Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty-seven
At some point in life you were sure that you held life in higher esteem. You must have cared what happened to others at some point because you knew that you weren’t a heartless monster. But you felt very little as you contemplated the fact that you had killed twice in one day. Twice. And non-sentient animals aside, that had been the first time you killed anything. You knew you should have felt something deeper than you did, that it would only be right. But you didn’t. You felt next to nothing as you thought back on the murders you committed. Maybe it was the fact that they’d been looking to destroy Earth (or so said the negligent Kai) that made your actions feel consequenceless. Or it might have been the fact that neither of your victims looked remotely “human”. But whatever it was you felt no guilt. Which was odd because you felt guilty over not feeling guilty. How messed up was that?
“Looks like we’re done here,” Vegeta said in a gruff, unhappy tone.
“No,” you said quietly. “There’s still the demon king guy. Otherwise the other two stay as stone.”
It seemed as though you’d given Vegeta a small present when you told him there was still a fight to be had. Gohan and Goku, however looked less than thrilled. And the Supreme Kai looked to be on the verge of passing out. He probably couldn’t handle the fact that his understanding of the universe had been drastically altered so quickly.
“Aw man, but that means I don’t get a turn,” Gohan sounded so disappointed that you couldn’t help but laugh.
His pout was cute in that amusing way. Especially when he crossed his arms over his chest. It was easy to see his age in his pout. And there was also the fact that he looked like he’d been denied his turn on a video game more so than a fight to the potential death. Then again maybe you didn’t quite understand what it felt like to not have someone nearby to challenge you. Fighting at their level no doubt shook things up so they needed to find an excuse to participate in that level of destruction.
“Hm, take on the demon king then boy,” Vegeta practically ordered. “I thought that these weaklings could at least be entertaining but so far they’ve been nothing but a disappointment. I have something more important to waste my time on than these rejects.“
“What could be more important than Bobidi’s henchmen?” Supreme Kai asked.
No one answered that verbally. But all eyes turned to Goku. Said saiyan didn’t look the least surprised as Vegeta strode forward. The two of them had an intense stare off and for a moment you wondered if Vegeta and Goku had like a thing. Other than the rivalry of course.
“Yeah, why not?” Goku finally spoke. “I could do with a good warm up before I go back to the other world.”
“Big talk for a man that let himself get blown up,” Vegeta returned.
“We’ll see Vegeta.”
You had a feeling that the match between Vegeta and Goku was going to be one for the century. Almost every part of you wanted to go watch but you also understood that it wasn’t a spectator match. You didn’t want to get in the way of either of them. You would likely end up being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Besides...you reasoned that you probably shouldn’t stay around Goku while he was in the living world in case you slipped up. There was still plenty of time screw up while Goku was temporarily alive. As much as it hurt knowing that he didn’t know you, you weren’t sure if you wanted to know what would happen if he did. If he remembered and wanted to stay with you, one day was too short. If he remembered and didn’t love you anymore then that might break you. It was just bad situation all around.
Thankfully the door to a sub chamber opening up was enough to distract you from your depressing thoughts. Everyone tensed up, ready for a confrontation, as Debura stepped out. He was massive and there was an aura of power radiating around him. It felt like pure malice. The fur on your tail stood uncomfortably on edge. As you looked to Gohan you realized that he had forgone the pout in favor of a serious expression. This was the man thing responsible for stoning two of his friends after all.
“Hurry this up boy,” Vegeta snapped. “There are better things to do.”
“Careful Gohan. Even without Bobidi’s magic, Debura is still the strongest warrior in the shadow world.”
“Don’t worry about me, Supreme Kai,” Gohan said with a reassuring calmness to him.
You walked towards him as the Demon King took in what had happened. From the look on his face he was both disoriented and angry. You overlooked him in favor of paying more attention to Gohan.
You pushed against his shoulder and told him with a smile, “Sooner you beat him, sooner your friends go back to normal.”
Gohan nodded. “Right.”
You hovered up and kissed his cheek for luck. On your way back down you noticed that he was blushing. Which only amused you.
“Kick his ass Gohan.”
And so he did.
After all, despite how much weaker you were than Gohan, you had at least helped him polish off some of that rust.
______________________________
You ended up watching Goku’s and Vegeta’s fight regardless of your earlier reservations. They traded blows with such intensity and speed that you weren’t able to keep up. You felt the sheer power radiate from them though. You felt the earth quake and the wind shift every single time they did something extraordinary. Just seeing the levels that they rose to was enough to get your heart pounding in a good way. A good sized portion of you couldn’t help but want to do that, to get to that level. But realistically you knew you weren’t as dedicated to the craft as they were. There were far too many things going on with your life for you to focus on training as much as they did.
