Chapter 44
Bulma's knees buckled beneath her and she collapsed on the ground as she watched him leave. She could not believe it; he was actually leaving her! She covered her mouth with her hand as she tried to hold back a sob. She didn't want him to leave. How could he think that there was nothing left for him here? Even if things would never be one hundred percent right between them again, he still had a son to think about. Now he was abandoning both of them.
How could he? She thought again in an odd mix of grief and anger. Sure, she had wanted to leave him and get as far away from him as she possibly could when he'd come for her on Frieza's ship, but that had been her decision. He couldn't make the decision for her now after she had come to know him and realize that everything they had made her think was a complete lie.
Or was it?
She knew he had not been happy about her pregnancy. Maybe this was still an extension of that and he was using this as an excuse to not have to step up and be a father? She knew deep down that wasn't it, but it was what she was going to tell herself in the moment to make herself feel better. No one just up and left her without a valid reason or explanation!
Bulma sighed deeply as another sob burst forth. She knew she was lying to herself. She knew he had every valid reason to leave her. He had given her every opportunity to want to salvage things between them and she had ignored his need for her and accepted what he was willing to give her and then shut him out. This was all her fault; she could not blame him for any of it and she knew it.
After several minutes of wallowing in grief and self-pity, she picked herself up off the ground and headed back for the house. She wasn't sure what she was going to tell everyone, but decided it was better she go back there than sit on the dirt road crying like a lost child.
As she headed back to the house she could not help but keep looking back behind her and off to the sides in hope that maybe he had just been bluffing. As the minutes went by and she did not see any sign of him the worse and worse she began to feel. She even tried to reach out to him through what was left of the bond and got nothing but emptiness and silence back from him.
She could see the house and silently hoped and prayed that maybe he was there. If only to let Kakarott know of his impending departure. She began to jog towards the house hoping that if he was still there that maybe she could catch him just before he left. Just so she could talk to him. And tell him what exactly? She wasn't sure.
Bulma barged into the house disruptively, ignoring the dogs completely and looking around the small kitchen. Her mother and father, Chi-Chi and Kakarott were the only ones there. She looked at Kakarott in panic, "Where's Vegeta? Has he been here?" she asked nearly frantically.
The younger Saiyan shook his head in confusion, "No. The last I saw him was on the ship," he answered. "Why? What's wrong?"
"He's leaving," she sobbed. "He said he was leaving."
"Leaving where?" Kakarott asked with a frown.
"To go back home he said."
"When, now?"
Bulma nodded, unable to speak at this point.
"Why?" he asked, looking suspiciously at her. "What happened?"
Bulma shook her head. "It's all my fault; I said I didn't want to create the bond again. So he said he couldn't stick around."
"Oh, dear." Her mother sighed, walking up to her daughter and hugging her. "I'm sure he didn't mean that; he'll be back."
"When is he leaving?" Kakarott asked, ignoring Bunny all together.
"Now," she answered. Kakarott gave her an uncharacteristically irritated glance and headed out the door. "If you find him, tell him I'm sorry! Please tell him not to leave!"
Kakarott stopped out in the front yard. "I can't sense him. If he's still on this planet, he is concealing his energy. In which case, it means he does not want to be found. I will take a look around, Bulma; but if he doesn't want to be found, the chances of me finding him will be slim to none."
Bulma couldn't help but begin to cry again as Kakarott quickly searched the gravity room. When it turned out Vegeta wasn't in there, he leaped into the air and disappeared into the sky.
"There, there, dear." Her mother said soothingly. "Young men can be so fickle. They say and do things all the time they don't really mean. I'm sure this is nothing more than that and he will be back be tonight to resolve this little misunderstanding."
"No. You don't get it, Mom," she sniffled, pushing her mother away. "It's not that simple. I wasn't thinking; I was being completely selfish and not considering him and his needs and rejected him in the worse way imaginable."
"Well, I told you, dear not to keep putting him off like you were." Her mother shrugged. "He may be a honorable upstanding gentleman, but I am sure even he can take so much before he decides to throw in the towel. It's not like he didn't try. Do you not listen to a word I ever tell you?"
Bulma rolled her eyes and walked out of the kitchen and away from her mother. "Which room is mine?" she asked Chi-Chi.
"Just upstairs to the right." Chi-Chi answered quietly, letting her friend go and watched as the dogs followed her anxiously up the stairs.
About an hour or two later, Chi-Chi knocked on her door and went in to check on her friend. "Bulma? Are you alright?"
