~Part 5: Hope
Guides Me~
“Oh, would you just hold still for five minutes!? Ohhh! Doctor, Doctor!?”
“I will not hold still for an incompetent woman like
you! Let me go, I have to find Duo, I’m perfectly fine, now get out of my way,
stupid on’na[1]!” Wufei tried with all his might to push the nurse out
of his way while dragging another nurse clinging to him.
“You are still… ugh, very weak! You shouldn’t even
be out of bed, much less thinking of leaving the hospital! Now… oh! Get in bed!!” Wufei growled at the nurse and tried
pushing her out of the way again, but more nurses—this time male, came running
into the room and effectively tackled Wufei back down onto the bed.
Unfortunately, for Wufei, they had to tie him down, so he wouldn’t get up
again. Wufei yelled bloody fury at all the nurses, most of them cowering away
from his anger—they didn’t want to be at the receiving end of an ex-Gundam pilot’s rage. Just as most of the nurses were
scurrying out of the room (and away from Wufei’s
anger), the doctor came in and placed his hands on his hips in a very
un-approving manner. The doctor frowned deeper when Wufei wouldn’t stop
struggling against his restraints and yelling at no one in particular.
“Wufei, please… you must calm yourself—this is for
your own good…. If you do not lie still for the nurses to change your bandages
or check your wounds every single time they need you to, you will never recover
fully.” Wufei growled at the doctor again and just kept pulling at his
restraints without much success. The doctor just grew more upset with Wufei’s attitude and said,
“Will you stop acting like a child for ten minutes
and listen to what I am saying to you!?” Wufei stopped pulling on his
restraints for a moment and glared at the doctor defiantly. “That’s better.
Now, I understand that you are worried for Duo, but he is a big boy, he can take
care of himself… you on the other hand, seemingly cannot! You have fought with
us ever since the moment you recovered awareness in here and it is not helping
your injuries—you must know what Heero has done to you…? Just let us take care
of you, then, when you are completely healed,
you can go look for Duo as much as you like.” Wufei just lay there, pouting at
the doctor, taking in deep breaths of air. He did not want to sit around for
another two weeks and do nothing, not when he could easily be out there looking
for Duo and making everything better again…
Wufei bit his tongue, to keep himself from replying
to the doctor, he hated them all; nobody ever understood his motivations or why
he needed to do the things he needed to. He had to find Duo, now! No matter
what anybody else said about his health, he knew Duo was in trouble somewhere
and it was all his fault…. Why couldn’t they just let
him go for a couple of days, and after he had found Duo, he would come right
back…? No, that definitely wasn’t going to happen, so Wufei just continued to
sit there with his arms and legs tied down, glaring at the doctor who just kept
babbling on about how he shouldn’t be so irresponsible and blah, blah, blah….
“Now, are you going to act like an adult and stay in
bed and let us take care of you, or are you going to make us treat you like a
five-year-old and put you in the children’s ward?” Wufei just frowned deeper
and stuck his lip out more, adding to the pathetic pout he was putting on. The
doctor just sighed and raised his head, then turned and left, leaving Wufei
alone…. Wufei watched the doctor leave and just stared at the door for a long
moment, until he was brought back to the world of the living by the loud
chirping sound of a bird outside his open window…… open… window…? Wufei’s eyes widened and a devious smile formed on his
lips—why hadn’t he thought of that sooner!? He was an ex-Gundam
Pilot for crying out loud!
Wufei quickly darted his eyes back to the door to make
sure nobody was coming; he quickly made short use of the pathetic restraints
they had put him in, then he jumped out of bed and ran over to the window… he
was only three stories high, no problem…... Well, maybe for Heero, it would be
no problem… Wufei never had any experience with jumping out of a forty
foot-high building. Wufei shook his head at the thought of the crazy stunt
Heero would so willingly perform and he was about to do. Okay, no time to
chicken out, he had to do this—if he wanted everything back the way it was, at
least. Wufei turned back again to check the door once more, then he ran over to
the chair nearby and quickly pulled the stupid hospital robe he had been forced
to wear, off and changed into his blue tank-top and white pants that had been
brought to him by Trowa earlier that week.
