Chapter
5
Getting
toward the bit I know you're looking for.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ray
closed his eyes, wiping the tears from his face as he straightened, body feeling
like water as he reached up and flushed the toilet. Again, he had been sick. As
soon as the two had walked out the door and driven away Ray had found himself
running for the bathroom, the dinner he had so carefully forced down returning
with a vengeance.
Splashing
the water on his face he washed away the makeup. If Bryan already knew Ray was
sick, then there was no need for Ray to hide the fact. Still, Ray continued to
wonder just what it was that had given it away. What it was that had made Bryan
realise that all was not well in paradise.
Moving
to his bedroom Ray scowled down at the still rumpled blankets of his bed. With a
growl he tore the cover off, pulling all the sheets free before bundling them up
into a heap and marching down the hall and dumping them into the washing
machine, turning it on. It was on his way back he spotted Bryan curled in a
chair in the living room by the fire, eyebrows raised as eyes sparkled with
curiosity over the top of his book.
Ray
didn’t even bother to acknowledge him, feeling Bryan’s gaze as he moved to
the linen closest and pulled out some new sheets before returning to his room
and setting about making his bed.
The
old sheets had smelt of Kai and Tala, as well as the sweet smell that seemed to
accompany the rough activities of the night. There was a time Ray would lay on
his bed, smiling dreamily as he d up up their scent, but that time had past.
Now all he smelt wntrantrapment and suffocation, and it was that smell that left
him feeling sick.
By
the time he had made his bed it was almost pitch black outside, Ray moving to
tug the blinds closed. Noting the dust, Ray searched his drawers and found the
dusting cloth, going over his room and removing every skerrick, knowing full
well that coorniorning it would have once more settled.
Following
the dusting he made about rearranging and tidying up his drawers and wardrobe,
before sorting through the papers on his desk and putting them in order. This
done, Ray dropped onto the chair by the desk and turned on his computer, quickly
changing the background from the image of him, Kai and Tala to one of the White
Tigers when they had been young.
After
answering a bundle of email and deleting and blocking miles of spam, Ray stifled
a yawn, smirking before opening a new message and typing in the address.
Pausing, he typed in the message: YOU DON’T SOCIALISE MUCH, DO YOU?
Hitting
send, he went back to sorting through the last of his mail when the reply came
back. Ray raised an eyebrow as he realised that the other must be online.
Opening the message, he had to l. FI. FIND ME SOMEONE WORTH SOCIALISING WITH,
AND I WILL.
Typical
Bryan. Shaking his head, Ray pondered as to why Bryan was online at this
late hour, but he brushed it off. Tala had once commented that Bryan had a habit
of burning the candle at bother ends, and this was probably what he was doing.
Glancing
at the time, Ray raised an eyebrow and real tha that he had better go to bed
himself. Hitting the reply button, he typed in a message: GOODNIGHT, BRYAN.
DON’T STAY UP TOO LATE.
Stretching
after he had hind, nd, he knew the wait for the reply wouldn’t be long, and it
wasn’t. Less than five minutes after sending the message, Ray had his reply,
opening it and smiling faintly. JUST ABOUT TO HIT THE HAY. SLEEP WELL, KITTEN.
Shutting
down his computer Ray found some clean pyjamas and tugged them on, pulling his
hair free and workit int into a loose ponytail. Turning off the rooms main
lights moved toward and clambered into bed, sliding between the sheets and
reaching out to turn off the lamp, glad that he might have the chance to sleep.
Almost
instantly, though, he was lonely.

Short
again, but I'll make for it next chapter.
For
those who don't know, to burn a candle at both ends is to be awake all day and
stay up all night. It is likened to a candle in the fact that if you light a
candle at one end it will burn down, but if you light both ends it will
burn out twice as fast to leave nothing. It is certainly not good to burn the
candle at both ends because it has a negative reaction on your body.
