Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty-two
"Oh wow, don't I know you from somewhere?"
You looked up towards the man who'd gotten closer. He wore a soft yellow, loose fitting jacket and a white shirt. There really wasn't too much to distinguish him from plenty of guys that you saw on the street. Nothing other than the skewed x scar on his face.
"Yamcha?" you asked surprised.
He looked so much older than you remembered…
Yamcha smiled and nodded, "Yes, that's me. Did we meet at a game or something? I swear I've seen your face before but I just can't place it. Probably taken too many balls to the head."
"No," you told him with a small smile. "Well not in the strictest sense. I met you at a sports' competition. You're probably like the only reason I didn't have to find a job when I got back."
He still seemed confused, though you didn't blame him. He had thought you were as human as he was back in the day; you had too actually. So that meant that he would have expected you to age. Besides you had only really known him over a weekend. He'd just done you and Goku a good turn getting the dragonball and the Zenni.
"It's okay if you don't remember me, I didn't know you for very long. But you have my gratitude for everything."
"Huh? What'd I do?" Yamcha asked as he moved in closer.
His body posture was kind of flirty with the way that he'd targeted in on you. And the look on his face was pretty friendly. You looked up at him and blinked, none the wiser of the one who was watching you from a distance.
"You brought my friend and I the one star dragonball, a lot of Zenni, and some disclosure agreements about uhh...I think...eighteen years ago?" You were uncertain about that last part. You wondered if keeping track of years would have been easier if you had lived through them. Maybe, maybe not. You had no way of knowing now.
Yamcha's eyes widened and then he smiled. "Oh wow. Goku's girlfriend right? Wow...you look good."
"It's in the genes," you told him with a small smile.
It felt nice to get complimented. Sure that was probably a little vein but hey, you were only...okay, wait not human but close enough.
"So did you come here to catch up with old friends or something? How'd the two of you break if off anyways? Goku never told me."
"...he thought I died," you told him quietly. "It's a long story. Maybe I'll tell you next time? Those monks look like they want us all to gather up and Gohan will be disappointed if I duck out now."
"Wait, you're competing?"
"Yep. I'll catch you later and tell you about it."
As you walked away you didn't notice either set of eyes on you. Nor did you hear what Yamcha muttered when he knew you were out of earshot.
"Gohan now huh? Wow, that's got to be awkward as fuck…"

There were so many contestants to sort through that it took almost until noon. Although from what you heard this was different than the tournaments that the other Z fighters had taken a part of. This year there was a machine that measures punching power. Which seemed rather bias to you all things considering. This was a martial arts tournament and the whole thing was started off with deciding the competitors by nothing by punching strength. That didn't take into consideration speed over strength nor technique either.
"This doesn't seem fair...it takes out all the technique," you spoke as you waited in line.
"You're right," Goku's voice said from behind you.
Too close. You hadn't expected him to be a little farther back. But there was something about his energy that was harder to sense and less precise. You could practically feel his breath running down your neck.
"So you're going to fight?"
You nodded your head as you tried to move forward as much as you could. He was far too close. You could practically feel his body heat. Considering the fact that he was still technically dead that seemed like such a strange thing. The worst thing was the fact that when you stepped forward so did he and his step seemed bigger. When you turned around as a nervous habit, so used to looking rather than trusting your other senses even now, all you could really see was orange with a hint of blue. Which made it feel like your heart was in your throat. Your tail fluttered almost submissively behind you as you lowered your head. Even then it was hard to see anything other than the signature gi he wore even way back when.
"How strong are you? Have you been on Earth long?"
His inquisitive mind was still the same. And still focused on fighting during a "first" meeting. You gripped the excess fabric in your clothes as you clenched, reminding yourself that you couldn't act any different than a stranger. To Goku this was the first time you'd actually met him. And you seemed to know his family fairly well - at least one of them. It was no wonder that he was curious about your existence. Especially with his history with other Saiyans. From what Gohan said all other saiyans other than you and his dad that he met either wanted to kidnap him or kill him. So Goku was just playing the protective father in a way. You couldn't blame him. But it didn't make it any easier.
Gohan stepped forward slightly, putting his hand on his father's shoulders. "Dad, stop. You're making her nervous."
Goku turned side face to look at his son. You flashed a thankful smile at the taller teenager and turned back around, trying to mind your own business. You didn't see that Goku saw the exchange nor the small frown that he got even when turning his full attention to Gohan. You did, however, hear the exchange. It was hard not to with them so close.
"Why would I be making her nervous? I'm just talking to her."
"You're too close Dad, anyone would get nervous with you standing over them like that."
The older of the two made a thoughtful sound as he turned turned back around. It wasn't much room but there was more. You didn't feel him literally breathing down your neck at least.
