Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty-one
The weather was actually very nice. Though that wasn't too surprising seeing as it was May and that was a month known for a good balance. It wasn't too hot but there was plenty of sun. On top of that there was even a nice breeze that kept fluttering through. You stood underneath a tree in the main competition area though it seemed you were far from idle. Mentally at least. Physically you were about as still as a rock.
The green man standing there...it sort of looked like Kami. In a way. But he was much taller and obviously much younger. Not to mention his body was much broader. It was just that he shared the same green skin and large pointed ears as Kami. And his energy felt similar to the prior guardians. In fact, it almost felt like it was a part of it.
"Sorry, I have a question and it's going to sound rude."
He looked down at you with a sharp expression. He was exceedingly tall; more than two feet taller than you were. He felt so tall that he almost made you feel like a child.
"Are you Kami's kid?" you asked.
"No," he answered shortly.
"You just feel like him; that's why I asked," you muttered to yourself.
He seemed to make a contemplative noise as he stared down at you. "We fused years ago."
...fused. Okay. You really had no idea how that worked but you supposed it was a thing. Was that something that the green people did? You tried to remember what your adopted mother had called the prior guardian of the Earth but you didn't fare so well. The closest you could think of was Naked but that didn't seem like a real thing. As you thought about the short answer and many questions that the large green man had given you, you started to walk away. You stopped when you heard him speak once more.
"Goku is coming back today. Are you going to make him remember?"
The question startled you. So you turned to look around to stare at him. As far as you knew the only people who knew about the wish had been Kami, Mr. Popo, your parents, yourself Gohan, Trunks, Bulma and maybe Vegeta by this point. Though from how focused the last saiyan was on his room you weren't sure if he was really in those ranks. Maybe the fusion had something to do with it?
"You know about that?" you settled on asking.
The large man nodded. "Yes."
"How?" you asked, feeling a hint of bitterness creep into your heart.
"I have all of Kami's memories."
"...can I smack you and hurt him?"
"That's not how that works. He is gone."
Good - that was the bitter part of you talking. It was his wish that lead to all the complications that you faced now. You had asked him to help Goku if the worst should happen. You hadn't asked him to erase you from Goku's memories. That lead him into getting married to a woman you disliked, though admittedly you might have been a little bias before even meeting her. Not to mention the fact that he had died as a result. There were so many factors in that, actually, that you were sure it couldn't be all pinned on the fact that he didn't remember you. But it sure felt good to try and shift all the blame. Though you were still pissed at Goku it had been wavering like a flickering light; the massive amount of anger you had at Kami's wish was not likely to be distinguished anytime soon.
"Kami was a flawed man," the not-Kami said as he lowered his arms. "But his wish resulted in the salvation of the Earth. Without Gohan, Goku's brother would have enslaved the world."
Your lips pressed tightly together. You couldn't dispute the fact that Gohan was awesome, that was simple logic. It was just that you weren't exactly wanting to speak to logic. Logic needed to go kiss it's own ass. Though as you felt the other Z fighters drawing near you tried to calm down. You didn't want them to think that you were pissy by nature. Even though it really was all you could currently feel right now.
"I still want to smack Kami."
"Hm," the green tall man acknowledged with a slight understanding nod.
You heard Goten's voice call out, "Look! It's Mr. Piccolo."
And as Gohan walked over towards where you and Piccolo were, you looked back up to the jolly green giant. "Like demon king Piccolo?"
"My father," Piccolo answered shortly.
Gohan stopped a few feet before where you and Piccolo were, just the respectable distance to form a trifecta. He was in his saiyaman costume. Only instead of the helmet he had on a white bandana and oversized sunglasses. It was better, marginally, than the helmet. But still you couldn't help but feel like that green toga had to go. Or at the very least you wished it wasn't green. It was such a bright contrast against the black undersuit. Not to mention it clashed with the red cape. The cap was kind of cool though. Red was his color a whole lot more than lime green.
"Hey guys!" Gohan said with a smile. "Have you seen my dad anywhere?"
You shook your head, keeping quiet. Piccolo, however, gave him a verbal answer to his question.
"Not yet. But he'll be here," there was a short pause in what the tall man said and what he brought up next. "That outfit. You're really going to fight in that?"
Hah, score one for the big guy. Even though you weren't too sure about his fashion sense either with that big shoulder cape thing and turban of his, Piccolo at least seemed to be able to spot that Gohan looked completely out of place. The outfit really looked like something out of a young child's cartoon. Something flashy and mismatched that was meant to keep a kid's attention.
Maybe you could throw red paint on the green toga. Or just steal it. He would look a lot better just walking in the under layer. Hmm...choices choice...then again what he wore was up to him and he did seem really happy in it. Something else distracted you from the point of conversation as you looked around Gohan towards said distraction.
"He's here," you spoke quietly the moment that Goku started to materialize.
