Kakarot awoke to a cold breeze hitting his bare skin. He stirred and opened his eyes, seeing snow ahead of them and…quite a distance to the ground from where they were, he sat up from where he was on the horse, but seemed to get colder. Shivering in the drifting snow and the chilly air, he snuggled back into the warmth behind him, only to freeze in his place when the warmth spoke. “You’re awake. I forgot to put a blanket on you the higher we went. I hope you’re not too cold.” Kakarot jumped forward, almost falling off the horse, and made an embarrassing sound that only a child would make when surprised. Vegeta chuckled. “Did I startle you? Or perhaps…did you forget where you were?”
Kakarot looked behind him to see the man smirking. “Both! How did we get so far? I didn’t sleep that long, did I?” He looked at their surroundings.
Vegeta’s smirk disappeared. “You were out for most of the day. Honestly Kakarot, sleeping so much isn’t good for you.” Kakarot gave Him a sheepish grin and a shrug before He continued. “We actually haven’t reached the peak yet, but I am hoping we pass it by the end of the day. I don’t think you can survive in these conditions over night.” He woa’d the horse to a stop and reached behind him to pull a blanket from His pack. “Here. This should be warm enough until we pass the bad weather.” He wrapped the blanket around the small form in front of Him and smiled softly when the boy accepted it and wrapped the cloth tighter around himself and leaned back into Him. “Not to worry. The weather is the worst part of the mountains. The best part is the view.” He kicked His heal into the horse’s side to get it moving again.
Kakarot couldn’t help but notice that Vegeta didn’t have anything keeping Him warm, just the shirt on His back. “Aren’t You going to put anything on? You must be cold too.”
Vegeta smirked slightly and shook His head once. “No. I’m used to these conditions and I can survive a lot longer in them than the average human.”
Kakarot also couldn’t help but notice how warm the man was through the blanket he had on him. “How odd. You’re still warm. It must be below zero up here and yet You aren’t even shivering.”
The smirk faded. “Like I said, I was built for these conditions, so I can handle it.” The smirk returned as He looked down at the shivering boy in front of Him. “I could even be enough to keep you warm.”
Despite the cold, a heated blush appeared on Kakarot’s face and he turned away from the smirking man, but didn’t want to move from his spot. “I hate to ask but…when can we stop? I can no longer feel my limbs, and I don’t know about You, but I’m starving.”
Vegeta thought for a moment. “I suppose we can stop for a moment. I keep forgetting about your needs. Five minutes and that’s all. Understand?” He looked to the younger for a sign that he understood. Kakarot shivered and nodded.
Once stopped on a decent ledge, Kakarot numbly ate what little food he brought with him and kept shivering. He kept looking to Vegeta, straining to see a sign that the man was cold, but the guy sat there like it was another nice day. Vegeta looked at the boy’s shivering form. “Are you still cold?” He asked more in disbelief than the obviousness of the sight in front of Him.
Kakarot could only nod shakily as Vegeta stood and walked towards His belongings on the saddle and searched for warmer clothing. However, His search was in vain when all He found was a long sleeve shirt. He looked back towards His fated one and felt at a loss. Why must He keep underestimating the humans’ weakness? He had to be more careful if He was going to keep him alive. The last thing He wanted was another repeat of the past where He couldn’t take care of another chosen. He stared helplessly at the boy for a moment then turned His concerned gaze to the horizon. The day was almost over and they haven’t reached the peak yet. Kakarot was already worse for wear and He was hoping they’d be out of the mountains by the end of the day tomorrow. Finally making a decision, He decided to make camp where they were and bring Kakarot’s shivering down to a minimum and put more color into his face. He’d rather miss His chance at war than losing another one He cared for.
He returned to the boy and displayed the shirt. “Kakarot, I’m sorry. All I have is this.” Kakarot stared hopelessly at the shirt and continued to shiver. Vegeta dropped the garment and returned to His things to pull out a tent. “We’ll go ahead and set up camp. The day is at an end and we need to get you out of the wind.” He explained as He started setting things up.
Kakarot looked up from his place on the ground to stare at the man in shock. “B-But, w-what ab-bout the w-war?” He stuttered in his shivering state.
Vegeta paused for a moment before turning to the boy. “I rather miss that than lose you. Give me a minute and I’ll have everything set up.”
Kakarot only nodded and watched the man work. He was surprised to see how big the tent was. They could easily stand up in it if they wanted and there appeared to be a fire pit in it as a soft glow showed through the brown colored fabric. Vegeta returned outside and guided the horse behind the tent and out of the wind, then came over to Kakarot and carried him inside. Kakarot sighed in relief at the warmth the fire brought inside the tent as he was set down beside it. He immediately scooted closer to it and brought his hands up in front of it. He still shivered where he sat, but continued to slowly thaw while he watched Vegeta, who seemed to be contemplating on what to do with Himself. “Do you need anything else?” He asked in a desperate tone with a worried expression.
