-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A gentle breeze caressed his skin, ruffling his bangs ever so slightly before allowing them to fall back into place. Birds chirped in a nearby tree and the sun warmed his skin.
These were the first things Goku became aware of as consciousness slowly crept back to him, drawing him out of the deep artificial sleep he’d been forced into some time before.
“Wake up, baka! Kami, only you could continue sleeping after crash landing in a hunk of metal!”
Vegeta.
Goku’s brow twitched in irritation before he allowed himself to open his eyes. He squinted against the sunlight that drifted into the space ship, blocked slightly by the prince’s body.
“Nice to see you too.” the younger man mumbled as he placed his palm flat on Vegeta’s face and pushed the older man away. He slowly climbed to his feet and stretched his sore muscles. With the flick of his tail, Goku strode past the irritated prince and stepped outside.
“This looks like Earth.”
Vegeta, who had also moved out of the ship, smirked as he folded his arms over his chest.
“That’s because it is Earth.”
Goku frowned in confusion. “How can that be? I put completely random coordinates into the ship. If the directions were for Earth, why did it put me to sleep?”
“Because that’s what I programmed it to do.”
“But I didn’t even tell you I was leaving!”
Vegeta was still smirking. “Just goes to show how well I know you.”
The younger man huffed and looked back at the ship behind him. “Well how long was I in space for?”
“A couple months.”
Silence. “......So.... I was just circling the Earth for two months?!”
Vegeta nodded as he examined his fingernails through his gloves. “Pretty much.”
“Why?!”
“I don’t know. You’re the one who launched the ship, baka.”
“But YOU programmed it to do that!”
“Yes.”
“WHY?!” Goku yelled, nearly tugging at his hair in frustration. He hated it when the prince toyed with him.
Vegeta, calm as ever, casually pointed to something behind his mate.
Goku raised an eyebrow and slowly turned around, screeching in horror before spinning back around to face the prince.
“What are they doing here?” he nearly whispered, clearly in shock.
And who wouldn’t be in shock when your old enemies Turles, Nappa, Radditz, and even Brolli make a sudden and unexpected appearance?
“I made some wishes while you were gone.” Vegeta explained as he watched his mate’s fluffed up tail lash back and forth. It appeared to have healed nicely, also regaining its original healthy sheen.
“That’s why you kept me off planet and asleep? So you could gather the dragonballs?”
“Exactly. I gathered the dragonballs, wished myself to Planet Namek, gathered THOSE dragonballs, threatened a Namekian, called the dragon, forced the Namekian to wish back whichever Saiyajins hadn’t been reincarnated, wished for Brolli to be SANE once I saw he was back, wished myself and the other Saiyajins back to Earth, then used my remaining wish from a very pissed off Shenlong to bring your ship back here. And here we are.”
“.....I see...” Goku said as he eyed the downright giddy prince. “But why are WE here?” he asked as he gestured toward the other Saiyajins.
Vegeta’s expression became one of complete seriousness. “Saiyajins naturally live in packs, Kakarotto. Now we have a pack.”
“Why do we suddenly need a pack?” the younger man asked as he glanced back at the others. He was thoroughly confused and was trying to decide whether or not he should be pissed.
Vegeta gently grasped Goku's chin and turned his head so their eyes met. “I need them so what happened to you doesn’t happen again. In Saiyajin culture, packs protect their own with their lives. Without others of our kind, my instinct to protect my mate, the last of my people, amongst a planet full of aliens, became so overwhelming that I ended up hurting you instead. Now with other Saiyajins, I should be stimulated enough that my body will adjust and bring my hormone levels back to where they should have always been. You don’t have to worry about me losing control anymore.”
Silence settled as eye contact was kept between the two Saiyajins.
Then, much to Vegeta’s surprise, Goku's eye twitched and he and pushed his hand away. “I don’t have to worry? You wish back four Saiyajins who at one point wanted nothing more than to kill me, TWO of which I killed myself.... AND YOU DON’T WANT ME TO WORRY?!”