Okay, this was it; Wufei walked back over to the
window and looked out wearily, considering the few options he had available to
him—one: he either jumps out the window and hopes to dear god that he doesn’t
break anything more in the landing, or two: he attempts to jump into the tree, next to the building, that’s almost
ten feet away[2]—that’s
a long jump…. Okay! Option three…… there is no option three—damn. Wufei looked around for a moment
and sighed heavily, option two it is! Wufei looked back one more time—nobody coming… he climbed up into the
window and sat in a crouched position for a moment, building his courage;
normally this would have been nothing, but it had been almost five years since
he’d jumped out of any buildings or attempted to ‘fly’, and he was injured
still—there was no doubt about that.
Wufei didn’t care about any of it though,
he just wanted—needed to find Duo… before he went mad. Wufei took a deep
breath, readied himself and… jumped……
~ * * ~
Oh. My. God.
I’m going to die…. Why did I do this? I’m such a bloody moron; I’m going to
kill myself falling out a window; now I’ll never be able to find Duo; what in
the world possessed me to do such a crazy stunt when I could never even do it
while I was completely healed…? Oh shit, this is going to hurt……
~ * * ~
Wufei could only stare as the
branch grew closer and closer, then suddenly collided with it, doubling over it
in pain. A low moan escaped Wufei’s lips, his face
contorted with pain as he slowly slipped off the branch and down onto the next,
only this time catching it at the last second and hanging on for dear life. He
looked down and stared at the ground for a moment as if it were boiling hot
lava threatening to scald him. Then he took a deep breath and let go, falling
to the ground with an uncharacteristically loud thump, groaning when he landed.
Wufei could only sit still for a couple of minutes, clutching his ribs
protectively, gritting his teeth from the pain—he knew he had to of broken more
ribs or just broke the already injured ones more.
It took him a while but Wufei
finally caught his breath and balance, standing himself up slowly, as not to
injure himself more, this was definitely going to put a damper on things. Wufei
didn’t let that discourage him though, finding Duo was more important than his
trivial injuries—Duo came first. Wufei forced himself to his feet and he slowly
dragged his injured body out of site and away from the hospital, making sure to
check occasionally if anyone happened to be following him; he had to hurry
though, because somebody was bound to find out eventually that he was no longer
caged within the confines of that horrid room and they would come searching for
him—his apartment being the first place to search, so he had to hurry if he
wanted to change out of the all too conspicuous clothes he was wearing—they
were fine during the war but now… they were just a tad overboard. This was going
to be one hell of an adventure……
When Wufei arrived at his apartment
complex, he swiftly sneaked inside and up to his second floor apartment. He
took the hidden key from its hiding place above the door frame and unlocked the
door, sending a warm blast of air out towards him. Damn, hasn’t anybody been here to check on my things? What about my
poor plants? Wufei slowly made his way over to a group of Bougainvillea and
Asian Lily[3] that sat in the far corner of the living
room, upon a small table. He stared at the slightly wilting leaves for a
moment, lifting the green appendages in his fingers as delicately as he
could—this upset him, he took so much care and pride in these little things and
nobody bothered to even water them—well maybe once, but that still wasn’t
enough; the only reason why the poor plants were still alive was probably
because of all the plant food and vitamins Wufei gave them…. Wufei pulled away
from the sad looking greens and reluctantly dragged himself to his room; he
still had to find Duo, he had no time for this—he would take care of them
later, after he found Duo.
When Wufei had finally finished
dressing himself and cleaning up a little, he took one last, long glance around
his apartment; finding nothing of importance he started for the door, but when
he heard loud footsteps running up the stairs out in the hall, and voices
yelling to each other, “Hurry, this is his place, he couldn’t have gotten far!”
he froze.
~ * * ~
Shit! How could they have gotten
here so fast!? Damn, now I’ll have climb to the roof… I really didn’t want to
have to do that…… Well, I can’t let them catch me now. Where, where—bedroom!
