” he said, “Come on.”
He led her towards a small ship. He climbed aboard and she followed. They took a seat in the cockpit and Lyri navigated them off of Spes and into space. She entered Bristene’s coordinates into the autopilot and sat back in her seat. It was quiet.
“It was said out of anger,” Vegeta muttered, staring out the window, “What I said. In the prison.”
Lyri glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes. She had never known him to apologize. “I know,” she told him. If she had said anything else to him, she knew he would have either gotten mad or closed himself off. “So...what were you doing on Spes?”
“None of your business,” he muttered.
“And just like that, you’re back to being an ass,” she said.
“And you’re still a nosy bitch,” Vegeta told her.
Lyri rolled her eyes. “You can call me nosy all you want, but I’m just...”She stopped herself from saying that she was worried about him. “Anyway, what were you doing?”
“Didn’t I just say it was none of your business?” he asked.
“You did,” she said.
“Since it seems you are hard of hearing, I’ll say it again. It’s none of your business,” he told her.
“You know, this is probably why no one trusted you when you were the king,” she said, “Because you close yourself off and never clue anyone in on what your planning!”
“Fuck this,” Vegeta muttered. He left her in the cockpit.
Lyri listened to him make his way somewhere else within the small ship and heard the pop of a capsule opening then a door slam. She slammed her fists on the instrument panel in anger. She sat back in the chair, leaned on her face on her hand and watched the blackness of space drift by.
Hours drifted by and Lyri finally left her spot in the cockpit. She made her way to the small galley and opens the cabinets and fridge. The ship had obviously been fully restocked when Vegeta acquired it. She grabbed a couple of things and made some food. She ate alone and cleaned up. She walked across the small hall and into the bedroom where she saw the gravity room set up and the corner. She knew he’d be in there a while. She looked at the bed and groaned. One bed. She grabbed a pillow and the top blanket and went to set up her make shift bed in the galley. When she was done she made some food for Vegeta. Actually, she made him a lot of food. She took his food and set it gently on the bed. She stood in front of the gravity room for a minute before knocking on the door. He didn’t answer. She left and went back to the galley. She sat on the blanket, leaned against the pillow and pulled out the capsule that contained the journals. She popped it open and continued reading where she left off.
Vegeta listened to the knock as it echoed through the room. He ignored it and continued on with what he was doing. Gods, did she annoy him. He should have fucking left her back on Spes. He powered down the gravity room and stepped out. He glanced at the food on the bed. He wasn’t about to be bought with food, so he grabbed the plates and returned them to the galley. He glanced at Lyri, who was watching him from behind the journal. Her eyes flicked back to the pages when she noticed Vegeta watching her. “I didn’t want to be on Spes,” he told her. Once again he found himself opening up to her.
Lyri closed the journal. “Then why were you?” He said nothing. “Vegeta, I’m not asking just to be nosy. If you want, I could help you in whatever you were there for.”
“What makes you think I need or want your help?” he asked.
“Don’t be difficult,” she told him.
Vegeta smirked. “Have you meet me?”
“Yeah, guess that’s asking for too much,” she said, “In all seriousness, Vegeta, if you want it, I’ll help in any way I can.” She gave him a small smile before returning to the journal.
He watched her read for a few minutes. “What are you hoping to get out of those?”
“Nothing,” she told him, putting the book down again, “I didn’t want them. I didn’t even know they existed until Nix gave them to me. I’m only reading them because he asked me to.”
“What is Nix hoping to find then?” Vegeta asked.
“To be honest, I don’t know,” Lyri told him, “I think he wants to make sure that there’s nothing else that’s been kept from us.”
“Then you should only be reading my father’s journals,” he told her. She looked at him with some confusion so he added, “There’s nothing in the others that would affect the Saiyans now. Everything that has happened...Frieza, the program...it’s all going to be in his journals.” He paused and told her, “That’s why I was on Spes...Frieza...”
Lyri sat up. “What about him? He’s dead, isn’t he?”
“According to rumors, no,” Vegeta told her.
“But rumors are just that, rumors. More times than not, there’s never any truth to them,” she said.
“It’s always eaten at me how it all ended,” he muttered, “He always bragged about being the strongest and yet he didn’t lift a finger to defend himself.”
“You think the rumors are true,” Lyri said.
“I think they’re worth looking into,” he said.
“I can help,” she said.
“No,” he told her, “I will do this on my own.” He looked at her. “But you won’t let me do that.”
“No, I won’t,” Lyri said. She stood and walked over to him. “Let me help.”
“You never said what your mission was,” Vegeta said, changing the subject.
“I have to go deal with some rogue Saiyans on Bristene,” she said.
“Do you have any information about these Saiyans?” he asked.
She shook her head. “No. All I know is that they didn’t agree with the changes that have been happening back home.”
“Those pathetic dumbasses will have two options,” he said, “Go home, beg for leniency and do as told...”
“Or?” Lyri asked. Vegeta gave her a look, telling her that she knew what the or was. “We can’t just kill them.”
“Why not? They are refusing to listen to orders set by the leader of our planet,” he said.
“It just feels wrong,” she mumbled.
“Are we or are we not trying to better the Saiyan name?” Vegeta asked.
“We are,” Lyri answered.
“Then we cannot have rogue Saiyans roaming the universe doing whatever they want,” he said.
“You’re right,” she said.
“We’ll decide the best course of action when we get there,” he told her. He walked out of the galley, abruptly ending the conversation.
Lyri returned to the makeshift bed. She capsulized the journals and situated herself in the blanket. As she settled in she muttered a good night to Vegeta, but he didn’t answer. The only noise in the ship was from the hum of the engines.