"No," she answered, curled up in bed facing away from the door.
Chi-Chi quietly closed the door and crawled into bed with her friend, giving her a hug. "Hi. I'm glad you're home. I was worried about you and missed you."
"I missed you too," Bulma said. "Sorry for all the commotion."
"That's alright. I still don't understand all that happened. Kakarott only filled in bits and pieces here and there."
"He's back?"
"Yea," Chi-Chi nodded. "He couldn't find Vegeta, I'm sorry. He said he would try again in a few hours and look again tomorrow but it's not looking good I'm afraid. The good news is the ship you guys took is still here. Unless he decided to take a different one. Then who knows if he really is still here."
After a long moment of silence, Bulma began to cry again. "This is all my fault, Chi,"
"Well, tell me what happened? You guys always have your little spats, but they never last for more than a few hours. Maybe your mother is right and he'll come back?"
"No," she shook her head. "He meant it. He's leaving. I pushed him too far."
"What happened, Bulma?" Chi-Chi asked her again.
Bulma went into what she knew from what Vegeta had told her about when she'd gone missing. She told her about what Dr. Gero and Frieza had done to her, how she didn't remember her past life with Vegeta and even hated him because of what they'd done to her. She told him about the battle on the ship and how despite her wanting nothing to do with Vegeta, he still had somehow made her getting off the ship and away from Frieza his main priority. She told her about the trip back and what had gone on between them and what had happened just a few hours ago.
Chi-Chi listened quietly and patiently to her friend. Her heart went out to her for everything that had happened and she was silent a few minutes before deciding to weigh in her opinion. "Don't take this the wrong way, Bulma, but you've really screwed up." She said with a heavy sigh. "I get where you're coming from, I do, but you need to let go of whatever it was they did and fix things with Vegeta.
"I don't always get him and I have wondered time and again what it was exactly that drew you to him; he can be rough and arrogant and difficult to be around, but that man loves you. I know he won't say it, but so what? You always told me that what he could not tell you with words, he more than made up for in his actions and what you felt from him through your bond I believe that. B, when you were taken, he was beyond devastated. He blamed himself. And while, I do agree with him, that it was partially his fault for not keeping the bond open so that he would know that you were in trouble, I also know that he would do just about anything for you."
Bulma nodded. "What's your take on the bond?"
Chi-Chi shrugged. "It's different and a bit strange, but I wouldn't want to change it or undo it for the world. It takes your relationship to a whole other level. You didn't mind it before. In fact, I found myself at times jealous that the two of you had formed such a strong bond. Kakarott and I have a pretty good bond, but it pales in comparison to what you two had. B, as your best friend, I am telling you: if you get the chance to undo this and he hasn't actually left, restore it. You won't be sorry."
"What if he doesn't come back?"
"Well, I couldn't blame him," her friend replied with a sigh. "And I can't imagine what he must be feeling now after everything that has happened; he finally got you back safe and sound and now you tease him and lead him on and then tell him no?"
"Chi, it wasn't like that,"
"Bulma, what did you think was going to happen?" Chi-Chi asked her in an annoyed tone. "Did you honestly think he would be just ok with holding hands and making out forever? That he wouldn't eventually expect more from you, more being for you to want to make an effort, a real effort to fix things?"
"No," Bulma admitted. "But I thought he'd be willing to give me more than a month before throwing in the towel."
"Ok, that's one way of looking at it, but look at it from his perspective; you're sharing a bed and making out and willing to sleep with him so why not just fix the bond? You might be able to get your memories back and if not, just start from scratch and improve your current relationship. It's not such a bad thing, really, Bulma." Chi-Chi said. "I get your point of view, a lot of bad stuff has gone down between you two so I can understand your hesitancy in wanting to go there again, but you've been through too much for you to walk away from each other just like that. You need to stop being so stubborn and trust him; and if you can't trust him, then trust me. He's probably a mess right now over this and if I know him, in a very foul mood because he does not like anything to do with having to face feelings and emotions.
"B, I saw what it did to you when he unknowingly blocked you out for several months. You were a mess. Once you guys found each other again and fixed it, everything was fine. You were never happier. He was happy; well, as happy as Vegeta ever lets anyone see, I guess. But I am sure he is a complete mess over this and it's more than likely freaking him out that he cannot control this. You need to find him and fix this before he does something stupid and permanently severs everything between you two. That may even throw you into a mess again for all I know and I don't want to deal with that again, believe me!"
