A/N: I remembered the last part of the last chapter different than what actually happened. Let's pretend that Videl had been paralyzed too. And 'you' were either in the bathroom at the time of the reveal for the supreme Kai or just didn't give a shit because this would be the first time you'd heard about a 'kai'.
To those who are waiting for Goku's name to be called out...well, I've got different scenes planned for that. Lol. I'll work in whichever one feels natural at the time. But if you guys want to tell me what you'd think would be awesome I'll definitely take it into consideration.
Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty-four
You watched the exchange between Gohan and Videl as she asked to go with him. She seemed so earnest that it was nice to see; her voice was filled with concern and rightfully so. Just a moment ago Gohan had been laying down and not moving. That was not a state that either you or Videl were used to seeing him in. Plus you liked her nerve as she threatened to follow him anyway. As for you there was pretty much no way that you were staying behind. You had a bone to pick with the funny colored people that let him get stabbed - even if one of them had healed him - as well as the people who stabbed him to drain his energy. And judging by the fact that Gohan didn't look surprised in the least as you joined him and Videl in the air you knew that he understood you weren't in the mood to argue.
"You didn't have to give me your energy," Gohan said, the wind whipping around his body.
"How was I supposed to know that the pink one was a healer?" You asked, not really caring that said 'pink one' was right there. He was one of the reasons Gohan had been stabbed and drained dry to begin with. "Besides if I need the energy back, I'll just eat a snickers."
You had intended for that to be a joke. However it seemed that Gohan was not in a laughing mood. Nor was Videl. You looked to the side to see Videl looking very serious; she was concentrating quite a lot to be able to keep up at this speed. Considering that she really only started to learn how to use Ki within the last month it was still amazing.
"So, big guy, can you tell us what's happening?" Gohan called over to the pink one.
"My name is Kibito," he started off with. "And yes, I can. Long ago, when humankind was still in its infancy, there was a wizard from a distant universe. His name was Bibidi. He created a monster named Majin Buu. Together the two of them destroyed hundred of planets, wiping out entire galaxies. Majin Buu's power was so enormous that nothing could stop him. Back then there had been five grand kais...when they went to try and stop him, only one survived. Eventually the great wizard Bibidi began to have a hard time control the monster. He sealed him with a spell inside of a vessel whenever he wanted to rest. Majin Buu would lay dormant sealed inside this ball until the counterspell was invoked. Bibidi used this spell to transport him from planet to planet. The ball was brought here. The Earth was intended to be Majin Buu's next target."
"That's terrible," Gohan said with a sort of detached fear.
You had to agree. You rather liked Earth. Out of the two planets that you remember being on, Earth was by far your favorite. Cheeseburgers, chocolate...what's not to love?
"Obviously this plan was prevented. But the ball that contains Majin Buu remains here on Earth until this day. And yes, the Supreme Kai could have destroyed him. He chose to leave him hidden."
"What? Why?" You asked in a sort of shocked state.
If they knew that this creature was evil, that it would destroy and destroy, what sense was it to leave it alive? It wasn't like there should have been any doubts by that point. It killed galaxies! And while you weren't sure what the grand kais actually were you were pretty sure that if there had only been 5 of them in existence then killing 4 of them was a big deal. It made no sense to you that they would leave the creature asleep when they knew that a day it might awaken may come in the future.
"I'm with her on this one. Why didn't he destroy him when he had the chance?" Gohan asked.
"Because Majin Buu is no threat as long as he's confined to that ball. And until now we thought Bibidi was the only one who could release him."
"He'd never have been a threat again if he was dead," you reasoned out, unhappily.
"Wait, you said until now?" Videl asked almost in unison with Gohan.
"It would seem that we discovered another. His son - Bobidi. He plans to continue his father's work and release Majin Buu."
"You're joking right? So the son is trying to get revenge for his father. Oh wow, who'd have seen that coming?" your sarcasm was lost on the situation.
