The hours past as weeks in the darkness as far as Duo was concerned. He had memorized the layout of his cell, groping each slick stone a hundred times. He’d sung every song he could remember, and had even carried on conversations with himself for the sake of hearing a voice echo of the walls. It didn’t help much. Even as he tried to keep his spirit intact, his whole world had become nothing but the chill of darkness and the silence that went with it.

Everything had decended into nothing, punctuated by sharp rasp of metal grinding over metal when the small panel slid back and a tray of food was shoved through; then darkness again. He managed to keep track of the days by meal times at first, biding his time and wondering when the demon that had saved him once would return to rescue him once more. As the days or weeks rolled on vailed in that dark quiet however, Duo slowly stopped waiting. He simply sat against the far wall, letting his mind wander far from his current predicament.

His demon guard began to get suspicious when the annoying string of babble ceased on the fourth day. He began to worry on the sixth as he pulled the third tray of untouched food back throught the small slot. The demon had heard stories at how fast a human’s spirit could be broken, but had never given it much thought. Idly wondering what the creature had done to deserve the solitary confinement rather than the usual quick death. He wasn’t stupid enough to question Master Zechs’ orders however, especially when the man’s temper was as sour as it appeared while he spat the orders. The human was unlucky for sure.

Much to Quatre’s distress, it had taken Wufei a full three days to wake up from his attempts at binding the human. The little blonde had nearly exhausted himself trying restore even a fraction of the princes lost power, and nearly cried when the dark eyes finally cracked open. Heero and Wufei had to litteraly restrain him from tackling Wufei and smothering the life right back out of him.

With Quatre finally subdued in Trowa’s firm embrace, the three demons were able to turn their attention back to Wufei who was currently trying find his voice.

“Wh.. where is he?” It wasn’t difficult to assume who Wufei was talking about.

“He’s safe.” Heero’s clipped response didn’t comfort the prince at all.
“I.. need to go to him...” Wufei struggled to sit up, his head spinning and his body weak.

“You’re not going anywhere until I say so!” Quatre flailed in Trowa’s arms, not about to let his hard work at reviving the young demon end with him collapsing again.

Heero was by Wufei’s side in the blink of an eye, gently holding the prince down as if he were a child. The extent of Wufei’s weakness was startling, and flashed a worried glance at his fellow guard.

“Then bring him to me... please...” Wufei’s voice was small, so unlike his usual arrogant and demanding timber. It was unnerving.

“You’re not well Master...We can discuss brining him to you when your strength returns, until then rest easy knowing he’s safe...”

The three demons felt a pang of fear in their bellies as Wufei slipped unconscious yet again, murmuring Duo’s name in a fitfull sleep.

Four days passed, and Wufei was not getting better. If anything the Demon was getting worse. Wracked by cold sweats and nasea, Wufei was fast becoming delerious, calling for his human, demanding and trying to fight off Heero and Trowa to go find Duo himself. Quatre was beside himself, unable to find what was wrong no matter how many times he searched the medical texts, and terrified that he might not be able to help him. It was beginning to seem like the binding was not successful after all.

The tenth day after the backwards binding had been preformed, and Quatre feared the worst. The prince was beyond his help. No matter how many times he used his powers to search Wufei or sickness or injury, he came up empty handed. There was nothing physically wrong with the prince, yet he seemed to die a little more each day. Quatre was a nervous wreck, refusing to leave the infirmary and snapping at anything and everything. Even Trowa.

“He’s dying.. the prince is slipping between my fingers. I may as well be a butcher, I have no right to call myself a healer...” Quatre’s voice trembled, from hysteria and exhaustion combined.

“You should sleep Quatre.. You’re no good to anyone falling asleep on your feet...” Trowa kept his own voice low and calm, willing his mate to do the same. He could feel the tension from Quatre, his normally happy demenor ready to shatter at any second.

