We're an odd group, to be sure. Had it not been for the war, I doubt any of us would be friends. Heero is too independent and focused, but passionate. It's true. Who else would self-detonate but one who gave his all for a cause?... Or maybe the mission was too deeply ingrained in him. But both add up to the same thing.
I think Duo was the deadliest of us all. His skills were born on the streets. He'd grown up with kill or die. He was an enigma. Cheerful and boisterous, dark and mysterious. High-strung, but could sit for hours with a murder mystery in hand. Childlike but wise... Beautiful in every way.
Trowa... he's difficult to figure out. At least, he was during the war. Silent. Strong. A poker face no one could decipher. He grew up as a mercenary which would probably screw anyone up. He was, and is, our calm, detached voice of reason. His insights are based solely on knowledge, not emotion. Not that he doesn't feel emotion, he just doesn't act on it as readily as others do.
Quatre... well, he's the heart. He was the compassion the rest of us lacked. He was our innocence. And I think it hurt all of us to watch that be chipped away by the horrors of war.
Yeah, if we'd met under different circumstances, I doubt we'd be the friends we are today. So, in a way, I'm grateful for the outcome of the war. It's a bittersweet thing, I guess.
But, here we are, almost ten years later and life was good. Now it's falling apart and I have no clue how to put it back together again. And I need to... Gods how I need to.

Wufei leaned into the spare room Duo had used the night before. “I'm going home.”
The braided man didn't even bother to look up from his book. “Fine.”
“When are you coming?”
“Don't know.”
He took a breath. “Duo-”
“I don't want to talk to you right now.”
He stared at the top of Duo's head, wishing he would give him a chance to explain. He licked his lips. “I love you, Duo,” he whispered.
Violet eyes raised slowly as he sighed. “I know. That's the only reason I haven't kicked you out.”
Wufei kept careful control over his expression to not let the hurt show. “Yeah.” He turned and left, heart heavy in his chest. He stopped at the foot of the steps as Veronica stood in front of him.
"Wufei?”
“What?”
She put a hand on his arm. “What happened, Wufei?”
He dropped his chin to his chest and leaned his hip to the banister, rubbing his eyes. “Something stupid,” he mumbled.
She listened, eyebrows rising and eyes widened as he recited one of the worst scenarios a couple could get into. As he reached the end she gaped. “Wait a minute. That means-”
He shook his head. “It doesn't matter. By that point there was too much damage done.”
She pressed her lips to a thin line. “He's just as much to blame in this as you are. Why haven't you told him?”
“What would it matter? It's over, Ronnie. I think we're both just too stubborn to admit it.”
“Don't think like that, Wufei. You just have to work through it, and you're not doing that. You're both just waiting it out for something to change, and nothing will as long as you're not talking.”
He threw his hands in the air. “He won't talk to me. What am I supposed to do? Tie him to a chair until he'll listen?”
She smirked. “The idea holds merit.”
He rolled his eyes. “Stop thinking about perverted tactics. This is serious.”
She nodded. “You're right, it is. And if you don't fix it soon, then your prediction about y'all being over will come true.”
He grit his teeth. “How am I supposed to fix it?”
She thought for a moment. “Give me some time to come up with a plan. I'll help you however I can.” She pulled him into a quick hug. “And, hon, I know you think you're the worst of the two, but if everything you've told me is true, Duo's the real fuck-up here.” Wufei shook his head but she pressed on before he could protest. “Yes, he is. Now, I can't just tell him that, so I'm gonna have to show him.”
Wufei became a little frightened by the look in her eyes. “How?”
She grinned. “Wouldn't you like to know? Duo isn't one to just listen when someone tells him he did wrong, he's got to figure it out for himself.” She raised her chin. “I know because we operate the same way in some areas.”
He snorted. “Some?”
“Okay, most, but the fact of the matter is, I know what it would take for me to see reason on this, so, I think I know of a way to make him come to his senses.”
He released a breath. “You know something? I don't think I want to know. I'm going home.”
“All right.” She gave him a parting hug. “Everything will work out, Fei. I promise.”