After witnessing Hercule's score others, everyone who was actually much stronger, you had tried to do as Gohan pleaded. Keep the score low enough so that the group didn't draw too much attention. It was actually decently easy for you to do. You'd been doing such for a while and you'd lived with less strength than you had now. You knew how to control your strength fairly well. As long as you weren't hungry you did well. Which was how you ended up getting just one point under Mr. Satan's score. It was eye drawing still but low enough that at least it didn't seem too bad, yet high enough to land you into one of the slots. At least you didn't pull a Vegeta and destroy the poor machine.
When it was all said and done you filtered into the competitors area with everyone else. You thoughts were more on everything that was catching up with you more than the fight head. Goku and Yamcha all in one day. Not to mention the fact that you'd broken down a little in front of Gohan. Plus the whole situation with Chichi. Today was just not your day.
You heard your name being called out and when you turned to see who it was this time, Videl was making her way towards you. You smiled and waved slightly as she and Gohan got closer. They hadn't gotten their chance at the punching bag yet but if they didn't make it into the qualifiers you were going to call bullshit.
"I didn't know you were competing."
"Neither did I till after I got here," you told her honestly, glaring (halfheartedly) up into the disguised Gohan. "We can both thank our mutual friend for that."
She watched your gaze shift and quickly put the clues together. "Wait, so you know?"
You nodded and Gohan, in his Saiyaman disguise, laughed nervously. "It's why the whole confusion with Angela at school was started. He thought she saw...something much different than what she's been telling people she saw. She was blackmailing our friend and I didn't think that was right. So I went to help."
"You've known the whole time?" Videl prompted.
"...most of the time, yeah," you answered honestly.
Videl turned a slightly angry eye towards him. "I thought it was supposed to be a secret."
You mouthed the word "sorry" to Gohan as he tried to defend his position on the matter. You hadn't meant to get him into trouble with Videl. Soon enough the two of them placed into the qualifiers and you walked with them to the arena to watch Goten and Trunks' fight. When you got there, Goku greeted you, his son, and Videl.
You moved over to Gohan's other side with Videl on the other. Goku lingered near the front on your other side, cheering on his son. You watched him with smile on your face. It felt good to see how proud he was of the mini-him. You almost laughed when Goten blasted off the Kamehameha, taking off a chunk of the roof.
The match soon turned to an air match once again. Trunks grabbed a hold of Goten in the air. Goten struggled, his arms pulled behind him at what had to be painful angles considering that he was struggling to move forward. Soon enough, Trunks had tossed Goten to the ground. Before the younger halfling had time to correct himself, Trunks caught up to him and drove him into the ground. Without actually landing outside of the ring himself, Trunks flipped back into the stadium to claim victory.
"Hmm, I wonder if there's any good food," you mused.
You hadn't eaten breakfast after all.
"Oh yeah, I'm with you on that one. How about it guys? Want to go find something to eat?" Goku asked with a smile. Most of them agreed. He looked down towards you and spoke up again. "Come on, I'll show you where they have the best food. The concession food is no good. Especially the nachos. I tried those once - no thanks."
That was pretty much how you were corralled off, leaving Gohan behind. Videl called out something about staying to see the match between Trunks and her father and no one was very interested in that. Gohan stopped from walking off with the rest of the group though, and you looked back at him worriedly. He made up some sort of excuse as to why everyone else was walking away and loudly claimed that he was excited to see Trunks face off against Mr. Satan. You were pretty sure at this point that Gohan was just playing along to spare Videl's ego. Which was actually really nice of him. A bit naive but nice. You could appreciate that.
______________________________
Oh the food was actually really good. Goku had been right about that. You sat across the table from him, humming and smiling happily as you piled it down. While you didn't eat as much as the guys, you helped to stack up your own fair share of plates. Though you really didn't eat any of the noodles or the rice they had out. You stuck to the meat and vegetables. It was so yummy.
"Aw, man, you guys started without me," Gohan said in an almost playful tone as he walked through the door, Videl right behind him.
"Sure did!" Goku said between massive bites. "Pull up a chair, we ordered for you."
As Gohan did as instructed, you reached across for the last pork pun. Your arms were a little too short to reach. And it seemed like you were a bit too slow. Goku grabbed the last pork bun but when he saw that you were moving back towards your seat with a small frown, he tossed the bun your way as softly as he could. You caught it in surprise and thanked him. You weren't the one that was surprised the most, though. Gohan looked at the displace with complete disbelief. His father had never done anything like that for as long as Gohan had known him. Usually when food was put in front of his face he was too preoccupied to notice when someone else wanted something that he had just grabbed. Unless they literally tried to take it from him and that never ended well. A pit of jealousy welled up inside of the half saiyan but he wasn't exactly sure why. His disbelief only grew when he saw it happen again and again throughout the meal. And considering the fact that Gohan was stuffing his face when it happened and still noticed that, that was saying something.
"Man, it never gets old watching you saiyans pack it away."
