Deserving
“Well?” Vegeta said quietly, finally breaking the silence in their dimly lit bedroom. “What do you want from me now?”
Goku flinched at the toneless voice. “I’m not here to keep taking from you. I’m here to give you something,” he said nervously, gently placing the two boxes on the bed.
Vegeta eyed them dubiously. As he did so he realized in shock that he could feel Goku’s mind again. The uncontrolled rage that had forced him out was no longer battering at him.
It was enough to move him to the boxes. He pulled the lid off the smaller of the two and his breath caught to find a modified version of his father’s clothing from another life.
He remembered when Bulma had made him sketch it out. He had surprised them both with his efforts, he seemed to have some untapped artistic skill.
And the details here showed it. She had obviously taken his tastes into account; it was basically his much-loved blue uniform and armor, now sleeveless. Two round, multi-faceted pale green jewels just forward of his shoulders now held the flowing red robe in place on his armor. He almost touched one of the jewels, wondering where she had found stones the same shade as a Super Saiyan’s eyes. And the royal crest would rest over his heart. With a shaking hand he dropped the regalia back into the box and tried to slam the lid back down on it, but Goku caught both his hands in his own, stopping the action.
“You’ve never failed your people, Vegeta. Never.”
Pain flashed over into anger, if only for a few moments before Vegeta sighed wearily, remembering all the times Goku had spurned his Saiyan heritage even though it was the source of his strength, the immense power he’d always wielded so brashly, so easily. “You have no right to give me absolution, Kakarot. You’re an Earthling, remember?” he asked bitterly.
It took Goku a moment to focus on Vegeta’s words; it was just so strange to be so close and not feel Vegeta’s tail seeking him out for contact. It remained tightly coiled around Vegeta’s body, leaving Goku painfully bereft.
He shook his head, making himself focus. “I don’t know, maybe I do still see myself as an Earthling but I still shouldn’t reject our heritage the way I did in the past. So what if I didn’t agree with how the Saiyan race did things? You’re Saiyan and I love you. Our children are Saiyan, and they wouldn’t exist without all the pain you put yourself through to get them here. Look at everything you’ve done to keep the Saiyan race alive and all of us safe, isn’t that what a real king would do?”
Goku could tell Vegeta was still unconvinced but he wasn’t fighting him anymore. He pulled Vegeta’s unresisting hands to the second box and let them go. Vegeta relented, lifting the lid on the second box to find an almost identical copy of the first uniform. This one was larger and had no hole for a tail. “Is this…”
“Yeah. That one’s for me.”
“Don’t fuck with me,” Vegeta growled, dropping it back into the box and knocking them both angrily off the bed. “Making these grand gestures is meaningless when you know I won’t call your bluff. We both know you want no part of the role this binds you to.”
Goku felt it easily, and acknowledged the pain his rejections had caused. “I’m not bluffing. For me you’ve pushed or knocked down pretty much every boundary you had, sometimes just to make me smile. The least I can do - for you and for our family - is put on something nice and be serious for a while. I can do this. I want to and I will do this. Whatever you need me to do, I’ll do it. We’re only strong when we’re together, I know what that means now.”
“Kakarot…” Vegeta whispered, beginning to believe that Goku was serious. “You’ll go with me then?” He didn’t know what to say; this wasn’t anything he’d expected.
“I will. You shouldn’t be doing this alone. And… about the way I’ve been dealing… well, haven’t been dealing with Gohan and us. The things I’ve been saying and doing to you-”
“I don’t want to talk about this Kakarot,” Vegeta growled, pulling away again.
“Then just listen to me. I’ve been terrible to you. You were letting Gohan in again for me, so I didn’t have to choose between my mate and my child. But the closer you two got, I… I won’t make that mistake again. I talked to him - well, he kinda made me talk to him. But we talked, for hours. You were right; all those horrible things I was feeling are… fading. When I look at him now I just see my son.”
Vegeta moved away, went back to where he was when Goku had returned. It hurt to be so near Goku physically with their minds so separated. Whis’ enforced calm was already beginning to dissipate, and he knew he couldn’t think about Goku’s actions without the pain overwhelming him. “You never answered my question,” he sighed wearily. “What do you want from me now?”
