So . . . It was brought to my attention that I hadn't updated to the latest chapter here (was updated on 1x2ML under the same pen name though!). I am still working on this and a couple of other stories as well - But RL and health issues having been kicking my butt! Reviews are always loved!
AN: *Titler = Title + Er* :)
“Then what am I to call you?” Heero asked.
“You could try my name?” Duo replied gently, keeping his eyes locked with Heero’s.
“That would not be proper,” said Heero, dropping his eyes once more.
“Damn propriety, and damn society! Heero, please! I know four years is a long time,” Duo started, but stopped when he noticed that the shimmering in Heero’s eyes.
“Why didn’t you come back or even write?” Heero whispered. He shifted his feet and the chains still binding them clattered together. “I waited. You never came back. You never wrote.”
It had never even entered Duo’s mind that Heero would not know that he was forbidden from going back to Lord Jay’s. He had always assumed that Heero would have been informed in one way or another, or would have known in his heart that Duo wouldn’t just abandon him.
“Heero? Please sit,” Duo requested quietly. He hadn’t known that he would have to explain what had happened, but once Heero heard, he knew that he would understand. And those shackles had to go, so Duo felt that he might as well take care of that at the same time.
“I tried to contact you,” he began once Heero sat down in one of the chairs by the fireplace, and Duo kneeled on the floor in front of him.
“But,”
“Wait. I want you to listen.” Duo took a key from his pocket and gently raised one of Heero’s feet into his lap. “I don’t know how my father found out about that last day I was there. I have to assume someone was keeping an eye on us for some reason or another and that they reported it to Lord Jay and then it was reported to my father.” One manacle fell off, and Duo placed that foot on the ground and lifted the other. “I was forbidden to go back, to try and contact you in anyway. Not that I listened.” He grinned up and Heero, and Heero found himself smiling a little back. The manacle on his other ankle fell off and Duo reached up and grabbed a jar from a small side table. Upon it being opened, Heero saw it was a salve and Duo scooped some out and began to rub it into the raw spots created by the chains.
“I tried to come and see you myself a couple of times at first. I ended up with a few cracked ribs from falling off the privacy wall on the last time that I tried. Incidentally, that was the furthest in that I had gotten in my attempts. Jay’s guards were really good.”
“Odin and I trained them,” Heero offered quietly, looking into Duo’s eyes from under his eyelashes.
“Well,” Duo chuckled. “That explains why they were so difficult to get around! I then tried to get letters and notes through, sending some of the slaves and servants around the palace to get them to you, but they all came back to me, saying that they had failed to contact you. I even sent WuFei shortly after he arrived, one of the guard captains here, and even he couldn’t get in – and that man can talk himself into anything!”
A ghost of a smile formed on Heero’s face, and Duo became hopeful that their past could be fairly easily resolved. It didn’t have to be a long drawn out process. But only time could build trust.
“Heero?”
Heero finally met Duo’s gaze head on.
“Yes?”
“I’m going to go to the Titler’s in the morning, have them change your papers back to the position of a warrior slave, if that’s okay with you.” Duo paused, thinking over his next idea carefully. “I could use a personal body guard, one who would always be at my side.”
Heero smiled slightly, seeing the olive branch and wanting with all of his heart to never let it go. “I think that I would prefer that."
“Good, then I’ll take care of it tomorrow. I’ve asked the staff to bring us dinner here, and then tomorrow after the visit to the Titler’s, I’ll take you on a tour of the palace.”
“Thank you,” said Heero. Then, “Where am I to sleep tonight?” he asked, not wanting to assume anything.
Duo blinked, startled. Then blushed and rubbed his hand on the back of his neck, looking sheepish. “Well, I guess I assumed in the bed – it’s more than big enough for the both of us,” he said, staring at the topic of discussion. “Actually, it could probably fit most of the guardsmen in it.”
“I did notice it was rather large,” Heero replied quietly, not certain as to how his comment might be taken but wanting to extend his own hand of peace, and hopefully reciprocate what he thought was Duo’s take on their new relationship.
“Well, I fell out of bed a lot as a child. I always had all of these bruises, and, well, nobles,” He smiled conspiratorially at Heero. “They love to talk. Especially since sometimes the bruises were on my face! Anyways, Father decided he was really tired of it all and he figured if I had more room to roll and thrash around that I might actually be able to stay in the bed.” He paused then added, “He was right. I’ve only fallen out of bed three times since – and two of those were Treize’s fault.”
They shared a laugh, eyes meeting. And Heero and Duo both felt that maybe they could live with this.
Maybe.