Damn, why do I always have to lock my stupid window…? Ow…
I’m never going to hear the end of this—erhg… eh, man
that hurts…
~ * * ~
Wufei stubbornly forced himself to
climb the stairs on the outside of his building, still clutching his wounds,
flinching each time he took a step, but he continued without faltering,
reaching the roof-top before anyone could find him. He let out a great sigh of
relief and cautiously peered back over the edge of the roof to check if anybody
had followed him… Good, nobody’s coming,
now I have to get down from here, I’m not taking another tree down though! Wufei
searched for the roof-top door that would connect to the inside stairs, used
for emergencies and also when the elevator wasn’t working, and would lead him
back down to the ground. When he found the blue door and started to head back
down the stairs, he heard more voices coming from behind the door that stood
just to his right; he froze and listened for a moment, unable to clearly make
out what was being said, but when he saw the knob to the door start to turn,
his eyes grew wide and he took off down the stairs, skipping steps in his
frantic escape, sometimes even jumping from the very top of one platform to the
next.
When Wufei finally made it to the bottom
floor, he took a sharp turn to his left and bolted out the back door that lead
into the alley-way behind the apartments. He stopped to check if anybody was
back there with him, nobody was, fortunately for him and he took off down the
small road, dodging trash cans and jumping over boxes and discarded furniture
along the way. Now all he had to do was find Duo… easier said than done……
~ * * ~
Trowa…
‘Ring! Ring!’ I was suddenly startled out of my fitful rest by the
incessant ringing of the phone… why isn’t anybody answering it? Walking over to
the vid-phone in our room I look over to Quatre who
has slept through all the noise before I press the button to answer the call.
“Hello? Who is this…?” God, I even
sound like shit… I’m afraid to turn on the picture…. When the screen finally
pops up, a very frantic looking nurse is before it, hair all disheveled and
face flushed, this doesn’t look like it’s going to be a nice phone call.
“Trowa? Trowa
Barton?” The nurse’s voice was hoarse and
high-pitched, what could have gotten her into such a rile…?
Oh no, Wufei……
“Yes, that is I… how can I help
you?” I know this is about Wufei… what could have happened?
“Mister Barton,
there has been an… incident with Mister
Chang Wufei…
we need you to come to the hospital immediately.” I close my eyes in
frustration, I knew it, I knew he would do something
sooner or later.
“I’m on my way.” I close the vid-link before the nurse can say anymore. I start to turn
back around when I hear Quatre’s small voice calling
me; I look up to see two, innocent cerulean eyes staring at me in confusion.
“Trowa…? Who was that, is something
wrong? You look distressed…” I smile wryly at him and walk back over to the
bed, sitting down on it as softly as I could; Quatre watched me the whole time,
waiting patiently for my reply. I reach out to touch his face, but he meets my
hand half-way, rubbing against it affectionately…. So sweet.
When I stop rubbing his soft cheek with my thumb he looks at me questioningly
and I sigh.
“There is a… problem at the
hospital…” Quatre sits up fully, eyes wide now and worry written all over his
features.
“Wufei…?” I nod and continue,
“Yes, the nurse didn’t say what had
happened, she just told me that I needed to go to the
hospital immediately. I want you to stay here and make sure everything stays
calm… I don’t know why, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing Wufei and Duo very
soon.” Quatre blinks in confusion at my strange words—I’m even a little
confused myself, I just know I have this really weird feeling inside, about
them right now.
“But Trowa… I want to go with you.”
I smile at him and touch his face again.
“I know, but you have to stay here
in case they do come, and Heero still needs somebody to look after him, you
know all the servants are afraid of him. And I still need you to take it easy,
these last few days are the most crucial ones for your ribs to heal properly
and completely. Quatre looks down—pouting, but I know he understands.
“Okay… I guess I can wait.” I
almost want to laugh at how innocent he is; the way he pouts like a child and
mopes about not being able to go with me… I knew I loved him for a reason. I
lift his chin up, making his eyes meet mine; he stares at me with those wide
blue eyes of his, still pouting. I smile at him lovingly and close the space
between us, bringing my lips to those of his own soft
rose buds. We stay that way for a long while, tongues dancing for dominance and
lips crushed together like a tight seal… finally we have to part, both of us in
desperate need of air. Quatre now has a soft blush to his delicate skin and he
looks at me shyly from beneath his long lashes, he is so beautiful.