Sweat drops all around.
Vegeta huffed and folded his arms against his chest again, turning his head to the side slightly.
“Well, it sounds bad when you put it THAT way.”
“It’s bad when you put it ANY way!” Goku shot back, also folding his arms in a huff.
“Children.” Radditz muttered sarcastically.
“If it means anything, we won’t try to kill you this time.” Turles offered.
“Ohhhhhhh, I feel MUCH better!” Goku said happily... in a sarcastic kind of way.
“Baka! At least TRY it for awhile! If you can’t get comfortable living with your attempted killers, then we’ll send them back to hell!” Vegeta snapped.
“I don’t like that idea...” Brolli said.
Goku looked at him in surprise. “You spoke.”
“Yes.”
“In a sentence.”
“I tend to do that, yes.”
“Not before. Before all you shouted was “KAKAROTTO, DIE! Or, DIE, KAKAROTTO! ... Or some variation of your murderous intentions.” Goku said as his tail flicked behind him.
Brolli shrugged. “I’ve read a lot of books since then.”
“You read?”
The taller Saiyajin rolled his eyes. “Yeah, and I can balance a ball on my nose too.”
“.......Can I see?”
For miles around, every creature plummeted to the ground in a classic anime fall-over.
Several minutes later, Vegeta growled as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Kami... What have I done?!”
Meanwhile, Turles was looking between Goku and Vegeta curiously... then he made the mistake of opening his mouth. “Does this mean I get to have sex with one of you? Or both?”
Immediately, the dark skinned Saiyajin face-planted into the ground due to Goku’s fist descending upon his head.
“What the hell kind of question is that?!” Goku cried as he spun to face Vegeta, who, much to his surprise, was rubbing his chin and staring off into space with a hentai grin on his face.
“..... VEGETA!”
----------------------------------------------------------------
Kami, how he wished it was all a nightmare... But it wasn’t. Goku was sure of that after pinching himself for the fifteenth time that day.
The young Saiyajin had finally settled himself upon the couch in the living room, which was located in the middle of his and Vegeta’s spacious house. From there, he could keep an eye on the activity around him. He sat near the armrest of the couch with his legs pulled up to his body; his tail and arms securely wrapped around them. From his perch, he watched as the other Saiyajins adjusted and familiarized themselves with their new home, each already having claimed a bedroom. It made Goku wonder if Vegeta had been planning on bringing back the others all along, since he'd insisted on the extra space when they’d selected their Capsule home.
Goku was suddenly jolted from his thoughts when the couch sank beside him. Raditz had settled himself there comfortably. His eyes widened, surprised that he hadn’t even noticed his approach while lost in his thoughts.
Tension filled the air between the siblings as Raditz spoke. “Since we’re going to be living together now, I might as well clear the air between us, neh?”
Goku’s brow creased as he glared at the man from the corner of his eye. “You can start by moving away a little. You’re crowding me.”
A chuckle. “I don’t remember you being so cold the last time we met.”
His younger brother’s eyes returned to the carpet. “I’ve been through a lot since then.”
Goku heard a deep sigh before he suddenly found himself crushed against a strong chest, held there by two brawny arms. His tail immediately fluffed as he prepared to pull away, but the embrace tightened as Raditz crooned softly.
“Be still. Vegeta told us what happened.”
Goku froze as he felt his stomach jump into his throat. Why was he suddenly afraid? Was he afraid of what his brother would think of him? Did he actually care?
“Our Prince did what his instincts told him to; and that was to protect his mate from all threats. He doesn’t trust humans, and he felt you trusted them too much. Vegeta was afraid they’d betray you or even harm you to separate the two of you. You’re aware they don’t all approve of your relationship with him?”
Raditz felt a slight nod of his tense brother’s head; and so he continued.
