Rashid watched from the corner of the hangar as a quarter after one, the jet pulled in and came to a rolling stop. He stepped forward, rolling the stairs to the door when it opened. He nodded to Heero and Trowa as they came out first, followed by Duo. And then Quatre and Wufei. Rashid's eyes widened as he took in the sight of the Chinese man.
He looked at once the same and totally different. His face had an ethereal beauty to it the Maguanac didn't remember, but at the same time he was hardened and... lost. He looked down at the young man as he stopped before him.
“Master Wufei, may I speak with you?”
“Rashid-”
“It's all right, Quatre.” He gave the blond a small, tight smile and stepped to the side with the large man.
“It hurt him greatly when you disappeared.”
Wufei waited for more, but when it was obvious Rashid wasn't going to say more, he nodded. “It hurt me, too, Rashid, more than you know. There wasn't a day I didn't think about him,” he admitted quietly as he held the other man's eyes. “But it was too dangerous for me to return. I didn't want to put him at risk.”
Rashid raised an eyebrow. “And now?”
“Some things have changed. I wish I could elaborate, but I can't. I promise I will protect him to the death.”
The Maguanac nodded slowly. “Glad to see you again, Master Wufei.”
He tipped his head. “You as well, Rashid.”
The burly man made his goodbyes and left. Wufei followed the others into the house, shaking his head. “I can't see how you convinced them to board up the windows.”
Quatre threw him a smile. “They're paid well, Wufei, unless it's illegal, they don't ask questions.”
“I see.”
Quatre looked to the couple in front of them. “Trowa, I'm famished and I sent the cook home.”
Trowa smirked and changed direction for the kitchen. “Well, that was subtle.”
“You wouldn't want me to burn my house down, would you?”
“Anything but that,” Duo chortled, throwing an arm over the small blond's shoulder. “I'd hate to see you lose another house thanks to your endeavors in the kitchen.”
Wufei sat at the table with Quatre and Heero while Duo helped Trowa. Heero tapped his fingers on the table top. “We need to make plans. Do you know how to find these four?”
He sighed. “Supposedly.”
Duo glanced to him. “What does that mean?”
“The answer, I was informed, is in the visions, but, like I said earlier, none of them make sense. They're just a blur of images.” He leaned his elbows on the table. “No one, not even those working for them, know who or where the ancients are.”
“Then how do they command their underlings?”
“I don't know how they originally met with their generals, but now they send messages to get things done. It's all coded and sent through the post office.”
“It should be traceable then.”
He shook his head. “No return address, sent from random towns and cities.” He looked up. “I was told I could find them through the visions, but I haven't been able to unlock them.”
Heero stared at him as he thought. “Do you know how to unlock them?” Wufei pursed his lips and Heero's eyes narrowed. “How do you unlock them?”
“I know of one way, but I'm trying to find another.”
He folded his arms across his chest. “What is the way you do know?”
“A mate,” he answered reluctantly.
Quatre's brows drew together. “A mate?”
Wufei dropped his eyes to the floor. “Humans who give themselves to male vampires. They can use a measure of power from the vampire. For many, it's a very impersonal arrangement. Humans wanting power and vampires wanting people they can use during the day.”
Quatre tilted his head to the side. “Are they like slaves?”
“No, they're willing. It would be dangerous to mate with someone who isn't. They could easily turn on you.”
Heero cleared his throat. “Is there someone specific you're supposed to mate with, or can it be anyone?”
He took a breath. “Someone specific.”
“Do you know who?” Quatre asked.
Wufei didn't answer, pressing his lips to a fine line. Duo turned and slid plate across the table, along with a large bowl of salad. He put his hands on his hips. “Cheer up, Fei. Having a lover isn't a bad thing.”
He looked up to the braided man. “It isn't that simple, Duo.”
Quatre reached across the table and gripped Wufei's hand, not liking what he was hearing but wanting to offer some measure of comfort. “He's right, Wufei. Love is never a bad thing.”
Onyx eyes met soft blue. “And if our choices are taken away from us? How would you react if you were a pawn of fate?”
He bit his lip. “Hope for the best. If it takes you mating with someone in order to keep us poor humans from being feeding stock, then that's what you should do. Maybe you can learn to love them.”
Wufei gazed at him silently. "If there is love between a mated pair, they share thoughts, sometimes emotions. The link is absolute either way. If the vampire dies, the mate follows not long after.” He pushed from the table. “Why would I want to do that to someone?”