You looked up and smiled a toothy grin at Krillin. You might not know him personally but he was amusing. And you knew of him from all the stories that Goku had once told you. Not that you could say any of that but it did help to endear the short man to you.
"Saiyans? I've heard that before...Gohan didn't your brother say something about saiyans being aliens?"
Gohan stopped in mid slurp. The noodles slipped out of his mouth and back into his bowl. "Good going Krillin!"
Because somehow that seemed less suspicious than just answering Videl's question. As Krillin made his apologies you tried to answer without freaking the girl out. There must have been a reason that Gohan was trying to keep her in the dark.
"It's a near extinct group with some interesting dominant genetics," you told her as you took a bite of deliciously spicy meat. "Makes us really hungry all the time because our metabolism is through the roof. And that helps with ki production; it's why we can produce a lot of it."
You were pretty sure nothing you said was wrong. From what you could tell that seemed to be the case with every saiyan, half or otherwise, that you met. Not to mention your own experience. Unlike humans you never seemed to get bogged down after you ate. While you did like to rest just out of habit after you guessed you'd never really gotten that slow down feeling people talked about. Though you did end up looking towards Vegeta to see if he was going to contradict you but he seemed more preoccupied with taking the last rib from Goku's plate than Videl's questions.
"Oh," Videl answered. "And you're part of it too?"
"Yep," you answered.
Gohan almost seemed relieved. He was a little panicked still but nowhere near as he'd been when Krillin opened his mouth. Seriously though - why was he keeping that a secret from Videl? He'd taught her to fly didn't he? You tried racking your brain to remember if he'd mentioned a reason (other than the one you just assumed about her ego) when you spent the six months with him. But you got nothing. Then again you were really more interested in the stuffed artichokes that they just brought out.
"How many are there?" She asked next.
You shrugged. "Don't know. The place we're all from is kind of gone. Got caught up in a...war type thing a while ago. Like, more than thirty-five years ago. Not exactly sure but yeah, it was a while ago. So any survivors or families are kind of spread out all over the place."
She could take that as spread out over the planet even though you meant the universe. You felt bad for misleading her but...well, maybe Gohan would actually come clean and tell her the truth soon. It should be much easier now since the conversation had been opened up and she got some details. Hopefully. Gohan had calmed down at least and mouthed "thank you". You smiled at him before grabbing the next thing that smelled so good.
At the end of the meal it was kind of like a rush. There hadn't been much time until the adult matches were supposed to be decided. As the rest of them made their way out you felt Gohan catch your hand. You stopped and looked at him but then again so did Videl.
"Go on Videl, I'll catch up. I just wanted to talk to her about something," Gohan said with a smile.
"And you can't do it in the group?" Videl deadpanned. "What kind of a conversation is it Gohan?"
Huh, that sounded like she was trying to make it seem really personally.
"You're being nosy," you told her honestly.
She seemed to get a little angry over that. You might have guessed that she would have that reaction but that didn't stop you from being honest anyways. Gohan got a bit flighty as Videl clenched her fists and stormed away, well...not stormed per say but she did seem upset. Which got quite a few eyes turned back towards where you and Gohan lingered behind. Including that of his father. Goku's eyes lingered much longer than the rest of the group as Gohan tried to sooth over those who were interested enough to pause. You shifted in your spot as you waited for Gohan to calm down and feel comfortable enough to say what he was going to say.
Once everyone was reasonably out of earshot (except for Piccolo but Gohan reasoned you didn't have to know that since it wasn't important), he turned towards you. "Thank you."
"What for?"
"For coming up with that explanation for Videl," he elaborated. "I'm just not ready to have her know yet you know? This year is the first year that I've gotten to be normal. Or close to it. I don't want her to look at me and think I'm a freak or a monster."
"If she looks at you that way and makes you feel bad, I'll kick her ass," you told him with a smile, squeezing the hand that he still had a hold of.
"Please don't," he mumbled out embarrassed.
Though it needed to be said because for all he knew you meant it. And you might have actually. Gohan didn't deserve for anyone to look at him like he was a monster. If anything they should look at him like he was their savior made flesh. Or a god. At the very least he should have been seen like the hero he went around as when he took on the guise of Saiyaman.
"If you say so. But I'm serious, she doesn't deserve to look at you like you're anything less...or anything to be afraid of. You shouldn't have to hide anything about yourself Gohan. You're awesome. You're strong and brave. You're sweet and thoughtful. So what if your dad is from another planet? If she can't see past that to see how down right amazing you are, then that's her problem. If anything that makes you better than anyone else here, not less."
He smiled timidly. On a spur of a moment decision you hovered up to kiss his cheek, patting him on the head.
"Seriously, you don't always have to be so humble. Sometimes you just gotta let it shine."
You really had no idea how your words and actions affected him in that very moment. You hoped, of course, they made an impact. You just didn't know how big of one they made as you turned to walk away, leading him out by the hand.