“In Saiyajin society, we lived in packs and protected our own from others. Frequently a certain member of a pack would be desired by others, and there was always the risk of kidnapping. That would be like losing a family member; even if the bloodline wasn’t really there. You’re all Vegeta had, Kakarotto. You must know that. He was blinded by the need to keep you safe from the other ‘packs’, who obviously wanted to snatch you away. Without his own pack to keep an eye out, he had to go to extreme measures... which is why he did what he did. I'm not saying he went about it correctly, but Vegeta was young and inexperienced when our home was destroyed. He had nothing to guide him except for his instincts, and without anyone to teach him the limits, he lost control. It was like a child trying to drive one of those vehicles I've seen on this planet. They know the basics, but without anyone to teach them how to do it properly, eventually they crash and burn.”
Goku swallowed the lump forming in his throat as he rested his forehead against his brother’s chest, finally relaxing a bit. It made sense... in a bizarre Saiyajin kind of way. But he still wasn’t comfortable with this ‘pack’ thing.
As if on cue, Buroli appeared in the room and headed for the stairs, casting Goku a strange and unsettling look before he moved out of sight again.
The orange-clad Saiyajin pushed against Raditz’s chest until he could lean back enough to look into the larger man’s eyes. “I don’t trust Buroli. His madness may have been wished away, but his power is off the charts and I know he still hates me.”
The older Saiyajin nodded, glancing toward the stairs. “Yes. Vegeta never even considered that Buroli may be wished back... But when he was, he made the first wish that came to mind. I suppose he couldn’t bring himself to wish away a full blooded Saiyajin when there are already so few of us left.”
Raditz could see that his brother was still uneasy, and so he wound his tail around Goku’s, electing a sigh of comfort from the younger man, who once again leaned against his chest. He purred in a soothing manner, grinning when he felt Goku’s entire body relax.
----------------------------------------------------
Later that week, Vegeta had decided that they would all camp in the wilderness, hoping to strengthen the pack as a whole; so there they all sat, under the stars with only the moon and fire’s light to warm them.
Goku found himself seeking the company of Raditz as opposed to his mate, whom he still held some fear and resentment toward. That sort of thing couldn’t be forgotten so easily. And while Raditz enjoyed the sibling bond that was quickly forming between them, Vegeta was less than thrilled with the lack of attention from his mate. He was trying his best to stay in control, however, and having additional pack members appeared to be easing his stress levels.
The prince growled under his breath as he tossed away a bone he’d been using to clean his teeth, belonging to a rabbit he’d snacked on earlier. He stood.
“It’s getting late. If any of you want to eat, I suggest we go hunting. Whoever makes the biggest kill gets to eat first.”
Smirks graced the lips of the others as the challenge was put forth, and the Saiyajins needed no further encouragement as they all swiftly disappeared into the darkness.
------------------------------------------------------------
Goku’s tail slowly swished back and forth behind him as he steadily eyed his prize from where he was crouched, hidden by the foliage. Only a few yards away, the largest grizzly he’d ever seen was feeding on a kill of its own, completely unaware that he was now prey. He could have hunted for larger game, a dinosaur perhaps, but this was far more challenging. Besides, no one would know if he ate this kill alone and brought something else back for the others, right?
Goku crouched closer to the ground and coiled his muscles, preparing to launch; but before he could pounce, the grizzly unexpectantly bolted. The Saiyajin had no time to wonder what went wrong before he suddenly found himself pinned beneath the weight of a heavier and larger body. His gasp of surprise was muffled as an arm appeared in front of his face and a hand closed over his mouth, silencing him effectively.
Goku’s wide eyes moved to the side as a warm breath tickled his cheek, and he soon became all too aware of exactly who was on top of him when a lock of purplish-black hair fell into his line of sight.
Buroli.
Goku immediately attempted to rise, but with a harsh growl and added force, he was shoved back into the ground beneath him. The smaller Saiyajin breathed heavily through his nose and his heart pounded in his chest as he felt Buroli’s free hand swiftly move up and down his side, almost seductively caressing him before moving to harshly fist in his hair, yanking his head back roughly. Kami, he hated it when people pulled his hair.
