Heero jumped out of his chair and approached Relena afraid that his own ears had deceived him.

“I think we should be excused for a moment” Treize whispered to Zech who knobbed his head in understanding. Both took their leave, leaving Relena and Heero to themselves.

“Did I just hear you say Duo?” Heero asked, hoping…
“Yes. That is his name. Why?” Relena said.
“Please take me to him” Heero pleaded.
“I wish I could but I really don’t’ know where he is, he appears out of the shadow at times. However, I will take you to where I see him everyday so you might see him tomorrow with me! Oh how Duo would love to meet more friends!” Relena chirped.

True to her word, Relena woke up bright and early in the morning, ate a little breakfast making sure to pack a few crumpets for Duo and brought Heero to the gardens.

“This was where I saw Duo for the first time, He was picking flowers and sitting there as if he was waiting for someone” Relena said while looking around to see if she could spot the young boy. To her dismay, Duo didn’t show up again today. “He must not be feeling too well today” Relena puffed. “I apologize Heero for taking much of your time.”

“No, it is I who should thank you. I will go alone tomorrow. I want to see him alone” Heero said as he retreated back to his room. Leaving Relena standing at the gardens wondering why Heero would make such a request. Didn’t he need an introduction?

By the next morning Heero was already out of his room before the first crack of sun light hit the horizon. Hiding behind an erect statue in the garden, Heero peaked out once or twice to see if he could spot Duo. Heero crouched down and waited for what felt like hours. Just as he felt he was about to give up; Out of the corner of his eye, something white glowing off the beam from the sun caught Heero’s attention. Heero jumped back to his hiding spot and slowly peeked out to spy.

His breath caught in his throat. Heero rubbed his eyes to assure himself that the lack of sleep was not playing tricks to his eyes. Sitting in the middle of the garden was a boy with long strands of chestnut hair tied loosely into a pony tail and a simple white oversized shirt and baggy breeches.

Heero wasn’t aware that he breathed out a single name from his lips…”Duo..?” Heero barely whispered out, looking at the boy who was so hard at work making a crown of lilies.

Duo however, looked up when he heard his name. He thought it was Relena, who had returned to see him today. Duo put on a big smile and faced the direction of the voice, but when he saw it wasn’t Relena, Duo’s smile quickly vanished. His eyes wide and dilated looked frightened.

With speed Heero wouldn’t have imagined the boy to have, Duo ran into the forest garden. Heero quickly perused the smaller boy, trying to match Duo’s speed, but the more he tried, the more he stumbled over the twisted tree roots and had branches snap back at him.

“Duo! Wait. Where are you going?” Heero shouted out, trying his best to follow the faster boy.

Heero broke through a clearing, eyes scanning the grounds rapidly searching, but there was no sight of the boy.

“Duo! Please don’t do this! Where are you? I’m so sorry Duo” Heero shouted out, but there was not answer. ‘Why should there be?’ Heero thought…you didn’t trust Duo…it was no wonder Duo ran. “Please don’t leave me…” Heero whimpered to no one but himself, clenching his eyes tight, fighting the emotions ripping at him like tide on the sandy beach.

Heero turned around and quickly ran back home. He immediately formed a search party. He lost Duo once, because of his stubbornness and lack of trust in Duo, he was not going to let it happen again.

Heero commanded that Duo be found and no matter how many stones they turn over, no one can return empty handed. A huge reward and honors would be given to the first person to bring Duo to him safe, and unharmed. No one questioned Heero’s request, even if there was a reward or not involved, the people would have served Heero faithfully.

~~~***~~~
Night came swiftly upon Heero that he hardly even noticed he hasn’t eaten the entire day just searching for Duo. Frustrated at the situation and himself, Heero didn’t hear a guard approaching him until he was startled by someone clearing their voice.
“Prince Heero” the guard said bowing down in respect.
“Please rise and tell me of good news!” Heero said tiredly.
“I think we might have a lead on the where about of –“ the guard paused to find other words to describe Duo besides being Heero’s slave, servant.
“Duo?” Heero said wide eyed and alert.
“Y-yes Prince Heero” the guard turned crimson with embarrassment.
“Where?” Heero demanded, “Better yet. Show me!”
The Guard did just as he was told. He brought Heero deep into the palace gardens where a small mud hut made of hay, twigs and hard packed earth.
“Is he in there?” Heero asked softly.
“The hut was empty when we arrived. The only thing we found was a few articles of clothing, a bag we dare not open and a crown of flowers” The guard said, entering the small hut and reappearing with the bundle of clothes with the said bag and crown of lilies. Duo’s favorite.
Heero took the small bag which was quite heavy and opened it. Inside, there were assortments of diamonds, pearls and a few gold coins. How Duo was in possession of these jewels were still in question. However, at the moment, the thought could be far from Heero’s mind.
“Ready the horses, Duo must be on foot! He must not have gone too far in his condition” Heero said, giving out the command to head out. They will find Duo no matter how long it takes. ‘This was my fault’ Heero thought to himself. ‘I have caused you pain, suffering, and a broken heart which you didn’t deserve, will you ever forgive a foolish man in love?’