“I have to go now love, I shouldn’t
be long, but just in case, don’t wait up for me
alright?” I stare at him pointedly, knowing he’ll stay up no matter what I say.
He smiles slightly and looks away—embarrassed. I run my fingers through his
hair gently and stand up quickly, making my way out of our room and down the
hall and stairs to the front door just as fast. I’ve already grabbed my coat,
opened the door and am making my way down the steps before Henry
could even make it out of the kitchen to open the doors for me. I hop onto my
motorcycle that’s parked outside, push my helmet on as I’m starting it up and
taking off before the bike can even get warmed up. I hope Wufei is alright, I
just don’t want anything more to happen to any of us… we’ve all been through
enough for five life-times.
* * * *
I lay still for a few moments,
waiting for the sign that Trowa has left, finally I hear the door slam shut
downstairs. I sigh and lay back in bed—this is so exhausting, I hate lying in
bed all day and all night with nothing to do—I’m getting tired of just laying here! I wish I could have gone
with him, but he was right, I do need to stay in bed, and what if Wufei does come
back here with Duo… that would be so wonderful. I could just see Duo’s sweet,
cheery face smiling back at all of us now… especially at Heero…… Heero, I wish
he would speak with us.
Ever since Duo left… now he’s even
worse than he was during the war. We could hardly get four consecutive words
out of him then, now he won’t even whisper a single tiny syllable! It’s so
horrible, it’s like he’s a mute, but… this is different, he can talk, he just won’t—he refuses to even look at any one of us: Trowa, myself, the
servants, even the doctor…… Oh Duo, please come back to us, please come back to
Heero.
* * * *
Damn, of all the people to run away
and hide, it had to be Maxwell…. He’s the damned
hardest to find!!! ‘I may run and I may hide, but I never lie…’ Bleh! God I hated it when he said that! Damned street rat,
why does he have to be so good at hiding… wait a second……
~ * *
~
Wufei suddenly came to an abrupt
stop right in the middle of the crowded sidewalk… right in front of…… a church.
Wufei frowned, for some reason this massive church was drawing him to it. He
looked around for a moment, nothing but homeless people lining the streets and
walks, starving men digging through dumpsters and scrawny children begging the
passer-by for anything they could offer. Wufei felt sorry for those children…
Duo used to be one of them, he wondered if the orphan could possibly be around here
someplace.
Wufei spotted a tiny child staring
at him from underneath a mop of oily, impossibly dirty hair. It stood only a
few feet away from him, but Wufei couldn’t even tell what color
skin the child had, it was so dirty, but it had also began to get rather
dark since his ‘hunt’ began. The little child blinked up at Wufei innocently as
he slowly walked up to the scrawny thing. It just stood there, staring at him
with the utmost curiosity, blinking its large green eyes up at him. That
astonished Wufei the most—the eyes; how, out of all the mud and grime and filth
covering this child, could its eyes be so brilliant and lively?
Wufei smiled, This, he imagined, must have been what Duo looked like when he
was a child… Wufei’s smile widened at that thought,
the child blinked up at him, wondering why the strange man with dark skin was
smiling. Lost in his thoughts, Wufei didn’t register the tugging at his long
shirt until it became incessant, then he finally looked down to see the small
green-eyed child tugging at his clothing innocently. Wufei smiled warmly at the
little thing and bent down to pick the child up, Oh…! Bad idea…… Wufei mentally cursed himself as he lifted the
fairly light child, but with his injuries they made the child seem like a
thousand pounds to him.
Ignoring his protesting body, Wufei
slowly lifted the little child into his arms... strangely enough,
the child clung to him as if he were the little thing’s last life-support.
Wufei stood there for a moment, the small child clinging to his neck and waist,
not knowing what to do, but suddenly the little thing spoke, softly at first
but them it became bolder and looked Wufei directly in the eyes.
“Are yoo
an Angel?” Wufei almost laughed outright! Him
and angel!? Now that was something he never thought he would hear…. He composed
himself quickly though and tried to look as sincere at possible.