“I… well, I…” Goku hesitated, somehow afraid to give voice to the only thing he so badly desired for fear of being refused. “I know what I don’t want. We can stay like this, connected but not touching in our minds as long as Gohan or Whis is helping you. But I… I don’t want that, not at all.”
“Do you… do you remember anything from those blackouts you were having?”
“Not really,” Goku answered sadly. “But I know that trusting me to take care of you was huge for you and I just stopped doing it. And I think I know… what I must have done to you.” Sadly Goku caught a piece of Vegeta’s echoing, unspoken and rote response to himself, confirming Gohan’s worst conclusions. “I know what I told you, but this isn’t at all what I meant. Just because you got off doesn’t mean you wanted what I was doing to you.”
“It’s fine,” Vegeta said harshly. “Tricking you into all this in the first place was bad enough. I should have figured out what Gohan would do. I should have known, should have been more careful. You have every right to be angry with me for-”
“Stop, that’s all wrong! You didn’t deserve to be punished and certainly not like that! Not for anything you've done between us, not for trusting a friend and not for misreading vague warnings from thousands of years-old instincts! You could not have known what Gohan was going to do to you, Vegeta! If nothing else, please believe that!”
Vegeta only growled, wrapping his arms around his chest in growing distress. He didn’t know what to believe; nothing made sense. He wanted Goku back with him, wanted him to go away… it all hurt too fucking much.
Goku watched him withdrawing, agonizing over the gulf between them that seemed to be widening by the minute. ‘This isn’t working,’ he thought frantically, fighting the despair that came coupled with the realization. He didn’t want to admit defeat if even for a night, didn’t want to hand Vegeta back over to Whis… Suddenly he remembered something Vegeta had done once, something that had spoken to both of them more deeply than words. ‘It could work again,’ Goku thought hopefully. Something in him responded, urging him on.
Since Vegeta was so reluctant to look him in the eye Goku crossed the distance between them. He knelt in front of Vegeta before crossing his arms tightly behind his back. He waited for Vegeta to look down at him before trying to say things the same way Vegeta had. “It all went wrong because I shut you out when you were just trying to help me. I did and said a lot of shitty, awful things. I acknowledge that you are stronger than I’ve ever been and I wronged you- no, that’s not it… oh, I have gone against you, and only a king is exempt from discipline. I yield.”
The disbelief in Vegeta’s eyes slowly changed into understanding.
Slowly, almost against his will Vegeta’s fingers touched his head and Goku swallowed hard. They both knew that Goku still had the power to give Vegeta orders that he had to follow. And they both knew what Vegeta could do to him without any such restriction. ‘Whatever he does to me, it’s worth it,’ Goku thought. ‘It’s all for nothing if we’re not together.’
“Whis helped me calm my mind but I’m not… whole. This won’t be pleasant.”
Goku took a steadying breath before answering quietly, “Whatever you need from me, take it. I’m through making you wait for me.”
The searching touch of Vegeta’s mind was as searingly painful as his fingers were soft. Goku might have screamed, might have cried out had the pain in his head not stolen his very breath away. But he was steadfast, didn’t pull away or tell Vegeta to stop. Instead he poured all of his being into two sentences, six words of absolute truth that he hoped and prayed Vegeta could hear.
I’m so sorry. I love you.
If Vegeta heard him, it only aroused his anger. “You shut me out,” he growled. “Stuck your fingers in your godsdamned ears and shouted ‘la, la, la’ at the top of your lungs to avoid hearing my voice, and we both know it’s not the first time you’ve done it. Is that what your ‘love’ is? Am I nothing more than the Harpy was to you? Something to feed you and fuck you and ignore when it suits you?!”
“You’re everything to me, Vegeta. Everything,” Goku cried. “I made the same stupid, stupid mistake I always make and I will never do it again!”
“That bullshit’s not good enough, Kakarot! You saw him raping me, you felt him trying to take my mind apart. But I’m the one he did it to! Hell, forgiveness is in you, not me and I still managed it after a fashion! Why, Kakarot?! If I’m ‘everything’ to you why couldn’t you just listen to me, suck it up and find in you to mend your family?! You owe me an explanation! Show Me NOW!”
That searing touch grew impossibly hotter and Goku drew in a sharp, ragged breath. Vegeta’s demand dragged the memories out of him with tendrils of iron and the image flooded them both so hard and fast it was shocking.