"Thanks, Chi." Bulma said. "I wish you had come along with them,"
"I wasn't allowed."
"I know and trust me, they were right in not letting you come; it was dangerous. I thought the ship was going to blow up at one point. But I wish you had been there on the ship on our journey back. I was so afraid of him at first, you have no idea. I tried to talk to him right after we left Frieza's ship and it didn't go well. Then he ignored me for the first two weeks, which was okay because I needed my space to think things through. Then he came to me and we started working on things and it was all going well until he wanted to fix the bond and I said I didn't want to. Then everything changed. I wish you had been around then to tell me these things. Now, I've just gone and screwed things up."
"Let's just hope not, B." Chi-Chi said, hugging her friend. "Get some rest. I'll get up tomorrow with you and help you go look for him, alright?"
"How are we going to do that, Chi? We can't fly."
"Send Aro out. If he's around, that dog will find him. He adores him."
"Alright. Sounds good, Chi." Bulma agreed. "Where are my parents by the way? I completely forgot about them."
"Well, Kakarott was able to let me know when you were all headed back here that they were both with you guys so Krillin volunteered to let them stay with him at his place until they find their own place."
"That's great. Thank you." Bulma nodded. "I'll have to go thank Krillin tomorrow."
"Actually, I think it'll be really good for him and we've done him a favor." Chi-Chi giggled. "I was there helping to set up their room and the man is clueless about keeping a house and cooking. Your mom will have a field day whipping him into shape." she said and left Bulma alone again in her thoughts.
Bulma thought back on their conversation. Oh, how she wished she'd had Chi-Chi's insight before she had opened her big mouth! She hadn't told her anything she hadn't been told already. But Chi-Chi was always so protective of her. If she thought fixing the bond was a bad idea, then she would have told her. Would she have still listened to her though? She never listened to her to dump Yamcha to the curb time and time again.
She sighed heavily, feeling emotionally and physically exhausted and eventually fell asleep.

The next day, she found herself up early. She decided to walk the dogs and see if she could find Vegeta anywhere.
She took a look inside the gravity room and noticed that it was completely empty. She then headed off down the road, looking around as far as she could in hopes that maybe she would spot him flying somewhere, but still so far no dice.
After over an hour, she headed back home. Chi-Chi was already up and making breakfast.
"Hey," she greeted. "Would you like some breakfast? I'm almost finished."
"No, I'm not hungry, thanks though. I just need coffee."
"You should eat, Bulma," Chi-Chi said in a warning tone. "Trust me,"
"I know, but I just can't. My stomach is in knots."
Chi-Chi shook her head and placed some toast and a warm beverage that looked like coffee in front of her anyway. "Eat something."
"Fine," she rolled her eyes, grabbing her coffee mug and sipping. It did taste like coffee. "How have you been?"
"Alright," Chi-Chi shrugged. "This pregnancy is really taking its toll. I can't wait to just have it already."
"How far along are you now?"
"Almost 8 months," Chi-Chi sighed, rubbing her huge stomach. "But it feels like I've been pregnant forever."
Bulma smiled at her friend. "I know this is a really strange question, but I can't remember how long I've been pregnant for. Do you know how far along I am then?"
"Well, I was about four or five months when Vegeta came back here for you. You got pregnant sometime in there. You knew about it for a few weeks before you were taken and that was two months ago now at least so since I'm just under eight months, that would make you like 4 months then?" Chi-Chi guessed.
Bulma nodded.
"Yea, you're just starting to show too, that's when I started showing was around the four month mark. So you'd better start eating, girl! If your baby is anything like mine, he'll have the same impossible appetite their father's do."
"You look good, though." Bulma commented.
"Thanks!" Chi-Chi grinned.
Bulma ate some of her toast almost mechanically, trying to figure out what she should do next after she ate. She decided on a shower and a change of clothes before setting out to look for Vegeta again.
Three days later...
Vegeta watched as Bulma left the house to walk Aro. He had managed to keep a very low profile these past three days. He had almost been found by Kakarott a few times when he hadn't been paying attention to his surroundings. Thankfully, he had been smarter than the younger Saiyan and had been able to keep himself hidden from him.
Once she was nearly out of sight, he cautiously climbed into her, or their, bedroom window and began going through her clothes. Packing things here and there that he thought he may need for his trip.
He had the misfortune of running into her father last night when he had come by the house to check on her. The old man had been out for a walk, or that's what he had claimed and so he had seen Vegeta and he had had no choice but to speak with the older man.