Seriously, what the fuck had these people been doing? You still didn't understand why they hadn't just destroyed Majin Buu the moment they could. It would have stopped any worry about the evil creature. But no...no, they left him asleep on Earth. Because that had made sense to them. It seemed like negligence to you.
"At any cost, we must stop him!" Kibito said passionately.
"Then you should have blown up his damned egg!" You called back to him. "Leaving the container unharmed on a planet that keeps drawing so much damned attention is like seeing having an active nuke and an angry toddler in the same room. You have a twisted sense of responsibility."
Gohan called your name nervously as you mouthed off to Kibito. You ignored him as you continued to fly. You simmered in your building rage. These...things came to the Earth when humans were still learning how to human and decided to leave a weapon that wiped out galaxies. Then they were mad that some insane guy wanted to see what it could do.
"We must go faster," Kibito said towards Gohan, though he seemed to be glaring at you in particular.
"Uh, yeah, hold on a sec," Gohan told the large man.
You watched out of the corner of your eye was Gohan fell back to talk to Videl. Given that they were behind you, you couldn't hear them. But it see that neither he nor she parted in bad terms. He quickly covered the few yards between everyone and thanked Kibito for waiting.
You contemplated bringing up just transmitting to them, using one of the others' energy signature as a lock. The only thing was that it was so much harder to do it with a moving target. The faster the target went, the harder too. Which was why you didn't bring it up. You had a year max practice with it and Gohan had maybe 3 months. You weren't confident in your ability to not transmit inside of a mountain or something if you were trying to catch up to something going as fast as Goku and the others. And while Gohan was such a quick study you weren't willing to risk him doing that either. Especially not since either you or he would have a tag along. Besides once everyone was able to kick it up to the next gear, catching up to the other group was pretty easy.
"Good to see you up and moving Gohan," Goku greeted with a smile.
"Yeah. Thanks for waiting," Gohan said.
Though the idea of them "waiting" was really relative in this case. They were following at a distance from those freak bastards that stabbed Gohan with the sucking machine. Any closer and you were sure they'd have caught their attention. Considering the fact that you felt like this was supposed to be the Kai's way of tracking the rat back to its nest it was better to let said rat get back there without catching up to them.
"We're close," the quiet, purple bastard (also known as the supreme Kai) said.
You descended down with everyone else. The area that those two chose to start to poke around in looked like it was freshly dug up. And you noticed that there were a few bodies scattered about. They were left to rot out in the sun and it was that which got to you more than anything. But you weren't the one affected the most. Gohan was practically shaking with anger as he noticed what the new big bad had done. Sure it was just a few bodies (that you could see) but you knew Gohan. Life was precious to him and he was likely blaming himself. He'd been on the planet the whole time as the Bobidi man did this to the area. You knew he'd think that it was his fault for not catching on sooner.
Trying to calm him down, you grabbed his hand and squeezed. You offered him a small smile as he turned to look at you. You wouldn't tell him to relax or that it was okay. That last part would make you out to be a liar. But you could remind him that he wasn't the only one there. That there were others on this planet that could have prevented this but hadn't. Not to mention those two strange people that knew about this evil creature who had done nothing up to this point. If anything they were responsible - they had the knowledge and the power to stop it but they did nothing.
"Hey, someone's coming out," Piccolo announced.
He drew everyone's attention towards the shadowed doorway. It was near impossible to see anything with the stark contrast. Nor did you sense anything until after Piccolo had said anything. Which was really strange. It was all muddy. Like trying to find a tadpole in dirty water. It could be done but with great difficulty. As you concentrated you didn't notice that Goku had begun to crouch down beside you until he was practically shoulder to shoulder. You could feel his clothes brushing up against you. Too close.
The air got tenser as one of the other gasped when they saw who it was. You weren't sure which. But you did know that it was the bigger of the two new people (Kibito) who gave a name to one of the creatures that had started to appear. Dabura.
"What is he doing here?" the smaller one asked in shock.
"That cursed wizard. He's even managed to ensnare the king of the demons."