Vegeta had never seen it, what he looked like after he’d given birth to the girls. He was no stranger to battle, but…
There was just... so much blood. No battle, no wounds, just blood. The ground beneath his pale body was muddy with it. Had he been human he would have been dead before Goku even arrived.
Goku had taken that frail, dying body in his arms and never in a life filled with impossible, high-stakes battles had he felt such utter terror. He began running at full speed as soon as his feet had touched the Lookout courtyard and as he ran, screaming at the top of his lungs for Dende he prayed to anyone, anything that was listening. ‘Don’t take him. Don’t take him. I just found him, don’t take him. Please, don’t take him away from me because I was too blind to see what I had!’
The words changed but that awful screaming continued until Piccolo and Kami wrestled him down and dragged him away so Dende could concentrate on healing a body whose soul no longer had an interest in living.
The images ended abruptly, slamming he and Goku back into their bodies. With a pained sob Goku’s arms flew around Vegeta’s waist. That warmth and scent so close only increased his desperation to be one with his mind again. He couldn’t think over the terror Vegeta had pulled out of him and words just poured forth unchecked. “I waited for you to come to me again, I missed you so much every single day and when you came to me again I was going to tell you I loved you and tell you I left Chi-Chi and ask you to stay with me but you didn’t come because of Gohan… he did that to you, he did, he almost killed you and what if the Dragon Balls couldn’t bring you back this time and the girls should have been mine but they weren’t because of him and I didn’t stop him because I was so stupid… and he kept hurting you, you were calling me and I… I-”
The sight of his normally carefree mate descending into hysteria at the thought of losing him for good was gut-wrenching. ‘He’s fucking shaking… No wonder he couldn’t think about Gohan without losing it.’ “Gently, calm yourself. You were coming for me when Piccolo called you to come help, weren’t you? It’s in the past. I’m here now. I’m here.” At their current low level of awareness, all Vegeta could do was use his hands and voice to soothe. As much as he wanted to push his way into Goku’s mind and calm the storm, he couldn’t bring himself to do it even now. Goku had been the one to push him away, and he wouldn’t do more until he knew his touch wouldn’t be an unwanted violation.
Instead of calming down Goku only became more frantic, clutching him even tighter. “This isn’t enough, I can’t feel you! I know I don’t deserve it but I need to hear your voice, please, just give me that much-”
//Stop it you idiot. When I mean to punish you I’ll use my fists. You never did tell me. What do you want from me now?//
In answer Goku threw his mind as open as he knew how, calling with all his soul. Please, come back!
Vegeta eagerly took the invitation, pushing past surface thought and delving as deeply as was his due, filling all those places in Goku’s mind where he just fit… It was a homecoming too long delayed. Goku’s erratic sobs hitched on a sharp breath in and then stopped altogether. A long moan escaped him as his body and mind relaxed at once around all the parts of himself he’d been missing.
Brutal clarity returned to him along with Vegeta’s strong presence, and in that harsh logic he saw all the disastrous decisions he’d been making, all the times he’d chosen the wrong path because he’d pushed his mate’s wiser insights away.
Vegeta had lost so much weight that the slight roundness to his belly was evident, and Goku leaned forward to press his cheek against it through the thick cotton shirt. He was almost steady again, almost sure of both their needs once more. But neither of them would be whole again until the balance between them was restored.
He asked as gently as he could, wordlessly if his own presence was allowed… or even wanted after what he’d done.
Somewhere deep within his very cells Goku knew that as ill-treated as he’d been as a mate Vegeta shouldn’t have given him as much as he had, should have shoved him away, knocked him down to the ground and demanded that he prove himself worthy once more of the trust that had been placed in him. It was his right.
To his utter relief and gratitude he felt Vegeta’s fingers stroke through his hair and down the back of his neck and it was so comforting Goku was afraid he would begin crying anew.
//I never wanted you gone in the first place. Distance between us will never be my choice even when… no, especially when we’re at odds.//
Goku didn’t need any more prompting. He surged forward, reaching for a mind that was as open to him as the day he’d begun pushing it away.
The relief of Goku’s bright presence was overwhelming, finally bringing quiet to the storms inside him as it always did. It soothed away the pain and the heartache, the guilt and the anxieties that had been eating him alive over the past week. He finally began to feel whole again.