Quatre watched him leave and sighed, rubbing his face. “Are you still open to his emotions?”
He looked to Heero a bit guiltily. “Yes. I know I should have let go once we found him, but-”
Heero shook his head. “What's he feeling right now?”
“Hopeless, fear, lost.” Blond brows drew together, his eyes becoming unfocused. “He knows what he needs to do, but he's loathe to do it.”
“And what is that?”
“To take the mate he's chosen.”
“Chosen?”
Quatre shook his head, frowning. “What?”
“Who has he chosen as his mate?”
He blinked. “He chose someone already?”
Duo raised an eyebrow. “That's what you just said.”
“No I didn't. I said he felt hopeless, fear and lost.”
The other three fell silent, exchanging glances. Quatre knew he was missing something, but he didn't think he wanted to know at the moment. He was too hungry. He dished out some salad and glanced to Trowa who had turned back to the refrigerator.
“Trowa, can you make me a steak?”
He nodded and a few minutes later Quatre was devouring a twelve ounce, medium rare sirloin with a zeal that amazed even Duo. The braided man scratched the back of his head.
“Wow, Quatre, you hungry there?”
He flushed as he took the last bite. “Uh... not anymore.” He wiped his mouth and looked up to Trowa. “It was really good.”
“Thank you.” He sat down with a plate of fruit and vegetables for Heero and a smaller steak and vegetables for himself.
“No meat?” he asked Heero.
“I don't digest heavy meat very well. The best I can handle is poultry.”
Duo leaned his elbows on the table as he twirled his fork in the left over spaghetti. “Does it have something to do with what you are?”
He nodded and began to eat. Quatre propped his chin in his palm. “Why are you hiding what you are?”
“Several reasons,” he answered shortly.
Trowa covered his mouth, but not before Quatre and Duo caught the small smile curving his lips.
******
An hour before dawn, Duo gathered up his keys and headed for the door. “Going out?”
He glanced to Wufei. “Yeah. I need to get some stuff from my apartment. And I gotta figure out what I'm gonna tell Une.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “This thing is bigger than anything Preventers has going on right now. We could use some help, but I think if I go in there and say vampires are trying to take over the world I'll get locked up in a loony bin.”
Wufei nodded. “If you want out, Duo, now is the time to do it.”
He snorted with a smirk. “Sit back and let y'all have all the fun? Don't think so, buddy.” He tilted his his back as he thought. “I guess I can request extended leave... or quit.”
“Quit?”
He shrugged. “It's just a job. This is family.”
“Be careful. The vampiric activity here isn't as much as Vegas, but it's still present.”
He waved over his shoulder and moved out into the early morning darkness. He dialed his cell as he started his car.
“Why didn't you tell me you were leaving? Where did you go?”
He pursed his lips. “It was a split second decision, I didn't have time. We went to Vegas.”
“Did you find Wufei?”
He sighed. “Yeah. Look, we need to talk.”
The voice on the other end was quiet for a long moment. “This doesn't sound good.”
“I'm leaving Preventers.”
“Why?”
“I can't really explain. Something's come up and I can't ignore it.”
“And us?”
He bit his lip. “I'm sorry.”
“I don't accept that. Where are you now?”
“Heading to my apartment.”
“I'll see you there.”
“No, wait-” The line went dead and he clenched his phone in his fist. “Great.”
A few minutes later he parked in a spot next to the familiar Mercedes and took the stairs up to his apartment. He didn't really want to break things off, but it would be better in the long run. It was bound to happen sooner or later anyway. Secret office romances rarely worked out. He pushed into his apartment and leaned his back to the door, gazing at the figure several feet in front of him. He felt his resolve weaken.
“I'm not leaving because I want to leave you. This is important.”
Pale blue eyes narrowed. “Then shouldn't Une be informed?”
He raked his hands through his bangs. “Zechs, it's not that easy.”
He crossed to the brunette and gripped his shoulders, somewhat disgruntled by the growth spurt a few years back that had put Duo on eye level with him. “We had something good going, I'm not going to let you walk out without giving me a reason.”
“You'll think I'm crazy.”
Zechs smirked. “I already think that.” The smirk faded. “We agreed from the beginning that we wouldn't keep secrets from each other.”
Duo gazed into the clear blue eyes. Theirs had been a strange relationship, neither really knowing how to trust the other in their first couple of years working for the same organization. But several assignments together had begun shifting their perspectives, and the grudging respect had slowly turned to friendship and then to something a little more.