Goku shivered as a wet tongue slid across his cheekbone.
“Understand this, Kakarotto. I truly do hate you... But I am not blind to beauty and I am not without lust.”
To further prove his point, the larger Saiyajin ground his arousal against the trapped man’s backside.
“There are privileges to certain pack members when it comes to those below them... And I do believe you are below me, Kakarotto.” Buroli said with a smirk as he crushed the smaller man beneath him.
Goku, on the verge of hyperventilating, finally did what came naturally to him; he gathered his power. For the first time in months, he ascended to a Super Saiyajin, and with an added burst of power, he threw his attacker off of him.
Goku quickly jumped to his feet and spun to face his enemy... But all that stood before him were trees.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Vegeta smirked victoriously as he grabbed hold of the large tail of his prey and turned to head back to camp, though before he could even take a step, Goku appeared in front of him. He was breathing heavily and the front of his gi was covered in dirt.
They stared at each other in silence for a brief moment before the younger man moved forward and wrapped his arms around the stunned prince.
Vegeta quickly returned the embrace, pulling his mate tightly against him. He buried his nose in the other Saiyajin’s neck and inhaled deeply. His eyes snapped open as he picked up Buroli’s scent. A growl rumbled deep in his throat as he gently stroked Goku’s hair, hoping to calm his shivering companion.
It was time to set some rules within his pack.
-------------------------------------------------------
The temperature had dropped drastically in the couple of hours after the Saiyajins had hunted, and as a result, the pack had relocated themselves to a cave they’d found further into the forest. A fire crackled within, lighting the stone walls while casting dark shadows at the same time.
Finished with his meal and no longer interested in the chit chat going on amongst the others, Goku had moved a little further into the cave to escape most of the fire’s light and settled down for the night, turning his back to the others as he lay on his side. His tail tightly wrapped around his own thigh as he stared at the stone wall ahead of him with a frown.
Earlier, when he and Vegeta returned to camp with their kills, his mate had immediately gone after Buroli, nearly tearing out the throat of the unprepared Saiyajin as his temper soared out of control. Only the quick response of the others as they pulled the snarling prince off of the larger Saiyajin had saved Buroli.
And naturally, an explanation was in order.
That was when Vegeta had set up the rules... which had thoroughly embarrassed Goku to no end. The prince had warned that no one was to touch HIS mate unless told otherwise, and then he went into graphic detail of what would happen to anyone who dared break this rule.
At that point, Goku was gritting his teeth in barely contained frustration. He was a warrior, a stronger and better warrior than the other Saiyajins, with the exception of Buroli and possibly his own mate, and yet, there was Vegeta, scolding those who dare even lay an eye on him; like a mother who was confronting her child’s bully.
True, he’d gone to the prince after the incident with Buroli that night, and true, he’d sought comfort in his arms, but he didn’t ask for protection. He could do that himself and was tired of being made to feel like he wasn’t capable of looking after himself.
Goku’s eyes shifted to the side as the roar of laughter reached his ears. He huffed in annoyance. They were probably laughing at him. Fine. Most people did anyway and he wasn’t going to start caring now.
“Kakarotto, you’re not even trying to get along with the others. We’ll never form a pack bond at this rate.”
Goku frowned and curled into a tighter ball stubbornly. “I never planned on trying.”
A snort. “Kami, you sound like a child.”
The younger Saiyajin growled under his breath. “Well, you made me feel like one tonight, so why not sound like one too?”
Vegeta raised an eyebrow at his mate, whose back was still turned to him. “What are you talking about?”
"I didn’t need you to tell them to stay away! You made me feel like a complete weakling, Vegeta!”
The prince looked surprised when Goku finally glared back at him over his shoulder. “I thought you wanted me to say something.”
The other man sat up and turned to face his mate. “Since when have you ever cared about what I wanted?!”
