Lyri walked back into Vegeta’s quarters covered in blood. She had been pulled off the poor sap and was almost sent to the dungeon. She was let go because she was the prince’s intended. She pulled her blood soaked gloves off and made her way to the bathroom. She was turning the water on to the shower when she sensed Vegeta behind her. She ignored him and continued getting the shower ready.
“Why do you reek of blood?” he asked. She said nothing and pulled her armor off. “Answer me, damnit!” Vegeta yelled.
Lyri took off her boots. “I kicked someone’s ass. It’s not that big of a deal...”
“It is! You are acting as my intended! You need to act as if you really are! Hold yourself to a higher standard!” he yelled at her.
She pulled her shirt off. “Fine. From now on I will hold myself to a higher standard.”
Vegeta’s eyes wandered down her bare back. Her tail twitched.
“Anything else?” she asked.
Vegeta stared for a moment longer before he left. Lyri slipped out of her pants and panties and got in the shower. She washed the blood off her but the smell still lingered. As she scrubbed herself, Vegeta’s words echoed in her mind.
‘Hold myself to a higher standard...’ she thought, ‘Like he wouldn’t have done the same thing or worse...’
She sighed. Vegeta was right though. She couldn’t just kick anyone’s ass anymore. Not like tonight anyway. Lyri rinsed the remaining soap off of her and turned the shower off. After wrapping a towel around herself, she walked through the bedroom and into the closet. Vegeta wasn’t in the bedroom. She could sense him in the living space. She was thankful that he wasn’t in the bedroom. She didn’t want another lecture. Especially while she was in a towel. She pulled on a pair of gray pants and a matching shirt. Lyri stepped out of the closet and sat on the edge of the bed. With a small sigh, she fell backwards on the bed. She might have just signed her own death warrant with that stunt. The king would hear about and it would give him more ammunition to send her away.
“Fuck...” she muttered.
She heard Vegeta shuffle around in the next room. A thought passed through her mind. It was a long shot, but...
Lyri got up and walked into the next room. Vegeta glanced at her as he went over paperwork at his desk.
“What?” he asked.
“I was wondering if you can promise me something,” she told him.
“Why would I promise you something?” he asked.
“Because I’m helping you fool your father,” she told him.
“So?” he asked.
She thought for a minute about how she wanted to ask him. “So, I need assurance,” she finally said. Vegeta looked at her. Lyri looked down as she spoke, “I know it’s a lot to ask, but...if you could make sure I don’t get orders to Frieza’s ship...”
He continued staring at her. Was she serious? The look on her face told him that she was.
“I can’t guarantee that,” he told her, turning back to his papers.
“But-“ she started before being cut off.
“I cannot!” Vegeta snapped.
“Fine!” Lyri snapped back.
Vegeta watched as she angrily walked back to the bedroom. He shook his head and returned to his work. When he was done he walked into the bedroom, undressed and climbed into bed. He pulled Lyri close. Though she didn’t say anything to him, her could tell she was still upset. It bothered him more than he cared to admit, he didn't like that she was upset. He also didn't want her still upset when he tok her to meet his father. Though he couldn’t outright promise her...
“I’ll see what I can do,” he told her.
She shifted in his arms and her amethyst eyes looked at him. “Thank you...”
“Hmmn,” he muttered, “Go to sleep.”
Lyri settled into his arms and fell asleep shortly after. She felt like she had barely gotten any sleep when she was woken up. She groaned and sat up in bed.
“Get up,” Vegeta told her on his way to the closet, a towel wrapped around his waist.
Lyri got up and walked into the closet.
“What the hell?” Vegeta snapped.
Lyri grabbed a pair of black pants and a halter-style armor. She walked back out into the room and took off her sleep clothes and pulled on her pants. The armor she had chosen didn’t need a shirt under it, which she was grateful for because she had forgotten her shirt. She was pulling her armor on when Vegeta emerged from the closet, wearing his normal blue suit and armor that cut off at the shoulder.
“Was that necessary?” he asked.
“Yes,” Lyri told him, “Unless you want me walking around in my sleep clothes. Or nude.”
“Next time, wait,” he snapped.
“Fine. Next time, don’t stare at me while I undress,” she retorted.
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Vegeta told her before walking out of the bedroom.
Lyri smirked to herself as she pulled on her boots. She quickly followed Vegeta to the living quarters and stopped short when she saw an array of food waiting for them.
“What?” Vegeta asked.
“Nothing. May I?” she asked.
“It’s for you too,” he told her, his mouth full.
Lyri sat and picked out some food. “I was wondering about something...” Vegeta glanced at her as he ate. “What will you tell people when they ask why you haven’t challenged my father? Bardock, I mean,” Lyri asked.
“You have no father. That’s what I will tell them,” he told her.
“I have a father! Bardock may not be my blood father, by he has raised me as if I were his own...” Lyri told him, “He’s better than my blood father...”