He sighed and pulled from Zechs' grasp to pace the living room. “We found Wufei in Vegas. There are people trying to kill him.”
“So we put him in protective custody.”
“These people would eat us alive.” He snorted. “Literally.”
“Excuse me?”
He took a breath and faced the blond. “They're vampires.”
Zechs raised an eyebrow. “Vampires.”
“See, I said you wouldn't believe me.”
He put a hand to Duo's forehead. “Are you sure you're feeling well?”
He knocked the hand away and gripped Zechs' shoulders. “I watched him suck blood! Trowa turns into a panther and I don't know what the hell Heero is, but he ain't human either. I'm telling the truth, Zechs. You know I don't lie.”
He nodded slowly. “I'm sure you believe what you're telling me, but, Duo, there’s no such thing as vampires.”
“Is that so?” a silken voice asked from the door.
They spun and stared at the newcomer who'd managed to enter the apartment through a locked door without either of them noticing. Zechs pulled his gun while Duo pulled out a crossbow. The man tsked, pale green eyes sparkling slightly. Zechs eyes widened as he took in the man's appearance. His skin was a faint green color, and the pupils of his eyes slits rather than circles. His long fingers ended with claws as opposed to nails.
“I'm not here to fight. I'm here to deliver a message.”
“Deliver it and get out,” Duo growled.
“Humans, so hasty,” he said almost sadly. “All right then. It is important all of you understand that Chang Wufei and his pet are not the only Seer and Key. There are others gifted with foresight. None as strong as Chang, but they are not fighting against it. If he doesn't hurry, the Custos will fall into the hands of the enemy.”
Duo frowned. “What's the Custos?”
The man smirked, tipping his head. “That is for Chang and his pet to discover, and they must discover it soon. Chang can defeat three of them, but he cannot hope to win against Merrick without the Custos.”
Duo tilted his head to the side. “Who are you?”
“Merely a messenger.” He bowed and disappeared through the closed door.
Duo let his arm drop and rubbed his forehead.
“For what it’s worth,” Zechs murmured, “I believe you.”
He grunted. “So now you understand why I have to leave.”
Zechs shook his head. “Not without me.”
He looked to the blond. “I can't ask you to do that.”
“You don't have to, it's my decision.”
Duo moved into the bedroom and began throwing clothes in a suitcase. “Zechs, the last few months have been nice. I've enjoyed our time together, but it's hardly set in stone. Very new. We can move on and-”
He cut off as arms wrapped around him from behind. “You'll so easily give up on the chance to find happiness?”
Duo swallowed but kept his tone light. “What? Disappointed you never got in my pants?”
“There is that,” he joked quietly. “But the truth is I don't like the idea of a Preventers office without you. You keep things lively.”
“So you want to keep me around for entertainment purposes?”
Zechs tightened his hold. “I just want to keep you around.”
Duo dropped the shirt he was folding into the bag. “I don't see how we're gonna live through this,” he whispered.
“All of us have faced odds like that before.”
“Zechs... This scares me. The others don't seem to care. Even Quatre doesn't seem fazed by it. I think he's more concerned with getting Fei to feed off of him than he is about the fact that a war's about to erupt.”
Zechs frowned. “Wufei is... sucking Quatre's blood?”
“Yeah, and Quatre practically begs for it. Apparently if feels good.” He shivered. “It's freaky if you ask me.”
“Sounds to me like you need an ally among your allies.”
Duo turned and draped his arms over Zechs' shoulders, twining his fingers through a lock of the long blond hair. He licked his lips and gazed into Zechs' pale eyes. “How are we gonna explain this to Une?”
He shrugged. “I say we quit.”
“I think I'm rubbing off on you.”
Zechs smirked and pulled Duo's hips to his own, pulling a surprised yelp from the younger man. “No, now you're rubbing off on me.”
He groaned. “Okay, we really don't have time for this. I need to pack and get back to Quatre's.”
Zechs nodded and pulled away. “Let them know I'm coming.”
“I will.” He pulled the blond in for a kiss. “What about Une?”
“I'll handle that before I come over.” He trailed his knuckles down Duo's cheek. “You need some sleep.”
Duo nodded. “Give me a call before you come to Quatre's.” Zechs nodded that he would and Duo returned to the house, collapsing on the bed in the guest room he usually used when visiting the blond. He lay for a long time, mind running through the events of the last few days. It was all so impossible but at the same time real. When he finally did fall into a restless sleep, it was to dreams of dark alleys and fangs.