Caught up in the rapture of peace, Vegeta greedily agreed when Goku hesitantly pushed, wordlessly asking for his trust. He was so absorbed in the feel of Goku’s mind filling his own once more that those deft fingers pulling at his loose sweatpants were an afterthought, until wet heat descended on his cock, somehow already erect and ready for attention. He shuddered in shock and enjoyment, fingers still buried in the dark hair that quickly began bobbing up and down in his lap.
Goku’s arms returned to his waist, holding him so tightly he couldn’t move his hips. The part of him that wanted to panic was quieted by the part of his mate that only wanted to give him pleasure, nothing more. Gods, they had both missed that easy rapport, that swift understanding and Vegeta gasped, body already coiling in anticipation. It had been too long since this kind of attention hadn’t come bundled with pain and they both knew he wouldn’t last long. He tried to control it, to slow himself down but Goku ended his efforts by flooding him with his own need, boosting his pleasure beyond bearing. He whimpered helplessly, exploding into Goku’s eager mouth after only a few strokes of that expert mouth.
Goku suckled slowly softening flesh, reaching up underneath his shirt to caress what skin he could when he felt Vegeta fall backward on the bed. He didn’t stop until he felt Vegeta’s breathing returning to normal. Despite the rest he’d gotten thanks to Whis Goku could feel once more that Vegeta’s body was still exhausted. But the tension had left his body for the moment - at least until Goku began tugging at his pants to get them off. Vegeta came all awake at that, shooting up and backing up quickly.
The wariness and dismay in his eyes were painful blows to Goku, even though he forced those feelings quickly away on realizing Goku was just trying to make him more comfortable; he usually hated sleeping in pants. “You surprised me,” Vegeta murmured, closing his eyes briefly.
My Vegeta… “What did I do to you?” Goku asked softly.
“Some shit went wrong, shit neither one of us understood. What we’re doing hasn’t been done in thousands of years, for us or for Cabba’s people. We were bound to fuck it up.”
It wasn’t an answer to his question, but Goku knew it was as close as Vegeta could get right now. “I don’t even remember the last time I kissed you.”
A slight tinge of embarrassment touched Vegeta’s cheeks. “Yes you do.”
“But the last time I can remember was almost a week ago- Oh, Vegeta. I’m sorry.” It was criminal, Goku thought, that those lips shouldn’t be kissed every hour of every day. “I have a lot of catching up to do,” he said, leaning forward.
Before they could touch Vegeta suddenly blurted out, “I’m tired,” without really knowing why.
“Vegeta…?” Goku frowned. “I hurt you.”
//Kakarot-//
“No, you have to hear this. I may not remember what I did but I have these… horrible dreams, and if even a little bit of those dreams was real, I… You were supposed to be safe with me and I did things to you that neither one of us ever believed I could do. And I know why you only tried to make me stop when you had no other choice. It would have destroyed you if I didn’t listen… It’s okay,” he soothed when he felt Vegeta’s anxiety spike. “I just wanted you to know that… I know what I did, and I’m more sorry than I can say.”
Goku only smiled, knowing and a little sad before closing the distance and touching Vegeta’s cheek, slow and gentle. It’s okay. I may not remember exactly what I did to you and I know you won’t show me anytime soon, but… I know. I’m me again, your idiot Kakarot who loves you more than anything. I can hear you and feel you again, and I won’t do anything you’re not ready for, I promise.
As much as he hated how much Goku’s words relieved him Vegeta couldn’t deny he’d needed to hear that. This time when Goku reached for that kiss he didn’t move away. His eyes drifted shut at the first touch of those warm lips pressed to his own, Goku moaned when Vegeta’s lips parted to allow him entry and they lightly teased one another into a kiss that slowly eased the sudden strain between them.
When Vegeta finally pulled away Goku sighed happily. “I wish we could do that all night. And tomorrow too. And maybe the next day-”
“Well tough,” Vegeta huffed, a hint of a smile finally touching his lips. “You haven’t seen Húlu in over a week and she’s pissed.”
“Oh no,” Goku groaned. “I hate it when she’s angry with me!”
“Yeah, like she stays angry for more than a minute with you. One hug and you’re back in her good graces. Tomorrow’s the usual rest day for their village, just bring her here and spend some time with her and Shēng for a few hours.”
