Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Forty-eight
Goku pulled himself out of the rubble rather slowly. The hit had disoriented him, that was true, but Goku knew himself better than to think that was the reason he was so dazed. No, the feeling that he had came before he’d gotten hit into a mound of rocks. It had come when his youngest son announced that his oldest was getting married. And not to just any body, you. He didn’t know you, though at moments he felt he did, which might explain the uneasy pit in his stomach. Gohan...married...to you. Goku shook his head as he brushed himself off.
Before he had much time to contemplate the tight feeling that was enveloping all his organs in its heated grip, Vegeta was back on the assault. Goku blocked and returned as many hits as he could. But he wasn’t enjoying it nearly as much as before. Nor were his thoughts solely on that moment. As Vegeta soon realized when another one of his hits made contact with Goku’s stomach and the next quick jab to his face.
“Damn it Kakarot!” Vegeta roared. “Stop getting distracted! This fight is between you and I! It has nothing to do with your brat and the woman!”
Goku took in a deep shaky breath as he wiped blood from his split lip. His body heaved from the exertion that staying in his super saiyan form put on him during the brutal fight. His muscles tensed and some parts of his body were definitely going to be bruised in a few hours. That wasn’t to say that Vegeta had gotten off Scot free. Oh no, the Prince was in quite the same situation as Goku. The only difference was that Goku had gotten distracted in the last few minutes.
“Heh,” Goku laughed under his breath. “Sorry Vegeta. I think I’m done fighting. I’m spent. And I think I have a son I need to talk to before my time is up.”
He’d been on Earth sometime between sunrise and noon. He wasn’t exactly sure on the exact hour. And based on the sun it was maybe an hour or two until sunset. Which meant that at best he had maybe 14 to 15 hours left. As much as he wanted to fight Vegeta till neither of them could move, Goku figured that maybe that wasn’t as important as Goten’s news. Which was a funny feeling actually. When had anything besides protecting people become more important than fighting?
“Done?” Vegeta asked, his fists clenched and body starting to shake. “Done? We’re not done here Kakarot! Not until I prove once and for all that I am the strongest warrior!”
“No, pretty sure we’re done,” Goku said good naturedly as he powered down. “I’m beat. You’re a lot stronger than when we faced Cell.”
Vegeta had a hard time comprehending what was going on. He started to rush in to start the fight again because it wasn’t over. But Goku was gone in an instant, leaving Vegeta’s fist to make dust out of the rock that had been behind Goku’s Head. His guttural scream of rage echoed in the surrounding area for anyone to hear.
Which everyone near you could. It reached your ears about the same time that Goku’s appearance reached your eyes. You jumped back in surprise as he instant transmitted in front of everyone.
He’d been to Yardrats.
Your heart squeezed tightly in your chest at that thought. Sometime between when you’d left him and he died, he’d been to Yardrats for an extended amount of time. At least long enough to learn the instant transmission technique. You would have been in the medical coma that kept you from aging while he was there. Tucked away in the medical wing. But knowing Goku he’d probably gotten hurt at some point...then again there were many settlements on that planet. You had only been at one of them. He could have been anywhere on the planet.
“Your marrying Gohan?” Goku asked abruptly.
“No,” you answered quickly.
“But Goten said—-“
“Yes you are!” Goten practically shouted from his spot on your back.
That was the second time in the last few minutes that he’d made you wince from the volume.
“Goten who told you that?” Gohan asked nervously.
“Trunks,” the youngest said factually.
Trunks looked up at where Goten was then around to you, Gohan, and Goku. He got the feeling that there was something more going on but he couldn’t put his finger on it. He’d been sure that Gohan liked you. He was still pretty sure on that. But you and Gohan looked like you were trying to deny that. He didn’t get it. All the people on TV always seemed to be happy to get married.
“So you’re not getting married then Gohan?” Goku’s next question was directed to His eldest son.
Gohan shook his head, hands up in defense. “No! No, nothing like that. We’re just friends.”
If you didn’t know any better you’d say there was a relieved expression on Goku’s face. That made your stomach flutter but you pushed it back.
“Oh okay.”
Trunks looked around the tall adults. He saw his father stalking up. It was an odd sight - the fact that he was walking instead of flying up. And from what Trunks could see he looked angry. Really angry. Which was only punctuated by the fact that when he got close enough to Goku, Vegeta punched him in the jaw.
“Our fight is not over Kakarot,” Vegeta spat out. “I don’t care if you’re jealous of your son. You will fight me or I swear I will destroy you.”

“Oh Goku,” Chichi said in what seemed like both a reprimand and a caring tone.
You weren’t sure how she managed it. What you were sure of was the fact that you didn’t want to stay around to watch the reunion again. He needed to be with his family, the one he remembered at least, before he went back. As much as you disliked Chichi for her rudeness and the bitter jealousy that rose as you watched her follow behind Gohan and Goku. Gohan had his father propped up on his shoulder. Vegeta had sure done a number on him. Though you really didn’t know why he didn’t just take a senzu bean. The only reason you could think of was that they wanted Chichi to see him battered to make her indignation take back stage to her concern.
Thankfully it worked. You weren’t sure if you could have taken her yelling at them for leaving a silly tournament. Though to her it wasn’t silly given the prize money but still...if she was so concerned why didn’t she just get a job? You held your bitterness in with that question though. And you lingered at the door.
Goten broke the mood, “Mom! I’m hungry! Where’s dinner?”
You saw a sort of anger welling up as Chichi turned to look from Goku to Goten. You decided to step in both literally and figuratively.
“Goten, Gohan...why don’t you come with me to get dinner? That way your mom and dad can relax and talk. Are you okay with that ma’am?” You asked as politely as you could.
Chichi looked at you. She seemed ready to fight you on that notion but both Gohan and Goten were already agreeing.
“I can bring Goten back in the morning. That way you have some time to just visit,” you’d tried to say ‘with your husband’ but you couldn’t bring yourself to say it. “Gohan can stay with me too if you want.”
What was one other visitor?
“Now see here!” Chichi started.
You realized that after her misconceptions just from that very morning, that your offer probably seemed to confirm her worst thoughts of you.
“Mom!” Gohan jumped in nervously. “I think it’s s good idea. You can tell dad everything that’s been happening and not have to worry. I promise I’ll take care of Goten. Nothing will happen.”
Goten was grinning as he held your hand, swinging himself from it happily. “Please mom? Please? I’ll be on my best behavior!”
“Oh alright,” she gave in. Though she looked at you with a stink eye. “If anything happens…”
“It won’t,” you told her sincerely. “Have a good night. I’ll make sure your boys are fed.”
Before she could come up with any more objections, you reached out your other hand towards Gohan. He grabbed it with a nervous smile. You concentrated a great deal as it was harder when both of your hands were taken. But before long you were in your studio apartment with the two boys. You never saw Goku instinctive attempt to get up and follow when he realized that everyone was leaving. Nor the unhappy way he finally chewed on the senzu bean. Instead you dealt with an over excited Goten and a relieved feeling Gohan.
“Thanks,” Gohan said quietly. “I know it probably wasn’t easy to do that for mom and she won’t understand but...thanks.”
You smiled weakly and nodded. You just hoped that Goku was gone before the pain was too much for you to contain.