...that was an actual thing? There were actual demons? Your eyes widened and you accidentally leaned closer to Goku despite the fact that you still had your hand wrapped around Gohan. Goku noticed your shift but said nothing about it as everyone continued to watch from the rocks.
"Which one is Dabura?" Goku asked.
"The tall one," Supreme Kai responded right as two figures walked out of the structure.
The tall one had orange-red skin and definitely looked the part of a demon king. He was broad and carried his shoulders straight. His blue jumpsuit was split down the middle though it seemed to somehow be tapped on as it didn't shift as he moved. The more you tried to study the creatures in front of you the more you realized that you were too close to Goku as well; you righted yourself without trying to make it too obvious. And now that Gohan wasn't about to burst out from the rocks and avenge the fallen people without a plan of attack, you slowly let go of his hand as well.
"I see. Is he strong?"
...Goku. That was pure Goku right there. Though you were at least glad to hear that he didn't sound too excited by that prospect.
"Of course he's strong. He's the King of the demon world."
"Wait a second, what is this demon world?" Gohan asked.
Oh good, you weren't the only one wondering about that. That was actually quite comforting to know.
"It is a shadow world that exists on the other side of this one. Like two sides of the same coin."
"Parallel dimensions," you muttered.
Your life had become such a fantasy sci-fy in the last year and a half that nothing should surprise you at this point. But still, looking at those two weird things below you were pretty surprised.
"One of you may be the strongest in this world, but in his world...Dabura is the strongest by far."
"Guys I'm starting to feel a little outclassed here! I mean, I'll still help out if you need me but uh, uh, how about I take the little guy?" Krillin asked.
You turned your attention towards him. He seemed very nervous. Why weren't you nervous? You should be way more nervous than you currently were. But while you were surprised and hesitant...you didn't feel as nervous as he seemed. You were more curious than anything. You kind of wanted to know what the Supreme Kai counted as 'strongest by far'. Like you really, really wanted to know. It was kind of an annoying itch in the back of your mind. If it was a saiyan thing...no wonder Goku had wanted you to hit him when you first met him.
"The little guy? So that's Bobidi?" Gohan added the commentary.
"Yes, it is. And he is the most dangerous of them all."
"He looks like a dried grape. Or a booger," you said, realizing you spoke aloud only when you heard Vegeta snort in amusement.
You weren't wrong in your assessement, or at least you didn't think so. The man was very small, if he could be called a man at all. His head was engorged and wrinkly with what looked to be thick, singular hairs poking up every so often. His skin color while green was nothing like the Namekians (HaH You remembered what they were called!); it really had a sickly sort of tone to it. His eyes were bulbous in a way that reminded you of an insect and his mouth looked to be protruding just a little bit as well.
"It's not his size, or his looks that you must concern yourself with," the supreme kai said sharply, looking towards you and Krillin as though in warning. "It's his magic that should concern everyone here. If he's able to keep a being such as Debura under control, just imagine the horror he could inflict on this world."
That might be more omnious if anyone, outside of the Supreme Kai and Kibito, actually knew how strong the demon king really was. As it was, you still couldn't grasp how such a thing could be that much of a threat. He had needed to steal Gohan's energy for whatever unlocking spell that he had to do which meant that he obviously didn't have enough in the group or of his own to do such a thing.
"So if this Bobidi is that strong, what's going to keep us from falling under his spell?" Piccolo asked.
That...was actually a very good question. Two points to the big man. The one that wasn't a total fuck up that was.
"He seeks out the evil in a person's heart and enhances it, uses it to bend the person to his will," Kibito, the large total fuck up, answered. "This is how Debura was captured. Once Bobidi influences a person's heart, his control is complete. All he needs is to find but a trace of evil to bring someone under his power. Only those pure of heart and free of evil desires have a chance of fighting him successfully."