“Okay. I need to get Gohan here too. He’s terrified you’re gonna be pissed at him for getting involved after you told him not to. …You’re not, right?”
“Of course I am,” Vegeta snapped. “I told him to keep his fat trap shut.”
“But Vegeta! If he hadn’t done anything there’s no telling how bad things between us would have gotten! He was only trying to help us both-”
“Calm down, idiot,” Vegeta chuckled, pleased beyond measure to hear Goku defending his son. “I’m only going to yell at him, I can’t not. He spared us both harm by interfering. He only did what he had to do, what he should have done.”
Goku relaxed again, but he was still puzzled. “I thought his job was to agree with you and do whatever you said no matter what.”
“That’s stupid. In the absence of a consort, who else could be counted on to tell the king when he was just plain wrong if not his most trusted servant? Blind loyalty is for the weak, and our people are far from weak.”
“But… I fought him tonight. I know what you’re doing; you’re giving him way more power than even he realizes right now. You never would have done that if you didn’t trust him. So why didn’t you let him help you? He told me that he offered when things were really bad.”
Vegeta shook his head, tail twisting in agitation. “I couldn’t. He’s so much like you I would have kept reaching for more, and it would never have been enough because he’s not you. Both of you… deserve better than that.”
“Even if you’d had sex with him I couldn’t complain,” Goku said flatly, cutting to the chase. “You trusted me to handle your emotions, to look after you and the babies and I let you down. And after what I put you through… I’d have no right to be angry. It’s a miracle you survived with your mind in one piece, Vegeta.”
Vegeta frowned, confused. As possessive as Goku had a tendency to be with him - especially where his son was concerned - that wasn’t something Vegeta had expected to hear. He said as much.
“It’s not like I would have been happy about it, but as long as I was… you know, me again I wouldn’t have been pissed off at anyone but myself. I’d rather have found you at peace with him than suffering all alone. I’m just glad Whis had the good sense to butt in when he did.”
Vegeta fell silent, the end of his tail flicking back and forth. Goku took the opportunity to push him back onto the pillows, returning his head to Vegeta’s stomach to wait for him to gather his thoughts.
“I guess I’m just used to people here putting up with me because the Savior of Earth expects them to,” Vegeta finally said. “Barely anyone did more than tolerate me.”
“Maybe that was true at first, but it changed. Bulma, Piccolo, Krillin, Whis, others… it’s not a long list, but it’s one hell of a dedicated one, Vegeta. You’ve done a lot for them all over the years. Is it so surprising they’d start to understand you and like you?”
“Yes. It’s fucking surprising,” Vegeta snapped.
“Such great language could only belong to the Prince… no, the King of Dense!” Goku laughed.
“You always wait ‘til I’m pregnant to pull this shit when I’m too weak to kick your ass for you,” Vegeta grumbled. “If you ever pull any of this shit again I’m stomping you through a black hole.”
Vegeta was surprised to feel a wave of suddenly serious and honest agreement. “Please do. And if you’re pregnant get Whis to do it.” Goku pushed himself up to look a bewildered Vegeta in the eye, suddenly anxious to make his point. “None of what I did to you was okay, Vegeta. I know what you’ve been through. I would rather go to hell and stay there than touch you in any way you didn’t want, let alone get violent with you-” Goku felt Vegeta stiffen under him, his heartbeat getting faster and he responded without thinking, soothing him over their bond. He didn’t speak again until Vegeta began to relax once more. “I’m not going to push you to talk about what I did. But know that I would never, ever harm you like that, in any way unless something was horribly wrong with me. Whis and Gohan were right; you won’t be betraying me by telling someone or going to someone else for help, you’d only be helping us both. Please, I need to know you understand.”
“...I don’t understand. It doesn’t make sense, and running to someone else for help makes even less sense to me,” Vegeta said flatly. “But it doesn’t have to right now. I still trust you for some stupid reason. So I’ll… do what you’re asking.”
Goku breathed a sigh of relief, pushing that shirt up and nuzzling back into Vegeta’s stomach again. “I’ll do whatever I have to do to make sure this never happens again, but I’m glad that if I ever go off the rails again you’ll be safe. I just can’t believe that you still… want me.”
Vegeta reached down to feel those soft spikes of hair running through his fingers again. The contentment he felt coming back to him was colored by intense humility.