“N-no… no, I’m not Little One. What
made you say such a thing?” The child looked thoughtful for a moment then
looked back at the grand church that stood before them. As the child stared at
the building it said,
“Becose
there’s another one inside there…. He’s reelly smart
and nice—he gave me food and a blanket too!” Wufei almost dropped the child in
his arms, but he caught himself and stared at the child with complete
bewilderment.
“W-what did you say!? What does
this person look like, can you tell me?” The child nodded and smiled.
“He has reelly
pretty purpl eyes and rrreeeeeeeeellllyyyy
long hare! He wers all blak too!!” How, could this have happened, Wufei
counted himself the luckiest man alive at that moment,
what luck! That was definitely Duo the child spoke of, there was no doubting
it, not after the description the little child gave—nobody could mistake that!
Then the child spoke up again,
“C’mon! I’ll take yoo to him, he’s rite inside heer!”
The little thing wiggled its way out of Wufei’s arms
and grabbed his hand before it took off up the steps and into the church,
dragging Wufei behind it. When Wufei stumbled into the church, he found himself
gaping in open amazement at the grandeur of the place; to call it just a church was an insult, this was a
monstrous cathedral! Wufei pulled his
eyes away from the towering roof, catching himself
thinking how it was big enough to have stored all of their Gundams,
including Wing inside, with no problem. Wufei felt the relentless tugging again
and looked down at the child to find it pointing towards the front of the
cathedral whispering,
“C’mon! C’mon! He’s rite up heer!! C’mon!” Wufei smiled and picked the little thing up
into his arms again and carried the hyper child up to the front of the
cathedral, past all the pews and up to the giant crumbling statue of Mary
and Baby Jesus. Wufei just stared at it for a moment, an odd expression
crossing his features; he didn’t know what to think as he stared at the statue…
it meant nothing to him, of course, he was Chinese, not American—not Christian
or Catholic or any of those other religions fought over in this part of the
world… but he remembered that it meant something to Duo. This was Duo’s life;
it had been ever since he met that Sister Helen
and Father Maxwell.
A faint rustling and a small moan
startled Wufei out of his thoughts and he turned around to face a sleeping Duo
Maxwell upon the pew just before him, curled up in a tight ball, his black
jacket wound tightly around his shivering body, and, out of it all, that
beautiful mass of chestnut hair remained smooth and silky looking. Wufei
couldn’t help but stare, until the child tugged on his shirt again and squirmed
out of his arms once more. When the little child plopped to the ground though,
it woke Duo, shocking the boy into a waking, upright position, staring strait
ahead. Wufei froze and waited to see what Duo would do when he saw him, but Duo
seemed not to have seen Wufei, though he was staring right at the Asian man;
Duo just stared at nothing as if he was in a trance, then slowly reality came
back and Wufei could see the realization hit Duo as those tell-tale cobalt eyes
focused and glazed over like a pool of warm water had just been touched by the
icy cold fingers of Winter’s breath.
Wufei saw it right away—the hatred,
the unforgiving hurt and pain that he had engraved into those beautiful eyes.
He felt sick suddenly, how could he have done such a thing, why did he even
come here, this was wrong; he didn’t know now, if he could do this or not… but…
he had to try, even if he did feel like he was going keel over any second. Duo
slowly stood then, never taking his eyes away from Wufei; the gaze was so cold
Wufei could hardly stand it—it was worse than Heero’s
glare… Wufei looked away, turning his head down in shame, afraid to look Duo in
the eye any longer. Then the small child that had accompanied Wufei into the
cathedral jumped in front of Duo suddenly and began to hop up and down, smiling
and yelling,
“Hi Duo! I
saw him out ther and thot
he wus another Angel,
just like yoo!! And he askd
me about yoo and I told him yoo
wer in heer and yoo wer!!” Duo didn’t seem to
notice the child until he put an arm out to gently move the child to the side
and in a voice Wufei had never heard Duo speak in, he said,
“No, Ebon, he’s not an angel… he
should never be called something as precious as that……” It sent chills down Wufei’s spine, how Duo said those hateful words…. Wufei
didn’t blame him in the least though; he deserved everything Duo threw at him.