Flashback
"It is nice to see you, my boy." Dr. Briefs greeted him.
Vegeta sighed heavily and ground his teeth together. Why hadn't he been more careful in making sure he would not be seen? "What do you want? To give me a hard time over my choices?"
"Not at all," Dr. Briefs replied shaking his head and placing his hands in his pockets. "I am actually on your side of the issue at hand."
"What do you mean 'My side'?" Vegeta scoffed.
"I feel for you," Dr. Briefs said simply. "And I feel my daughter has been very unfair to you."
"You are her father and yet you betray her by taking my side?" Vegeta asked, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. "Why?"
"Because even though I do not know you well, even I can see that she is being rather unfair to you." Dr. Briefs replied, standing next to him. The older man looked even older than Vegeta had initially guessed him to be in the dark. "These last few days have been very hard on her."
"Have they now?"
Dr. Briefs nodded. "I am glad you are still here."
"Well, I am leaving tomorrow." Vegeta replied with finality. "I will make a point of speaking with her tomorrow before my departure. She has a choice: She may decide to remain here or she may come with me. It is her call. Should she decide to stay here, I will respect her wishes and leave her alone for good."
"And if she decides to go with you?"
"I will take her someplace safe for her to birth the child. There is no technology on this planet. Kakarott has a backup plan for his mate and it is adequate. Should Bulma decide to remain here, she should be alright, but I would rather take her elsewhere that has advanced technology where she can be properly monitored and cared for."
Briefs nodded. "Alright."
"I was not asking your permission, old man." Vegeta growled. "I am simply notifying you of her whereabouts should she suddenly disappear tomorrow."
"I was not giving you my permission. I was merely acknowledging your decision." Briefs replied. "If it makes you feel any better, I have a good feeling that you've shaken her up good enough that she will be more than willing to go with you."
Vegeta sighed deeply, guilt flowing through him at the thought that he may have put her through more distress than necessary. "We shall see."
"Just bring her back from time to time, please?" Briefs asked him. "That is, if she accepts your offer."
Vegeta nodded. "I will bring her back once she has birthed my heir and then we shall decide whether or not to remain here or return to my home planet." He said. "Should I return there, I have a position available for you in our science department and someone who would be thrilled to work with you. Your daughter's genius absolutely astounded him. You and your mate will be provided for."
"That sounds good, my boy." Briefs nodded. "Thank you for everything you have done for our family."
"Hmmmn." Was all he said as he left the older man for the rest of the evening.

He managed to follow her from a safe distance as she was walking Aro. Finally she stopped where she usually did to toss the ball for the dog.
"I know you're there." She said.
"So you have learned to be somewhat aware of your surroundings." He said, stepping out from behind a tree not too far from where she was standing.
"I thought you'd left." she replied coolly, not turning to look at him; though Aro had run back to greet him.
"I almost did," he said as he walked up to her slowly.
"What changed your mind?"
"I don't know," He answered. "I wanted to speak with you before leaving."
"Alright." She said, as she felt him come up behind her. She shivered at his close proximity and she fought the urge to lean back into him.
"I would like for you to come with me," he said, leaning into her right ear. "I thought if I left you alone for a few days you may consider it. We can leave now; the ship is ready. I am simply waiting for you."
"And where are we going?" she asked. "Back to your home planet?"
"In time, yes." He answered. "I will not bring you there until you have safely birthed our child. However, if you decide to not come with me now, I will head there immediately."
"So where is it you are taking me then?"
"Anywhere," he shrugged. "You used to want me to show you the galaxy. Now with Frieza gone, I would be able to do that. There is still much time; we can find a suitable planet for you to safely birth our child."
She nodded. "What about Chi-Chi though?"
"Kakarott is not concerned about it; that is his business." He growled. "There is a regeneration tank in the gravity chamber that should help her if she runs into any difficulty. It should help you as well, but I would rather have you off this planet."
"And my parents?"
"They will be fine here," He answered. "I already spoke with your father about you potentially leaving with me, should you agree."
Bulma stood there a moment thinking it through. She was so relieved that he hadn't left. She had been sure on their last meeting when he had let her know that he was planning to leave that it would be the last time she would see him for a long time, if ever again. She knew she'd hurt him back on the ship and did not blame him if he decided he wanted to just leave her and move on with his life. Here he was, trying once again to try and salvage their relationship, only he was leaving the choice up to her; he wasn't demanding or begging her to leave with him. He was asking her to make a choice: to stay here or come with him. She knew she needed to consider her answer very carefully. If she declined him on this offer, this may be the very last time she would see him.