Kakarot shakily shook his head. “I th-think th-this will b-be all I n-need f-for now.” Vegeta nodded and hesitantly seated Himself across the fire and in front of Kakarot. “H-However, Y-You can answer me th-this one qu-question.”
“Anything.” Vegeta answered quickly.
Kakarot attempted a smile and almost took advantage of the offer, but decided to wait on that one. “Wh-Why d-don’t Y-You g-get c-cold? A-And answer me t-truthfully. I-I want th-the whole answer.”
Vegeta looked defeated for a moment before coming up with His best answer. “I…was made for conditions like this. In fact, I’m used to living in these conditions because of what…what I am.” He was going to say something else, but changed it last minute. He looked at Kakarot to see if he was satisfied with that answer, but appeared to be waiting for more. Vegeta sighed and made Himself a bit more comfortable. “Remember how I made the fire in your house?” Kakarot nodded a bit uncomfortably. “Well, that should explain why I don’t get cold. My whole body is made up of fire…and other such elements that make me what I am.”
Kakarot took in the information. “A-And th-that is?”
Vegeta smirked lightly. “You’ll find out in time.”
Kakarot pouted at the answer, but left it at that as he continued to try and thaw himself. Not long after, Kakarot was having trouble staying awake, even though he slept throughout most of the day. Vegeta noticed this and also realized that the boy was still shivering. He looked through the slip of the entrance of the tent and noticed that the wind was blowing fiercely and the fire between them flickered, threatening to go out. He got up and left to check on the horse to make a decent shelter for it against the wind, then came back to handle with Kakarot.
He kneeled down beside the boy and gently took a hold of his chin to make him look His way. “Kakarot, I need you to stay awake for me. Can you do that?” Kakarot looked at Him with tired eyes and didn’t respond, probably too cold to answer. “I know it might be tempting to fall asleep and that it’ll be the best way to deal with the cold, but please know that if you do fall asleep, you might not wake up.” Kakarot’s eyes widened a fraction at that and nodded as his teeth chattered. Vegeta forced a smile and stood. “Now, I need you to wait a few moments so I may find a way to warm you up better.” He looked around the tent and His belongings to find that way. “I’m so sorry this is happening to you Kakarot. If only I paid more attention to you than our destination, then this wouldn’t have happened.”
He pulled some things out of His pack and found a futon at the bottom. He almost smacked himself in the head when He realized He packed it. Quickly spreading it out on the non-too-gentle floor of the tent, He went back to His things to see if there was another blanket. Meanwhile, Kakarot’s eyes threatened to shut. Fearing Vegeta’s words from before, he moaned out his fear, which caused Vegeta to look his way. Vegeta realized the dilemma and rushed over to him. “Alright, Kakarot! I’ll get you warm, just stay awake for me!” He said in a panic as He wrapped the blanket around the boy tighter then hastily picked him up and brought him over to the futon. It might not make him warmer, but it’ll be more comforting. Besides, He had a better idea in how to bring him warmth anyway. Although, it was more like a last resort, but He was desperate right now.
He laid the shivering youth down on the futon then laid beside him. He wrapped an arm around Kakarot and brought him closer. Kakarot didn’t hesitate in snuggling in His side as he kept shivering. Vegeta heightened His energy a bit in order to bring more warmth to His fated one, which caused him to snuggle more into him. In response, Vegeta wrapped both arms around him and decided to apologize again for the situation. “Kakarot, I’m sorry I have to do this. It’s actually one of the things that I have learned over the years that body heat can bring up one’s temperature and since I was obviously unprepared for this, this is the only other option that I know of.” He explained in a sorrowful note as Kakarot tried to moan out a forgiving phrase. He’ll have to do it when he’s warmer.
What seemed like hours to Vegeta, but was only about thirty minutes or so later, Kakarot’s shivers seemed to still more then stilled altogether. Over that period of time, Kakarot managed to put himself completely on top of the other and the blanket was on top of him. Vegeta was still hanging on to him for dear life and rubbed his back comfortingly in attempts to warm him. Even though Kakarot’s conditioned seemed better, the silence coming from him wasn’t all that comforting. “Kakarot? Are you…alright?” He almost asked if he was still alive, but if he was, He didn’t want to make it sound like He failed.
Kakarot moved slightly as Vegeta sighed in relief seeing that there were signs of life still in him. “Yes.” Kakarot answered tiredly.
Vegeta smiled in relief. “Good. I was…having doubts for a while there. I’m so sorry I put you through this. I should have bought something warmer while we were in the last village.”
Kakarot gently shook his head, rubbing it into the other’s chest. “Don’t blame it all on yourself. I should have brought something warmer.” Vegeta couldn’t help but sink a hand into those untamed locks in response to Kakarot’s words. “Is…it alright that I sleep now?” Kakarot asked in uncertainty.
Vegeta thought for a moment. “I don’t know. Are you warm enough?” He felt Kakarot nod. “Then I guess it’s fine. Get all the sleep you can and we’ll get a move on when you wake.”
“Okay.” Kakarot mumbled before finally closing his eyes. Not long after did Vegeta hear light snoring coming from him.