The little child, Ebon, stared up at Duo in confusion tilting his head to the
side, but smiled and said,
“Oh I get it! He’s more important
than a Angel huh?! He’s
a God or something big like that!?” Duo’s frown deepened, but Ebon didn’t see
it—Wufei did.
“Yeah… that’s it, a god…. Why don’t
you go find something to do Ebon, I’ll be out in a few minutes… I just have to
take care of some things here…” Ebon jumped up and down happily and shouted,
“Okay!” and skipped off down the isle and out the enormous doors. Wufei watched
the little boy disappear into the darkness beyond, then turned his attention
back to Duo, who’s focus hadn’t even faltered once.
Wufei swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat and took a deep breath,
preparing for what was to come. He knew this wasn’t going to end the way he
wanted it to; he just hoped Duo would let him take him back to Heero…… back to
where he belonged.
~tbc~
[1] on’na
roughly means woman, in Japanese. It’s a crude word to be used as an insult to
a woman, as if speaking to them like they were stupid. This seemingly, is Wufei’s favorite word to use when he’s speaking to any of
the feminine kind… for some reason he thinks them inferior… *sarcastic tone
there—glares at Wufei*
Wufei: What are you glaring at, stupid on’na!
-… See, what’d I tell you…
Wufei: Whatever…
-You sound like Squall….
Wufei: *glares*
[2] 10 feet!?! Why did I mention this one? Because you all were probably thinking, “Ten feet!?!?!?!
That’s ALL!!?!” Well guess what, ten feet is a hell of a lot farther than most
might think—I know, I measured it!^_^
-Shut up!
[3] Bougainvillea and Asian Lily: in case any of you were
wondering what these were, they’re a type of ‘Asian’ plant. I did my research
to try and find as many species of ‘Asian’ plants as I could and these were
only two of many that exist. Of course, obviously with the Lily…
duh *roles eyes*
Wufei: *lowers his finger and slowly closes his mouth*
-Now that I’m done with all the necessities, I want to stop
a minute and thank my wonderful muses, since they’ve done so well in this fic for me…
Wufei: *grumbles* Thank!? Yeah, you had better be thanking
me you stupid on’na! I’ve taken six broken ribs a
black eye, and probably worse because of your psychotic mind!
Wufei: *growls*
-*eye twitches… starts backing away slowly*
Quatre: Hey! Don’t forget about me! I’m stuck in bed with a
broken rib because of you two!
Wufei: ME!?!?!
-Oh no, here we go…
Wufei: What the hell—!! What did I do!? Yuy’s
the one that elbowed you in the chest—and that never would have happened if you
hadn’t let that jerk jump me like he did!
Quatre: ME!?!?!
-Boys, boys…
Trowa: *picks Quatre up into his arms as Wufei and Quatre
start to get violent* Calm down you two, this isn’t anybody’s fault except his...
-*cowers back as the three boys glare at writer* Eep!
Duo: Hey! When do I get to be back in this story! I wanna tell my part!!! I haven’t been in it for like the
last thirty pages! When the hell are you gonna bring
me back damn it!!?!
-It hasn’t been THAT long……! Okay, well maybe it has, but,
didn’t you just come in this last part??? *raises eyebrow snobbishly*
Heero: Quit your complaining baka!
I’ve only been in it like three times and then I didn’t even get to talk!! When
do I get my chance to speak MY mind damn it!!? I want the chance to lay the
smack-down on Chang too!!
*everyone stares at Heero for a moment, eyes twitching*
Duo: Aaaaaaaaannnyyyyyhow! What do
you plan to do???? Huhhuhhuhhuh!?!?!?!?! I’m still
waiting to be found! And when do I get to have some hot steamy sex with Hee-chan here!?!?!?!
-*blinks at his stupidity*
Duo: Awww, but Hee-chan…
*starts to rub his body seductively against Heero’s.
Everybody’s eyes widen and Wufei’s nose begins to
bleed profusely* You know you want me rreeeeeaaaal bad…
Heero: *growls and pounces on Duo right there, in front of
everyone and they currently proceed to fuck each other like rabid weasels*
-Yeah… Well, uhm, while they’re
*cough* busy… I think I’ll just go over here…… BYE!!!! *takes off before any of
the other boys can see*