But you couldn’t help but dream in excitement as you tried to watch them. Gohan was beside you, grinning ear to ear, as he followed the conflict. Every once in awhile he’d make a comment. Or like a sympathetic wince. You playfully nudged him when he seemed to really get into it.
You noticed about midway through the fight that there was a couple other powers headed your way. The boys had finally almost made it. This time you tugged on Gohan’s green toga to get his attention. He seemed more into the fight than you were if that was possible.
“Mini ones incoming,” you told him.
Gohan nodded, almost grudgingly moving his eyes away from the battle of the dads. Dad. Goku was a dad. It was just...the reminder was sorely needed but less than pleasant. Not only was he currently dead but he was an actual Dad with a capital D. Not the fun D either. At least not for your poor heart. Which you were abusing well enough on your own with all of the guilt that had steadily been climbing.
“Gohan! Gohan!” Trunks called out at the same time that Goten called: “Big brother!”
“Heya Goten, Trunks,” Gohan greeted.
The two small halflings landed and rushed over the rest of the way. The battle between Goku and Vegeta went unabated as the younger ones finally arrived.
“It’s the fun lady Trunks!” Goten said excitedly when he realized that you were there.
“I see that Goten,” Trunks has quite the arrogant tone. His eyes looked towards the war zone behind you and Gohan. “Uh...why are our dads fighting?”
The way he asked it almost, almost sounded like he was including you in that “our dads” group. Which felt so wrong, so very wrong.
“Oh, don’t worry Trunks, nothings wrong,” Gohan soothed over. “They're just having some fun. This fight has just been a long time coming.”
“They’re moving so fast!” Goten said excitedly. “Wow! I can’t keep up Gohan.”
“Don’t worry about it squirt, you’ll get there eventually.”
Even as he spoke to his brother, Gohan turned his gaze slightly to you. He couldn’t help but wonder what you’d look like as a Super Saiyan.
Trunk caught the look and misinterpreted it. He frowned and got Goten’s attention, moving a bit away and talking to his only real friend in a whisper voice.
“How long has Gohan known the new lady?”
Goten tilted his head slightly as he thought about it. “Uh, since he started school I guess. Why?”
“Cause I think he likes her Goten,” Trunks said in a “no duh” tone, just out of audible range of you and Gohan.
“Really? I like her too!”
“No. Like...how boys like girls. Marriage you dummy.”
“Is that a type of cookie?” Goten asked innocently.
Trunks very nearly sweatdropped. “No. It means that she’ll be your new sister because he's going to marry her."
Goten's eyes widened as he looked back to where you and Gohan were watching the fight. A couple thoughts flew through his head and he smiled in joy.
"So if she's going to be my new sister, does that mean she'll live with us too?" Goten asked Trunks in an excited whisper.
Trunks nodded once, sharply with a serious look on his little face. Goten jumped and flipped in joy.
"Oh yeah! I'm going to have a new sister to play with!"
Trunks crossed his arm and frowned. "That's not fair. You already have Gohan."
But Goten wasn't paying to Trunks as he ran up to you. You were surprised when a bundle of energy and spunk jumped at your back. But you bent slightly to take the impact, your hands going to grab at his legs to support his weight.
"We're going to have so much fun! I'm going to show you all my favorite toys and places to play!" Goten said excitedly as he bounced around on your back.
You nodded and hummed to acknowledge his statement. Most of your attention was on the fight as both Vegeta and Goku had slowed down. It was clear that they were running out of energy but there was no lack of will to continue. It was beautiful in a brutal sort of way.
"It's going to be so awesome when you marry big brother!"
...wait…
You went completely still and your eyes went wide. You looked towards Gohan to see if he heard the same thing you just had. He looked to be just as shocked as you were. Which meant that he heard it too. The good thing was that you weren't hearing things. The bad news was that you had to fight the embarrassment and shock that rose up fast and ruthlessly in order to explain to a rambunctious kid that you weren't marrying his brother.
"Goten!" Gohan called out in embarrassment. "It's not - we're not…"
He was at as big of a loss for words as you were.
"HEY DAD! GOHAN IS GETTING MARRIED TO BELLA! I'M GOING TO HAVE A NEW BIG SIS!"
The fight stopped at that announcement; at least it did from Goku's side. Vegeta took that exact moment to land a solid punch to Goku's face that sent him flying into a rock formation.
