A/N: It may seem like I'm repeating a theme in here too often. However, I promise you that I used the actual time measurement they gave us for how long everyone was training for the tournament. I didn't just use it for plot convenience - they actually say that it was 28 days till the tournament the day of or after telling everyone that Goku gets to come back for the day.
Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty
The days went by rapidly; much faster than you thought they would. A large part of you seemed to count them down with such eagerness that you felt much like a child waiting for summer vacation. You knew why too - Goku was coming back. For the day, sure, but he would still be back. The other part of you wished that the day would never come. You were angry and upset that he was gone to begin with. A day of him being back seemed like a cruel joke. Especially since he wouldn't remember you. That was by your own choice, sure, but...the closer you got to the day of the tournament the fresher the wound felt. You wanted to hit something.
What made it worse was that Gohan had made it seem like it was the best thing in the world. He'd talked about being excited to see his father again after so many years while he was in the hyperbolic time chamber. You'd gotten a lot of different anecdotes from him on his time spent with Goku over the course of six months that it only further confused you about the situation. Not that you told Gohan any of that. You didn't want him to feel bad about sharing something he was passionate about. Especially when you knew that the story came from a place of comfort. After all, he'd tell you a lot of his stories after you'd woken up from a nightmare. Apparently he'd had nightmares often when he was younger too. Which only confirmed your idea that he'd gone through a lot as a kid. Though what that said about your mental state...you weren't quite sure.
Your phone gave a soft ping, letting you know that you had a message. There weren't too many people with your number so it wasn't a surprise when you saw that Gohan had messaged you. After a lot of reasoning and maybe a little bit of peer pressure, you'd convinced Gohan to let you get him a simple phone. It wasn't anything fancy and you didn't pay for any outrageous plan or anything like that. It was what most people would call a burner phone but it worked for the purpose it was intended for - communication.
Wonderboy: Are you awake?
You: nope
Wonderboy: Very funny.
You: i thought so
Wonderboy: You ready to go to the island?
You: i might not go
Before you got a reply, Gohan was knocking at your door. Which was nice of him, really, considering that he could have just transmitted himself into your apartment without asking yet he did the polite thing and went to your door instead. Yes, after six months / half a day of being in the chamber, you had taught Gohan Instant Transmission. It seemed only fair given the amount of work he put into helping you. Besides it felt like a trade. Now you could fly everywhere and he could actually get to places on time.
You pulled on the thinest robe you currently had and stood at the door. Did you want to open it? Yes. For all the wrong reasons. Were you going to open it? Probably. Should you? Probably not. But you did it anyways.
Gohan was there with a confused expression on his face as he held out his phone. Like you didn't know what you had just typed. You took a deep breath and stepped backwards, letting him in before closing the door behind you.
"Why don't you want to go? It'll be awesome. Everyone will be there."
"...it's a bad idea," you mumbled.
"Why?" Gohan prompted, trying to understand your sudden change.
You felt bad for springing it up on him. You really did. Especially considering the fact that he'd asked you to go weeks ago at this point - just after you got out of the hyperbolic time chamber. He'd seemed so excited about the prospect of everyone meeting up and introducing you to everyone that you'd agreed without considering it very much. You'd even bought a ticket for the event right before they sold out. They were so damned expensive too. But you'd told him that you'd go cheer him on before you looked at a calendar.
"The moon will be out tomorrow Gohan," you told him, not meeting him in the eye.
Tomorrow you'd spiral down into a trail of hormone laiden thoughts. And if the last year of your life (what you remember...not counting the time chamber) had taught you anything it was that it probably wasn't a smart idea. Especially considering how messed up and twisted your thoughts and emotions were with Goku already. Then there was Vegeta and Gohan to consider. While Vegeta made it clear he didn't want you around and thus actually was the master of his own instincts, you weren't so sure that you were as disciplined. After everything Bulma had done you didn't want to end up making a fool of yourself by drooling over him. And Gohan? Well he didn't seem to be as affected by it so far but he was hott even when you weren't in heat. You didn't want to push it. You liked the easy going, open friendship you had with him. It made dealing with trying to be normal easier when there was someone else who understood how far from normal you actually were. And that they shared in that with you for the most part.
Gohan looked sort of confused as he stood before you, "But that's tomorrow. Not today."
"What if it takes two days?"
"You'll be fine," Gohan assured. "I mean as long as you don't go stargazing, everything will be fine."
"I wasn't even thinking about that. Oh god that makes this 100 times worse," you bemoaned the situation.
Gohan laughed at the childish pout you got and how you crossed your arms. "Come on, it's not like anything's going to happen. And if it does, I'll be right there to help."
"...what if that's the problem?" you muttered to him.
And then you went red just at about the same pace as he did. You wisely decided not to try and speak because anything you said would probably just come out wrong at that point.
"Promise if something happens you'll run defense?" you asked quietly, not looking at him. "Like, you'll punch me in the gut or knock me out?"
"Oh gheese, I'm sure it won't get that bad. I think you're exaggerating."
"Gohan, you haven't been inside my head. Don't tell me I'm exaggerating."
"Fine. Yes, I promise that I'll keep you from making a bad decision. But I'm positive you're just overthinking it."
"Whatever you say Wonderboy. Just remember that promises are meant to be kept forever."
You didn't know it but at that very moment, Gohan had a feeling of deja'vu. That was something he used to hear his dad (Goku) say all the time - that promises were meant to be kept forever. It was kind of eerie given what he knew now. He wasn't sure who said it first. If you got it from his dad that wouldn't have been so bad. But if his dad somehow got it from you despite the fact that he couldn't remember you, that was actually both worrisome and interesting all at the same time. Instead, Gohan tried to brush it off as he smiled at you with that patterned Son smile.