A huge part of her wanted nothing more than to go with him; her adventurous side. The side that wanted to explore and see everything that could be seen with someone that knew how things worked, where to go and where not to go. She knew he would keep her safe and out of trouble and he would make sure she would have someplace safe to have their baby. That meant that he would accompany her for the birth and the thought of that overjoyed her that she wouldn't have to do that alone, without him. The small part that was holding her back was the voice in her head reminding her that if she did leave with him, it meant she would have to restore their bond and try to resume a normal life with him. While the thought of the bond still terrified her, she also really wanted to remember her past life with him. If she had trusted him before, then she would take the leap and trust him again. The longer she thought on it, the more she decided that leaving with him wouldn't be such a bad thing. It would be just the two of them with no one else to interfere or have her worry that someone else may be listening in on their conversation. Though if it was just the two of them, she would be stuck in outer space with just him. What if things didn't work out for them? Would he bring her back here? On the other hand, if she rejected this opportunity she would never know if they could have worked things out between them.
"Alright," she finally answered. "I will come with you."
She felt him exhale, his breath brushing against the back of her neck; she hadn't realized that he had been holding his breath this whole time while waiting for her response and she decided in that moment that she had made the right decision. She smiled to herself as she felt his arms snake around her waist and he rested his chin on her right shoulder; she relaxed against him. "And I will put an effort into the bond." She added.
He skimmed his nose up the side of her neck, burying his face in her hair and taking in her scent. He was so relieved that she agreed to come with him. He had honestly assumed she would not want to come; he had very nearly just left without her for fear of yet another rejection from her. He carefully ran his hands along her waist, feeling the small bump beginning to develop there. He smiled against her hair as he sought out the child. As usual, its ki was burning bright and strong and healthy, so far as he could tell anyway. He did not want to leave her to birth their child without him. Despite his hurt at her rejection a few days prior, he would have made sure he had returned for the birth of his son. She hadn't had to know that at the time, however.
"When do we leave?" she asked, taking him out of his thoughts.
"Now." He said, picking her up and holding her bridal style.
"But I don't have anything to wear and I need to say good bye to my parents and Chi-Chi." She objected. "And we need to take Aro back."
"Go home," he said to the medium sized Shepherd. Aro looked at him a moment, his ears flicking forward and back. "Go. Go home." Aro looked at them again for a moment before turning and trotting down the road back towards the house. "Your father knows that if you were leaving with me that it would be today. He will notify everyone else and I took the liberty of packing a few things for you already."
"Did you, now?" she replied with a raised eyebrow. "You were that sure that I would be willing to just up and leave with you? My some people are presumptuous."
"I decided it was a fifty-fifty chance either way." he replied. "I only waited until you were out walking the dog because I figured if I could get you in a good mood, the odds would be more in my favor."
"I see, so you've been plotting against me," she said, tightening her arms around his neck as he leapt into the air.
"I would not go that far. Merely choosing my opportunity so as to have somewhat of an advantage. You are the most stubborn woman I have ever encountered. I needed something working for me," He replied with a playful snort. "Walking the dogs usually puts you in an agreeable mood."
"Ohh, so you actually plotted to approach me when you figured I would be in the best mood to agree to come with you?" she asked with a smile.
"I am not known for being a genius tactician in battle for nothing, Woman." He replied arrogantly. "I always ambush my objective when the odds are stacked in my favor."
"And what if I was walking the dog because I was in a bad mood?" she teased. "Then what? Mr. Tactician?"
"Your body language did not indicate that you were in a foul mood." He answered. "And if it had, I would have simply hung back until near the end of your outing since walking the dogs usually puts you in a decent mood."
"Hmm, know thy enemy." She chuckled as he landed in front of the ship.
"You are not my enemy," he said with a frown, walking into the ship.
"Uh huh." She responded, rolling her eyes.
He put her down as he went to shut the door and then start the ship. She followed him to the control room and took a seat on the passenger's side beside him. She watched him intently as he began to enter in coordinates and fired up the ship. She couldn't help but smile as she felt her stomach flutter in excitement and anticipation of what to expect. She had no idea what to expect! And the thought of that both thrilled her and frightened her.
"Are you sure you want to leave?" he asked, turning to look at her, his face blank and stoic, but his eyes burning intensely through her.
She smiled at him and nodded, "Absolutely."
He smirked his the trademark smirk and launched the ship the second the words of confirmation left her mouth.