“I don’t need Bardock’s permission to take you as my intended! I don’t need anyone’s permission because you aren’t my real intended!” Vegeta snapped.
Lyri quickly stood and left, walking out of the palace and into the capital. ‘Fucking dick,’ she thought to herself as she walked, ‘I was just asking because that’s what people will want to know. No need to throw in my face that this is just an act.’ She quickly reached the outskirts of the capital and kept walking towards her home village. Upon entering the village, she made note that Gine and Bardock’s kis weren’t at home, so she kept walking.
“Lyri, right?” someone asked as they walked up and started walking with her.
“Yeah,” she said looking at the person. His long ebony hair fell just past his shoulders and was pulled back in a low ponytail. His equally dark eyes weren’t as intense as Vegeta’s yet they weren’t as kind as Kakarot’s. He seemed familiar, but she couldn’t quite place where she might have met him before.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked.
“I’m sorry. I don’t,” she told him.
“I’m not surprised. You were away protecting the princess when Kakarot and I were teamed up together for missions,” he told her.
“Oh yeah! You're one of his teammates!” she exclaimed.
“Yeah. Name’s Nix,” he said.
Lyri nodded. She vaguely remembered seeing him and Kakarot together when she was home but she never had the chance to get to know him because of her duties.
“Got something on your mind?” Nix asked.
“No,” she lied, “Just out for a walk.”
“Liar,” he said.
“Hey!” Lyri said. Who the hell did this Saiyan think he was? She didn’t know him. And even if she did, she couldn’t tell him about her problems.
Nix smirked at her. “So you do do have something on your mind.”
“Even if I did, why would I talk to you about it? I don’t even know you,” Lyri told him.
Nix shrugged. “I’ve been told I’m a good listener.”
“You probably just pretend to listen to people’s problems,” she said.
Nix shrugged. “Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t.”
“Yeah, well, I don’t want to talk about it,” she said.
“Ok. But last chance to get friendly unbiased advice,” he told her.
“What?” Lyri asked.
“I was only out here to say goodbye to some comrades. I leave for Frieza’s ship soon,” he said.
“I’m sorry,” Lyri said as they headed out of the village and into the desert.
Nix shrugged. “Nothing I can do about it. Either I go or I’m executed for not following orders.”
“Are you not afraid that you’ll be killed working for Frieza?” Lyri asked.
“I know that there’s a very good chance that I won’t come back, but I’d rather die a proud Saiyan than a coward who tried to run from his problems,” he told her.
Lyri thought for a minute. “Can I ask you a question?” He nodded. “I have a friend.”
“Friend,” he said using air quotes.
She glared at him.
“I won’t tell anyone what you’re going to say,” Nix said, “I’m being sent away soon, remember?”
“Fine. But if you say anything, I will kill you, understand?” Lyri threatened. He nodded. “So, I kinda agreed to do something for this guy. He doesn’t know I like him and if he does, doesn’t care or feel the same way. Except-“
“You’re finding it hard to do this because you love him?” Nix asked. She nodded. “Hmm...I guess either tough it out or call it off. Or tell him you have feelings for him. But... if you go about telling him your feelings, be prepared for him not to feel the same way. Prince Vegeta is kind of known for not having many feelings.”
“We just got back yesterday! Did fucking Kakarot tell the entire planet?!” Lyri asked angrily.
Nix shrugged. “Not the entire planet,” he said, “But he wasn’t really quiet when he told Raditz. The whole barracks heard him.”
“I’m going to kill him,” Lyri muttered.
Nix chuckled. “So why you? Not that I don’t think you’re not worthy of our prince, but did he tell you why?”
“His father won’t let him take the throne without a mate. To be honest, I wonder why he asked me as well, but he said not to read too much into his choosing me,” Lyri said, “To be even more honest, he deserves someone better than me.”
“Why do you say that?” Nix asked.
“Look at me. I’m the most unSaiyan Saiyan that ever lived. No one wants my stupid weird genes in their family. Hell, my own father tried to have me killed,” she said.
“Really?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Lyri told him. They were quiet and they stopped walking.
“So have you figured out what you’re going to do?” Nix asked.
“I’m not going to say anything,” Lyri said, “It’ll probably just make things harder.”
Nix nodded.
“I’m sorry you’re being sent to Frieza’s ship,” Lyri said again.
“Yeah, well, like I told you, not much I can do about it...” he said.
Lyri growled and kicked the sand under her boot. “I wish we weren’t stuck under that bastard’s thumb! Why? The king has to know what happens to those sent there!”
“He probably does but doesn’t care,” Nix agreed.
“That’s not how a king should act. He should care more for his people...” she said. The pair were quiet again and Lyri sighed. “I should head back to the capital. Stay safe.”
Nix nodded. “You too.”
And with that, they went they separate ways.