You went through so much just trying to protect me during all this… And you never stopped reaching for me, not once.
//Not once. And no, it wasn’t just because I need you to silence my demons for me. I still care for you, Kakarot. I never want to be without you and that won’t change no matter how much of a stubborn brat you decide to be.//
They both drifted in contentment for a few minutes, both finally unknotting after a week of confusion and tension. But as comfortable as Goku was resting his head on Vegeta’s stomach as he loved to do, it wasn’t as comfortable as it should have been.
He kissed that too-thin stomach and too-sharp hipbones before pushing himself up off the bed. “I’m going to go get you something to eat, tuck you in and have a long conversation with our kids while you’re asleep. And you might as well get used to that. Until we leave for Universe 6 you’re going to be either eating, sleeping or resting.”
He was ready for the scowl and the anger that hit him as Vegeta shot up off the bed to square off with him. “Screw that! I’m not done with Cabba yet! He needs more training and we only have a few days left!”
“Vegeta, he’s already going to be able to kick the ass of any other fighters they have thanks to you. What else did you want to teach him?”
Vegeta smirked. “How to do it with style.”
“Fine,” Goku agreed with an eyeroll. “I know he’s your student. But we’re in this together, right? So I’ll take over with him. You can stay here and use me to teach him, can’t you?”
Vegeta was stunned into silence for a moment. It was one thing to know he now had Goku’s full cooperation in this, it was another to see it in action. “I… I guess that could work. But I have other shit to do too, Kakarot,” Vegeta grumbled, plopping back down on the bed. “There are a ton of preparations to make, you know.”
“Yeah, I know. We’ll deal with things as they come up, but getting you healthy again is the most important thing. It doesn’t matter how tough you are, our people aren’t going to trust a skinny king.”
Vegeta’s heart skipped a beat. “...Our people?”
“Yeah. Our people,” Goku said shyly. He suddenly felt himself pulled into a devastatingly tender kiss that dazzled him. And for the first time in a long time, he felt Vegeta’s tail coiling around his leg.
When it ended Goku found that his voice was for a moment beyond his reach. What was that for?
//I’ve been waiting a long time to hear you say that.//
They both felt it then, a sense of rightness, of unity going forward, something they had both been missing without knowing it. Goku felt lightheaded with the intensity of it, the feeling that they’d finally fallen in line with something much greater than themselves.
King Vegeta the Second and his Consort Goku. I’ll help you convince them to work with us and both of our peoples will be stronger for it. We’ll do it the way you wanted, Vegeta.
//Together.//
Together.
“...But not right this second, at least not physically,” Goku smiled. “Stay put Vegeta, I mean it!”
Vegeta growled, crossed his arms and sulked and Goku couldn’t help but be a little relieved at the return to his normal antagonism instead of the state of jumpy anxiousness he’d been forced into this past week. “Here,” Goku said, picking up the remote and tossing it beside the angrily thrashing tail. “Watch that awful reality show you like, it’s always on. I’m going to bring you a nice, big meal and you’re going to eat every bit of it. Then you’re going to sleep for as long as you can; you know Pima and Shishi are going to be all over you as soon as they wake up.”
Still grumbling Vegeta switched on the TV as Goku sauntered away, quickly finding a marathon of said awful show. He watched a whining contestant struggle to pour an entire sack of harvested rice in a battered pot of clear water over a fire and chuckled darkly. “They call this ‘surviving?’ They have no fucking clue.”

Next: Good news, bad news. I’m going to take a longer break between chapters, a month I’m guessing, to get more chapters under my belt. But I’ll start uploading Snapshots chapters again (since they take very little time to write) to tide you over, and some of them really do further the overall plot so do keep tuning in on regular update days if you like. And I think I’m finally going to sack up (ovary up?) and post the dark one first so please, please do heed the warnings when it comes. ...And cross your fingers for Universe 6 to show up again. Mama wants moar Saiyans to play with! Lol.
Zeo: The sexual switch-up is definitely in the works; I just need to move the plot along a bit before I get there. It’ll start in snapshots and finish up in the main work, I think. Hopefully it will be worth the wait! And I’ve got another snapshot story idea that gives Whis and Vegeta’s friendship a little more development so I’ll polish it up and get it posted during the hiatus. :)