“I must have done something wrong...I must have.. Maybe that first night, when wufei was injured.. perhaps... no no, just simple mending....” He was talking to himself, hardly aware of his mates quiet pressense. The muttering was out of character. He rambled and talked to himself, but never muttered. “Maybe the human.. I wonder... never healed a human before.. .”

“Quatre.. you’re not well. I want you to rest....” Trowa stood, worry for his own mate overriding his sense of duty. Even if the prince was dying, there was no way he was going to let Quatre follow suit. “Quatre?”

“I’m so stupid... some healer I am... stupid stupid stupid...I wonder...”

“Quatre...”

“Whaddif..hmmm... maybe, no... stupidstupidstupid...” Quatre paced the infirmary with small, uneven steps, all the while muttering.

The low muttering finally broght an end to Trowa’s patience. It was time for him to look after his own. Before the blonde could utter another word, Trowa wove the darkness around him, attacking his senses with ease. Quatre was too tired to fight off the magic, falling under the spell as if he was a mortal himself. Trowa caught him as he collapsed mid shuffle, unable to keep the worry from his eyes. He shifted through the saddows, appearing in their chamber a moment later to deposit his mate on the soft linens for a much needed sleep.

He knew Quatre would skin him alive when he finally woke. His future looked bleak for sure, and unless Wufei was well on the way to recovery by the time his little one woke, Trowa wasn’t sure if he’d ever be forgiven.

With the healer unwillingly resting, Trowa sat on the bench near the bed and lost himself in thought. There was something they were missing, something simple and obvious, staring them right in the face. Nothing was wrong with Wufei; quatre had found as much, but he grew sicker by the day regardless. The human was safe and accounted for, with nothing out of the ordinary according to his guard. Yet something...something wasn’t adding up.

The longer he thought, the more uneasy he became. He was starting to understand what was eating at his mate. If Wufei was fine, and Duo was fine, there should be no problems. More frustrated than he could remember being in his entire life, Trowa stood and let out long sigh. Unable to continue doing nothing, Trowa decided to revisit each detail of the puzzle, starting with the human.

When he shifted from the shaddows, the guard nearly fell out of his chair; he had clearly not been expecting visitors.

“Sir! I uh.. I have orders Master Trowa.. no one but Master Trieze or Zechs is allowed...” The young demon mustered his strength in a sad attempt at intimidation as he spoke, but Trowa was not to be detered.

“Master Wufei needs to know how the prisoner is fairing.”

“He’s.. I mean that is... Sir I’m not to tell anything to anyone not even you Sir..” The poor guard was clearly flustered, finding it difficult to defy Trowa’s rank.

Trowa merely stared from below his sheild of cinnamon bangs, letting the man flail as he used the darkness to search out the human. His eyes narrowed as he caught the life force, and the guard fell silent as Trowa’s mood darkened. There was barely anything coming from the cell; a fact that suddenly explained alot. He moved faster than the demon could follow, taking the keys and opening the door to the cell before the other knew what was happening.

Ignoring the sputtering and distressed plea’s from the guard, Trowa peered into the darkness at the huddled form lying in the corner.

“What’s wrong with him?”

“You’re not allowed..”

“Whats WRONG.” Trowa felt his temper flare, silencing all protest from the young demon.
“N..nothing sir... The prisoner is behaving as to be expected.”

“What precautions are being taken to maintain his well being?”

“His wellbe... what? He’s given a tray twice a day.. water.. not that he really needs or wants it...I’m sorry Sir I don’t understand. Why would we worry about the prisoners well being? His confinement was to be complete so I don’t understand what precautions you think..”

“Solitary confinement?” Suddenly Trowa understood. The peices were coming together.

“Yes sir.”

”And let me guess. He’s been like this for around 6 days.“

“y...yes sir?.. how did...”

Trowa knelt by Duo, trying to get a responce from the blank eyes before scooping him into his arms.It all made sense now; Duo had given up. His spirit was crumbling and Wufei was paying for it. “I’m taking him to the infermary. See that Master Trieze is informed immediately.”

With that Trowa shifted into the shaddows, leaving the young guard to panic on his own.