Vegeta opened his mouth to speak, but was immediately cut off.
“Did you really think I WANTED you to break my tail and take away my ki? Do you think I WANTED you to beat me? Rape me? Imprison me in my own house? Do you think I WANTED you to wish back Buroli, a Saiyajin who would love nothing more to kill me; Turles, a Saiyajin who I killed to save Earth, Radditz, a brother who I helped kill in order to save my son; and Nappa, a Saiyajin who was fully prepared to kill me as well until you ended up killing him instead?!!”
At this point, the cave’s occupants had fallen silent, and all eyes were resting on the one man who was now yelling at the prince. Even the crackling fire seemed to quiet down.
“Did you just think, ‘Oh, I’m going to do all this to make Kakarotto happy’? BULLSHIT, VEGETA!”
Vegeta nearly jumped as Goku’s voice echoed off the cave walls.
“You did it because YOU felt insecure! YOU were the BAKA who couldn’t see that I loved you just the way you were and I never planned on leaving you for anyone or anything! YOU were the one who wished for more Saiyajins because YOU wanted a kingdom to rule over again! None of this was for me, it was all for YOU, Vegeta! It’s always about YOU! High and mighty Vegeta! Well, FUCK YOU!”
Vegeta did flinch then. He never thought he’d hear those words from his mate’s mouth, and never directed at him. He was so stunned that he didn’t even make a move to stop Goku as the younger man stood and stormed from the cave. All this time and he’d finally released the anger he’d kept pent up. It kind of made the prince wonder why he was still in one piece.
Several tense moments ticked by before Vegeta had the courage to glance over at the others, who all immediately looked in other directions. Had he really been that selfish? He was beginning to think so. The pack gave HIM comfort... though considering Kakarotto’s past with the bunch, he was a fool to think for one second his mate would feel comfortable with them. And Kakarotto had even said that Bulma had created an injection that could help him get a grip on his out of control hormones.
He WAS a baka.
But now what? What the hell was he supposed to do with four Saiyajins? He couldn’t just wish them back to hell... or send them there himself. On the other hand, he’d seen his mate interacting with Radditz, so there was still a chance Kakarotto would accept the others... or at the very least his own brother. Turles and Nappa seemed eager enough to form a pack... So there was one problem...
Buroli.
He’d never intended for ‘that’ particular Saiyajin to return, but since he had, he was the largest source of controversy.
Vegeta’s eyes settled on the large man in question, and steely black eyes met his own without hesitation. In fact, Buroli even had a smug smirk on his face and his tail flicked back and forth in a taunting manner.
The prince’s lip curled into a snarl. The bastard was mocking him. He had no respect for his prince, and it was obvious his warning about keeping away from Kakarotto went in one ear and out the other. He should have wished his power away rather than his insanity. He could deal with a crazy Saiyajin in a straight jacket.
He was trouble. How does one deal with a problem that just won’t go away?
Vegeta’s eye twitched as Buroli’s smirk widened. He knew they were cautious of him, and he was loving every second. Kakarotto was right. He couldn’t be trusted.
Looks like he’d be sleeping with one eye open tonight.
-------------------------------------------------------
He didn’t recall falling asleep, but Vegeta knew he’d drifted off when he was awoken by the echoing footsteps of someone approaching his location. The prince was immediately on the alert and his head snapped up in order to spy the intruder.
“Kakarotto?”
The younger Saiyajin didn’t answer, just continued his approach with an unreadable expression upon his face before he finally sat down a little ways from his mate and leaned back against the stone wall.
Vegeta stayed silent for a moment, quietly observing that Goku hadn’t even bothered to look at him since he’d entered the cave.
“I thought you’d be on the other side of the planet by now, Kakarotto.”
Goku merely shrugged and closed his eyes. “Just needed a couple hours to cool off. Besides, I wouldn’t leave you with Buroli... no matter how tempting the idea may be.”