He was making a lot of assumptions there. Like, a lot a lot. You looked at the scene before you wearily. So on the team there was Goku and Gohan who, yeah, you would probably say were pretty good on that whole pure hearted scale. And you were sure that you weren't evil per say but...pure? That might be a bit too far stretched. You couldn't really speak for Krillin. But what concerned you most was Mr. Grumpy prince of all saiyans who had come down to murder everyone only to find that the Earth put up too much of a fight. There was also the son of King Piccolo who somehow merged with Kami, the same guy who made a wish on the dragonballs that screwed over your heart. You didn't trust that either of those two were completely pure of heart...nor did you trust the negligent bastards who were at fault for this whole situation to begin with.
"Basically only Gohan and his dad then," you said plainly. "No offense."
Goku turned to you and blinked, "My name is Goku."
"She knows your name dad," Gohan answered for you quietly.
Goku went quiet as he stared back out at the foes that laid before everyone. You had a feeling he was contemplating the fact that you hadn't said his name once since you 'met' him. Though more than likely his thoughts turned back to the upcoming fight. Especially as the pale fighting freakies handed over the jug of Gohan.
"Are we going to go down now?" Goku asked the supreme kai.
"I never anticipated that Debura would be here too. This changes everything."
"Surely the Supreme Kai isn't afraid, is he?" Vegeta snarked.
You smiled. He was growing on you. Definately much faster than those other people.
"Hn, fine you can cower up here on these rocks if you want. I'll take them on myself if you don't have the stomach for it."
"I may just let you do that Vegeta," Krillin said, edging back. Not that you saw him do that from your spot between Goku and Gohan.
Goku looked back at his old friend, "Krillin, these guys seem pretty tough. Don't you think you should get back to your family?"
Oh look, now he remembered that people should stay with their family. It was both a bitter reminder and a happy spark in your mind. At least he'd sort of understood that concept even if, from what you heard from Gohan, he hadn't applied it to his own life while Gohan was growing up.
"Well I'd like to stick around but it looks like you have everything covered without me."
So much posturing. It was actually quite amusing. Though you tried to keep your thoughts quiet this time. Those might seem a little insulting given the fact that this wasn't a game. But with wizards and demons out there about to do an unholy spell to unseal a monster...well, that felt like a bit of a game. More so than aliens from outer space attacking at least.
"And I'd hate to think of what your wife would do to me if I let anything happen to you," Goku joked.
"Yeah, she does have a bit of a temper. But hey," Krillin laughed, "I love her."
Instead of watching the exchange between Goku and Krillin, though you heard it, you kept your eyes on the valley below. The green booger man walked to the demon man. There seemed to be something happening down there with the excited body posture of the guy who'd practically broke Videl in half. And then…
"Yo, guys, something's happening," You called their attention back to the valley below.
One of the freaky mans called up in pain, reaching to the sky. Shortly after he went boom. The other one tried to run away. He took to the sky as quickly as he could manage but was not-so-friendly fired out of existence for his attempts at survival. Back up at the rocks everyone seemed to be taking the deaths pretty hard. There was a mix crowd of nervous twitches and surprise.
"What kind of people kill their own partners?"
"...didn't you say Vegeta killed the other saiyan who came down a few years ago?" You reminded Gohan.
That didn't seem to make him feel any more comfortable with the situation. And it wasn't meant to. You didn't want to say it out right because you might be wrong but if this Supreme Kai and Kibito were to be believed at all, then there was a chance they were going to take one of the knights of the group for their own side. Then again, there was also the chance that Vegeta really had changed. After all, from what you could tell in the brief time you'd known him he was a loyal partner of sorts to Bulma and a decent enough father to Trunks. Still, this whole concept of controlling a person through even a speck of darkness in their hearts was making you feel very on edge.
"Yes, he did," Goku said in a solemn tone. "Vegeta, maybe you should--"
"If you tell me to sit this one out Kakarot, I will come over there and bitch slap you into the rockface."
He really wasn't making you feel too much better about that dark heart control thing. Although you really did like his threat. It sounded fun. ...what did that say about your own heart?