"Alright, get dressed. Goten has been bothering me since the sun rose to bring you back home so we can go. But I wanted to introduce you to my mom before we all head out."
Last time he forgot to introduce a girl to his mom it hadn't been pretty. Videl had been called plenty of names - like Hussy for one. And then they'd proceeded to get into a verbal fight. He wasn't quite sure how you'd handle that type of situation given that you hadn't want to be at his house to begin with. Ever since hearing your story, Gohan had chalked it up to there being painful reminders that his father was dead. He didn't want to make it any worse by starting your day off with an argument.
You, on the other hand, felt like you'd been neatly trapped. You'd been avoiding seeing Gohan's family all together since that first night. Even though you'd befriended the other teenager it didn't mean you wanted to see his happy family all together. That would have been a bit much. But this whole tournament thing meant a lot to Gohan; you didn't want to bring your own issues into it. Besides, if you were lucky, you'd only have to be around Chichi for a handful of minutes. Or at least just for the length of the flight. You still had no idea why Gohan insisted that everyone take the airplane together. You would have thought since he knew Instant Transmission now that it would be the much more practical way to go. But nooooo, he wanted to do it the snailmail way. Which was a shame. You would have loved to fly there. Flying was the best. (Though secretly you still believed that Nimbus was the best)

"Another girl, Gohan?!" Chichi raged from inside the house.
You waited outside until Gohan had finished giving his mother a sort of warning. It was apparently the polite thing to do. You trusted his choice on that. He knew his mother better than you did. And the moment you heard her tone you were quite glad of that. Was there any reason to use a tone like that when Gohan was just trying to tell her that you existed?
"I didn't let you attend school just so you can meet girls! Besides, what happened to Videl? I thought you were dating her!"
Gohan mumbled something that you just barely caught, and it sounded quite embarrassed. "Mom, it's not like that. And I'm not dating Videl. We're just friends."
"Don't like to your mother Gohan! I won't stand for it. Now look here, I know that you want to make friends but you need to think about your future! What kind of a future can you have if you don't focus on what's important huh?! You're supposed to be going to school to focus on your studies so you can grow up to be a lawyer! And the only reason I let you take the month off to train was so that you can win that prize money! We need that money to live on Gohan! And without it, how will you afford your college tuition huh? Tell me that!"
Damn she sounded like a dragon. And not in the good way. You tried to wait patiently outside the door but you were getting rather peeved at her. You knew that she was his mother but there seemed to be a complete lack of respect coming from her. She'd gotten so far off topic that you really did question her sanity. You knew that deep down she just wanted what was best for her son but still...she seemed a bit obsessive. How the hell did Goku ever settle down with someone this over the top?
"Don't worry mom! In fact, because of her, I got a lot of training done! I promise, I haven't been slacking off," Gohan tried to defend his position.
It felt quite unneeded in this situation but he made a valiant effort. You hummed to yourself as the two continued to bicker back and forth.
"Oh really?" Chichi sounded sarcastic. "What kind of training would that be hmm?"
You did not like the insinuation in her voice. What was it with people assuming that you were sleeping with all your male friends? Okay, so the fact that it happened with Goku was beside the point. That hadn't been intentional; it had been great at the time but not exactly something that you had planned. If anything, he'd been the one to plan that.
"She's a Saiyan just like Vegeta and dad," was part of what you caught Gohan say.
And just like that the cat was out of the bag. Chichi pulled open the main door to the house and looked at you. Fire seemed to be radiating from her body as she stormed up. She stopped just a foot away from your face and even that seemed to be a compromise compared to what she really wanted.
"So your a Saiyan huh? You think that makes you special? That you get to distract Gohan from his studies and his training? Well it doesn't!"
"I'm not distracting him."
Oh dear lord you started her off in a tangent about how Gohan was going to be a lawyer. It didn't even seem to sink in to her that you really didn't care. You looked over towards Gohan as you felt your anger rising higher and higher as she found ways to try to insult you. Calling you a brute and a distraction were probably the least offensive things.
"Look ma'am. Why would I want to distract Gohan from either of those things?" You practically bit back. "He's like the best kid in our class - why would I stop him? It's important that he finishes school so he can move on to what he wants to do."
Chichi leaned back a little, as though she was stunned by your question. It was like no one had ever defended Gohan's studies.
"He wants to be a lawyer," Chichi said passionately. "And you're not going to distract him."
"If he wants, he could be the first ambassador to other world nations for all I care," you vollied back to her almost in an angry tone.
"Just stay away from my son," Chichi remarked. "He doesn't need another tramp following him around cheering him on when he has his mother."
You were so tempted to tell her to stay away from your husband. So...very...tempted. But you held your tongue as you stared at her. She was just not someone you ever saw yourself getting along with.
"Gohan," you called out with gritted teeth. "I'll meet you there when you get there. I'm not sitting in the plane with her."
You could use his energy to lock on to the island. That would get you safely to the place without having to worry about ending up slicing through someone's arm or whatever when you materialized. Gohan didn't seem to think that was such a good thing however and neither did Chichi. She started to poke you in the chest as though it was somehow the most intimidating thing in the world.
"Now see here!"
"Back. Up."
She didn't get it. Thankfully Gohan did. He actually moved between you and Chichi and started pushing his mother away from you. At that point you didn't really care about the fact that Gohan really wanted you to get along with his friends and family. You couldn't take his mother's insane intensity. Especially after she called you a tramp. She didn't know you; she didn't know anything about you except your name and your species. Gohan hadn't really gotten to tell her anything else about you. And as far as you were concerned she was the tramp. Unfortunately you were just too nice to tell her.