You didn't see his face straight on but even from the side view you could tell that he'd matured. His face was stronger, less baby like. And he was maybe a few inches taller as well. His arms were thicker as was the rest of his body. Not from fat or anything like that, you couldn't actually see an area where there would be fat. You could practically see the veins in his arms as it was - though that was probably a bit of an overstatement.
How did someone die and get even more ripped? How? Or was he like that before he died? That might make more sense. The question at that point really became how he maintained that while being dead. It was just a lot of questions that his very re-existence brought up. Not to mention there was a golden halo sitting pretty above his head.
It was hard to breathe.
"Hey! I'm back," Goku called out.
Like that wasn't plain enough.
"Dad, it's you!" Gohan said in excitement.
"I need to go," you whispered.
Gohan's hand, however didn't seem to want to allow that to happen. Even though he hadn't been looking at you he knew exactly what you'd been about to do. He grabbed your hand so that you couldn't leave either by instant transmission or by walking away. Gohan understood that after everything you'd been through that it was probably hard to see your old time friend and know he wouldn't remember you. But he wanted to change that. It made no sense to him that you and his dad couldn't be friends again. He didn't understand why you wouldn't just make him remember you once more; after all, that guilt and pain you talked about coming from failure was bound to fade once his dad saw how strong and healthy you were now. It had all worked out for the best as far as Gohan knew.
"You guys have changed a lot in 7 years," Goku said with a laugh, as though he'd just been off training and not actually dead.
Goku turned towards the tree, giving you a full frontal view. Even though he looked more mature than he did when he was seventeen you could still see the man you knew in his face without trying. His hair was just as messy. His eyes were just as dark and joyful. And the smile on his face was just as infectious. However, seeing the way that the woman you'd been arguing with maybe an hour ago look up at him with such zeel made you feel even worse. Especially with the way that Goten clung to her legs, staring up at the "new" man with a mix between fear and excitement.
You tried to tug on Gohan's hand so that you could get away. Gohan wasn't having that. He pulled you closer causing you to trip right into him. The taller teenager braced you as you caught your balance, looking down and to the side worriedly to make sure that you were okay. He hadn't meant to pull you that hard but oh well. You looked like you were shaking as you stared at his father and that made him frown. If what you said was really true, Gohan didn't understand why you looked so afraid now. You'd poured your heart out a long time ago over the pain of coming back to Earth to find out that your best friend was dead. So seeing him now...Shouldn't you be happy? What had really happened that made you like this?
"Gohan! You're giant!"
Gohan simply looked back to his dad and laughed in joy. The compliment from a figure he'd looked up to all his life surged through his body in a way that you could practically feel as he held onto your wrist.
"Hey, she's new," Goku said as he blinked, looking directly at you.
You were torn between standing right where you were and hiding behind Gohan. Which ended up in sort of a physical compromise as you tried to make yourself shrink into the larger teen's side. It almost worked. Unfortunately it also gave the look that you were cuddling into him which...might not have been untrue. He did promise to run interference after all. And sure you might not be in heat right now but your heart was hammering away in your chest like a hummingbird's wings.
"Did you get married?" Goku asked innocently towards his son as he noticed how close you were.
Gohan's face colored, pretty much taking any color you had left in your own. "Oh no dad! She's just a friend! She's just worried about...meeting you."
"Why? I don't bite!"
...yes he did. But that was something you weren't going to say aloud. Not only would it be beyond embarrassing and inappropriate but it would only make the situation worse. You tried, however, to calm down and slowly move away from Gohan.
"You can let go," you told your friend quietly.
Gohan laughed nervously, the blush still on his face as he slowly released your wrist. You stepped towards his side, eyes down as you tried not to stare at the man that made you so very nervous. He, however, didn't seem to have that same issue.
"Oh wow, a tail!" Goku called out as he stood in his spot, taking a rather impressively large yet friendly stance. "Are you a saiyan?"
You nodded; your tail was a traitor. Damned thing. It was drawing more attention to you. You concentrated on trying to get it to wrap around your waist but the best you could seem to get the expressive appendage to do was lay behind you, still swaying but less ruffled looking. Vegeta seemed to notice your inability to control the wayward body part and grunted. From what he'd heard from his...Bulma, things were about to get dramatic. He really didn't care what happened either way just so long as he got his fight.
"Neat," he said with an innocent smile.
And though it pained you to see the next interaction begin, you were grateful that his attention had been pulled off of you. You let out a deep, shaky breath as Goku initiated a hug with all of his closest friends. Gohan rushed towards his father and that made you smile a little. The boy deserved to be happy - he was such a good person. It was the next part that really started to hurt.
There was a certain friendly tenderness in Goku's voice as he told Chichi that he missed her. It was odd, however, that she wasn't among the group that rushed to hug him. A part of you still just wanted to hold on and not let go but you pushed that back. That would only make matters worse. You took a step back, jaw clenching. You wanted to be mad at him. You wanted to be angry at the whole situation. And you were but...more the later than the former. It would have been easier if you could actually summon the anger to put towards Goku but seeing him made that so damned hard.