Silence lingered between the two Saiyajins; silence that was only interrupted by the chirping of crickets outside the cave.
“I agree with you, you know.” Vegeta said in a low voice.
“Hm?”
“....I’m a baka.”
Goku’s eyes snapped open and he quickly turned to meet those of his mate’s. Even in the darkness, Vegeta could see the surprise sparkling within the onyx depths.
“I’ve been selfish and insecure.” the prince continued. He kept his voice low however, for this was for Goku’s ears only.
“I’ve lost a lot in my life, Kakarotto. My planet, my people, my childhood, my freedom even. I had nothing before you. Nothing at all. I never experienced true happiness until the day you agreed to be my mate, Kakarotto, but I still had my insecurities... I’d just been able to control them until my tail regenerated. The high levels of testosterone it produced were too much, and like a teenager throwing a temper tantrum, I just let my emotions control my actions.”
Vegeta paused for a moment, snorting bitterly. “What’s the stupid human saying? ‘You always hurt the ones you love’. I suppose I love you too much, neh?”
Goku sat there, completely at a loss for words... and he was pretty sure his jaw was hanging open too. He knew the prince loved him... well, he’d been pretty sure, but he’d never heard the older man say it before. It sounded strange. Nice, but strange.
He hadn’t thought of anything to say before Vegeta continued.
“As for wishing back Radditz and the others... I suppose that was more for me than you. I wanted a piece of my past back, Kakarotto. There’s safety in numbers in my mind, and though you’ve relied on your own strength all your life, I have not. If not for the support of Nappa and Radditz during my time with Frieza, I would have died long ago. I probably would have taken my own life.”
Goku, needless to say, was shocked by what he’d just heard. He’d always had the impression that Vegeta was a loner; that he didn’t like or need the help of others. Everything he’d just heard contradicted everything he ‘thought’ he knew about his mate.
The younger man’s shoulders slumped as a feeling of guilt suddenly washed over him. He hadn’t realized how little he knew about the prince. All this time he’d been convincing himself that Vegeta was a bad mate, and in reality, he wasn’t exactly the perfect mate himself.
“I’m sorry, Vegeta...”
The older man raised an eyebrow. “What for?”
Goku hesitated for a moment before answering, suddenly feeling very foolish for his earlier outburst. “I shouldn’t have shouted at you earlier... especially not in front of the others. I should have tried to understand your viewpoint before I jumped to conclusions...”
Vegeta grinned as he watched his mate nervously fiddle with a loose thread on his boot’s lace. “Well, it’s not like I didn’t deserve it. I have indeed been a baka lately.”
This earned him a small smile from Goku, though he could hardly tell in the low light.
“I’ll try to accept them...” Goku finally said as he glanced over at the sleeping members of their pack. “But Buroli...”
Vegeta frowned as his eyes settled on the sleeping warrior. “We’ll figure out something, Kakarotto. Just keep your guard up for now.”
The prince heard more than he saw his mate shifting to move beside him, so he was a little surprised when he felt Goku’s tail wrap around his bicep. The older man’s lips curled into a soft smile. The younger Saiyajin hadn't allowed him to touch his tail since they were reunited, obviously not trusting Vegeta after he'd broken it not once, but three times. Vegeta winced at the memory. The first time he'd broken his mate's tail, he'd done it on purpose. The other two times had been accidental and had occurred during... a rape.
The prince closed his eyes in shame before shifting closer to the other Saiyajin and gently pulling him against his chest. Goku was hesitant, but he slowly relaxed and eventually tucked his head beneath Vegeta's chin. The older man inhaled the scent of his lover's hair and nuzzled his nose into the soft locks. This was also new. Kakarotto hadn't allowed him to run his fingers through his hair either, something he used to love when they first became mates. He'd caused pain that way one too many times later on though.
Vegeta settled himself into a more comfortable position and purred deep in his chest as he felt Kakarotto's arms wrap around him. He’d missed this.