Duo leaned into the kitchen where Quatre was going over the menu the cook had planned for the evening. “Quatre?”
The blond looked up and smiled. “What's up?”
He moved further into the room and sat at the table across from Quatre. The idea had sounded good, but now that he was there to present it, he felt a little guilty. 'I might run and hide, but I'll never tell a lie.' He grunted at his mantra. Yeah, that was him in a nutshell, and he was hiding for all he was worth.
“I need a huge favor.”
“Name it.”
He smiled. Quatre's generosity never ceased to amaze him. What if he'd asked for the moon? Would he have been presented with the lease? Inward chuckle, one day he'd have to try that. “Can I stay here a few days?”
Blond brows drew together. “Duo, nothing will ever be solved if you don't work things out with him.”
“I know, I just need some time, Quatre. I need to sort things out, ya know?”
He studied the American. “Are you sorting anything out, or are you hiding in books and whatever else you can find to avoid thinking about it?”
Duo grimaced. The blond knew him too well. “Look, I don't have the... I can't think about it right now. I need to get over being pissed before I can move to considering what happened and what to do.”
“The longer you wait the harder it's going to be.”
He closed his eyes. “Please, Quatre. If he sleeps on the damn couch one more night he's gonna be so far out of alignment it'll take a miracle to straighten his back out, and I just don't have the strength to let him back in the bedroom.”
Quatre quirked an eyebrow. “You want to stay here so he'll sleep in the bed and keep from hurting his back?”
Duo stiffened. “I didn't say that.” He pursed his lips at the look Quatre gave him. “All right, I'm worried about him. I'm pissed at him. But I don't want him to suffer. Can I stay?”
Quatre nodded slowly. “Yes, but only if you promise to actually work on things between the two of you.”
“I will.”
A nurse stepped into the room. “Mr. Winner, Mr. Yuy is asking for you.”
Quatre jumped up immediately and ran for the stairs. Duo followed at a more sedate pace, but his amusement melted at the door as he saw all the medical equipment. Heero appeared just fine, sitting in the recliner next to his bed and giving the blond an amused look. Cobalt eyes shifted to Duo.
“You're still here.”
“Good call, Captain Obvious,” he joked with a grin. “I'm gonna stay a few days.”
Heero nodded. “It just wanted Quatre to join me in watching a show. You can, too, if you want.”
“What show?”
“Queer as Folk.”
Duo grinned and moved into the room. “I'd love to. It's one of our...” He stumbled over the word as he recalled the hours he and Wufei had spent drooling over Brian and Justin's up and down relationship. “One of my favorites.”
Neither Quatre nor Heero missed the hitch in Duo's voice, but neither commented on it. Duo obviously needed some time to sort out his problems with his lover. For the next few hours, they watched halfway through the first disc of the first season before Duo called it a night. After one more episode, Quatre glanced to the clock.
“It's almost midnight.”
Heero nodded slowly. “Yeah, I guess we need to get to bed.”
The blond smiled softly, a twinge of sadness mixed in that he had a hard time hiding. “Are you going to be able to sleep in here?”
Heero took a breath and looked at the bed. He forced a smile. “Yeah.”
Quatre touched his knee in a feathery swipe. “If you need anything, just call for me.”
“I will.”

Trowa about fell off the bed as, at almost fifteen minutes to six, Veronica leapt from the bed and made a mad dash for the bathroom. He followed quickly, grimacing as she emptied her stomach. He handed her a wet wash cloth and a paper cup of water.
“You okay?”
She raised a shoulder and leaned her back to the tub. “Probably something I ate.”
He grunted. “I hope not.”
She glared at him. “And why not!?”
He smirked. “Because I ate everything you did, and I hate throwing up.”
She rolled her eyes. “Has anyone ever told you that you're an asshole.”
He nodded solemnly, amusement dancing in his eyes. “You, on a regular basis.”
She snorted. “All right, asshole, go fix me coffee.”
He chuckled. “Yes, ma'am. Would you like eggs with that?”
Her stomach turned again and she paled before leaning back over the toilet. “Hell no.”