"You never answered me," Piccolo's deep timber called out as you and he stayed on the side lines.
"I don't want to ruin Gohan's family," you said, recalling exactly what Piccolo asked about without needing to be reminded any further.
Piccolo stayed quiet though you guessed that was his form of acceptance. You hoped that he was happy with your answer because it was the best one you could give. With Bulma, you'd been so adamant that you didn't want Goku to remember. But seeing him now made that resolve less firm. You missed him so very much.
When Goten ran at Goku only to be lifted up onto his shoulders, you couldn't watch anymore. There was heat in your eyes that wanted to spill forward and gods be damned you were not going to cry in public. It didn't matter how much Gohan wanted you to stay there at that moment you needed to get away so that you could calm down. While it was okay for Goku's other friends to be so visually upset you were betting on the fact that outside of a select few, your tears would seem out of place.
You moved behind a wall and leaned up against it, resting your head on the cool brick and keeping to the shade. There was a tree in front of you as you tried to calm yourself down. That scene out there was too much. You wanted to be angry - that would make this easier. But you couldn't. Not after seeing them so happy. Your fist clenched as you took a deep breath.
"Hey."
The voice made your jaw shift slightly as you ground your teeth together. "Not right now, please, Gohan."
"I think right now is a good time," your friend was quiet but firm. "Why aren't you happy? Dad's back."
"It's complicated," you told him quietly.
"What's so complicated?" He demanded, walking a little closer to you and practically demanding all of your attention.
You squeezed your eyes tight, almost as tight as your fists. "He was my best friend Gohan."
"Yeah, I get that. And I know why you didn't want him to remember until now. What I don't understand why you are hiding over here now. I'm sure it would make him happy to see you alive and healthy."
"...it hurts," you told him honestly.
Six months was a long time to live with someone and still want to lie to them. At least it was for you. You'd never been good at lying. You hated hiding things even if it was necessary. You disliked not just being open and honest. Especially since you knew that Gohan shared pretty much everything with you. From his nightmares to his desires to want to help the world; his past and his hopes for the future. You'd heard little bits of everything from him in six months.
"Huh? Why?" Gohan asked as he looked at you in surprise.
"I...loved him Gohan," you admittedly quietly.
You weren't sure if it was in the past tense, actually, but that was semantics. He was still technically dead even though he seemed to be as alive as you were. From the surprised sort of breath that Gohan took in, you knew that he heard you and started to understand your sentiments.
"Before...everything, I was planning to stay with him. In the mountains," you told him honestly, leaving out the part where that had actually been Goku's idea originally. Not to mention the fact that you'd actually been married before the prior Guardian of Earth. "But now…"
"Oh. Oh wow," Gohan breathed out. "So seeing mom and Goten with him…"
"Hurts like hell," you admitted. "You're awesome, and I know it's not you or your family's fault. But it hurts to see."
"Is that why you don't want him to remember?" Gohan asked quietly.
You nodded, feeling a tear finally slip down. Damn it. The warm liquid wasn't going to stop. You felt Gohan step in rather timidly, nervously. The moment you felt his arms wrap around you, you gave in. You buried your head into his chest and clung to the stupid green toga that he wore, squeezing your eyes closed and hiding your face from the world.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," Gohan whispered.
"It's not your fault," you told him, though the sound was muffled. "It's mine. Stupid emotions."
"Hey now, be nice," Gohan tried to joke. "Your emotions are what make you such a good person. It's better than you not having any and just coming here to destroy the Earth."
You smiled weakly against him as you forced back the tears. You could do this. You could watch and support Gohan in his fights.
"But I think we need to rejoin the others, okay? The registration is probably going to close soon. And I want you to sign up with me."
You pushed away from him, focusing through blurry eyes up to see his face. Despite the fact that he had those big sunglasses on you could imagine that they were looking down at you kindly.
"That wasn't the plan," you told him, trying to keep your voice even and stop the quiver.
"Plans change. That's part of the fun of life. Besides, how am I supposed to stop you from doing things you regret if I'm in the back and you're up in the stands?"
"...I thought you said I shouldn't worry about it lasting more than a day Gohan."
The distraction was good. It was helping you focus. Gohan smiled slightly, the look friendly and soft.
"Yeah well I didn't know about the whole situation then. What if you end up in a seat next to my mom?"
Oh dear god you hoped not. Your eyes widened in a sort of surprised fear.
"See. And this way if you're back with the competitors I can keep an eye on you better."
"But I'm not that good."
Gohan laughed and ruffled your hair. Which went right back to how it was before he did that with little prompting. Oh the actual joys of saiyan genetics. Even your hair texture had changed when you were allowed to be who you were. Apparently your adopted parents had been treating your hair to help you blend in a bit better with humans. That treatment had faded once they put you into the rejuvenation and cryostasis tank.
"You play dirty," you mumbled.
Gohan's smile increased as he slowly took a step back away from you. You missed the warmth.
"I learned from the best."
...Touche.
